I think Twitch is on the verge of actually making profits. The revenue split changes for streamers will make a small diff, the ad incentives really have converted loads of streamers to playing ads from not playing them at all, this will make a bigger difference. I never played ads, from about September last year I have been. I felt like the ads were inevitable and also that potential split changes could happen for streamers and so chose to put them on at 3mins per hour. It hasn’t hurt my viewership, that is still trickling up, it’s increased my sub conversion because the ads remind people to use their prime rather than leave it sitting unused. I don’t push “subscribe to avoid ads” but you see little clusters of primes happening on an ad break. These were just sitting unused before I played the ads. They’ve just let go a load of the staff which does worry me, but will help in terms of overheads and future profits. Just based on the monthly ad revenue per 1000 views on my channel it feels like they are doing a better job at getting quality advertising in place. They are rolling out Picture in Picture for pre-roll ads. As a streamer on the platform I am concerned for the first time about Twitch and the mid to long term because I believe they are taking creators for granted. However on the flip side I think they will be reporting much more positive results in the short term which may be a shot in the arm for Twitch. Cut to 2024/5 when Twitch is sold on as a profitable business…
I'm not even a content creator and I still can't get enough DN. His advice goes much further than just being streaming advice; it's life and business advice.
I always say if someone is telling you how to do something as their job, they have no clue how to actually do it. They have no clue how to actually make that vertical work. The exception is devin. The Sheer volume of information he is able to infer without being privy to that information is mind-blowing. But then consider he also has access to tons of data. Legend.
Im more interested to see if IVS could be used by broadcasters who own their own website/domain to be a "one channel twitch" and use the platform without the overhead. There are enough payment options to self support, you would keep your chat moderated, and advertisers can get a better 1:1 engagement with a specific audience. There is no way you anyone can go "we'll just be twitch without twitch" but if the only channel is yours...
I think this is a cool concept that could be useful for an org that runs their own events but probably infeasible for one creator. The amount of engineering and maintenance alone would be way more effort than running a standard stream setup & it will be very hard to court advertisers' attentions with only the viewership of a single streamer.
So it basically confirms my concerns. I love how much of a disruption effect Kick is having on Twitch, but it feels like they are not addressing any of the issues they will have long-term. - copyright violations - the larger they become, the more likely they will attract DMCA takedowns, possibly huge legal battles - content moderation - not removing the worst people from the platform will create a magnet for scandals and limit future growth, bring the bad kind of people, repel the good kind that could be used to show the platform is good for serious advertisers. - no sustainability - overly generous revenue split, very expensive infrastructure costs. Maybe they can pay for it now, but what about when the traffic increases by 5x? 10x? 20x? 50x? How much more gambling revenue can the platform bring to stake? Will it be worth it? My naive mind hopes it doesn't, but then Kick has a big problem. Business-wise, why would they be a "charity" to create a place for streamers?
Kick is kinda like Michael Scott Paper Company from The Office. Getting customers initially by undercutting Dunder Mifflin (offering ridiculously high creator splits), only to start having issues with paying for things as their costs go up and it no longer becomes sustainable (growth of the Michael Scott Paper Company in The Office version of the metaphor, and MoviePass for a more real life example). And then the realization hits about why platforms like Twitch and RUclips can't offer those type of creator splits
If Kick found the answer to discoverability that's eluded Twitch it would be the deal breaker to switch for a lot of small streamers. It's very hard to get viewers if you're not part of the Austin or LA collective and Twitch just doesn't care about the small content creators.
You have to drive your own discoverability. Start making RUclips videos, grow an audience and drive them to you stream. Twitch has no incentive to drive viewers to streamers starting out, just like a stand up comedian starting out doesn’t get to do stadium tours. You have to graft the growth yourself. The discoverability criticism of Twitch always seems strange to me. It’s not a search engine. If you want to watch CSGO it shows you who’s on right now and ranks them via who people are watching. As a viewer that system works fine, as a newer steamer it’s hard, but you have to disrupt that yourself by driving eyes to your channel. That’s just the way it is. If you start on YT just streaming with no video content you face the same barrier. From someone not in Austin or LA who has never been to a Twitch con etc and started with YT videos and done pretty ok.
Nobodies gonna find a 20 viewer streamer both on kick and twitch multistreaming and take affiliate from them, being on the top of a category on kick will help with exposure, a risk worth taking while average 10-20 viewers as a small streamer.
