Damn. Probably the greatest opening track to any album ever… THE GRUDGE!!! I’ve listened to this track tens of thousands of times and the shit Maynard does with it gives me chills each and every single time. This song has a different layer when heard live. Saw them in Vegas a few months ago and Maynard sounded better than ever. He even hit the scream at the end. Unbelievable.
I've spent... two decades (geez) listening to and analysing Tool, but what i still don't understand is how they have such an impossibly high level of production while at the same time sounding under produced. It's just a rock band, it's just a singer, two guitars and drums and while there's effects and layers inserted it's really simple stuff, we're blown away by the complexity of the songs but it doesn't feel like it was scaled up in any way by the production. All i can ever say about it is "some very clever and conscious people worked on this", nobody added something unnecessary, nobody ruined the mix, it's beautiful in its simplicity.

@@rockstardeath8558 I think it's an analog tape machine starting up. Given what Danny Carey has said what the drum solo is laid over in Faaip de Oiad, it kind of bookends the album in a neat way. I remember being in Gothenburg, Sweden on holiday only to, on the last day of my stay, see that they would perform there the next day. I was disappointed because I had recently discovered them but said that, hey, I'll catch them next time. Then they took a 10-year hiatus. After that hiatus, they finally released a new album in late 2019 - only for Covid to hit the world before I could see them. HOW HARD CAN IT BE TO SEE THEM LIVE, GODDAMMIT!?!?! Someday I'll get to see them.
30yrs ago is when I first heard Tool and I was hooked. Was one of the only carib kids in school that was listening to Tool. Everyone one thought I was Nuts. Guess what They became one of thee best bands in the World we Call Earth.

As you were mentioning the drums early in the song....all I could was smirk......This is the beginning of TooL emerging as the GOAT! The entire Lateralus album needs to be heard....it is the quint essential TooL

Finally a reactor that understands if you read the Tool lyrics first you’ll have a greater appreciation of the song. After all we wouldn’t want her to have to listen to their songs for 30 years and never fully realize what the lyrics were, or what they meant, until this thing called RUclips came along and You get to be reawakened by watching reactors and having the lyrics and true meanings of the songs revealed to you. 7:48 he had been playing with the snare turned off until this verse when he flips it on. I agree it sounds so damn good. The snares are little metal chains on the bottom of the drum btw, in case you didn’t know already.
I got to see them live for the first time a couple months ago and OH MY GOD this was so good live! I've been loving the Tool rabbit hole you're going down, keep it up!
David Bottril the genius audio engineer behind this album ,after the release of Lateralus someone was asking him ,what does it takes to make a great album like this ? the answer was very simple " you take your time and you have great musicians " period !! Danny's also a great percussionist so tribal !!
The end scream was almost like 15-16 seconds long, which is really interesting how his vocals were able to hold up for that amount of time. And this is truly one of my favorite songs from him tbh
My number 1 band. Heard Sober back in the early ‘90s and have been hooked ever since. They can lift you up, punch you in the chest, and then set you back down. Close your eyes and enjoy the ride. 😎
It only gets better and never gets old. So much to love about Tool. Maynard's lyrics, his vocals, Danny's ability to make the drums not just keep the rhythm but become a focus of the music, Adam's textual guitar, Justin's bass no words can express. I'm 50 and Tool had been THE BAND for 29 of those years. The Grudge, for me, reminds me of one of my favorite Buddhist quotes..."Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else's; you are the one who gets burned."...Let go of negative energy and grudges or like a stone it will Dead you to the bottom. And as we know from Tool...."Shit adds up at the bottom."
