Lateralus is about that feeling you get when you listen to Lateralus for the first time.
8/
Why have you done this
@Lissette Spanner How did it go?
And reaching *The Gaping Lotus Experience* after *Opiate* is what Maynard meant by : _"We may just go where no one's been."_
Underrated Comment!
I'm getting a very hand-drawing-itself-eschery kind of vibe from this comment.
You seem like the kind of guy I'd like to have a beer with.
Nothing better than going down the pub, drinking some beers, putting the world to rights, and talking music shit all night!
Sure. You, on the contrary... :P
First round and song selection is on me.
@@JimNewstead yeah, i was going to say lots of beers.
Sounds like presidential material to me
There's a sense of empathy, vicariously watching another musonaut hear something for the first time, as if you yourself hadn't heard it before. The haters can go jump.
Dan J. Boyd YES! Living vicariously through someone hearing music that you love for the first time is amazing, plus you get to share music you like. Plus you get to hear new music yourself recommended by others
If you understand Tool, the haters really are irrelevant.
I see what you did there with the whole "vicariously watching". You're not to quick for me there, Chief.
Tool will definitely stand the test of time. The Grudge and Lateralus came out 20 years ago.
And they sound just as amazing and fresh as they did all those years ago.
Came out 18 years ago but close
tool isnt only music... tool is a religion... and religion never gets old...
Shabutie554 it seems to be growing which makes it all a little sweeter. It’s sooo cool to watch someone’s eyes and you can see the “light turn on” to something we have known about all along!
Both Aenima and Lateralus sound like they came out this morning. F'n amazing!!!!!
I like your approach of listening to a whole number without interrupting it, and then analyzing it. I like this better than the guys who insist on stopping a vid every 30 seconds or so to make comments.
Yea , what he said!^^^
I agree. I mean first of all it has respected. Second While experiencing a Tool composition There’s so many things in terms of layers and complexity that can get lost. There’s different layers within this song in terms of each band member doing the Fibonacci sequence including Menard in terms of his accents on the beat Ryans music and then they all come together at the end of each section.. The colors black and white most have come to consensus it’s a progression through time starting with an infant you see in black-and-white one of the big themes within the Tool world is the spiral. Anyway it is for you to read into that’s why Maynard writes these great works of art is to challenge the listener.. Always know Menard is challenging you and sometimes even leading you down a rabbit hole.. For example Stinkfist and Pushit. It’s been pretty funny to watch some of the reactions on those two. in the tool community that’s known as spiraling out of control.
“Cerebral”: one of the many perfect words to describe Tool
I would say patience
Haha
The strangest thing to me is no one suggesting 46&2, that just shows how many amazing songs Tool has.
My favorite song in the library so far.
My favorite Tool song, 46+2
I will say this song wrapped itself around my soul ever since I listened to it tripping (lsd).
I can't help getting euphoric while listening to it.
I’ve found that I find enjoyment in watching complete strangers experience music that I love for the first time. That’s all I need to know. Really appreciate your reactions, especially the fact that you can catch, and understand the many little intricacies that lie underneath the top layer of most songs. That’s what makes Tool my favorite band. It’s the creativity, plain and simple. Enjoy the show, look forward to more!
Josh Frie search for HecticReacts, VinAnd Sori. the other ones i forgot...
KingbassK yeah I’ve been following lost in Vegas, hectic and vin and sorri haha they all bring something different to the table
ruclips.net/video/qcyXiYVIWpA/видео.html this is Dylan Caldwell. he's got some cool tool reactions. Or Fish out of water, you can see him become to love tool.
There's a sense in which trying to imagine what it's like for this person to hear this song for the first time allows you to notice things that you hadn't seen before. I've loved this song for nearly a decade but it feels fresh for some reason.
Gabriel Lucas i think that Tool is an intresting band if you have musical knowledge.. play an instrument. because then you know what is happening. in my opinion, tool is just one big metal jam session. Adam and Justin provide the riffs and Dany arranges the song and Maynard is a dick.
I like reactions because I can't listen to Lateralus for the first time again. So I get to live vicariously though you, sir!
