Preston. Thank you for this. And, once again, you’re on the correct path of thought. You referenced the many different interpretations of this song; and that, in itself, acknowledges the essence of Tool. The lyrics certainly come from a personal space for Maynard, but they’re written in a way that can be interpreted differently by different people and applied to their unique circumstances. This song helped save my marriage. I always liked this song. But, as my marriage approached a crash landing, The Grudge helped me through the darkest time of my life. At that point, I truly understood the song, for me, on an emotional level. Every. Fucking. Detail. To me, this song represents our desire to hold onto grudges as a feeling of power over those who have hurt us and the need to release that anger and let go in order to heal our wounds and repair those relationships. Even the otherworldly scream bear the end- I’ve learned to appreciate understand and feel every last second of it. It wasn’t some self-indulgent display of an amazing vocalist. That was the honest primal desire and attempt to exorcise the pain of transgression and the resulting anger- to rid oneself of their grudge- so that they may heal and become whole again. So that the subject can move on and repair the damaged relationship. He wants nothing more in life and that urge can be felt through every last second of that scream. I cannot count the number of tears I’ve shed at that point in that song. It still rocks me to my core. Thank you for your incredible reviews Preston. Keep on keepin’ on Brother.

Before the release of the latest album, I would've agreed with you. There are definitely some very "...meh" tracks there and some of the interludes are just terrible.
The whole format for Lateralus is based on the progression through the Tree of Life. The first node is Malkuth (Kingdom). The tenth node is Keter/Kether (Crown). So "Choose One or Ten... The One, The Ten" is the first and last, the alpha and omega, but it also implies that the Tree is inverted back on top of itself. Saturn, in astrology, represents the intense manifestation of karmic debt "Drags you down like a stone, or lifts you up again". So all our misdeeds are judged and punished with impunity. In short, it's payback time. However, by working through them, doing the work, serving the time, or generally analyzing our own flaws, we are given the key to break out of the illusion of pain for our earthly toil, allowed a salvation, or a baptism "Let the waters kiss and transmutate". And if we grip to our egos, our pride, define our realities by our blind spots, "This cold and fated anchor", and refuse to let the illusion of reality dissolve around us, then the Cosmic forces will put you in your place, "Sinking Deeper" in our personal prisons. Eventually we must Let GO of the idea of control, the need to attempt to define or manipulate things which are ultimately outside of our basic understandings.
Also regarding Saturn, when Maynard references Saturn coming back around, I believe he’s referring to what is called the Saturn Return in astrology. Saturn is about responsibility, limitations, karma... he’s like a judgmental father, or the teacher with the most difficult assignments that you hated but you learned the most from. Basically, the return will show you where you’ve fucked up in life and where you’ve succeed and you will choose to either take accountability and continue to aim toward becoming your best Self, or you can hold a grudge or become resentful and turn your back on personal responsibility, which can only bring ruin. People usually notice a lot of changes around 30 years old....

