Is it really worth ditching twitch? I'm struggling to grow as a content creator/streamer and I just dunno what to do, especially thanks to what twitch has been doing recently.
"posting pictures of chickens, this is not an engaged CEO" -- LOL Devin you are a treasure, the internet needs more content from you. Twitch admittedly sucks but your streams are still missed.
22:41 and still here. Always love the vids Devin 👍 I actually find it surprising that I've never seen Twitch really marketing their platform much (like TV ads, etc), but at the same time, they likely rely on their affiliates/partners doing that for them. I applied for partner twice, the second time talking about my plan to use RUclips videos as a way to educate aspiring streamers and bring people over to Twitch, and they accepted my application. I suspect that me saying that was factored in to their decision.
As someone that stepped away from 20 years of management and managing over 400 people at peak in the retail sector I appreciate the delivery system you have for dropping content! It has also inspired me to use notepad to organize thoughts on the fly. Thank you!
I had to back seat content creation for a bit due to becoming a grandfather, mother’s health and other personal issues, so a coherent snapshot from someone that tells it straight is refreshing and always informative.
I think a big problem Twitch has is that they're kind of half-assing two different categories. They've got an in-grained community built around gaming, but they've tried to branch out to more non-gaming related streaming. But that's not going to work without discoverability; they're trying to build a new content strategy using their existing user base. They either need to emphasize building discoverability and getting new creators AND a new user base to support those streamers, or they need to double-down on gaming with vertical integration. (An example of how they could do that is to challenge Steam.) I think they need to pick one of these two areas and focus all their efforts there (to paraphrase Homer Simpson, it's better to whole-ass one thing than half-ass two things lol). And on top of that, they really need to strongly improve their advertisement system; make it far more targeted to specific streamers/games/tags, and make it self-service allowing micro-spending (e.g. Google Ads lets me spend $10 per day on ads; not going to make me rich, but it means I'm always slowly growing).
22:41 Made it this far. Thank you Devin for continuing to cover these topics and being willing to share this information. Those of us that are working to grow and rebuild ESPECIALLY need to be hearing this.
22:41 The sad part is all the wholesome, genuine content creators I personally know who have serious tunnel vision and don't want to diversify. They see the immediate returns on Twitch and when things start to shake it's already too late. Building a brand outside Twitch is gradual but the eventual ROI is so much better. Those people could achieve more and help more people, but they just choose not to, because "Twitch is POG!".
Ayo, I found you about 2 years ago, and you invoked my love of marketing! I havent be able to catch a stream in a while but I am going to college for marketing bc I found you!
22:41 still here, used to stream on Twitch about 18months or so, was thinking about returning, but your videos are giving me second thoughts. Leaning further towards RUclips with each of your videos
Your videos are always fascinating, even at 22 minutes. I couldn't possibly care any less about Twitch but I feel like there's always something to learn in all of your work.
22:41, always here to the end, but now I have to comment on the hair.. when are you starting your career pivot to Emo Band frontman?! JKJKJK! Love the videos as always.
I hear you pretty much every time like at 22 minutes in. It's unfortunate that Twitch has no sign of making any significant or neat updates or changes. One thing I always wanted was a clips section. Imagine an official Twitch clips app, it would an overnight sensation. After listening to the whole video and thinking on the state of Twitch. There's a few ideas I have that could help them blow up again. Creator friendly ones mainly like offering 70/30 to all Twitch partners. And then bigger perks for bigger ones like the top 5. One thing I'd ask you and others is, who would you recommend as a CEO of Twitch? Or as a face, a community manager perhaps. Anyone come in mind for maybe a top 3 or 5 best possible people?
22:41 Made it this far, wish I could figure out a clear direction. One day I want to really BUILD. And GRIND. And then the next day I'll just post shitposts, vertical format CSGO clips I hit, and just vibe. Sometimes the future looks bright. Sometimes it doesn't. I wish decisions were easier.
