Actually not, cognitive dissonance is the thinking of two contrary ideas and believing that they can both be true. In ethics this would manifest as moral relativism. The speaker of that phrase is just dissociating from the idea that there can be such a thing as a "dog burger" - he does not want to own up to finding the idea a horrific one (he might do later in some private space..)

Very interesting to hear you speak to Finnish people. We're stubborn and everyone I know thinks like these people about animals. But veganism has been growing fast over the past few years and even tho it's hard I try to believe in a better future.
Don't worry! Everyone in this world is stubborn but it will only be a matter of time.
It was such a struggle for me to listen to this because of the strong Finnish accent😂 But it's true that many of us are quite stubborn and stuck to our old ways. However the general interest for plant based foods is rising all the time and there's many restaurants that now offer a vegan option(like Rosso, Friends&BRGRS, Fafa's, Hanko Sushi) or are even completely vegan(such as Vegoshi and Bun2Bun), pulled oats are also a delicious Finnish product😋
So Finnish should give up their salmon and reindeer for quinoa or avocados which are cultivated across the world?
@@laurentfaurite8660 You think Finnish food=meat, dairy & eggs? You can find a lot of plant-based products(including quinoa) at the store that are grown here in Finland and you don't have to buy avocados if you prefer 100% domestically produced food. However, imported plant foods still tend to have smaller impact on environment, are healthier and more ethical than animal products from near you. Of course it's better to favor food grown locally but that doesn't necessarily mean meat. Instead oats, veggies, broad beans etc. are a great choice. (Also, it's not just vegans who buy avocados etc. from other side of the world)

I'm trying to imagine that skinny guy in a cage match with a puppy, a bunny, a lion, a shark (land shark), an elephant, a python, a crocodile, and a koala bear. I wonder which one he would kill with his claws and teeth and eat first. It could be any one since he is at the top of the food chain.

The human body itself is far from top of the food chain. It's our brain that makes the difference and allows us to do amazing things, including creating tools to kill animals we don't have to kill in order to survive. Not in these days at least.
We've done it for thousands of years, now it's time to evolve a bit more, we have the technology to do it

Sam Curtis we are talking of survival though. In a survival situation yes we could use our tools and kill anything to feed ourself and survive. But in everyday life most of the people can eat alternatives and avoid breeding animal just for the purpose of slaughtering them and eating them just cause they taste good. The most developed brain put us on top of the food chain and we should use it to show compassion and avoid killing beings if not necessary.
You have the most amount of patience I have seen in anyone, and that level of patience is what is so necessary for the truth to eventually surface in conversations like these. They may return to eating meat most definitely but the next time around that they are spoken to or see news about veganism, the seed you planted in them will begin to grow stronger I would hope!

I think the trick is to realise that there are no non-vegans just those that have forgotten themselves and that you know just how they came to.

They're finnish, judging by their accent. Veganism isn't very popular in Finland, maybe because historically meat has been important in north, where there doesn't grow many fruits and stuff

I know Ed doesn't like crazy hypotheticals, but whenever someone says it's justified to kill animals because we are at the top of the food chain, I always want to ask:. If aliens invaded, would they be justified in killing us since they are now the top of the food chain?

I really like this type of conversation: where nobody is rude, everyone can say what he thinks and, most of all, everybody's listening to what the other is saying.
Each one of us has a different opinion but I think the way somebody talks and faces an argument is what defines him/her.
I really appreciate you and the four guys. Even if they had a different point of view and incoherent ideas, they still were calm and kept on discussing. I hate when people starts feeling he/she is incoherent and immediately becomes rude.
I deeply admire your patience Ed. These conversations you have must be really tiring; I wouldn't be able to cope with so much stupidity. I think partially because even before I was vegan I already new instinctively that I was wrong and always lived with a heavy conscience about it, I would just try to block it. But I always felt self conscious and embraced when some vegan or vegetarian was present at at a dinner party. Back then, the only thing I wasn't yet fully aware of, was how bad things really are for the animals we exploit. "Earthlings" changed that for me. It also introduced me to much deeper change in my perception of non-human animals and how we relate to them. It was a brutal awakening for which I'll be forever thankful. I emptied my fridge and became vegan over night. Having said that, I believe your Socratic approach is probably the most productive one specially when it comes to approaching people on the street. Keep it up.

Your style of activism is sooo inspiring. Been watching your videos for a few months now and turned vegan after being a vegetarian for 5 years before.. really want to participate in this type of activism. Been watching all of your, James and joey's interviews and it's really helped me with how to speak to non-vegans. Im starting with people around me and I'll do my best to stay calm and collected. Just recently I spoke to my friend about veganism and almost just wanted to cry out and curse him out because he just couldn't understand the ethical part of veganism, but I stayed cool and used the same exact responses you would have used and it got us to a much better place and he is thinking of not eating meat for now... thank you, you and your work is so inspiring and really gives me hope that people will wake up soon, hope you read this and greetings from nyc

@Rob D just because you can murder an animal doesn’t mean you should. Even if your brain is more evolved then theirs. Food chain is for survival and if we were all stuck in the wild with no fruits, plants, seeds or legumes available to eat, then you can use the food chain argument.