I totally agree with this. I've listened to a lot of music in my day, but nothing I've listened to compares to the complex, thought-provoking, mind-altering sounds that come from Tool. In my opinion, Pink Floyd is the closest thing to how I feel when I listen to Tool.
@Pool Marcus I understand what I think you mean. Tool is my favorite band, hands down, since I first heard them. As a 48yr man, they remind me very much of Pink Floyd. Not in sound style or even type of rock music. They are so similar to me, because both bands have such an utterly unique sound. What I mean is, as soon as you hear a Tool or Floyd guitar/bass/drum riff, you KNOW that's them, long before the lead singer has ever uttered a word.
"Tool just always impresses me"... right on man, been listening to them since the mid 90s in high school... still listening to them today... nothing like them, they are an experience of their own.
There is no favorite Tool song....it's impossible to decide which is best. My top 5 list would change depending on which day you ask. They're just that good.
When I was younger the question came up "who is my favorite band?" It depends on my mood, but we came up with: if I got exiled/marooned/whatever and I could only have the music of one artist or band, who would it be? Who could I listen to, over and over? For years my answer was Pink Floyd, hands down. I think it was Lateralus (the album "The Grudge" came from) that changed "my favorite" to Tool.
Tom Kenney Same but I got back into tool on my dads CD of Ænima a year ago before FI released, won’t ever forget the first time I listened to lateralus either though
Sometimes we listen to things we love so often and frequently that we kill it or get over saturated with it. Watching you discover and react to those things is a way to find them a new. A rebirth of a past love.
This song helped me learn that I shouldn't let anger or hate define who I am as a person. Helped me realise it fragments your soul and destroys you from within.
I love your face throughout the entire song...it's that tool "concentrated smiling satisfied wtf" look that I've had thousands of times! You are awesome and just the correct person to do tool reaction videos
Grudge may be the best opening song on any album. Just sets the tone and gets you amped for what’s coming. And if you want chaos, you gotta do Third Eye. That song is a journey like no other.
I just came up on your video, I'm 42 years old, I have been listening to Tool since I was in high school. Sober came on one night, I was watching then M TVs Headbangers ball, weekend sometime in 94, night time, alone... Then this happens.....
Nope. Zeppelin is just a blues based rock band. There have been hundreds of those throughout time. Floyd and Tool have their own completely unique sound. Find me another band that has put out a Shine on you Crazy Diamond...or an Echoes....or a Dark Side...at the same time TOol has the same kind of unique quality. You won't find bands that sound like either. Not to mention Zep stole half their first album. Zep has their place for sure and there is no denying it. I mean I hate to bring up the little kids...but Greta Van Fleet is sorta proving my point. You won't hear another Pink FLoyd...you won't hear another Tool. My man hit it on the head with his point.
Tool have a unique and great bass sound but that's it just like chilli peppers do, it's all about that bass sound, they are no where near pink Floyd they don't have the amazing guitar or drum sounds of pink Floyd. I've listened vto to tool tracks and it all sounds so similar. Floyd are way better. Plus vif you want bass and drums then check out Rush.
It's just a good song to remind people the weight and burden of grudges. Awesome reaction video as always. Cannot wait to hear about your first TOOL concert! :)
Just throwing this out there....Puscifer is an entirely different band, different vibe, same singer. Its obviously going to have some similar coloration, but its very different song structures. Its quality art. Id recommend something from the “conditions of my parole” album. Good stuff btw. I like watching reactions...it reminds me of the first time I heard certain songs and I get to relive those moments vicariously through your videos.
Yep. You said... nobody even comes close to TooL.. they're "just different" - and I also like the Pink Floyd mention - something I think a lot of people would agree with. I first heard TooL in '96 on the radio - Stinkfist.. during the grunge era, and was immediately drawn in thinking "holy shit, what is this?!?!" - unlike anything I'd ever heard before. Once I began to dig into the lyrics and put the meaning to the depth of the music, it literally changed my life, and as I've told many people, became a road map to higher consciousness. And it is virtually impossible to rate their songs, as they're each an epic journey of their own (at least since Aenima). I just stumbled on you and I'm loving watching your reactions, because it's reminding me of why I love TooL so much, and the overwhelming feelings it induces. As for this song's meanings, it's probably already been said, but it revolves around the "Saturn Return" - a supposed astrological event that can be learned about by googling it. It's said to happen every 29 years (iirc) in our lifetime, and I can say that I personally had this experience myself. He's referencing the choice we have to hold onto our grudges, our old ways, the destructive ways of the mind and ego, and to sink deeper into this cycle.... or to LET GO, transmutate, and rise higher, the way of spirit and higher consciousness.
My thoughts exactly n yeas plz lol I need dmt I can acquire the other 2 just fine lol but dmt it's NOT easy to find or chemist who knows wtf they're doing lol. I wonder if u can extract dmt from 4aco-dmt? Seems like a plausibility.
haknslash you forgot about freaking JUSTIN AND ADAM. Don’t tell me the bass and guitar doesn’t rock you sometimes. But yes SEEING TOOL LIVE IS UNPARALLELED to listening the albums. Like Danny Carey’s fucking drums literally kick you in the chest. Like their sound just punches you live. (In a good way) like you can feel the fucking music in the air they are incredible at putting on a live performance and experience
1998 I took my then 14 year old son to his very first concert...TOOL! It was amazing...I loved watching him experience every aspect of the event, then suddenly mosh pit mode was activated, all hell broke loose.....woohoo! Good times...
Ya need listen to albums in their entirety as they were meant to be listened! You would appreciate the songs alot more i promise you! Cool vid tho brah :) Also you listened to Puscifer? Singer's other band!! Also lisyen to Mr Bungle - if you appreciate music and musicians they will blow your mind! Mike Patton's (Faith No More) college band!