As always 34 min mark there, even if I don't comment (for example listening while driving) I'm still there. I love your takes even if I don't care about streamers or streaming simply because of your informations about businesses. Thank you for your long videos as they are extremaly informative. Thank you for still doing it for this many years now.
I think a huge thing that Kick has going for it is that Train and the team at Kick, more likely than not (and certainly 99% more likely than Twitch would), will actually watch this video and meet about it and try to take it as constructive feedback to improve. I’ll cross my fingers for them because I do like the idea.
Great video! I'd love to listen to you and Train in a podcast-type setting just pontificate on the future of Kick and have Train share his vision(s) in real time. It's definitely a contender and the mere fact that the platform is beating to it's own drum backed by insane wealth built upon via-gambling is very very interesting. On one hand we have a website backed by ads and ran by suits, whereas the other website is backed by gambling money and gamers (gamblers) - super interesting contrast.
Long discussion below... Ill be giving my two cents for each controversy - Streaming "insane things": Some of these crazy things broadcasted on kick arent necessarily law breaking since we've seen similar things on Twitch and face no repercussions. Biggest one being adin showing porn, well twitch has shown their hypocrisy thanks to the twitch awards being sponsored by an onlyfans clone. So the bad rep it has is only seen bad by twitch users but not other big orgs mainly in sports like the UFC or NFL has stake ads and sponsors. So kick users would be fine if the only ads shown on their stream were to be sports ads or even sports drinks like gatorade or prime -Arkham Asylum streamers I believe in redemption and am not pro canceling anyone if they can show improvement no matter how severe the situation might be or how opposing their view might come off. If it were something like an unpopular opinion of a topic or an honest mistake of hurting someone, they need a second chance. And also if it meant those ex twitchers are now on Kick, it would actually challenge twitch even more where restraint those ex streamers had are now broken free and no longer opressed Thats all
There is a future for streaming because streaming is essentially broadcasting. Broadcasting has been popular since the invention of the radio waves. But whether streaming will ever be profitable to most people, I'm pretty sure it'll be very unlikely for broadcasting in general to be a huge money game. Times can definitely change, especially as we get into a world economy that is increasingly integrating automation and A.I. where we just don't know what will people interested in watching, what they purchase, etc.
the network infrastructure is a huge factor for me. Twitch has amazons web services, FB gaming has its meta cloud services, YT has googles servers, yet Kick is using Amazons service to run their website.
34 minutes in; I’ve seen you before but never really seen a stream or video. Just listened to the four horseman podcast. Thanks for the work in the scene!
Stake is in F1 and in countries that banned gamba ads, they run Kick on the cars, plus the fact that it's basically a self service Stake ad where YOU come to lol. We already know gambling ad ratio is insane/horrifying. Eventually they're going to have to approach Microsoft to partner for servers and a joint development of video delivery, in the sense that if Kick dies Microsoft still gains some sorta backend development. Even then, it's still insanely expensive and the worst part is you can just openly stream on it. I would have set it up as closed and that you have to get voted in by trusted creators. (I know that could go horribly wrong). I don't see how Kick, even if successful, won't be exactly like Twitch unless it does something drastically different for discovery. Twitch converts tried complaining about RUclips streaming, but if you stream good content your videos and streams will show up in front of people likely to watch it. We don't need a one trick Twitch clone, especially one that's likely to wind up in a Friendlyjodries vide 😂
34:50 Still here, still learning, so appreciative of your knowledge and insight, and so glad a friend told me about you and about this video specifically! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
One thing I think you started to touch on at the end was Stake using Kick as the opening to their funnel. Could extend to using Kick as shell advertising to get around gambling advertising restrictions, potentially like we've seen with the F1 sponsorship
34:50 Patreon squad here. Kick has been fascinating to watch, and ultimately yeah I don't think it will survive as is. I wonder if they'll eventually go all in on the Stake name too.
Hi Devin, twitch updated the TOS "11. Simulcasting" does this mean even streamers who are *not* affiliated are now not allowed to stream to youtube and twitch at the same time? Thank you.
thank you devin! i watched the whole thing, very informative. yes, i also agree >90% chance that kick is not going to work out and for small creators, multi-streaming is the way to go keep it up devin~
Watched the entire video. Great break down. Something that I often highlight to people obsessed with the Kick sub split is to look at how many of your subs are Twitch Prime subs that you will lose upon moving to Kick. Creators need to do that math before making the switch.
