  • Feminism is changing. And it’s not going in the right direction. People don’t want to call themselves feminists anymore, and the whole idea... the movement... has changed! Feminism is straying from its path and taking a nasty route. It is turning away from its original form, and women are disregarding history. Why is there such a stigma around this word, “feminism?” How can we change for the better, and go back to the right path? Nina is a South African student at the American International School Of Cape Town. She is very interested in activism and believes that everyone should have equal rights and responsibilities. She wants to get her message out and into the world, and believes that doing TEDx will help her on this journey. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I think, like most things, it's currently in a state of overcorrection. Instead of being about equality, it's about I want to feel in power and the other side to feel what it's like to be marginalized.

I'd say it like this: imagine a person in a wheel chair and one fully abled. The fully abled person can walk up the stairs to the entry point. But the person in the wheelchair cannot. So you build a ramp. Is that special treatment? You are still heading to the same entrance? The diversity hiring is bs if qualifications r overlooked but generally feminism is fighting for opportunity for all. Does that makes sense?

      The Panzerkampfwagen Ill, commonly
known as the Panzer Ill, was a medium tank
developed in the 1930s by Germany, and
was used extensively in World War I1. The
      official German ordnance designation was
Sd.Kfz. 141. It was intended to fight other
      armoured fighting vehicles and serve
alongside and support the similar Panzer IV,
which was originally designed for infantry
support. However, as the Germans faced
the formidable T-34, more powerful anti.
tank guns were needed, and since the
Panzer IV had more development potential
with a larger turret ring, it was redesigned to
      mount the long-barrelled 7.5 cm KwK 40
gun. The Panzer Ill effectively swapped
roles with the Panzer IV, as from 1942 the
last version of the Panzer Ill mounted the 7.5
cm KwK 37 L/24 that was better suited for
infantry support. Production of the Panzer Ill
ceased in 1943. Nevertheless, the Panzer
Ill's capable chassis provided hulls for the
Sturmgeschütz Ill assault gun until the end
      of the war.

This speech is very inspiring. Feminism means empowering and fighting for womans rights, it doesnt mean bring down men. These days so many people give this word the wrong meaning and I've seen many people trying to put them selves above men. If a man slaps a woman its abuse, if a woman slaps a man its girl power. Woman have it hard, its very hard for us as woman but dont forget than men have it just as hard as us. We're supposed to fight for equality not superiority

This is a hot take, but we need to stop striving for equality. What we should be striving for is fairness.
That may sound like the same thing, but at least the way I see it, there is a difference.
Equality is everyone is equal. That is, everyone has exactly the same thing, regardless of effort, natural talent, physical differences, etc. Everyone should have the same amount of resources, they should be expected to have the same interests, everything should be equal. There should always be an even number of men and women in every field, there should be an even distribution of races amongst all professions, etc.
The problem is that people aren't equal. We have inherit biological differences, as well as psychological and cultural ones. Equality would mean that everyone goes out to play a game of football, and even if one team is composed o NFL pros and the other is made up of out of shape folks who have never played football, then the game should still end in a draw. It would mean that people would have to like everything equally, so nothing could truly ever be popular.
Fairness means that everyone is treated fairly. This means that they should have the same opportunity to succeed in whatever they want to pursue . . . but that they will also be judged fairly on the actions they take during those pursuits. If someone has more talent, works harder, puts in the hours and succeeds on merit, then they should get ahead of the guy who puts in just enough work to get by. That first person should also be rewarded more because they are more valuable to the company. No, they aren't being treated equally, but they are being treated fairly.
Fairness also means that anyone can try out for any field, but that field selection and success is due to things like personal preferences, individual skill, etc. We shouldn't be saying "We need more women in STEM", we should be saying, "Every woman that wants to enter the STEM field should be allowed to do so, but will be judged solely by their own merit during their time there".
Now, it's true that some people don't have that same opportunities as others because of poor decisions made by their parents, or sometimes even just bad circumstances through no fault of their own. And I do think that work should be done to ensure that there is a minimum level of comfort and opportunity that everyone should enjoy. But that doesn't mean taking away from folks who put in the hard work and were able to give their own kids better opportunities.
Equality is ultimately about outcome. It wants everyone to be at the same end point. It's a rigid set of categories that you need everything to have just the right amount of, or else it isn't truly equal.
Fairness is about opportunity and impartiality. It's about having standards and rules, but judging everyone by those standards and rules the same way. It's about rewarding individual efforts but also taking into account disadvantages someone might have.
    Strive for fairness.