Yeah I second the mad season, but he really needs to do frogs from unplugged, I say that cause as a Alice fan I can hardly watch frogs talk about in the feels lol
@@kevinpritts1077 I know what you mean...I get that way when I hear certain songs of theirs. You know his struggle in his lyrics. And it was like that hard on their first 2 albums. I didn't understand it until I got older I just liked the music and Layne's voice. I was in Jr high when dirt came out.
The last 30 seconds is the surrender, the letting go of the worry, guilt and resentment in any situation. The scream before is the releasing point. This song has helped me get through shit more than words can describe.
Tool are truly unique. I have been listening to Metallica from the last few days and noticed that although they are undoubtedly good and talented, there is some sort of repetition in their songs (riffage, drumming, etc.). Tool are their own genre. Hope their new album drops soon!
I used to sit in a completely dark room on LSD and mushrooms and listen to complete Tool and Pink floyd albums, it became my favorite thing to do, it was absolutely incredible how far you could let it go, terrifying and absolutely incredible at the same time, sometimes I would have to turn the light back on simply cause I was afraid if I let it go any further I might not come back.
In the 90s, most every musician from every huge band at some point was seen wearing a Tool t-shirt while performing. All the best bands from that time thought Tool was in a league of their own. Really cool seeing people have that realization on their own decades later :)
@@_BLACKSTAR_ Haha... I never heard of Opeth... You made me want to check them out... So I did... I'll hand it to you... They do seem fucking musically unbelievable... But based on what I've heard... While they seem perhaps as heavy as Tool (I'm listening now to "the pain I see in others")...which is saying a lot... And they are similar in their versatility... So I understand the comparison... but they don't seem nearly as all around brilliant as Tool ... Also, the singing is, while not exactly bad (the the satanic growl thing always seemed seemed hilariously childish to me)... And no disrespect to the singer, but it doesn't seem like he's in the same stratosphere as Maynard... Maynard is just a next level superstar vocalist/lyricist... I've never heard anyone sing the way Maynard sings... I've heard many people sing the way the guy from Opeth sings. I'll keep listening to them... But that's my initial take...
Time for some old school TOOL brah! HUSH or COLD and UGLY from their first EP or ANYTHING off their UNDERTOW album man... their best and expressive stuff IMO. Shit is RAWWWWWW.
If you wanna know a band that comes close to tool is Maynard James Keenan’s other band A PERFECT CIRCLE. it’s like tools sister it a a feminine softer sound to it but his voice really shines in this band. a really good song is THE PACKAGE
Davin Dew A-motherfucking-men!!! I have described the two as exactly that. Tool is the more divine masculine and A Perfect Circle as the divine feminine. The Package is my favourite song, their live performance is the best version of the song as well. The Hollow & Pet & 3 Libras.. gaaaaaah 💦 I really think he needs to also listen to The Humbling River by Puscifer, and if you haven’t then you need to. It’s the baby, but it’s pure fucking music & lyrical magic 💙
This one happens to be my favorite of theirs. To me, the lyrics are about the futility of anger and its destructive results, whether it be on the scale of an individual or entire nations. That scream just before the outtro always struck me as the primal way to "let it go."
Check out Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize. Over the years while waiting for the new Tool album I tried finding other bands to fill that void. This is one of the songs that kind of resembles Tool and Pink Floyd
This song rides the line of not flowing well and no other group of artists could make this work, let alone play it so well that it becomes a masterpiece. It takes the Tool Touch. I've heard others try to play this and no matter how hard they try, they always take it left of center instead of riding that line.
