Maybe you're not the most qualified to analyze drumming, but I can assure you that yours is the best reaction to this treasure of a video that I've seen (and I've watched TONS of them!), both in terms of your attitude and ability to break down a few of the patterns that Danny was playing. You deserve WAY more views than these, that's for sure.
On the crazy Tom part in the middle he is adding strokes to the existing pattern every time it goes back to 1. Ya boy is incredible. Who else can write this? There’s a few that can play it, but who else can CREATE it?
One thing that blows my mind about the song, performance aside, is that he had to create the entire drum arrangement in the first place. He's not just memorizing and replaying a piece that someone else had the creative genius to come up with. He is the genius behind it from start to finish! Absolutely masterful!
Honestly Danny Carey breaks the rating scale in that yes he may be able to add more embellishments or arrange it differently so that technically it may have a more by the book structure but he didn't. He played it the way he did because that's the way he wanted it to sound. He's not playing at the max of his capabilities he playing the song the way it needs to played so that it has the desired effect. Tools music is planned to perfection and anything that do that seems less than perfect is actually perfect because it was purposeful and deliberate being done to create a specific energy, very much like casting a spell (metaphorically of course). Every little nuance has a purpose and can't be done any better because it can't be done any other way. To do it differently would change the recipe for the spell and it wouldn't work.

Great reaction video. I watched the Danny Carey video before and was absolutely mesmerized. Your right. This guy is not human. He's like....hold my beer...I got this. So much talent. Amazing!!!
When you're talking about him doing separate patterns with each arm during the breakdown session, do remember that he's also got at least a 3rd pattern going, as he's got the high hat going with metronome regularity. Then there's the bass drum too... lol. Danny Carey is sometimes known as "The Octopus", and I am sure you can understand why... lol
This Pneuma video is really important i feel. Your seeing someone who has perfected their Art over a lifetime hit their peak performance at a level far beyond most peoples comprehension. For me the energy summoned here by Danny's dynamic hits adding extra hits is unbelievable and Danny makes it look like a walk in the Park. Thanks for uploading this it's a great reaction and the more Tool online the better as far as i'm concerned. Hopefully they will release a tour DVD that's properly filmed some day.
One of the better reviews of the Pneuma drum cam video. I really enjoyed how your head exploded at 8:48. Danny does that to all of us. All of TOOL’s songs change time signatures multiple times throughout. A few change dozens of times.
Totally digging the reaction david. Thank you for your insights. Danny is just on his own level with drumming. It always makes me happy to see him playing and watched the original video right there countless times because of it.
Watching musicians try to count Dannys time is always so funny. He plays unrestricted beyond time. His hi hat is where it is so he never has to cross his arms, so obviously brilliant.
New subscriber here, and I gotta say you’ve gotta be my new favorite reaction channel. In the short time I’ve watched your stuff, I’ve learned a number of new things from your in-depth analysis, which rarely happens with reaction vids. Excellent job!
great reaction! in regards to the hihat placement, if i recall correctly, its because his kit was so big, that he experimented with it as a way to avoid crossing hands, and he liked it so much he kept it.
Dude. This is the best Pneuma reaction out there! So much of the depth of this song goes over the heads of other channels - like they don't even have the musical vocabulary to describe what they're hearing. Really admired your deep dive into his kit, the time signature, and the patterns on each hand. I've been obsessed with this song since it came out, and you really did it justice. Awesome video.
Bro.. watching your level of frustration grow as you try to figure out whats happening here is the highlight of my drunken night.. thanks for making this so entertaining!!
David this is my first trip to your channel sir and you are in for a treat. Danny Cary is a master of his craft. That is a fact! You are in a band so I think you will get off on this video. We'll see!!!! Danny had a birthday recently, he is 63 years old. He has played the drums for around 50 of those years. I submit to you that the first part of this fine video is just Danny warming up. Later in this video he busts loose! My favorite part is coming up. At 21:44 or so! I think he is a one-man drum line! Very special.........
Thank you! I've watched several reaction videos to this, and I believe you're the first to explicitly freak out over the part that starts around 17:40. That stretch where Danny is doing the two totally distinct patterns with each hand, while slowly building on each, is probably the most "no way!" thing I've ever seen a drummer do. I know all about muscle memory and limb independence, but this is just a whole other level.
David - Nice take. Subscribed. Props for using both syllables, btw. I like the 9.5 because it allows for finding one instance of a "better" performance and upgrading to a 9.75. An old flame once said she had never met a David she didn't like. So far, she's been right. It's getting a little weird because at my age that's a lot of Davids. Keep smiling.
That was physically amazing coordination to play different time with each hand and kick drum at once. I have no idea how he does it. A physically gifted drummer without question.
I know very little about drumming, other than just taking a passing interest as a music fan. But, I agree with all you said there. He is super technical, but not in a way that doesn't fit the song. He's not being extravagant, just for the sake of it. The rest of the band are great, but Danny takes them to a completely different level to your average band.
The super-power of Danny. His massive chops hit his kit as if dooming it to death - while also playing the drums like the most delicate instrument in honouring the composition with all the musicality in existence.
