Oh man. We got another one people. Unfortunately, once you start listening to Tool, it makes most other music seem rather dull. Rosetta Stoned or Jambi.
What is the obsession with 10,000 days recommendations? I don't get it. Specifically Rosetta Stoned. I've been listening to Tool for 20 years and that is one of their worst songs IMO.
I have a problem .. seriously I own too many god damn pairs of cans and buds ..and it all started because I wanted good headphones to listen to tool with .
Their musicianship is unmatchable, but the mixing is not by them. They have a great team of engineers working with them. Mix these two groups together and you will have a truly great musical performance!!
Saw them live last year. A highlight of my life. This was on their setlist. Was absolutely astounding. Crazy how without the lasers and HD projections... Just them playing live, sounds dozens of times better than their digital tracks with $300 headphones. Even after 30 years of playing.
Jesse Herbert oh you'd be surprised at what my musical knowledge is lacking. I thought I was well educated in all things music but if this channel has taught me anything, it's that I'm not in as good a place as I thought! Ask me about pre 1990 metal, I'm your man, ask me about 90s British alternative, there's not much I don't know, electronica, reggae and dub, psychedelic rock, space rock, trip hop, Americana, ambient, etc I'm fine with. I don't get lumbered with a single genre, I love music of all kinds as long as it's real, it's emotional. Learning all the time!
they are an incredible band, just don't put them on such a high pedestal like the fanboys do- they're my favorite band but it's pretty cancerous to act the way uber fanboys do. Just enjoy the lyrics and don't think too deeply about the lyrics. Maynard and the rest of the band are geniuses, but at their core they are regular people just like you and I.
Jesse Herbert you've got the look of a man who's discovered a new favorite band! Same thing happened to me 19 years ago. Eulogy was the song that sent me down the rabbit hole of an obsession with these fuckers
Yep, Tool Army is no joke. We love this band just as much now as we did back then. It's just timeless brilliance unlike anything ever created. If you do some reading about each member of the band you will be amazed. These individuals are just genius who just happened to love music and run into each other.
The first track to the first Tool album I ever owned. As a teenager I never paid attention to the lyrics because the music was enough fuel but as I get older lyricism takes on far more importance. This band will always be welcome wherever I go.
You're in for a treat, Jim, since you haven't listened to much Tool. If alternating time signatures, complex lyrics, bass and drums are your thing, oh boy! Many suggestions for other songs below already. Two of their most "popular" are The Pot and Sober. Enjoy!
That powerful scream is about 27/28 seconds long reflecting the amount of years it takes for Saturn to return to the exact spot it was on the day you were born. Pretty neat shit
Many people have suggested "Lateralus," from the eponymous album. You may want to put that one off for a while, because once you hear it, you may be disappointed in all other music!
I am 30, I listen to hard rock/prog rock/metal since 15, and I think that very few songs have literally changed my life like this one. This is way beyond amazing. I'm literally speechless
Any other long time TOOL fans STILL get goosebumps nearly every time you hear one of their songs or see someone new reacting to it? I've probably spent several thousand hours listening to their entire catalog over and over, and yet my body still cannot help but exhibit some sort of physical reaction to it nearly ever time (goosebumps, hair standing up, sudden chills, etc.). No other music does that to me.
Watching these videos is making me want to see them live for a third time. Absolutely the best live performance. They’ve been my favorite band since the late 90’s. 👍🏻
Reminding me this album is 18 years old...I can remember buying this when it came out during my senior year of high school. :P Making me feel old aside, I'm glad you enjoyed that song - Lateralus is one of my favorite albums.
Kinda like you I remember buying Aenima my junior year in high school and I made my friends listen to it on a trip to upstate NY. Unfortunately they didn’t get the music at that point shit I didn’t as well being so young. Over the next few years... I got it and loved it. Jimmy, H., Third Eye, Pushit...even the weird German crap that was going on lol. Also agree Lateralus is definitely top 3 all time favorite albums for me.
Don't try to follow time signatures with Tool. It'll make you lose yer hair... errrmm... well, you know what I mean. And speaking of tour-de-force, Tool made a song with lyrics according to the fibonacci sequence...