I respect how diplomatic you can be in these discussions, Ed. 😊 I can understand how once you're aware, it can be difficult to reign in your feelings and emotions.. so I appreciate the fact that you're able to do so. *Remembering* (because too many omni's-turned-vegans "forget" and then act like militant jerks) that you used to eat animals, yourself, is a big help towards understanding a non-vegan's point of view..and like you've mentioned in your questioning, I personally had the epiphany that my palate *isn't* more important than an animal's life, and *that's* really where things take a turn. I think people who aren't vegan need to reach that perspective before they are able to commit to a vegan lifestyle. As long as they see themselves as being at the "top of the food chain", they're never going to change (plus society only reinforces that opinion, which makes it harder to change at all). They're going to *remain* "asleep" and continue to justify their actions. At least with "gentle" discussions like this, you can give them "food for thought". 😉 Good job.

Hi Ed, recently I got to meet a religious person and we got into a discussion about veganism. in this argue that person claimed that we are prior to other animals due to the bible, and because of god who gave them to us.
My question is that - how do I handle this argument and what would you say if you were in that situation?
Ask them to question their beliefs of "gods" first and the "bible" which is written by humans FYI which includes "If you're sexually attracted to your own sex then you are sinning, therefore, you will go to hell".
I wouldn't really bother arguing with a close minded person as it'd pretty much be a waste of time.
Think this as trying to tell them that their beliefs are wrong, that god doesn't exist, yeah, a religious close minded person will never change their mind.

Animals have feelings. What is wrong with people? I have a doggy and she is older and she gets nervous and things like that. I was watching her and my mom came in from a very long absence. She was SO happy! And when I would come home from work, she was also SO happy to see me! I'm sorry. She left my home and I miss her... I'm gushing. :-)

That would be too emotive, it would seem like an accusation. Some might be ripe for that but not necessary with these guys. You have to tailor your next question upon their last answer and go just that little bit more challenging.
He always asks that and I think it's problematic because it''s assuming that's the only reason people eat dead animals when are other reasons. Nutrition for example.
You could ask vegans the same. Also for our food animals do die. Just way less of course.
It is impossible to live without having a negative impact. But we can minimize it.

In reply to frugivorous claims, I will answer with: the definition of a herbivore or carnivore or omnivore is not about what that animal likes, it is defined by what that animal eats.
For example, pregnant women get weird craving but it does not suddenly alter their status as an omnivore.

For some reason there is this common thought in Finland that our slaughterhouses and farms are somehow superior to those in the rest of the world. Even though we still allow fur farming and the government doesn't really punish if you break our "superior" animal farming laws. I can't even count the number of times I've heard "well Finnish dairy farms are humane" and "that doesn't happen in Finland, only abroad" when trying to explain how horrible the meat/dairy industry is.
All people think this. People try and justify carnism by thinking “ But we kill them humanely here”. What I thought as well, don’t anymore of course.
@@pozxcety56 yeah it's the same everywhere. I live in Canada and we tend to have this argument too. It's easy to put the blame on the US or some Asian country. I think marketing as also a big part in this. In my region (Quebec) we are a big producer of pork. It's one of our "speciality". So we see a tons of marketing promoting pork saying it's great quality, that we care about them, it's local etc. So we tend to believe that our pork are somehow better than others places and that their quality of life etc is better.
Why meat and poultry are so good for you
Meat and poultry are very good sources of protein, which is important for growth and development. But did you know they are also full of other things that you need to be healthy? For example:
iodine to help your body produce thyroid hormone
iron to carry oxygen around your body
zinc to keep your immune system strong, your skin healthy, and for growth, development and reproductive health
vitamin B12 for your nervous system
omega 3 to support heart and brain health.

That s a golden example of planting a seed. If you would have started getting pushy they would have started going in circles but you just give them enough info for them to call themselves hypocrites... genius!
I wish somebody would go philosophical and ask "what is taste?" An onset of the release of neurotransmitters that pleasures a corresponding portion of the brain. Or something else. "What is piety?"
To answer the woman's point, that other animals don't have human feelings like self consciousness, that would take a long discussion to explore. Humans have self consciousness translated to them by our culture. It's not so clear that we would have self consciousness if that wasn't reinforced by social behavior. The other emotions are equally influenced and filtered a great deal by outside influence, learning from each other what should evoke a reaction.
So how is it that we understand from culture if we don't already have the potential for consciousness already within us? When culture impinges upon us what is it impinging on? Something has to be of a similar nature doesn't it? Just asking.

Hi Ed, I've been following your videos for a while now and consequently am working towards being vegan. At the moment I am veggie however I seem to be going through phases of being really cold and shivery. My mum said this is 'due to me not eating meat and not getting real iron and b12'. I just came out of a doctors appointment and my doctor told me that although it's a personal choice In her 25 years of being a GP she has came across a lot of veggies and vegans who have osteoporosis and other difficulties. I asked her why there are so many healthy vegans and she said that among them many are unhealthy as you can only get B12 from meat. I was going to challenge her and name a list of vegetables that you could get it from but it was a rushed appointment. I also take vitamin supplement but she stated that they a lot of the time aren't concentrated enough so basically aren't as good as a source as what meat is. I know a lot of the time the GPs that work for the NHS are reliable but there are many cases where they have undiagnosed diseases and make mistakes. She said that the NHS are now not giving patients medication to help them with iron levels if they are vegan or veggies because it is their personal choice not to eat meat (I didn't want medication I just wanted a blood test which I got in the end). There was the dawning of a realisation on the part of the young lady, especially when she used the word 'hypocrite'. I admire Earthling Ed's patience and good humour. I wonder how many times he's heard the usual old 'food chain', 'I like the taste of meat', 'we've evolved' etc etc!
It still mystifies me how apparently intelligent people are incapable of seeing what is obvious in what we do to animals. They aren't even curious about it.