He did in fact say it was technically 33/16, But he always wears a basketball jersey of whatever area he is in. This show was in Boston. Hence the Celtics Bird jersey.
@@prophecygg5826 just like everything else with tool it's that and something else. Yes, he always b ball jerseys. Yes, they were in Boston, but also Yes, they chose the performance of him wearing the bird jersey for the live drum version of pneuma. Hence, 33. Lol
I've seen a ton of reactions of this video and have been waiting for SOMEONE to mention the dynamics used on the rim shots. It was easily overlooked but sooo effective for the moment. For that alone, I smashed the subscribe.
I have listened to so many "reaction" videos that are contrived. Yours was not. You seemed to genuinely react to this video which is the way to do it. I can't get enough of this song because it works at so many levels. It's complex, it's meaningful, and it is just masterful. I really enjoyed your explanation. Cheers!
Yes, Danny Carey is amazing drummer. I loved your reaction to this video and gave it an honest score. I as well were blown away by his ability behind a drum kit...WOW. But like many others have said, I too have watched so many reactions to the Pneuma video. And I say you have my thumbs up on your reaction. Great job David.
8:50 ish lol I did some digging and repeated attempts of counting to "try" and confirm this haha This is just for the main riff/verses and now my brain hurts lmao trying to solve this song's time signatures is akin to trying to solve the Diophantine Equation 🤣 Source: Reddit According to Adam, the song's time signature is 33/16. It can also be split(for easier counting maybe?) in two different ways 14/8 - 19/8 or 14/8 - 14/8 - 5/8 How to count it out(RUclips Sourced) 1 - 2 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 1 - 2 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 1 - 2 1 - 2 - 3
What I like this so much is that you can see how Adam Jones and Justin Chancellor are interactin.. Also Maynard. But for example at 4:57 (and 7:16) you can see how Adam is turning to look at Danny waiting for his next cue which is delivered at 7:19 where you can see Danny nodding to Adam when he hits the .. "drum" (I have no idea what these things are called). :) And you can see Justin getting ready at 7:41 just right of Dannys head.. This video is so good.

Great reaction video. I watched the Danny Carey video before and was absolutely mesmerized. Your right. This guy is not human. He's like....hold my beer...I got this. So much talent. Amazing!!!
Great reaction video bro...👍...I love watching these TOOL reaction videos...it's my therapy
One of the very best and accurate reviews of Pneuma by Tool, i've seen here on youtube.
When you're talking about him doing separate patterns with each arm during the breakdown session, do remember that he's also got at least a 3rd pattern going, as he's got the high hat going with metronome regularity. Then there's the bass drum too... lol. Danny Carey is sometimes known as "The Octopus", and I am sure you can understand why... lol
Nice David. The drumsticks in Danny's hands look like Hummingbird wings. ✌
Nicely done! I was surprised you didn't talk more on how he played his high hat. Looking forward to checking out another reaction
It was everything i hoped for lol, you are a music theory madman!
React to more TOOL! Danny goes insane on tracks like The Grudge and Ticks and Leeches. (And their bassist Justin too ofc.)
Artists of the highest degree.
Watching musicians try to count Dannys time is always so funny. He plays unrestricted beyond time. His hi hat is where it is so he never has to cross his arms, so obviously brilliant.
That high pitch "roto-tom" you mention is actually a Korg Wavedrum, a great electronic pad.
The roto-tom is next to the wave, to the left
He also uses roto toms
New subscriber here, and I gotta say you’ve gotta be my new favorite reaction channel. In the short time I’ve watched your stuff, I’ve learned a number of new things from your in-depth analysis, which rarely happens with reaction vids. Excellent job!
I've watched a dozen reactions, and you are the FIRST to mention the volume of the hits. Well done!
David, the look on your face is that of astonishment. And enjoyment... Great reaction.
My favourite album from the last year
great reaction! in regards to the hihat placement, if i recall correctly, its because his kit was so big, that he experimented with it as a way to avoid crossing hands, and he liked it so much he kept it.
Absolutely love that you called out how ridiculous the fills are. Nice work!
Great attempt to cover sir... REALLY enjoyed this... Ty vm 💯 #WWG1
Bro.. watching your level of frustration grow as you try to figure out whats happening here is the highlight of my drunken night.. thanks for making this so entertaining!!
FEELIN' YOU Patrick!!! Enjoy the show, enjoy the night.
Finally someone who appreciate dynamics in music!! I'm curious to listen to your band.
Great reaction!
Thanks you for this great video!😃
David - Nice take. Subscribed. Props for using both syllables, btw. I like the 9.5 because it allows for finding one instance of a "better" performance and upgrading to a 9.75. An old flame once said she had never met a David she didn't like. So far, she's been right. It's getting a little weird because at my age that's a lot of Davids. Keep smiling.
That was physically amazing coordination to play different time with each hand and kick drum at once. I have no idea how he does it. A physically gifted drummer without question.
And his drum set-up mean's his arm's never cross over.. jus bad ass!
I've watched the original video a bunch of times and never noticed that before.