Watching your journey through Tool songs has been great, I have to say. You've had pretty much the same reactions to their songs as I have, and that's actually awesome - awe, contemplation, and perhaps the need to let it turn around in your head for a few hours. Little things about humanity, you know? :) And seriously, I'm so glad you got good earphones. Not just for your other videos, but also because Tool loves putting nuances and subtle touches in their music, and you can only really catch them with earphones. Others have already pointed out what kind of era of their music each album kind of symbolizes, so I won't repeat that. I will say that apart from maybe hearing Deftones' song Passenger, where Maynard sings backup, you're good to hear Third Eye now. It's a song you put on, kick back, close your eyes, and let the music paint tapestries in your imagination with. Three other song recommendations for you, to see if you dig the bands' music: - VAST: Here - Qwel: The New Wine - Filter: Jurassitol
Loved wtf😆always the reaction for a Tool song especially this one! For yourself... listen to their albums in entirety start to finish one day. And you need to see them live it's a must✌keep up the good work.
I take this song to mean that there are things that burden us and weigh us down. Things that we hold onto even things we’ve done ourselves. Shameful things. Things we aren’t proud of. Things we need to let go of in order to move forward. Learning to forgive others is hard sometimes but learning to forgive ourselves is even harder. Once you can forgive yourself you can evolve.
Maynard literally read the lyrics from a book on horoscopes. It's all from the capricorn section. It's dedicated to their guitar player, Adam Jones, he's a capricorn. Maynard thought it suited him, and arranged the excerpts lyrically.
I know I'm one of the people who was suggesting this one forever! I'm stoked you listened to it, it's always been one of my favorites. You wanna hear another song where Maynard is absolutely brutal, check out Jerk Off from Opiate. It's actually a live recording which makes it even better hearing how gnarly Maynard can actually be. Keep it up dude you're the best react channel on here
Tool songs have a different meaning and feeling every time you listen to them. I think you could study tool lyrics for years and never fully understand them lol
Maynard and tool have been on a journey through the shadow....or, the spirit world, if you like that term better. They have learned the secrets to the fibinatchi sequence, 46 and 2, the eye of Saturn, ascension, the serpents of light and so much more. The music and lyrics are like a audio adaptation of their journey. Their music can be appreciated on every lvl, but the underlying message woven through all their music is very very spiritual and meant to be seen through the 3rd eye. This would take at least an hour of writing to explain the short version, and that would be cruel butchering of the thesis. Only adepts of the highest rank of the opened 3rd eye (white and red) would understand.
@@shadowninjarider374 lol. He doesnt believe in the third eye and all that bullshit. He simply reads and follows Jungs teachings. He follows some of the Gnostic teachings and shit, but thats about it.
@@OrphanCrippler1 I mean.....really....how can someone really say they listen to any of Maynard's creations and say that he doesn't believe in the 3rd eye. Yes, he has read Jung, yes he has read the gnostic....but c'mon brah. Maynard has been into all the deep shit. Deep ass shit like you can't even imagine. As a long time mucisian and lyricist myself, I tell you to go deeper, then go DEEPER, then go plus ultra DEEPER, then.....go deeper still. Dont stop till you push the envelope and watch it bend. Then you gotta spiral out till you become a perfect circle. Then once your tool becones a Pucifer, you push it till it becomes a Tool again. You can't do this completely sober, so do some H and try to make it through the shadow and come out 46+2. If you fail to understand....just stop listening to Tool altogether and switch to....IDK....justin beeber or whatever.....dam kids these days....