34:50 Very informative video, in fact, I finally cancelled my sub to you on twitch because of this video and will be financially supporting you on patreon from now on
Thanks as usual for all the value content! You heavily implied it but didn't specifically mention: If nothing else, this creates an awareness of how creator focussed a platform can be and more competition will potentially put pressure on twitch to improve things for creators if Kick manages to be around in the long run!
At 34mins, Interesting to always watch you videos to learn about what's happening in marketing. Does your patreon have videos on how to measure the impact/ROI of marketing?
Still here. Really appreciate the insight and I really should look into multi-streaming and finding a home for subs. You did an incredible job of explaining and helping me realize why. Great work. Thanks!
Maybe you’ve answered this question in other videos, but what is the most efficient (economically speaking) Patreon tier system? Like a base $3 tier has better return than a subscription on twitch with competitive creator revenue, but maybe you can decrease surplus if you push it to $4, $5, etc. without pricing too many customers out or having to outsource for more benefits. I think the economics of the content industry would be cool to learn about, especially because there probably aren’t many trained economists taking a look at it.
I recently had someone share this video to me as the Kick v Twitch situation escalates, and it's a great video that covers everything and feels like a comfortable podcast! Loved it!
Multistreaming's biggest issue is different platforms ban for different reasons. For example if you stream commentaries on the Civil War the confederate flag can get you banned on Twitch for "hate symbols" but not RUclips. Also when Facebook launched their Stars program the FAQ encouraged a CTA asking for Stars after something cool in a gaming stream, but on Twitch asking for bits is against TOS for Bits Usage. 🙂 Hopefully the other platforms don't get as stuffy as Twitch anytime soon. Seems like Twitch is always the problem as usual lol. 🙂
Watched the whole thing, thanks Devin. I feel like right now some streamers are on a "Kick high". I'm interested to see what things are like in 3 to 6 months. I've been following your multistreaming advice for a while so I immediately added Kick as another platform and I did notice a lot of bots.
Still here and still absorbing this valuable insight. Thankyou for sharing. This is perspective that could save someone a lot of emotional and financial pain down the road.
I still stream on twitch and kick, but won't leave the former unless they can hang jn there. But I think there should be some tos. It's like thr wold, wild west over there.
34minutes 15 seconds viewer here. Really enjoy these long form disucssion videos, I know its not whats "hot" with what tiktok has done to brains. So im glad some people keep making long and interesting content. Been watching since the dignitas days drinking your tiny cups of tea on stream
Thirty-four minutes & fifty seconds. I am enjoying and appreciate your input on Kick coming to the livestream space. This is something that has been on my mind.
Still here, very informative and really gives you an in depth view of the platforms in their pros and cons, personally I won't be streaming to kick, I started on fbg when covid hit and then I moved to twitch. Still a small content creator but consistency is always key to anything to success. Thank you for saying it how it is and not a biased opinionated perspective like some others do. Cut to the point, in depth explanations, and very factual information. Keep up the great content 👍
Excellent video! Just finished it - I agree with your conclusion. Another reason Kick will likely fail and why even sites like Twitch are losing viewership, is that watching livestreams is still a very niche activity. Maybe this is my bad take, but, there are tons of media to consume in the world, and watching someone livestream a game, or anything, is likely further down the list than watching a new show on Netflix, or a highly produced video on RUclips, or watching/rewatching a movie... perhaps I'm wrong.
"is that watching livestreams is still a very niche activity" Yeah that was what everyone thought until Twitch obtained the highest amount of watch time of any platform.
@@archvaldor RUclips has 1 billion hours per day watch hours for it's VODs. Netflix is around 200 million hours viewed per day. Twitch is at about 55 million hours watched per day. This is why I said watching livestreams is still a niche activity. It is up there, but there are things people watch in greater quantity.
3450 club represent! There were two times I thought you were gonna do the secret callout before now! Devin's Patreon is a stupid-good deal folks! A no-brainer!