I always interpreted "the scream" as representative of the pain and difficulty of letting go. It's necessary and worth it in the end, but painful during the process because of our resistance to letting things go. Fun fact: Maynard uses a lot of distortion when performing this live... he said if he always performed that scream and the song Ticks and Leeches the way he did in studio, he would destroy his singing voice while touring. Fair point haha. For further recommendations, two of their most popular songs, Stinkfist and Schism, are not only rock bangers, the lyrical metaphors are pretty incredible as well. Great reaction as always 👍
thank you for your heartfelt comments and analysis... I have no words to discribe howmuch tool touches me to the core... being not an 'average' person myself, I too have had my fair share of bias and judgemental dumbness.... keep it up!!! greetz from Belgium
I love watching reactors falling in love with Tool. It happens like 100% of the time. 🖤 You should check out Pushit, both studio and the live version. They did 2 totally different renditions of the same song, (both are captivating) An unrelated suggestion would be Radiohead, just as a contradiction from your heavier stuff, & since your a vocalist. Keep up the good work! I'm looking forward to seeing your channel grow!🖤
Tool Sober live (pro shot) remastered is an awesome video to watch to see how they were in their earlier days and gives you a good idea of his performance when he would be front and center as a standard singer would be.
Give away the stone the stone Let the ocean take and transmutate this cold and fated anchor Give away the stone Let the waters kiss and transmutate these leaden grudges into gold The metaphor of a grudge being a heavy burden; stone, lead and/or an anchor just weighing us down while FORGIVENESS is lush life-giving water and personifying these natural elements with verbs like "take" and "kiss" is an absolute master craft in lyrics. "Let the ocean take" exposes an optimistic truth that forgiveness is something that requires very little to no effort. To forgive is to GIVE IN to your inner most primal urges because we are naturally compassionate emotional beings. Holding a grudge is hard stressful work that yields NO reward. It's so poetic it makes me tear up.
That was THE BEST reaction to Maynard's TWENTY-FIVE SECOND scream I've seen yet. It's a monsters. You need to check out Aenema one of these days. That's a great example of Maynard just letting go with his grit and fury ...
That was a very good song. Even though I know this band for a long time, that's my first time listening to any of theirs songs. And I enjoyed it a lot. And thank you for reaction.
Your comment about where Maynard sits in the mix is spot on. The whole album is a masterpiece of mixing. Its what I hold all other albums to when it comes to heavier music.

Love watching new fans of Tool react to songs I've loved for many years; living vicariously, (pun intended), through them. Tool is more of an experience than a band; Spiral Out...
Fantastic reaction. Saw TOOL live in June. Just amazing.
They were just in Stockholm last week 😬 they are literally on the European leg of their tour right now, not too many shows left though…
I've seen Tool three times and each time this song blows me away.
30yrs ago is when I first heard Tool and I was hooked.
Was one of the only carib kids in school that was listening to Tool. Everyone one thought I was Nuts.
Guess what They became one of thee best bands in the World we Call Earth.
i was like....what is that number over the album art?....And then i realized it was your pulse. This has to be one of the coolest things added to a reaction to music vid. I have been following TooL since they first came out. Some of their music makes me cry because its just so good. Good stuff. Keep doing your thing.
Your eyebrows are so expressive they do all the reacting when you are lost in the song. Love watching your reactions to these legends
As you were mentioning the drums early in the song....all I could was smirk......This is the beginning of TooL emerging as the GOAT! The entire Lateralus album needs to be heard....it is the quint essential TooL
Seen Tool 3 times live and I'd see them a DOZEN TIMES MORE!!
Grudge is an awesome opening track that gets me all fired up! Lateralus album overall is just a masterpiece where I can listen just fall into a trance and get lost in it! I love these videos of people getting to experience what TOOL music is all about!
Your reactions are becoming my favorite on RUclips overall. Thank you for all the Tool reactions, too, because it's amazing to see someone discover something I've loved for 20 years. Spiral out.
Wow, thank you so much!
I really enjoy your reactions and your ability to go along on the journey and experience with us !!!
"Jesus Danny" LOL. I love it. I've seen Tool live about 5 or 6 times. I've stood in different places but standing right next to the sound mixing stage(where they hear and mix the sound) gave me massive eargasms. So good lol
first reactor i’ve seen to love that snare hit as much as me
Between the Bloodywood and Tool reactions you have such great music ahead of you to discover. Hope you enjoy the trip and great reaction as always. :)
Can't wait!
