I cant Express enough ,how I love thee fact you give these majestic trees ,that were enjoyed by us ,in a yard for years and years a whole new purpose and life. Makeing it able to be enjoyed for even longer . A second life. Thank you. Awsome video.
Oh yeah! Bring it on! Beautiful deep grain. When you poured water over it, you could look down into it. Wow. Thanks for sharing!
Wow, I never knew Chinese chestnut could look that beautiful. I hope you find more and share with us. Can’t wait to see the rest of that log. I have a feeling what’s left looks even better.
Beautiful slabs. Thanks for your channel, without you I would never get to see this. I love beautiful wood and am grateful for all of you independent processors who take the time to get the best out of quality logs.
That chestnut is Beautiful Nathan! My grandfather born in 1892, talked about taking pillow cases and gathering chestnuts for roasting. Here in southeast Pa. The American Chestnut made up about 60% of the forests here. I always have a few on my 8acres but they never get more than an inch or two before the blight takes them out. The American Chestnut Foundation has been working on developing a blight resistant tree for years. Chestnut was often used as a base to be covered with veneer since there was so much of it. Barns, chicken houses and houses were built from it since it was so plentiful and had to be used after the blight hit. I've work with chestnut quite a few times and it's great wood to use. It reminds me a lot of sassafras in the grain but has a unique color of it own and ages down to a lovely brown color. Thanks Kindly Nathan. Every log you saw is like opening a Christmas present. These slabs should go over really big I'd say. How many times do you run into a log and slabs like that? And music wise, check out "Red Tail Wing". They make great music. Peace and Saw dust! My house is circa 1928 and all the millwork and interior doors are American chestnut. You say what I’ve heard before. The trees were dying quickly and there was an abundance of lumber as a result. None of our woodwork is painted and it is truly beautiful wood.
I'm a single senior in the suburbs of Detroit. I stumbled upon you and love to watch you work. Your instructions are easy to follow and a good timber (pun intended) for listening. Your choice of background music is calming. Thanks for sharing your life.
thank you appreciate you watching,
Wood is so natural and beautiful and you do a great job ,you really inspire me to look in to this feild. I can see how rewarding it is and the beauty of it. Thank You
Absolutely beautiful slabs ... so good your back with that awesome sawmill ...thank you!
MY MY MY WHAT BEAUTIFUL WOOD YOU HAVE!!
GLAD TO HAVE OTW BACK!
SURE HAVE MISSED YOU AND TENNESSEE. BEAUTIFUL DRONE VIDEOS!
What the hay hay?!
@@everlastinggrass: It's easy to see he got a woody.
My dad and I planted three Chinese Chestnuts in 1959. I milled one myself with a chainsaw and made a mountain dulcimer out of it. The other two I gave a local guy with a mill. I traded one log and several white oaks for one of the other logs milled. I have a bunch of lumber I don't know what I will do with, but it is precious to me.
This is the first time I have seen Chinese Chestnut in all the years I was in the millwork business. Yes, as you said Nathan, similar to butternut. Absolutely beautiful. I hope you get more Chestnut logs. That would make beautiful paneling, trim, cabinets, etc.
Some amazing slabs of chestnut there Nathan. So good to see you saving this wonderful wood from being used as firewood. It will have a long life as a treasured object bringing joy to people as it did when a live tree!
That tree will make some amazing bar tops or table tops. Simply beautiful!

Nice stuff, Nathan. Very, very nice. I make the occasional cigar humidor and that chestnut would make some seriously beautiful boxes.

Wonderful slabs, Nathan. Hardly any sapwood either. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the log.
It's awesome dry, and the beauty after you put water on it is so beautiful

What a keeper! Surely do look forward to a new production from Mr. Nathan when I turn on the computer in the mornin'. He never disappoints! Beautiful wood.
Such a gorgeous piece of wood deserves to be placed in featured pieces such as mantles, tables of all types, desks, as well as wood veneer for dressers and highboys and so much more. LOVE THIS BEAUTIFUL FIGURED GRAIN!!!!!!!

@@OutoftheWoods0623 I come from a long line of Master Craftsmen and learned about the trade I developed a love of woodworking and have always been fascinated with the grain and experience the joy of how to best use such beautiful grain to give the best display of the natural beauty of such woods.
Great stuff, Nathan .. keep up the good work, and I'll stay tuned. Thank you.
Enjoy your videos, the wood grains (figures) and it is a special joy to listen to you.
I must say I found this very interesting! Very unique. Looks alive. My first thought was a guitar body. Really like how you explain the complexity of cuts and wood grains.

My home was built back in the 19teens. All of the doors and trim are American Chestnut. I baby all of it and have fought off 20 years of my wife wanting to paint some pieces.
Beautiful wood, sir. I grow Hybrid American Chestnut and Chinese Chestnut in my TN nursery, but I had no idea the Chinese Chestnut would look that nice. Thanks for sawing this for us.Keep up the good work on your channel.

I love to watch these videos. I live in the UK and I've always had a thing about timber, and wood grain. I love the fact that every board is unique, even when they come from the same tree. I'd like to know more about that song at the end, it's beautiful too.
That is a gorgeous piece of wood. Incredible.

