      I think 1/3 of 10,000 sounded like equal parts stagnation and regression. Another 1/3 was self-indulgent. While, the final 1/3 is genuinely “different”, if not a natural-sounding progression from what preceded it with Lateralus. However, overall, I think the new album from TOOL sounds like a band trying to “sound like TOOL.”

      Be prepared - Tool will latch on and change you from the inside out. I've been a fan since the beginning.... Just be careful not to take too much of other people interpretations... let it speak to YOU. Its all excellent, but the early stuff had more angst / fight the machine of society / religion messages... that slowly evolved into more self introspection and betterment (with some good f-the system bits here and there)... If you really want to go on a journey - listen to "The Patient".... Shoot - just binge all of Lateralus... Some high points (from all albums) Sober, The Pot, The Patient, Jimmy, 46&2, H, Schism, Pneuma, 7empest..

I know this because it's 2020 and anyone with any common sense whatsoever knows that Astrology is and always has been complete and utter bullshit.

    "Turn these leaden grudges into gold" is a reference to alchemy, which was, theoretically, a process of turning lead into gold, which was really just a metaphor for spiritual growth/transcendence.

  • @fixxxt
    @fixxxt 4 года назад +10

    As a long-time Tool fan, I am hard pressed to find a "bad" song in their catalogue. There is something to like in every song, but this, this song, is a top tier song. As anyone familiar with Tool knows, lyrics are sometimes intentionally vague leaving them open to interpretation. I've been listening to this song regularly since it came out in 2001. Jamal, I think you hit it when you were talking about letting the grudge go. The part in the song where Maynard sings
    "Give away the stone
    Let the oceans take and transmutate this cold and fated anchor
    Give away the stone
    Let the waters kiss and transmutate these leaden grudges into gold," is such a cool collection of lyrics. I think when he sings about the oceans, he means being vulnerable and being in touch with emotion, letting the tears flow (ocean). Then he says transmutate, which is a nod to alchemy (the science of turning lead into gold). So basically the way to let go of the grudge is to not fear your emotions, don't let your pride stand in the way of healing, cry it out and transmutate these leaden grudges into gold.
    They always make you think, which is one reason this never gets old. I swear I appreciate each song differently each time I listen.
    I am so grateful to you, Jamal, for reacting to Tool. I love how you appreciate their art and attention to detail. This band is special, and you see that.
    Although there is so much more to say about this song, I'll spare you. Great reaction. Thank you.

      Aenima and Lateralus are companion albums in a way. And The Grudge (first song on Lateralus right after which came out after Aenima) perfectly shows and explains how, bridging the gap.
      Ill explain, made me appreciate and love both even more once i really realized this, hopefully itll do the same for you.
      Aenima is total pessimism. Burn it all, flush it all away, as a mentality. Angry album.
      But then Lateralus came out and it is all about letting go, and being zen and realizing theres more to the world and conciousness you can aspire yourself and your surroundings to.
      Its truly an amazing musical progression of a band those back to back (amazing) albums and how distinctly diff their messages and feel are. And how deliberate Tool made them that way.
      (And 10,000 Days which came 5 years later is all about his mother's 30 years dealing with paralysis then finally dying, and is sort of his emotional release all about all of it)

    Interesting that you mentioned Area 51. The theme on this tour focused on a lot of extraterrestrial imagery .One of the interludes on this album ,Faaip De Ooid,is a recording of a caller into paranormal radio host Art Bell’s show back in the 90’s trying to warn the listeners of an alien takeover. The broadcast gets cutoff by an unknown source while the caller is freaking out . He had claimed he used to work for Area 51 and the government was spying on his activities. Tool had originally wanted to use the interlude using Enochian chanting,but their sound engineer freaked out claiming aliens were stalking him. They changed it to this recording.

    When you are born Saturn is at a certain place in space, it takes Saturn approx 28 years to return to that exact position. It's a time of reflection ( see what I did there, also a great song ) Saturn ascending and then returning is a chance for you let go of the past and move on and evolve. I think.
    The choose one or ten has to do with kaballah and the tree of life. The first sphere of the tree being keter or " crown " and the tenth is yesod which is seen as a vehicle that allows movement. Perhaps moving beyond the grudge you were holding. Makes sense in the context of the song

      'Saturn' was also likely intended to reference the Tree of Life. Each sephira on the tree has an associated planet, and the one that is associated with Saturn is the 3rd sephira, Binah. It is generally thought to represent understanding or contemplation. I'm sure that the "comes back around" part is a reference to Saturn's astrological orbit, but I think the reason he mentions Saturn to begin with is probably due to its significance in the Kabbalah Tree of Life.

      Double meaning. Saturn is also the representative of the middle finger in palmistry. So, Saturn ascending is basically giving the finger to someone. You can choose the one (giving the finger) or the ten to embrace (or open all ten fingers to let it go). But, your take is correct for the second and third time he sings about Saturn.

    I used to be confused about the Saturn part too, but it's an astrology thing;
    "The Saturn Return is when the planet Saturn comes back to meet your natal Saturn. It takes about 29.5 years for this slow-mover to return to where it was when you were born. The Saturn return hits in the late 20s and its impact is felt into the early 30s.
    During a return, Saturn's energy can pull at you in an even more intense way than usual. It might ask you to know yourself in ways you haven't so far. It might ask you to set limits for yourself. It might ask you to accept a new heaviness, a new maturity, a new sense of responsibility."
    I'm not into astrology myself, but I appreciate the metaphor of a time/ challenge to grow. To cast off the weight of our 'grudges', to grow by letting go.

    Why I prefer this type of music.
    As people we all have a basic start point from which to grow. Different conditions, experiences, and biology play huge factors in who we become, but some things escape these boundaries and affect us all as human beings. What this music does is it allows you to step outside of yourself and reexamine yourself and the world around you without the bias of the conditions that made us who we are. It helps us to better understand how we are, why we are, what we are, and our greater roll. Even if this roll is meek it is no less important than any other. We are indeed all brothers and sisters who are much more alike than we are disparate.
    I think we would all do well to remember this from time to time.

    I think you’re as much a Tool fan as anybody, your ‘interpretations’ are as valid as any. Holding onto a grudge is a waste, holding on too long will change you. Dealing with a grudge in the right way is to let go, to drop that weight you’ve been carrying. Inflexible entrenchment vs foundational growth.
    The Saturn thing I think is from astrology, from a concept they call the Saturn return. Basically the same thing about holding onto grudges, letting negativity control you can change you