Best Tool song ever. The Fibonacci sequence in the syllabe count is a great touch.
It's deeper than just syllables. Its incredible and hurts my head to explain.
You should listen to the studio-verson of Tool - Pushit. Then, jump straight over to the live-version of the song from the Salival-album which takes it to a completely different and beautiful direction.
Love watching people who really know and understand music listening to Tool songs for the first time
Check out Dean Wolfe's channel- he's reacted to every Tool song there is (aside from Opiate). Start with his first react to Lateralus. It brought him to tears, and he's been a Tool fan ever since.
The coolest part of this song to me is what Carey does in the middle; at 8:20 he's playing on the hi-hat in 5/16 overtop the band's 4/4. Then at 9:02 he goes into a 5/8 groove overtop the 4/4.
kylestyyle987 you’re correct! Not many people can pick that stuff apart. I’m gonna venture you’re a percussionist too?
kylestyyle987
I've always wondered what the hell he is doing with the hihat there. It makes sense when I count it out now. Thanks
Truth Seeker I'm actually primarily a trumpet player, but I'm also a big theory nerd so I get a kick out of things bizarre time signatures and polyrhythms.
im a drummer but im no theory expert but drums are 5/16, bass is 6/8, and the guitar is like swung quarters? always been one of my favorite pieces of music since driving around smoking weed on release day of this album having my entire soul changed
There’s always haters and shitheads no matter what the content man. Just ignore it. I’m a huge tool fan, and I LOVE watching people experience my favorite music for the first time.
Exactly! Cheers!
I love how you're like...'this isn't going to become a tool review based channel'...nek minute you listen to Lateralus and now you've joined the rest of us down the rabbit hole. Welcome home.
Anyone who first discovers Tool, and who has ANY appreciation for the intricate and amazing nature of Tool and their musical ability in general, soon realizes that once they hear their sound find themselves beyond the “event horizon”......permanently drawn into them without the ability to ever hear music the same again. Once you hear Tool, their sound becomes the benchmark by which ALL other music is measured.
It is this way for me, and I find I am consistently disappointed by music by other groups simply because I find myself measuring it against what I consider the apex of sonic perfection, Tool....
@@ilovetacos6092 Seriously...I log into RUclips while working and all I get are TOOL suggestions from the algorithm. I used to listen to purely classic rock...now it all sounds so simple and sort of empty, if that makes sense. Nothing compares to Maynard's vocals, Danny's fills, and the magic that Justin and Adam create.
@@ilovetacos6092 Great comment, I fell the same way...
I like your attitude, Jim. I've watched all your TOOL reaction videos. They are the best!
Physionic and he havent even heard 46&2
Check out King KTF...
Ive ALWAYS compared TOOL to classical masterpieces because of the ability to put such complicated compositions out that work and sound amazing!
Preach!!!!!!!
At 8 mins the hi hat is in 5 and everything else is in 4 mind bloooooown
The band used the ultrasound of one of their wives with child for the intro. Fun factoid.
Aha! I was right!
Citizen Kreg which member’s wife?
So they brought an ultrasound machine into the studio?
RC Rampulla maybe they went to the hospital 😂
I just want to say that the way you explain a piece of music like this song lasting through time is so true. Lateralus will be one piece of music that people from the future can appreciate just like how we appreciate the classics now such as Beethoven, Mozart, etc. And i'm so proud to have been around for such an iconic song that will become one of the greatest songs of all time
Always loved the way this song builds and builds...
Me too.
The song is absolutely about Hermeticism and it's wonderfully done.
For that future Tool reaction, Right in Two is a masterpiece and the most under rated in my opinion. keep it up super chill videos
Chris Hansen amazing Song indeed. While I was in Afghanistan my wife gave birth, I was listening to Right In Two when my boss ran in and told me to call my wife as she gave birth. 9 years later every time I hear that song it takes me back to an extremely happy time in life.
Yup. Poppy they say, cheesy sometimes. But it has one of the best riffs of all time and it's played only two times and then it's deconstructed and put together less beautiful but more intense and rips your melodic heart right in two.
knightkrawler - I don’t mean to offend, but how is that song “poppy” or “cheesy” at all? I’ve never heard that, ever.