Lateralus (that song) and Parabol/Parabola off the same album are absolutely beautiful. Honestly, the whole Lateralus album is gorgeous. And if you want to see Carey cut loose on the drums, Ticks and Leeches is the song for you.
Chris Check Lately I’m into their early stuff again too. Undertow is a great song. Shades of the prog that was to come. Intolerance also . More aggressive, but so great
Chris Check No doubt it’s their best top to bottom. Personally for me 10,000 Days is next, Undertow, then Aenima. I’m in the minority as far as putting Aenima last, But for me I just didn’t connect with that album on the whole like I did the others. Although I do think Aenima has probably at least a couple of their best songs.
Carlos Godsallios As someone relatively new to the band I'd say Rosetta Stoned is not the best song to start with. I'd much rather start with the classics, sober, 46&2, Stinkfist, Schism or The Pot.
Bass Lightyeah yeah I agree for songs to slowly lead someone into the band but I was just pointing out that if he LIKES stuff with crazy time changes etc and polyrhythms Then Rosetta stoned is by far the most complex
I must say, of all the reaction videos I’ve seen, yours is the most visceral. The bewilderment of everything they pour into their tunes and the appreciation of it along with the technical comprehension of what you’re experiencing are a pure joy to watch! Cheers!!
Jim...Jim...Hey Jim, I love your first reactions to TOOL. It reminds me of my reactions the first time I heard these songs. I have been with TOOL since 1993. Thank you for taking time to listen to these masterpieces.
Edward Mahler So not quite as of ‘92... on the first EP. What album is your current favorite? It’s always changing for me, but right now it’s probably Lateralus.
I am of the belief that Danny was created in the island of Dr Moreau by splicing gorilla, octopus, and cheetah, all together. He has such strength, flexibility, and speed, yet he plays songs as complex as this with inhuman ease. It's just mind-boggling watching that man-beast play.
I love this song so much, especially Danny's playing. He keeps it fairly conserved for the majority of the song (speaking in terms of Danny standards), and right at the end he just fucking ASSAULTS the listener. The first time I heard this song, I was absolutely baffled by his playing, and still am. I hate to be "That Guy", but Danny really is a god among mortals.
You hit the nail on the head. They can make beautifully complicated compositions, yet they arrange it in such a way that there’s space between all instruments. No one instrument overwhelms the mix. Brilliance. Listen to Jambi. The guitarist (Adam), is playing essentially the bass line early on with palm-muted rhythmic patterns. Very unusual and unique arrangement. Incredible stuff. If you want the height of their instrumental capabilities, go for Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned. They need to be played together, and you’ll probably want to scan the lyrics beforehand. It’s basically a story based on a very realistic acid trip a friend of theirs had. The music is serious, but there’s plenty of humor in the lyrics.
It’s quite a nice surprise that you discover Tool now. It’s refreshing to see your reactions indeed! I started listening to them in 1997-1998 and the song that got me was “46&2” and still is my favourite (first love you know) There are many more complicated songs and all of them are just terrific. To the day, no other band makes me feel the goosebumps better than them. Enjoy!
The whole premise of this song is about maturity and development, while using alchemical, astronomical, and mythological symbolism. The irony is that Maynard doesn't want people to focus on the lyrics, but their lyrics are so well thought out and portrayed that you just wnat to. You start listening to tool once for the music, twice for the lyrics, and thrice plus ten times for repetition. And down the rabbit hole you'll go as well. Thumbs up.
THIS IS THE ONE. This is the one that I've been looking for (and probably you too). Your first reaction to TOOL on video. @ 2:00 I started thinking, " Just wait." Haha. Again, a great analysis and I'm excited for your excitement.
The whole song is actually in different subdivisions of 5! Sometimes the pulse is in eighths, sometimes quarters. I couldn't really get my head around it the first few listens. Danny also plays a trick at the "Let go" section by adding a quarter note pulse polyrhythm over the eighth note pulse you had been feeling before.
Man I loved seeing your reaction to the part at 9:22. To me that section feels like these guys were holding back a monster and then they let it loose inside your head and it's completely unrestrained. I've listened to this song hundreds of times, it kicks my ass every single time.
