I think 5/4 . That log is so beautiful . I don't remember the the last time i have seen so much figure in a log . Can you imagine how that is going to look finished . Oh my .😊😊😊😊👍👍👍👍👍👍
5/4. Bet your phone is ringing by tomorrow with people wanting to buy all of it. The music in this video was very relaxing. I like the guitar picking one.
That log was well saved Sir. Top quality gun stock material, and worth a fortune! And to think this was hidden until you unearthed it, and you being the first ever to see this beauty.
I am really impressed watching this show. He is very informative and I always learn something every episode I watch. I hope to see him on here more often!
I love watching you sawing pretty much any kind of wood, and those new blades certainly race through everything that you’ve been cutting, but hands down Black Walnut is definately my favourite. The figure and color is amazing and thats what keeps me coming back for more❤️ Thanks again. J🏴
Wow. What a beauty! Go with the 9/4’s. It’s so wide and will make some incredible slabs. This is one beautiful piece of walnut. Stunning. Someone suggested going back to 5/4’s once the crotch slabs are done. That would work also! This one... just beautiful, Nathan. Really would like to see more of it. Saw it so you can make the most from it. But no matter how you saw it, this one is really magical.
Absolutely beautiful grain. I have an affinity for black walnut anyways. SIttin on the back porch with my grand dad as a 4 yr old boy and shuckin black walnuts. I really enjoy seein the different woods you cut up.
I swear t9 God, I’d take a 24”x36” slab, and just sand it, polish it, and hang it on the wall as art! Between the steady drone of the saw, and the tranquil music you dub in, It’s great video to watch just before I close my eyes at night.
I am quickly falling in love with this channel, since I have a love for natural wood grain. Your skills and knowledge are amazing, now my dream is to be there when you saw into a log of Eastern Hop Hornbeam (akak Hardhack, Levelwood, etc.). Not big stuff, but it should look nice inside! Keep up the great work, mill Master.
I don’t know how I ended up at this channel, but I’m glad I did. I know my family had a big involvement in the lumber industry in the past but I never expected to be listening to videos about sawing wood while I grind away at my job. Thank you for this channel. You can bet that if I’m ever down your way that I’ll cough up the fifty to hang out and see how all of this is done.
Wow..8:50 in and the 1st cut and the wood is absolutely beautiful! Then at 10 minutes and stunning is all I can say! Oh my God!!!! it just keeps getting better and that is only the 2nd board!
As always, thanks for sharing! I know the chances of see something as handsome as that last slab in person are unlikely, and your efforts to convey these wonders of Gods' hand are much appreciated by this grateful Texan.
Merry Christmas Friend! I’ve throughly enjoyed watching you operate the mill. I’ve been watching for 17 months or so. I’m 46 & grew up as the son of a sawyer. My dad is known as one of the top sawyers in the southeast. He is the Wikipedia of sawmill questions. As I was watching ARMS FAMILY HOMESTEAD I wondered if Daniel had ever watched your channel & boom he rolls your name & channel off his tongue. 2 awesome men sharing knowledge.
That big knot on the very first cut you made would be great for wood turning on a lathe. If you want gunstock blanks, you'll have to go 10/4. Some nice looking wood.
Wow, how beautiful is that Walnut log Nathan. I was quite disappointed when you got to the end of the video, I would have loved to have seen at lest the next slab to come off. Perhaps I will stumbled across it in another video. Cheers, don from South Aust.
All I can say is WOW! what some wonderful slabs. Only wished I lived in your neck of the woods Nathan. Whoever gets those slabs have won the lottery!! Many thanks for sharing this video, it’s truly magical. Graham🇬🇧🇬🇧🌲🌳
That came out so beautiful I hope you stayed with the 5/4 If I had been cutting seeing that much beauty I would have gone down to 3/4 Wood gives off it's own art I for one appreciate the beauty of natural complex wood grain
I don't really know much about it, but that is one of the very best logs I've seen you mill. Never thought I'd be so entertained by this, but I'm beginning to have thoughts about saving up for an entry level mill to salvage logs around here that are being wasted for firewood, when they could better appreciated a lot longer by wood craftsmen. Thanks for the great job you've done in developing your camera and editing skills, too.
I live in a residential neighborhood known on old maps as OAK FOREST. We have lost hundreds of 100 yro white oaks in the past 5 years. Probably all have been used for firewood. A neighbor brought home beautiful black walnut "firewood" from a large tree that was cut down on UMBC campus about 40 years ago to burn in his wood stove. It made me sick to see the smoke. With his permission I saved a few pieces, and have made pistol grips, and shoulder stocks out of them. I have also purchased black walnut and cherry, machine carved stocks and made black powder rifles using them. I really enjoy your videos.
I wish we could get boards like these i Denmark. Also enjoy your videos I sit drooing over all that lovely wood you saw up. I am a pensionered hobby turner and it hurts to see you burn bigger pieces than I can get over here. Regards Dr. D.
My choice would be the 5/4" thick stock, Nathan, but only because that is what I use the most. Love all of the figure in this log so far. Keep up the great work, and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family !!!
There is a trend of mounting a thinner slab on plywood and doing a matching 'foldover' on the edge giving more yield and availability so 5/4 'shares' the beauty for some projects
@@OutoftheWoods0623 Thanks bud. I’m still building custom homes with the company I work for full time and I’m hoping once I learn how to price things , that out mill will be a decent asset and not just for my personal interest. It was a huge investment for us and I need it to pay for itself eventually.
The knots have the Halos around them giving a great look for the boards even on the crotch wood.... That Halos and the crotch blend in give the slab a surprising ripple in the wood as 2 water drop into a stream running from other end of the slab!!!!! I know that is mouth full but that is what I see!!!!! Very Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Thanksgiving to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing wood glad to see some walnut on the mill again... I just bought a good size stack of walnut at an auction the other day...I used it to make my first cutting board...I am going to support you on patreon thank you for all of the great info!
Man oh man. When you show the figure on some of these like today, I emit a low groan as if in pain. If anybody heard me they would think its a toothache or something, but really its a groan of "ohhh sooo good". Then I laugh at myself. Thanks for you videos.
I am beginning to tink I should equip my garage with he tool I'd need to produce steamer trunks and cedar chests etc., what a wonderful way to close out the cold of winter and the summer heat.
I remember the video of that log and your trolley well. I told you to put something on that cable to keep it from getting you if it snapped. You’ve come a long way since then my friend. Different home, mill, and way of moving logs. Let’s see you beat that log.
Oh man that is some beautiful timber. In my area they cut back trees from the power lines oaks maple birch. You name it some of them are 30” diameter and straight for 20’ they just left them lay there i wish i had the resources to get em i was able to get a 32” x 6” thick poplar slice from a stump