"The only band that comes close, is Pink Floyd". THIS is what I tell people, they are literally heavy metal Pink Floyd.
Nec Ro Tool is heavy as fuck and they’re absolutely a progressive band in the caliber of Pink Floyd.

TOOL will always be 🔥#1🔥
Unquestionably the best band ever! I , like many others, have been there for 25 years. Your reactions are fantastic! Welcome to the club.
I heard stinkfist in '96 on the radio, and my fate was altered on that day.
"Tool just always impresses me"... right on man, been listening to them since the mid 90s in high school... still listening to them today... nothing like them, they are an experience of their own.
Tool was born fron Pink floyd. The two best bands ever
There is no favorite Tool song....it's impossible to decide which is best. My top 5 list would change depending on which day you ask. They're just that good.
I recently revisited Right in Two and I think that's cracked the top of my list, such a well composed song
Exactly right. The favourite TOOL songs vary according to where you are in life's journey and your personal circumstances, challenges or joys.
Rex you said it perfectly. Vicarious and Parabol/Parabola ALWAYS speak to me, but so many other songs just grab me at random times.
Those two definitely and I'd add Lateralus and Jambi and Pushit...and..lol... you see how hard it is even do a top 5 list!
My #1: Schism, no doubt about it.
My #2: forget it, I won't even try to limit that list.
Tool gets into your skin, you feel it in your soul and you will never be already the same.
I love how captivated you are by Tool. They were a big part of my teens and I still love them. 🌞

Was jamming this song to my HUMVEE crew on our first push into Iraq from Kuwait.......it was an interesting night.

You are BY FAR my favorite reaction youtuber! You have a genuine love for good music.
I love your face throughout the entire song...it's that tool "concentrated smiling satisfied wtf" look that I've had thousands of times! You are awesome and just the correct person to do tool reaction videos
That scream+the riffs. Fuck me. Goosebumps each and every time.
Grudge may be the best opening song on any album. Just sets the tone and gets you amped for what’s coming. And if you want chaos, you gotta do Third Eye. That song is a journey like no other.

Welcome to the spiral…
Reminds of the downward spiral, another great album and musician
Tool and Pink Floyd are absolutely kindred spirits. Awesome reaction as always man.
Led Zeppelin should be on your list friend.
DedHedJosh I can appreciate that.
Nobody knows what this song is about... it's the final frontier for tool fans to decipher

“TOOL IS JUST DIFFERENT!!!” Best anyone’s ever put it!!’

I'm not certain, but my take on many of Tools songs is for them to be an individual introspective experience that you draw your own meaning from.

I was 12 years old when this first hit my eardrums, I've never looked back since!
One of the best feelings in the world is hearing your 8yo son say: "dad can we listen to TOOL again?" Yes son. Yes we can.
Tool is on another level. You need to seem live. Changed my life back in ‘98. Props
I was stoked for 2020. hopefully 2021 can have shows. hate to think we just possibly got the last tool album.
Tool are truly unique. I have been listening to Metallica from the last few days and noticed that although they are undoubtedly good and talented, there is some sort of repetition in their songs (riffage, drumming, etc.). Tool are their own genre. Hope their new album drops soon!
Indeed bro. Just at a different level.
Tool - Third Eye (Salival Version)
Tool is gonna stay your favorite band. Trust me.
ya, until he discovers Opeth.
@@_BLACKSTAR_
Haha...

Great song
Pusifer is like them. Think it's more Maynards style
Its Billys band, not MJK's. Just sayin.
That wouldn't be the first APC song I'd recommend a new listener. Great song tho, just not a good entry point.

Mushrooms or acid?
This one happens to be my favorite of theirs. To me, the lyrics are about the futility of anger and its destructive results, whether it be on the scale of an individual or entire nations. That scream just before the outtro always struck me as the primal way to "let it go."
"FLAWLESS VICTORY!!" Absolutely loved that. Hearing them open with that live was nothing shy of amazing! Great reaction/review!!

And seriously, I'm so glad you got good earphones.
Three other song recommendations for you, to see if you dig the bands' music:
- VAST: Here
- Qwel: The New Wine
- Filter: Jurassitol
You still have Stinkfist by Tool though
He did Stinkfist already, but the video was only up for a couple of hours. Don't know why he took it down.