Really beautiful wood. Thanks for sharing!
Nathan, my son (also Nathan) and I love your channel! We were so excited to see the new mill. That chestnut looks awesome! We turn pens together and will have to look for some of that to try! Thanks for the great wholesome videos!
You sawing into a log is like opening up a pirates treasure chest. You don't really know if your going to find empty bottles of rum or jewels and gold. This one truly speaks for itself.
The crotch
Whoa, looks like really good American chestnut...that IS amazing! 👍🏻👍🏻
That's absolutely beautiful! It's got me wanting to take down my chestnut trees. Everyone hates those spiky nut pods but my dad loved them. I guess that's why they are still standing. 👍👍
Wow . Black walnut has been my favorite wood for over 50 years. But that's giving it a run for first place. Absolutely gorgeous. I bet it would finish in toung oil even better. That's my favorite finish for walnut. 😊
indeed, hard to decide which is best,
That chestnut looks great. Keep the excellent videos coming.
Well --------- That is amazing , carn't wait to see the rest of it , You have had a win there .
Thanks buddy

Congrats on the home run with that Chestnut. Sure love watching you with your mill. You seem real happy doing what you love.
Thanks. Appreciate you watching
I’ve been interested in the history of the American chestnut since I went to college at a small school in Bristol, Tennessee in the ‘70s. While day hiking on the Appalachian Trail, I saw these massive stumps, many of them 10 feet in diameter. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but later read a book on the history of the area, and learned of the chestnut blight. It actually started in the 1800s, but by the 1930s was pervasive, and eventually wiped out the chestnuts, which were the dominant species in Eastern forests.
Absolute perfection expressed in the wood.
That is some beautiful wood. I just wish these videos came with smell. I love the way fresh sawn wood smells.
Thanks for watching
Beautiful slab my friend. Thanks for sharing and I hope you have a blessed week.
Dale
Thanks. Appreciate it
Nice very nice wood grain in that Chinese Chestnut! Never know what your going to run into milling different species of wood and that is what makes using that new mill you got so fun to operate!
Awesome grain in that wood!! I hope you will show more of the sawing though. I'm amazed by how quiet that LT40 is.
I am in the uk love watching shows about RV s now I am addicted to your channel
thanks, appreciate you watching,
Nice looking wood. Thanks for sharing Nathan.
thanks Guy,
Another great video. You do an excellent job of explaining the various facets of the job. Beautiful graining in the chestnut. Ancsious to see the next vid.
It's "anxiouis," nimrod, not ancsious." Pay attention in grade school did ya?
I apologize for the above comment. Sometimes the editor in me creeps out and I can't control my fingers as I tupe. Nevertheless, that's one magnificent piece of, of what? I'd guess you'd call it crotch-figured chestnut. I've made many a gunstock in my life, but I don't think I've ever heard of one being made of chestnut, but I don't have the foggiest idea why not. Seems to me that species would be tough enough, and that figure after being cut and shaped would go for a rather hefty prices.
Glad to have you back, love the new woodmizer, and that Chesnut is something special!! Love the videos, and I've even downloaded and paid for a couple of Jason Lowe music albums as well, good stuff Nathan, thank you for sharing your craft!
Absolutely beautiful !! In the 60's, as a little boy, our family mill as a )) Frick with a 48 inch blade that my Dad could actually tune/temper with a hammer. It was powered by a vertical 4 cylinder Waukesha engine. On a high production day, it would drink 50 gallons of fuel. Your Woodmizer is an excellent mill.
Omg! Those slabs are just gorgeous!!
yes better than expected,
Such beautiful works of art. Nature is so amazing!
Thanks for watching
Great looking slabs, love the channel cheers from Melbourne Australia

12:49 I would say that is the MOST beautiful slab I have EVER seen.It looks like black walnut . I did NOT know chestnut was so pretty.
Glad that the LT40 lets you get the most out of these logs. That chestnut looks amazing.

I am an old wood worker and I can tell you, that you have some beautiful and unusual wonderful pieces there
Congratulations, Again! I'm always excited to see you post new videos
Thanks. Appreciate it
WOW! what a beautiful log you've got there. I've heard of Chinse chestnut but never seen it. That is going to make some beautiful furniture. I wish I lived closer or I would buy a couple from you. Thanks for showing us.
Super Chinese Chestnut! Wood appreciate posting your music playlist, sounds great.
Stunningly beautiful wood. Now that you have whet the appetite, can't wait to see the finishing of this one and see what the rest of it looks like. I was wondering why you didnt do it all now...then I saw the "to be continued", that is such a TEASE! LOL Love it, anxiously awaiting.
When American chestnut started succumbing to the blight, folks started planting Chinese chestnut for the nuts. Have seen them planted as ornamentals, specimens, and as screens between board-fence and the roadside. Those two and Chinquapin are all related as one family. Butternut, Heartnut, and the walnuts are a second family. The Hickories and Pecans are a third family of temperate nut-trees. Beautiful grain on that tree - really nice deep tawny color.
Yeah buddy! Good stuff.
I was in a thrift store one day some years back and came across a homemade picture frame that had been made from wormy Chestnut. It was beautifully crafted, tight corners, very nice hand chiseled detailing. 24 by 36 inches. I happened to have an original oil painting in that size....a nice pasture and barn scene done by a local individual. That picture and frame went together like a duck and a pond.
It seems that nut trees in general make for beautiful wood. That Chestnut is magnificent!
Can't get any better, awesome
Definitely a beautiful looking slab! Making me want to get back there to see you a lot sooner! Man I need to get a few spabs!
thanks Kevin, appreciate you watching,
Dang that's a wonderful grain pattern all the way around. I'm not sure I would make a coffee table with it, but I would make a headboard with it, mainly so that every morning I wake up and see that grain. So happy this was my first video today, think I'm to find a way to open up this spalted oak crotch I've got sitting in the shop
NICE!!!!
thanks Bill,
That's a beautiful looking slab, it sure would make a great table top
A freaking mazing!!
