My favourite song of all time and took that title the day it was released. I bought the cd and rushed home to listen to it. Nothing from the album Lateralus had been leaked. I had waited 5 years for new Tool. This opens the album. I hit play and I'm left open mouthed. As soon as it finished I hit repeat and did that 4 more times before getting to the 2nd track. I don't think this song will ever be replaced as my #1. I've listened to this song thousands of times and still occasionally hear new bits I had missed before (or forgotten from age!). My version of a masterpiece

As a bassist to another I wonder why you not even listened to it. I stared my Tool experience 20 yrs ago with exactly this song. It was like sitting in a Space Shuttle. I was just stunned until the CD spiraled out. The way they go completely different and strange without any disturbing. This tone they have is making all that weird changes bearable... and this living drum machine in the back. They are just awesome. They made a huge part of myself thinking as musician. You know what? All Tool music you had around all the time I had my first listen to this year. I only knew the song Sober. You missed a lot dude, sorry to say that. Happy to have you back on board.

Hey David, I went to the same thing with my first connection with Tool's music in 1992. (yep I'm old, but feeling young)
Undertow was great, nice songs, the harchness and agressive tone of the album blew me away, but I was not in love, just a perfect album for area.
It took then a long time, untill Schism was played in the mainstream that I was hooked. I've bought the album Lateralus and from then on the whole back catalogue.
Lateralus (album) for me is still there legacy. It was a different Tool comparing to Undertow, more of my music taste then, so I was swallowed in, going deep into the rabbit hole.
You're right about the prog-rock label, tool does it different, they make it grove, follow the impuls, the heart, but make it complex so it keeps interesting.
They are able to make the complex sounds like a simple pulse and that's what I miss in other prog-rock music, the heart, the emotion, the forward pulse is lacking.
I'm not into shredding, I find a single note merely more interesting when it's well placed than a bar of uncountable notes, but hey, that just me.
Love your reaction by the way.
Subscribed, I want to see you going in as well.

Dude undertow was literally just the beginning for them. After that they ascended to one of the greatest bands of all time. This album alone listened through as a whole is so good there are no words to describe it. Danny Carey on drums is top 3 all time.

The follow up to Undertow is “Aenima”. This was off the 3rd album “Lateralus”. Aenima & Lateralus in my opinion are their 2 best albums. But their 2006 album “10,000 Days” and 2019’s “Fear Inoculum” are both also masterful. I have a feeling the more you dive into Tool, the bigger fan you’ll become. Its all like this.

"Tool needs to confer with NASA for their songwriting" 😂😂 So funny yet so apt!!
Just when I start to wonder am I wrong for appreciating Tool as much as I do... I hear another person's first take on one of their songs and it reminds me of how I felt the first time I heard "The Grudge".

So apparently he tried to make it 29 seconds to correlate to Saturn's 29 year cycle. Most people say it's about 27. It also thrashed his voice and it was the end if recording. He doesn't do it live.
Aenima is the follow up to Undertow. A little more commercial (probably by necessity) but great as well. This is from the third album Lateralus.

That riff at 3:50? I live for it. Lesser bands would write a whole song around that riff. Tool? They smash you in the face with it, play with it for 30-40 seconds, and move on. It is one of my favourite moments in any song, ever. LIVE FOR IT.

I almost envy you, if you stopped listening to TOOL after undertow, you have so much music to listen for the first time, I hope you can keep your mind in one piece. Spiral out man

Hey brother, watching your 2nd video right now (of course the first one was Pneuma drum cam) and I just wanna say your content is great! It's original, it's full of your own emotions and thoughts not "acting" for the camera and what's most important - somebody reacting to Tool who can actually as much as count the time and hear the nuances... keep doing what you're doing!

Yeah! Keep em coming! Check out that Salival Live Version of the song Pushit; even though it's live, it is audio only. I requested it with the link many, many videos ago. 😉 However, I can repost the link again if needed. I know you are a busy man. Tool never disappoints, they only grow and evolve with each album. This album Lateralus is their best, in my opinion, but I absolutely love every album of theirs. Seen them many times in concert. Absolutely love them. ❤

The song is in 5/4 the entire time, although one can argue that the breakdown in the middle to 10/4 with subdivisions of 3 - 3 - 4, which is why at moments it sounds 4/4 or 7/4