Coming from a weekend where I was asked to explain something and ended up having a woman shout her input, while I was mid-sentence. I remained quiet for her to have he say, despite me being stopped midway and I consider it extremely rude because one person's story isn't more important than another's. I was asked to pick up where I left off and the sudden, abrupt interruptions happened more than 20 times and even when I kept on speaking, this woman just went louder and louder, to a point where my voice was completely drowned out, so I would have no choice but to stop communicating.
There was one other person who wanted to hear me finish what I was asked and when I tried to pick up the story again, wouldn't you believe I was shut down again, and the volume kept going up and up to a point of screaming.
So one of the guests asked, "why do you keep doing that? You voice your opinion over his explanation, so it seems like you're the only one who wants to be heard. It's rude and insulting."
This woman turns her hand towards me and says to the guest, "Okay whatever, listen to whatever!" and waves her hand at me, as if she was trying to get rid of a fly in her face.
So I voice my opinion, instead of choosing to say nothing again and I directly tell her, "It's not okay to treat me like I'm less meaningful. I feel insulted over and over and despite me feeling my conversation is probably of no value to you, I submissively kept quiet while you were shouting at me and then continued only when someone asked me to speak and here I am saying nothing and you're waving me off, like I'm an worthless mosquito. I also deserve the same amount of respect I've been showing you, while you were cutting me off and speaking over me."
She responded by saying, "Well why are you raising your voice then?"
And I said I need to speak but you keep going louder and louder and now that I'm defending my honour because I have self respect, you're telling me this act of standing up for myself is judged by the volume of my voice?"
You know what my own partner says to me? "You should walk away and say nothing." But left me to do so alone! She stayed behind and continued to socialize.
The following day I asked, "if a man had treated you the way she treated me the whole night, would you say it was intimidating, demeaning, rude, overpowering?"
She said yes. And I would have probably smacked him. So I asked her so what option does a man have, other than voicing himself.
She said, "Men should just learn to walk away because we can't make you feel threatened."

No matter how much you dress up feminism it will *always* be a turd in a dress. *I WILL **_NEVER_** ACCEPT FEMINISM!* That is absolute.
Equality, to me, means equal opportunity, not equal outcomes. Equal outcomes means inequality because those who strive to be and do better cannot. Not everyone can be a CEO, a doctor, a scientist, a police officer, a constructor worker, etc. We need skilled people that qualify for these jobs.

    • @Jprimus
      @Jprimus 2 года назад

Feminism was never about equal outcomes and was always about equal opportunity, especially back when giving women an opportunity to vote. Many jobs that mainly men take on, women aren't given the same opportunity and can be just as qualified as men. That's not equal opportunity. If a male and female does the same job, they should get paid the same.
I think your problem is you are looking at new feminists that are absolutely taking steps backwards and ruining all the hard work real feminism was designed for.

It starts when data shows women and girls are kidnapped and trafficked at way higher rates than anyone else. It starts when data shows married women die significantly younger than married men and single women - because women are taught to settle, do everything and worship their horrible husbands. Got my license to practice and landed my first job after grad school, starting pay was 25k higher than the highest female classmate's starting pay. When we compared results, I was told that the pay discrepancy was because I was a man. I explained that my employer's starting offer was equal to what the women in my class had accepted, and I had counter-offered during salary negotiations for 10k more than I ended up with. They were stunned and either didn't even realize that salary could be negotiated at all or were too afraid to ask for more money. Of course, I was told by most that it only worked because I was a man, but several of them since have jumped from their old jobs and did the same as I did and are now making as much as I was if not more.
Here's my advice to everyone: don't be afraid to lose a job you don't have by asking for what you think you're worth with a little on top. They can only say no, or counter. Why is it when women don’t populate certain jobs people immediately jump on the train that it’s because of patriarchy? This is an honest question, why should I accept your assumptions? Even if there are social pressures, you have control over your body and mind. If your friend encourages you to do drugs, would you do it? Then, if the officer asks why you took them what would the answer be? Stereotypes are not an effective argument. People go off on the fact many ceos and executives are men but also don’t recognize that many men don’t have comfy office jobs that women pick.

The idea of feminism meaning equality is laughable because there's already a word for equality. Feminism in its current incarnation is a set of training wheels, allowing women to coast on by with help while others have to work harder. But they never want to take the training wheels off, and it's evident in how infantile a lot of these people act.

All this talk about why everyone should support women as if they are the victims. What about fighting for the right of men? Men are vastly the victims of suicide, incarceration, on the job deaths, lower lifespan by an average of 5 years, losing custody of their child through divorce court and so on. Are people aware that there are consistently more women who have earned bachelor degree over men since 1983 (that's close to 40 years now) Right now there are 14% more women earning bachelor degrees over men, and if you go up to a masters degree that jumps to 20%. Yet we never hear about encouraging more men to go into high education. I'm sick of feminism looking pushing the notion that men are the oppressor and women are the oppressed. Men has to be the first oppressor class in history that have lower education, make the majority of the population prison, make up the vast majority of workers in the most dangerous professions, have a lower life expectancy, and have higher suicide rates over the class of people that we are so called oppressing. Men are suffering world wide and everyone has turned a blind eye to it. No wonder the suicide rate for men.