Based off your reaction. Keep on going with the album. This is the 1st song off of Lataralus aka the holy gift. This album like all there albums are one really long track. So to get the full picture do the next song on the album "the patient"
Hey Jim, it is 2019 and I am 46 in the UK too and I am sad to say I have only just discovered Tool myself. Long time metal head since the 80's big hair days. How on earth did I miss these guys! I feel so disappointed to have missed so many years of them not in my life. Absolutely out of this world! My reaction to the songs are pretty much the same as yours in all your Tool videos. Keep rocking!!
You listened to The Grudge as your first song from Tool and you 'got it,' completely, on your first try. Experiencing your genuine reaction in this video makes me so damn happy. Thanks for doing what you're doing, yours is probably my favorite reaction channel of all :)
I can just see your mind exploding over and over again. I can relate. When you discover Tool, their 7+ minute songs just aren't long enough. You don't want each song to end.
Matt Bartimus exactly...you're not the first to point out the obvious to me lol. Yes...i like watching tool reactions. And quite apparent by the poeple who say the exact same thing as you..they r doing the same lol. I always find it ironic the people who point this out. But ya, youre point exact, youre checkin for the same shit as me. I go once or twice a day and check for any new reactions. I love to see if people new to tool, get it the same we do. Theyre my favorite band, their music has changed the i way listen to music in general. Changed my life in many ways..the thought, musicianship, and topics of choice relate to my life alot. Everything from undertow on onwards. To me..represents the anger, angst, aggression to the young me with their early stuff. And the growth and open mindeness through their evolution from opiate to 10000 days. Its amazing art imo. And i love watching people who havent heard there music before, hear it for the first time. And hope to see them possibly see what i and millions of other fans hear when they get their music. Tool army for life homie.
Fckgogle Pluss Tool has been my top go to band for many, many years. I also check daily for new Tool reactions just so I can see people get the new and fresh experience as I once did. Hope to see you around! #mydrugisTool
Reading these comments. A reiteration of the thoughts I feel when I try to get my wife (and others as well) to appreciate the profound beauty/wisdom/magic/mystery (adverb and adjectives can go on for awhile) that nearly any Tool song can elicit. Particularly Laterallus. I think it was the first Tool album I heard repetitively over the course of time, but simultaneously didn't hear it at all. I clearly recall listening to it repeatedly during the first couple years following its release. I worked at a regional (but national) telecom company, updating and digitizing telecom maps b/n 2000-2005. For countless hours this CD might play on repeat as I worked my days. It was a background sound that soothed and motivated. I never had any idea of the lyrical content, only that it seemed somehow important. That in itself is odd to me thinking back, because I never ignore lyrics, but since few were readily available at the time, and I was busy doing my work, I didn't delve. I simply enjoyed. It was a few year later, after 10,000 Days that I somewhat started listening. But again, I didn't listen on understand. I just enjoyed. Fast forward around 10 years. A couple years ago I dug out the first cassette tape of a Tool CD a friend had given me back in 92 or thereabouts that I liked, but again, never "heard". By this time (2016~) I had been a long time (albeit very tardy) Bill Hicks fan. Now I started realizing the connection. My world was beginning to have a new clarity. Now I hear Tool MUSIC and am grasping the profound template for what was in my head, possibly where pieces emerged, the significance, more so, the beauty, the depth... It's not just rock music, it's much more.
5:14 gives me goosebumps every time. Love the timing change. Tool are masters of the art of playing with timing signatures. Great band full of talented dudes. Look forward to hopefully hearing the new album this year!
I just finished the vid. I recently have found a new and profound love for the music of Tool. As well as so much more as well. I don't have a killer pair headphones. I have a reasonably killer stereo in my living room, but because I needed to do in wall speakers, there isn't a 'sweet spot' to listen to really. I have an old stereo that has some recently rebuilt old school type 3way speakers that have a really nice presence, and when listening to CD music it is pretty dynamic! But my primary listening space is my Honda Odyssey that I recently did a nice bit of work on is my main place to hear music. Installing 2 pairs of very nice 2way speakers, with x-overs and such, I'm finding that every day I hear sounds I never recognized in music I've been listening to for 30+ years. Tool in particular! The amazingness of every Tool piece astounds my mind in ways I can't understand how I never realized it previously!