Hey Devin @devinnash, won't drop your CTA because you'll get the engagement from the rest of this comment. ;) Always appreciate your videos as I have always treated content creation like publishing and a business. Just a minor correction to one of the data points you shared. When you spoke of the cost to Amazon of a Prime payment to a streamer (one use per customer per month to be clear), while their internal accounting may be different, their net cost is not the approx $5 you mentioned. They don't pay $5 to a streamer from a Twitch Prime sub. They pay somewhere between $2.50 and $3 - it seems to vary month by month and may be effected by where the Prime customer is located (nation). So Twitch still extracts their split "value" out of their own internal program and does not convey 100% to the streamer. One other point, unless I'm mistaken, Twitch Affiliates and Partners are not allowed to multi-stream (live stream to Twitch and any other platform). If I am incorrect can you please point me to the place in the TOS where it is permitted? I'd do it if I could.
2241 gang whaddup! Fantastic vid. really great insight. Ive personally made the decision to step away from streaming to focus more on my YT content. Just feels like an absolute waste of time streaming for a few hours when that time could be put toward something more productive
It's interesting that given Amazons access to c-suite they don't put a Jeff Bezos kinda guy in charge, who can seriously push innovation and growth. I'd even pick a marketing specialist - Eric Hirshberg would be available who used to run Activision and especially Call of Duty. I would put someone in charge, who can push Twitch back to a cultural phenomenon vs. just a tech platform. Obviously the tech is important, but that's what your CTO can do. It always baffled me that Twitch still has no good VOD support - literally all the big twitch clips end up on RUclips :O)
8:33 if i'm not mistaken, Amazon would only have to pay $2.50 per twitch prime sub, since they usually take 50% of subscriber revenue, so a streamer only sees half of the cash per sub. but the point still stands, $25 mil cash burn per month is a lot
I'm sure accounting wise, it's the full $5. Twitch gets the other 2.50. while that's out of one pocket into another type concept. It's probably still seen as a $5 cost to amazon
21:41 I started watching Twitch shortly after they switched from JustinTV. Probably 2 years ago now I stopped watching and creating content on Twitch. It's hilariously sad how mismanaged the platform has become and I'm so sad to see that the new CEO probably won't correct the course of the ship.
22:41 gang represent! 🤘 I miss the good old times of twitch but they are long time gone, personally I am just waiting for when amazon will abandon this ship and sell it off or something. Btw I totally think you and Zach Bussey should have a talk together..
I wonder how feasible it would be should Amazon look at shutting down Twitch for a group of streamers and developers to get together and buy it from them.. Even though it has nearly 3B in revenue last year it might be worth a lot less if Amazon simply decides to cut it.
djWheat, who doesn't even work there, couldn't see a space on Twitch for clips being native on the site, similar to a shorts/tiktok algorithm. He doesn't even work there anymore but I'm sure his mindset is the same as many others who do still work there, which results in a stale site that will become irrelevant in a few years. How they can't see that a simple update, which keeps people on platform, and not sending them to Reddit or RUclips, baffles me...
Feels unlikely to really think we have 100% conversion from Amazone Prime users, using prime sub every month. Especially with twitch tucking prime sub button a layer deeper than it used to be. Less obvious it's ready to use again is my guess as why it changed. All your info is solid, and even if it's 25 mil/mo burn not 50 it's still giant hole every month to climb out of. Wonder the amount of Amazon prime subs that exist because of twitch prime subs? Or how many shoppers Amazone gains they wouldn't have without the niche incentive of free prime sub getting them into Prime, and might as well use it right? Would like to see stats on the backend of those stats, if someone could see the sales attached to twitch prime users.
There are massive layoffs across the tech industry at the moment. It seems that some Amazon bean-counters have identified the dead wood at Twitch. I expect to see more layoffs here in the near future as the team try to consolidate around their core business. But as revenue from livestreaming dries up, Twitch must adapt or die; where are the visionaries that will take the next step to algorithmically-generated video-on-demand?
A platform that was supposed to be the home of gamers and evolve loosely into a fun livestreaming platform as a side thing, that also first ever funded gaming as a profitable job will probobly die next year and we won't see anything like it probobly within the next 5 years. Last video was weak devin, but this one? Truer
I want to know what's really going on with tywicth and youtube because that's a little odd both youtube and twitch ceo stepped something big must be about to happen