23:35 Glad to see you covering this. I've made an effort to just keep an open mind about any new development in the broadcasting world. A few things desperately need to be changed on kick but other than that I think they're doing a pretty good job. They work with the creators really quickly. I had a video deleted on my request from a DM and it was personally handled. I feel like if something happens and they don't like it that they would let me know so I can stop breaking TOS, etc. and not just ban me for no reason with no explanation.
always watching to the end, i love that you really dig down in whatever subject you are talking about and explaining it so most people will understand what is going on
I think Kick is going to do really, really well - much better than Twitch. Given that they are a gambling platform, they'll print money and basically use Kick as a marketing funnel. Also more and more creators are joining them and they don't need to throw stupid amounts of money on them like Mixer did :O)
Don't worry, I prefer long content. & Yes, I'm still here at the end. Multi streams makes sense, but sounds a bit complicated. Especially if following the live chat.
34:50 Still here. This has been VERY insightful for me as a small content creator that's trying to grow. Now, obviously I REALLY WON'T MULTISTREAM. But IF I WERE TO, it's nice to know that right now is a good time to build up viewers on there and other platforms. Now I just need to figure out how to get more subscribers.
The 95/5 ratio must be to attract money launderers, getting 95% of tainted money is remarkable . Maybe TikTok paid to allow multistreaming with Twitch, Tiktok makes money from live via subs and purchase of gifts and also a large amount of home shopping type channels that TikTok control.
I think Twitch is on the verge of actually making profits. The revenue split changes for streamers will make a small diff, the ad incentives really have converted loads of streamers to playing ads from not playing them at all, this will make a bigger difference.

- copyright violations - the larger they become, the more likely they will attract DMCA takedowns, possibly huge legal battles

Im here thanks for the cool video first really looking forward to your analysis on Kick
34:50 gang! Great vid as always, Devin.
Woot I made it to the 34 mins I love your videos man just keep sharing this info its good to know this stuff.
34:50 First shout long timer viewer. Love ya brother keep killing the space. Also give me a job :D

34:50
Like this to let Devin know we are watching and his videos make an impact.
34:00 in and i just wanna say congrats on moving to kick for streaming devin!
Would be very interested in a discussion between Devin and Jaku. Dude does a lot of really interesting stuff in the gaming industry.
im still here! learning video by video, ur gonna help me start to succeed
Love the vids. I didnt comment at 34 mins or whatever but I watched the whole thing lol
Putting creators first. What a concept! (Thanks for the great information Devin)!
Here till end and also what build did you end up running in the new POE league
Stayed here. Loved the info. Thanks
Still here. Good stuff brother!
34 minutes, let's go. Thanks for all the insights
I have been waaaiiiting for this. Thank you Devin!
34:50 every one of your videos i watch/listen to i make it to the shoutout , but im always driving. So its nice to finally be able to drop a comment 😂
This is one of the best "pods" out there - so not watching the entire video would be beyond crazy!
Devin really made an accidental Russel Peters reference. ~~ "34.50" hahahahhaha
thirty-four minutes and 50 seconds, thanks for the breakdowns nash, helps me make informed decisions.
3450 club represent! There were two times I thought you were gonna do the secret callout before now!
Devin's Patreon is a stupid-good deal folks! A no-brainer!
Still here, honestly These Vids have been helping alot Thank you so much
Still here! at the 34 minute mark. LOVE these videos!
I'm still here :D
23:35 Glad to see you covering this. I've made an effort to just keep an open mind about any new development in the broadcasting world. A few things desperately need to be changed on kick but other than that I think they're doing a pretty good job. They work with the creators really quickly. I had a video deleted on my request from a DM and it was personally handled. I feel like if something happens and they don't like it that they would let me know so I can stop breaking TOS, etc. and not just ban me for no reason with no explanation.
always watching to the end, i love that you really dig down in whatever subject you are talking about and explaining it so most people will understand what is going on
Always great to watch these vids from one of the most knowledgeable out there. :)
34m50s Always All In on interesting topics. Really appreciate your marketing insights! Thank you 💚
Still here Dev always enjoy how informational your videos are
I think Kick is going to do really, really well - much better than Twitch. Given that they are a gambling platform, they'll print money and basically use Kick as a marketing funnel. Also more and more creators are joining them and they don't need to throw stupid amounts of money on them like Mixer did :O)
Thanks for the video. I've enjoyed your recent appearances on Destiny's stream!
The 34 minutes and 56 seconds club! And I'll agree that Multistreaming as a creator starting out is essential.
The Kick website just crashes any time I try to sign in. Would love to be able to check it out. ETA: 30:51