WATCHING PEOPLE DISCOVER TOOL IS ONE OF THE GEMS OF LIFE.
- Jai I know, right? I’ve been watching a ton of these videos of people discovering TooL lately. Not sure why it’s so fascinating.
Because we're jealous
Correct.
I'm always shocked people havent heard tool before. But when I find those people I love the fact that I can witness their first reactions to tool. And 100% of the time they gain an addiction of some size to the music.
Especially when they say 'wow' at the right bits.
"It's quite long - eight and a half minutes"
Oh, you sweet summer child xD
Oh man. We got another one people. Unfortunately, once you start listening to Tool, it makes most other music seem rather dull.
Rosetta Stoned or Jambi.

Trevor Lott 👊😁🤘

What is the obsession with 10,000 days recommendations? I don't get it. Specifically Rosetta Stoned. I've been listening to Tool for 20 years and that is one of their worst songs IMO.
naiginod your opinion is shit
Because of this band I don't buy or use cheap headphones
Dry Ferr I bought a decent pair a few weeks ago just to prepare for the new album lol
I have a problem .. seriously I own too many god damn pairs of cans and buds ..and it all started because I wanted good headphones to listen to tool with .
Best I’ve heard- audeze lcd. Incredible.
Holy shit me too I never realized it. I bought my first pair of decent headphones in the lead up to Lateralus.
Problem is their production/recording isn’t that great to give great headphones a chance to really shine.
You talked about how well it’s mixed, then you see them live and it sounds exactly the same you realize how brilliant they are as musicians.
"God....this is complicated..." Maybe the best summation of Tool's music I've ever heard
I fucking hate it when im scrolling the comments and I come to a comment that he says the instant I scroll by it. how does that always happen
I think they're music is more than just complicated
@@drhexagonapus I would say it's more complex than complicated.
Discovering tool in 2018? i envy your new attraction. i recommend doing more of their songs if you want to continue blowing your mind.

"I don't know what to say" => perfect response to listening to "the grudge" for the first time. My favorite Tool song
Finally someone who reviews videos that actually knows music lol
Exactly what I was thinking
This reaction is amazing wow
The best ending in any metal song in my opinion. Complete destruction :)
Yep, Tool Army is no joke. We love this band just as much now as we did back then. It's just timeless brilliance unlike anything ever created. If you do some reading about each member of the band you will be amazed. These individuals are just genius who just happened to love music and run into each other.
“I need to listen to more Tool” - my thoughts exactly 25 years ago.
The first track to the first Tool album I ever owned. As a teenager I never paid attention to the lyrics because the music was enough fuel but as I get older lyricism takes on far more importance. This band will always be welcome wherever I go.
I love seeing that moment when someone falls in love with Tool.
You're in for a treat, Jim, since you haven't listened to much Tool. If alternating time signatures, complex lyrics, bass and drums are your thing, oh boy! Many suggestions for other songs below already. Two of their most "popular" are The Pot and Sober. Enjoy!
Xenophon my favourite personally is hooker with a penis haha
adamdajani That was my favorite in middle school! Finding tabs online was a mystery back then. But man if you want aggressive thatll do!
AEnima never gets old.
46 and 2 is a pretty big hit.
The Pot is easily the worst Tool song IMO, other than some of the joking interlude tracks. Not sure how it made the final cut lol
Try schism it's really good, jambi is also a good one, Rosetta stone as well as lost keys
You are so lucky you haven't listened to much Tool before. You're in for a real treat. All of their music is fantastic.
Danny Carey is an absolute machine, his drumming is so unreal, love Tool and if you ever get a chance see them live;)
Vicarious is a good one, there are so many to choose from though.
bryan ashton It might have the most epic ending in modern hard rock history
J Sanders I agree. The Grudge is up there as well.
bryan ashton Vicarious is a masterpiece!
TOOL is a release in every sense of the word. Layered
"That's a powerhouse. That's an absolute tour de force of music, that is."
