Superior expertise ; I was totally impressed ! I was the sawyer at a Chip-N -Saw Mark IV Saw Mill for six years. I averaged 80 thousand board feet per 10 hour shift of lumber and had a maximum production of 128 thousand bf in a 10 hour shift .
    Your introduction was
impressive : so was your rationale when explaining your decisions on cutting the lag .
Therefore, I subscribed to your excellent blog .
Some of your cutting off of the knots should have been one inch because short pieces of black walnut could have been used for making valuable small projects : jewelry boxes and short trim .
That log made some one of the most impressive cuts that I have ever seen ! Salute !!

I love your channel. Your knowledge and explanations of how and why you cut the logs certain ways is something I really appreciate. White pine, Black walnut...it takes all kinds. So, check this out...I love the music at the end of this video (and what you play in many of your videos), but not because I'm a fiddle player or banjo picker. I play trumpet and trombone; grew up in the suburbs of Chicago; played in rock bands covering Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears, and Tower of Power; went to college for my music degree in Chicago; played in big band jazz bands and bombastic orchestras playing Bruckner, Mahler, and Wagner. For over 40 years people have asked me 'what is your favorite kind of music?'. My answer has always been 'There are two kinds of music. Good music and bad music. I like good music.' I would recommend your channel as a source of good music any day! Come for the sawmill, stay for the music. Or vice versa!

I have cut very freshly downed walnut logs and when you first cut them, they have a color that I can only describe as the most beautiful violet/green you have ever seen in your life. However, in just a few moments changes to the usually associated with walnut, brown. It is a fleeting moment that you see that very unique color combination that cannot be adequately duplicated anywhere else. It is really something to behold. Let me know if you have ever seen this happen.

I remember many years ago reading that folks back in the day who were working by hand, pit sawing for fine furniture, etc., got to where they could look at the bark and tell a lot about the wood inside the log so they didn't waste effort on so-so wood when they wanted furniture grade and didn't waste fine wood on boxes, etc. I noted the twist in much of the bark in that walnut. Kind of interesting sort of thing to study in the future. There is crotch figure and then there is crotch figure, and there can be glory in the rest of a piece of wood as well. Something I am enjoying watching as well as learning about the basics of running a saw mill. I do know the old boys could walk out and fell a maple for the best fiddle back figure, for instance, just by looking at the bark. (I made a couple of violins back when I could still hear.)

unsettled, I found myself watching her so intently that I wasn’t paying ANY attention to what YOU were saying. I’m sure that’s not what you want. As much as she’s a beautiful and wonderful little creature, you might want to keep her out of the picture so she isn’t detracting from what you are saying. When you were discussing about removing timber, it made me think about the movie Hell, or Highwater, when Jeff Bridges and his partner go into the West, Texas restaurant, and the old old woman comes up and says what don’t you want? And they looked at her like she was crazy and they said what?? and she said what don’t you want you either don’t want the corn or you don’t want the beans! In milling, you look at the log and say, what part of that log do I NOT want? Then you cut away the parts that you don’t want.

Really like watching you work. You appear to be the honest, good hearted person portrayed in southern raised people. I was thinking about if you installed a ceiling exhaust fan above the mill. It would cut down on the noxious exhaust, help keep your ceiling from being coated over time with the sooty exhaust, provide you with healthier breathing air and cut down on needing more and brighter lighting as the ceiling reflexes less due to the darling from exhaust smoke. Just a thought but you could install a couple of furnace disposable filter at the intake area, that would keep out unwanted things like bugs. Cats, rodents all while you get cooling air whether the breeze is blowing or not. I know you have a list a mile long of things you want or need to do but there seems to be a lot of benefits with this one. Stay safe my friend.

I disagree your cutting end grain and then the branch is side grain

Honest to God, that really looks like a satellite view of a hurricane! That is SO COOL! That is something you want use where it can be seen - top of a desk, or a counter, or maybe a front door! What was the line in that poem by Kilmer, "But only God can make a tree." Nice job, God!

Nathan those are beautiful boards. There are so many uses for those boards.
I appreciated what you said about yielding the best boards from logs when I visited the mills such as Andersen Windows, Morgan Company in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Also, I was involved in production with ROW Window Company in Rockdale, Illinois. In some cases, they got shop grade lumber in by the carload. Now, I'm involved with a mill that specializes in cutting hard maple from logs for flooring. I love the smell of sawdust.

Hello from North Alabama, we usually get the weather a few hours before y'all do. Trees are a lot like people, going through a few storms in life makes you more interesting on the inside

I agree with the patterns however , spruce would carries the sound much better acoustically than the hard wood of black walnut .

This is an example of the skills that was everyday back in the day, and today, nobody at a sawmill gets it, the spillage is enourmous. Luck that the paper plants and the wood-pellets mills atleast can use the spill.