@@scottjackson3347 ...among other Tool songs, I mean. I've heard that.
I do love that song so much I can never find anything that can get tool up loud enough and I have about 3000 watts all together in my single cab truck
There are a few bands of my generation( 90’s) whose work has withstood the test of time. These bands are Tool, early Metallica and Alice In Chains. I have even heard high school kids blasting Social Distortion and Bad Religion like it was new. Immediately, my faith was restored in today’s adolescents.
Hmmmm, I know of Alice In Chains, but am ashamed to say I don't think I could name you a song that they're ever written. My bad!
I enjoy this style of video because it's like sharing great music with your friends, great music they've never heard. The reaction from them takes you back to the first time you heard it.
Always awesome seeing someone experience this song for the first time! You're right, it's a masterpiece on every level, including technicality. This track would be perfect in a music theory class!
I love watching Tool reaction videos to see that joy in people for the first time. Yours are especially great because, unlike most, you allow the song to play in it's entirety without lots of pausing. Thank you for this! I watch others too and understand why they do it, but I appreciate someone who gets it enough to wait.
Cheers from Nebraska! You rock. please keep up the great work and content.
when I first came accross your channel, first I thought how many Tool songs this guy is listening to. I've never heard of Tool before and the more I hear their music, the more I like it !
They're such an amazing band. Fkn incredible. Should you get the chance to see them live, I highly recommend it! Definitely an experience!!!
Watched every Tool reactor on RUclips and still think your Tool reactions are the best FWIW.
Thanks so much. I do it for the love of the music rather than being best, but by not being sensationalist about the reactions, perhaps it’s the authenticity of my vids that’s catching people’s eye! Just being me and listening to music 🤪😃👍🏼
@@JimNewstead hopefully we can get some new music soon from them for you to react to. You should do one for Adam Jones The Witness.
Man i wish i could discover Tool in 2018
kuguar13 I feel the same way! It’s inspiring that a band that hasn’t released an album in 12 years and only have 5 albums total in 28 years can be gathering new fans in 2018.
I discovered tool in 2019
TOOL put me back on metal after a 3year hiatus, thanks to a great friend who introduced me to them
They got me in 2019
I feel blessed to have found them at 18 with Undertow and continued on a 20+ year journey as I’ve grown older. I appreciate their growth.
Really enjoy your vids and your reaction in this video particularly reminded me of the first time I heard Lateralus. Epic piece of music. Keep up the vids, love it!
Never stop. Love your stuff!
Hey Jim...Long Island here. Love your Tool reactions and the way you breakdown the meaning of the songs. Welcome to the Tool fam. I’ve been listening since I was 14 back in ‘93.
Gojira - Flying Whales
You're so great! Make a lot of Tool reaction i sooo enjoy that! Just push it! from Hungary!
Jambi.
I second this one Jim. It's so different but somehow still so Tool's style if that makes any sense lol. Also just one a week would be great :)
when you're born you see in black and white then colors come along slowly
Love your reactions brother…❤️🇨🇦
And I LOVE TOOL!!!
Love your approach to Tool. Many people listen to the music in a surficial kind of way and they don't even get 10% of what Tool is about. Keep your open mind great channel!
Hey we arent greedy man, one a week is fine 😁🤘🌀
We request Tool often because we feel u appreciate the skill n depth of the band in my opinion that said i think ud like Opeth as well thnx n best to ya
I notice so many people have this theory about the colors and the relation to some kind of trip. It's more simple than that I believe. When we are born we first only see in black and white shapes. As our eyes develop we start to see colors. Really it seems so obvious that the song shows us that to truly grow we need to take chances, push the envelope as is stated. Some of the lyrics show us what impedes our quest for growth and some how we may achieve growth. The spiral refers to the pattern produced in nature according to the golden ratio, thus as with nature we should spiral out, or keep going (growing).