That's how they chose to open an album. It gets better from there.
That song never ceases to blow me the fuck away. Never.
That powerful scream is about 27/28 seconds long reflecting the amount of years it takes for Saturn to return to the exact spot it was on the day you were born. Pretty neat shit
I've been the typical obsessed tool fan for over 20 years...you just blew my fuzzy brain
Konrad Potgieter haha good, I'm not a typical tool "fan"
last time I heard a note held that long was in the 3 Amigos movie
You must be under 27-28 lol
Man this is such a dope observation :D
Many people have suggested "Lateralus," from the eponymous album. You may want to put that one off for a while, because once you hear it, you may be disappointed in all other music!
Danny Carey just smacks you in the face right there at the end!

Watching these videos is making me want to see them live for a third time. Absolutely the best live performance. They’ve been my favorite band since the late 90’s. 👍🏻
I barely saw the thumbnail and thought this was a Joe Rogan video
IsraelSilvaMonje Ha me too!
Joe had Stefan Molyneaux on again I see 😂
Stefan Molynrevieux
This song still gives me chills whenever I allow myself to be taken in by it. So good.
This song gets cranked as high as my car stereo will go every morning at 630 am. It takes me every time
When Danny runs through those subdivisions on the kick drum always gets me. Every single time.
Thats the first song of the album. Enough said.
7:12. "THIS IS BONKERS!!!" (In a good way) Cracks me up every time.
I love it! You are almost speechless. Been listening for 20 years, still get goosebumps myself.
Tool is fundamentally flawless. Then they experiment outside of those fundamentals. Perfection imo.
The time signature is all of them man. It always is with these guys.

Danny also plays a trick at the "Let go" section by adding a quarter note pulse polyrhythm over the eighth note pulse you had been feeling before.
Tool is life. They are more than a band, they are a way of viewing the world.
listen to lateralus (fibonacci sequence)
Man I loved seeing your reaction to the part at 9:22. To me that section feels like these guys were holding back a monster and then they let it loose inside your head and it's completely unrestrained. I've listened to this song hundreds of times, it kicks my ass every single time.
Very well said, sir!
Based off your reaction. Keep on going with the album. This is the 1st song off of Lataralus aka the holy gift. This album like all there albums are one really long track. So to get the full picture do the next song on the album "the patient"
cracking choice - a LOT of good ones still to watch :) Fave band by far. So many people only just finding their music
I love your reaction when it all ends...my reaction exactly!
"This is bloody brilliant." -Ron Weasley
You listened to The Grudge as your first song from Tool and you 'got it,' completely, on your first try. Experiencing your genuine reaction in this video makes me so damn happy. Thanks for doing what you're doing, yours is probably my favorite reaction channel of all :)
this is the song with the sickest outro of all time of existence of man
Another masterpiece is And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope by Ne Obliviscaris. I know you've tried one of their tunes but this one is even better.
Never really watch reaction videos, but seeing this lad getting more and more into this has made my day X)
I can just see your mind exploding over and over again. I can relate. When you discover Tool, their 7+ minute songs just aren't long enough. You don't want each song to end.
Yes ! Im subbed. Hoping to see you discover more tool.
Fckgogle Pluss I swear I see you on every Tool reaction! But I guess that means I’m on every tool reaction myself lol
I'm mildly addicted to watching videos of people discovering Tool. :D 9:55 sums it up perfectly.
One of the best reactions of this song that I've seen here. Tool are brilliant. I rock out to them on my Koss Porta Pros.
I keep watching this over and over again. Pure reaction.
5:14 gives me goosebumps every time. Love the timing change. Tool are masters of the art of playing with timing signatures. Great band full of talented dudes. Look forward to hopefully hearing the new album this year!
Listen to all of it, everything they have ever done and will ever do.
Congrats on poping your tool cherry
When it's so good it leaves you speechless...
Jambi! Also... Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days together. The Patient is another often overlooked masterpiece of theirs.
As Rick Beato shows in What Makes This Song Great, Schism changes metre, almost 50 times!
There's no looking back now dude. Enjoy the ride!