It’s been an amazing experience. Great reaction ☺️ Spiral Out
There must be the 5th member in Tool, a magician who throws his spells on listeners. When you hear them once, its over , you are done and cant live without Tool music.
Like your channel and the way you FEEL the music :)
Maynard is a lyrical genius…
Saw it live in New Orleans.. yep.. greatest concert I’ve ever been to.. amazing
I love the part when Danny adds the backbeat. one of my favorite Tool moments :)
This song is cosmic levels of badassery
I love watching reactors falling in love with Tool. It happens like 100% of the time. 🖤 You should check out Pushit, both studio and the live version. They did 2 totally different renditions of the same song, (both are captivating) An unrelated suggestion would be Radiohead, just as a contradiction from your heavier stuff, & since your a vocalist. Keep up the good work! I'm looking forward to seeing your channel grow!🖤
I just wanna say that I loved everything about this reaction and can't wait for more Tool on this channel
Glad you enjoyed! Thank you so much!
Tool Sober live (pro shot) remastered is an awesome video to watch to see how they were in their earlier days and gives you a good idea of his performance when he would be front and center as a standard singer would be.
We love your reactions; hope to see more Tool's one in the Future...
Give away the stone the stone
Let the ocean take and transmutate this cold and fated anchor
Give away the stone
Let the waters kiss and transmutate these leaden grudges into gold
The metaphor of a grudge being a heavy burden; stone, lead and/or an anchor just weighing us down while FORGIVENESS is lush life-giving water and personifying these natural elements with verbs like "take" and "kiss" is an absolute master craft in lyrics.
Loved watching you repeat Maynard singing. It's crazy how he can scream so long. Good reaction.
I understand what you are saying about the other side of Maynard's stile.
He uses an almost dream like conversational sound in parts of this song.
Great track, drums are amazing 🙌✨ love your channel
Great song and that scream! Justin definitely adds a new dimension to the band, great addition!
I saw them play this live in Manchester UK on Monday.
Dat room do! Phenomenal!
Just watched them live a few days ago in Manchester uk. Amazing! If you ever get the chance go see them sell your soul if you have to, go!
That was a very good song. Even though I know this band for a long time, that's my first time listening to any of theirs songs. And I enjoyed it a lot. And thank you for reaction.
Ahhh! The power of music to, like a wormhole, transport you back in time to re-experience memories in vivid ways.
Listen to the humbling river from puscifer if you love Maynard. He sounds great in that song
Your comment about where Maynard sits in the mix is spot on. The whole album is a masterpiece of mixing. Its what I hold all other albums to when it comes to heavier music.
That's Tool, always pulling at emotions, I saw it in your face. 🤘
this is my favorite song on my favorite album by my favorite band ❤
You are wise beyond your years, love watching your insightful commentary!!!! Here's some TOOL suggestions fwiw: "Sober", "H", "Stinkfist", "Aenima", "Ticks & Leeches", "Invincible", "7empest", "Prison Sex", "Vicarious".
Yayyyyy, love this track for this very reason. :D
Got to see them play this gem live last week, it was mindblowing 🤘
yes, tool is magic
Saw them perform this track....Maynards scream at the end....live.....spiritual experience
This song..👌 was my best song of all time for a decade! Tx for the react 🤟
It's been cool to see your Tool journey so far. I'm sure you've got alot of suggestions coming up but yo, you have to check out A Perfect Circle "Passive". Blessings
I went to the Dallas concert back in January & that scream was so load live. The crowd went nuts
OMG your dog gives me cute aggression. Loved your take on holding grudges and the damage it causes. Sounded like earned wisdom. Unforgiveness in general is a self-administered poison that goes down easy with a spoonful of anger. We are strange, sometimes irrational things.
I saw them play in Melbourne just after that album came out. They opened with this song and I was waiting for it. He went for it and hit that scream! What a band! Unbelievable!