I’ve had this album for almost 20 years now, and whenever I hear this song I get goosebumps and teary -eyed. Especially at around the 7:21 mark(of the song, not this video) when Justin’s bass comes in. It’s an amazing piece of music. I would give a finger to go back and hear it for the first time.
Do a reaction for Wings for Marie part 1 and 2 from the 10,000 days album. It will take you on a journey for 18 minutes and drop you off back home in time for dinner :)
Tool2142 what a fucking gay description
thats not very Jesus like
Fuck you Jesus
I'm dying here
For some reason I feel like Wings should be saved for after hearing most of AEnima, Lateralus, and 10,000 Days. I think a lot of people do these songs too early and can miss some of the story behind the lyrics and emotion in his voice.
But just throwing out some thoughts I had about it after watching Hectic and Vin and Sori reactions. But great suggestion no matter when he does it. You can't really go wrong with Wings v:)
This is the best song. Unbelievable drumming.
I could listen to this all day, everyday. Its FUCKING BRILLIANT.
At 10:46 this part has always been my favorite part in this song. Everything completely changes and then melds back together. It gets me every time. Great video Thank You!
Love your channel
Black then white are all I see in my infancy, red and yellow then came to be - You have to listens to this song over and over again
Way to go Jim!
I've been a Huge Tool fan since 1994 and love watching people's reaction when they get the taste of Tool... They are hooked as I was :) Who know that 10,000 Days was how long we had to wait for maybe the final Tool album.
Wow, you understood lots of the strange timings and complexities of the song at the first listen (like the ending with the drums in 2 or 4 and the guitar in 3, meeting after some measures and the bass making those pitch shifting noises with a pitch shifter). The Fibonacci sequence It's in the vocals in the verses (count the syllables). Yeah, It's my favourite song by them and one of the best songs ever written imo. A masterpiece like the rest of their discography.
Well, about the pitch shifting bass part in my previous comment, he uses a pitch shifter live, but maybe he used a fretless bass for that part.
That song's so fucking rad! I love pretty much all of their shit but that song is next level
Very cool ur first reactions are on point
The feel I always get from this song is.... to Not Think so much all the time. You miss out. :)
Love your videos Jim!! Keep at it!
Fuck me sideways, I love watching it click for the first time in someone who gets it!!!
This is like chasing that first Tool high all over again! Thank you so much, Jim, for your deep and thoughtful reactions to great music! Please keep’em coming.
Check out Right in Two- very significant and relevant in our current point in history right now, in my opinion!!
Flood is amazing as well.
You are correct. Timeless music. I think ahead of their time. Many people are just now discovering TOOL and it isn't old sounding. Not like when we were listening to Led Zeppelin or the Doors in the 90s. My kids love it.
jim you are awesome
Just found your channel and diggin your TOOL reaction videos. Nice job!
I have been sober for nearly 7 years now and tools music has never touched me more then in this last 7 years with my eyes truly open
check out the video of Danny Carey drumming this on his own... phenomenal ;)
Thank you for reacting to this song. Don’t think about it too much. Just play it and enjoy it.
That part with the bass "swirling" or "spiraling" towards the end... reminds me of water swirling or spiraling down the drain... which makes sense with the whole fibonacci spiral theme.
Good analogy!
the last two minutes of the song are pure bangers
Enjoying your take on music, lots of intelligent comments, thanks.
Always happy for u to do more 'Tool' and 'Maximum The Hormone' would be great to see also. And as someone else here said, it would be great to have a beer with you, u seem like a good bloke.
Cheers 🍻
it's about the journey of life and embracing it for what it is and making the most of it.. imo.
First off, I want to say it is so kool to see so many people who understand music so we'll! I am a lyrics person and I felt as though he was describing the desire to see the world through the simplicity of a child's eyes. As adults we complicate things.
Its about the how we come into this world and what we see first hence the colors and then the constant striving to be better and go further and never settle. Yes theres alot of other things that he brings up but the general idea is to never quit moving forward.
Tool = Brain music. I've never heard anyone put it like that but it's an excellent way of putting it. I love your analysis on this video and it seems to be very genuine. It's my first time here and I look forward to more of your content. Thanks for putting the time in.