Really enjoyed your humble, erudite analysis. Your honest bewilderment and wowed reaction were refreshing. Very entertaining. Thank you.
It was a 10.
FEELIN' YOU Michael!!! Glad you enjoyed the show.
You nailed it with the comment "He's really relaxed"..Its key!!..Cheers bruv!!
DANNY CAREY…A TRUE MASTER…
So beautiful, TOOL makes me cry so often. Thank you TOOL. ❤️
I know very little about drumming, other than just taking a passing interest as a music fan. But, I agree with all you said there. He is super technical, but not in a way that doesn't fit the song. He's not being extravagant, just for the sake of it. The rest of the band are great, but Danny takes them to a completely different level to your average band.
ruclips.net/video/hxsld16TjSU/видео.html
Some nice drumming in this one too
The super-power of Danny. His massive chops hit his kit as if dooming it to death - while also playing the drums like the most delicate instrument in honouring the composition with all the musicality in existence.
Wait till you listen to Third Eye! Danny’s dynamics and complex arrangements really shine on that piece!
It's known as 33/16, hence his Carey version of a Larry Bird #33 Basketball Tee
He did in fact say it was technically 33/16, But he always wears a basketball jersey of whatever area he is in. This show was in Boston. Hence the Celtics Bird jersey.
@@prophecygg5826 just like everything else with tool it's that and something else. Yes, he always b ball jerseys. Yes, they were in Boston, but also Yes, they chose the performance of him wearing the bird jersey for the live drum version of pneuma. Hence, 33. Lol
Real good review and true to yourself, few mention the dynamics.....Danny plays jazz too! ✌️
best review ive seen of this performance yet. thanks.
I think you can call this perfection. Danny Carey - one of the best drummers in the world :)
I've seen a ton of reactions of this video and have been waiting for SOMEONE to mention the dynamics used on the rim shots. It was easily overlooked but sooo effective for the moment. For that alone, I smashed the subscribe.
Great reaction man, I could see your mind being blown. Checkout his work in Descending. No drum video but the song is phenomenal
😂 I watched you and drumeo break down this song and realized that I just like drums… I have no idea what percussion is. ❤Well done
The first time I watched this vid it blew my mind. Hearing it discussed in such detail blew my mind again
Excellent reaction Bother! Great job 👍
Danny Carey is 6’5”. He can reach everywhere
Great reaction to a amazing drum performance..the best❤👍
I have listened to so many "reaction" videos that are contrived. Yours was not. You seemed to genuinely react to this video which is the way to do it. I can't get enough of this song because it works at so many levels. It's complex, it's meaningful, and it is just masterful. I really enjoyed your explanation. Cheers!
FEELIN' YOU James!!! Glad you enjoyed it, more great stuff to come.
FEELIN' YOU Scorpion!!!
You see smile in Danny face in the end outro, he 😊😁
8:50 ish lol I did some digging and repeated attempts of counting to "try" and confirm this haha
This is just for the main riff/verses and now my brain hurts lmao trying to solve this song's time signatures is akin to trying to solve the Diophantine Equation 🤣
Source: Reddit
According to Adam, the song's time signature is 33/16.
It can also be split(for easier counting maybe?) in two different ways
14/8 - 19/8 or
14/8 - 14/8 - 5/8
How to count it out(RUclips Sourced)
1 - 2
1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6
1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6
1 - 2
1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6
1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6
1 - 2
1 - 2 - 3
Here again watching this because:
1) Such an great song.
2) Such an great video.
3) Such an great reaction
What I like this so much is that you can see how Adam Jones and Justin Chancellor are interactin.. Also Maynard.
But for example at 4:57 (and 7:16) you can see how Adam is turning to look at Danny waiting for his next cue which is delivered at 7:19 where you can see Danny nodding to Adam when he hits the .. "drum" (I have no idea what these things are called). :)
And you can see Justin getting ready at 7:41 just right of Dannys head..
This video is so good.
FEELIN' YOU Yuki!!!
@@THEDavidHeretic Just noticed the setlist that is attached to the coputer cabin next to Danny:

@@EiriUesugiKun Not one song from Undertow...*sniff*....gonna go cry now...
Did you see the.... yeah, you couldn't miss it.
great video to remind yourself NEVER COUNT METER WITH DANNY CAREY. Each limb exists in its own time zone.
Dude.
It's a 10...🤟
Gotta say, I've watched most of these Danny reaction vids.
And I absolutely loved yours Dave..
I'm going to subscribe straight away.
You seemed genuinely blown away. And rightly so.
I'm a drummer 51 years old ,started when I was 13/14 and I know that Danny Carey is one of the greatest of all time..
It's the timing...there's timing and there is Danny..
It's perfect to me.
I wouldn't even attempt to do what he's doing.
I just sit back in awe and smile..
And I kinda did with your reaction pal..
I think what I like is that a lot of reactions are kinda great but not rock/metal fans always.
And you are and understand the technical side..
So yeah great reaction my friend, really made me smile...😁🤟🤟🤟
FEELIN' YOU Antony!!! Glad you enjoyed the show, more great stuff to come.