Stay with 4/4 more can be made with it and I would think bigger dollar return. As a carpenter I could do a whole lot it this way.
Sorry 5/4.
Some 5/4 would be a good idea. Better to have choices. Fine looking wood. Planlng is an option as well.
Depends on your market, which you know far better than anyone out here. The 5/4 boards would sure make some nice heirloom furniture.
I think 5/4 . That log is so beautiful .
I don't remember the the last time i have seen so much figure in a log .

Black gold indeed. Gorgeous!

You're welcome Nathan.
Beautiful slabs and the editing and music is superb.
thank you,
That grain is GORGEOUS! What beautiful find!
This log is fantastic and easily can see if fetching some good dollars. Beautiful colors!
Those are beautiful boards. I vote for 5/4 because one doesn't see enough highly figured boards vs slabs.

thank you,
Beautiful dramatic patterns!
Nate, this log made me feel like watching Christmas gifts unwrapping. Thanks for always sharing your passion for sawing.
Breathtaking patterns
I know nothing about this except for the fact that wood is beautiful.
Maybe the nicest walnut yet from your sawmill. Makes me think of the high end Claro Walnut for gunstocks.
I wish we could get boards like these i Denmark. Also enjoy your videos I sit drooing over all that lovely wood you saw up. I am a pensionered hobby turner and it hurts to see you burn bigger pieces than I can get over here. Regards Dr. D.
What a beautiful piece of wood.
Looks like a 3-D topographical...stunning depth
Wow what a good looking log! Glad you saved it.

My choice would be the 5/4" thick stock, Nathan, but only because that is what I use the most. Love all of the figure in this log so far. Keep up the great work, and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family !!!
thank you,

Masterful job - beautiful wood.
Holy schnikes! That's some serious stuff. Worthy of 5/4".
Those big knots and burls are probably worth a pretty penny to the right woodturner
that's some mighty fine grain. mesmerizing.