I love listening to Lateralus..before I go the POT
Yeah, its back online!!
Good vids Jim.
Colossal props for the opening salvo.
Thanks for the Tool fix!
Thank you for doing this! Puscifer and A Perfect Circle are Maynard's other bands. Quality stuff there as well. Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Baroness are two of my favorite other bands.
I've been thinking of making a video or something in defense of reaction videos. I used to hate them, but only through videos of people reacting to Tool have I realized how entertaining they can be. I've listened to Lateralus for, what, 18 years now, and even though it stands the test of time, it's never quite like I heard it the first time. This song really changed my life. I still spiral out. It made me better. Watching people experience it for the first time reminds me of the effect it had on me. It's like showing a video to your friend that you really find meaningful, and seeing if they enjoy it too. It's to feel connected.
I love your reactions to Tool! (And I totally understand you don’t want to become just a Tool channel).
You actually help me discover things I haven’t noticed in the songs and I’ve listened to them a lot. But I’m not that musically talented.
I love this song. It's extreeemely alchemical, I had to study it for initiation. Crazy cool honesty.
Always a treat people experiencing tool not mention my favorite song
Top 3 reactions bud. Nice job
I'm by no means a professional musician BUT music is my most intense passion. And I look at music on the same level of analytical appreciation for the raw talent and genius in music. And your reaction videos are amazing because you articulate exactly what I hear and listen for. Love your content sir. Dont ever stop.
Excellent. Had loads of fun with this one. In large part, you remind me of Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. Super fun to listen to.
A lot of Tool songs take you on a journey, I would have to add Parabol/Parabola to that list. An epic combination of melodic lyrics and complex music, I think you would really enjoy it. One of my all time favorite Tool songs.
Tool's song greatly benefit from multiple listens and get better with each one. There is a reason they've been around for 27 years (1991 I think) and will defiantly withstand the test of time.
Wow that's damn near 10,000 days haha
Hey man, these have been my favourite band since I saw them in 2002. Ive never obsessed over a band so much and its good to see a similar reaction. Listen to Lateralus front to back, with all the interludes. Then Aenima and 10,000 days. They will consume you and everything else you listen to will pale in comparison. Enjoy my friend. Enjoy.
Black and white is the first colors babies see, then red and yellow as they get older, then the full spectrum of color by the time they are no longer infants.
The purpose of the song is to always be reaching outside the box.
The references to the spiral are because so many things in nature look like spirals, including our galaxy.
Riding the spiral to the end is riding the spiral in our galaxy never knowing what happens next.
Yo. Let the tears come. Trust me, I get it. Still gives me chills. Listening to Tool with good sound is an emotional experience. Oh and I once read that the earliest forms of the human eye began with identifing simple black and whites. Then came red and yellow... get it, spiral out... evolve. Desire to feel connected, push the envelope, bathe in the fountain... live life to it's fullest...
I hate reactionvideos, but you are one great human being. Really liked it. Keep it up that way! :)
Saw them in my hometown of Columbus Ohio 6 days ago,, shit was incredible
Thanks , Jim! Awesome to see you enjoying this band. This album seems to be a good start for you. You may want to consider Parabol/Parabola off of it.
I absolutely adore the way someone's face lights up the first time listening to a tool song. It brings me back to my discovery days. One might say I live VICARIOUSly through these reactions haha! Ha... I will see myself out.
Haha! You're very welcome here, my friend!
Daniel M I wish I can get into a time machine to hear their songs for the first time again.
YOU WILL NEVER KEEP US QUIET, DO YOU HEAR US....... NEVEEEEERRRR!!!! :D :D :D
Hearing this song for the first time is truly an otherworldly experience
Just ignore the people shitting on your videos man, if you let them get to you then they win. Keep doing what your doing, your videos are awesome!
What an album 💯🔥🧯🚒💪😈
Hell yes!
Led Zepplin had an amazing song titled "no quatrer." TOOL has their version, you be the judge
ITS FUCKING AMAZING
this album, a masterpiece it is, no match no competition, it just is, even tool themselves cant beat that no more,
