Dr Ade van Heerden dived into an interesting topic of "Why modern day feminism is bad for our mental health", addressing amongst other topics, phenomenons such as women empowerment and how they affect a typical woman's psych Best known as former Miss South Africa 2017, Ade van Heerden is also a medical doctor who had her internship at a Military Hospital in Wynberg, Cape Town. Despite the glamour, she believes that medicine is her calling and her impact on lives has been through that platform.
At the Miss South Africa 2017 pageant competition, she emerged as the first princess, stepping in as Miss SA when Demi-Leigh Nel-Pieters left the position when she was crowned Miss Universe. I love that someone disagreeing with modern feminism needs a disclaimer in the description box. That should tell you everything you need to know without even watching the video.

its almost as if TED isn't really about promoting ideas anymore,
just putting them on a pedestal so they can be bashed...

Odd that feminists never say anything about the extreme misogyny of 1slam. Like all lefties that cower when any real danger shows up. If feminists think they are not seen as infidels to be dealt with they are beyond delusional. Feminism was always about destroying the western world not woman's rights. Islam has misogyny built in that the western world has never experienced.Islam does not give a rats about white female privilege no matter the socioeconomic status or class. Shame on you Tedx for needing a disclaimer for this video.
TED, remove this disclaimer. The entire POINT of a TED talk is to challenge currently held ideas and beliefs, has anyone who have watched this video see it as a threat to feminism?
please reply to this message if you think so.
I completely agree. Remove the disclaimer.
I don't see a disclaimer. Where is it in the video?

Exactly! We shouldn’t have to put a disclaimer for subversive thinking. This isn’t hateful at all, and isn’t a threat to feminism either, just a healthy and well deserved critique
agreed.
In a world where unproven truths are flashed around by untrusted sources, we need more of her.
the funny thing is it those established sources who have harvested people trust for ages are now in the ultimate place of power where they know that no one can question them and if anyone does question them they can easily discredit them by saying that they (their opponent) is not a credible source. This is the kind of stuff we see happening on twitter and instagram through "fact checkers"
Very power full and thought provoking, thank you for reminding us of the “I am kind of in control and out of control at the same time” quote.
I find the disclaimer in the description distressing and objectionable.
Yes! A very strong and inspiring message! I am a psychologist and the core of human sufferings is in our beliefs. "World is dangerous and I should not trust men" and "I am a victim and society is against me" is not exactly helping women
Great speech. A lot of extreme feminism is about vengeance and enforcing a matriarchy. Equality means equality. Superiority and wanting to bring men down are not the core values of equality. It's not fair to seek vengeance on a whole gender, play oppression Olympics, and calling any man who disagree with this form of extremism an incel, and misogynist. There are countries in the world where patriarchy is very much alive, but women have it pretty darn good in much of the west.
Now TED is posting a warning that elements of this talk may be objectionable or distressing......
Facts can be very distressing to false ideals.
Trigger warnings.
You want to make a man angry? Let him catch you spreading lies about him. You want to make a woman angry? Let her catch you spreading the "truth" about her. There's your TEDx "disclaimer" suitably explained. It's an open apology for the gaping disconnect some women have between what they think and how they're actually perceived......only this apology's actually being given TO these women (by TEDx)...for allowing this unsavoury disconnect to be pointed out on their platform because they know it'll attract feminine "heat."
Man she is spitting facts 💯, need more like her bro
have not finished the video yet, but i love the objectivity of this talk so far and i am inspired, it is not what people want to hear really but it is necessary that we all have a much open mind to absorb the reality of what is happening around us.

Equality mean equal oppertunity, not equal results. Equal results comes from not only hard work, but playing smart, improving yourself, taking on resposibility and accountability. Those last two things are yet to be seen by many.
Isn't equality of outcome a mith, that could never be achieved without forcing woman to "work with things" and forcing men to "work with people", because men are not as sozial and more interrested in things than woman?
@@touchgrass7834 it forces women to work for it, but the harsh reality is in an actual equal pace and oppertunity, many will find sadly working the career field is ultimately highly unfullfilling (unless youre lucky enough to land in a job you semi dont mind), plus material possesions arent everything. The ultimate downfall of this movement its like being forced to the plantation without even knowing it
And more to that, equal opportunity won't lead to equal outcome because people choose differently. Women are less likely to choose careers that are rather physically demanding.
She brought tears to my eyes...amazing talk
We’ll said, she’s the real example of what women before her worked to achieve, admirable!!!

This talk was logical, factual and amazing. However if you want to improv the society then have justice for men especially in divorce cases. These dodgy lawmakers will never want justice
Why is there little clapping in the end compared to the beginning. Are people mad she’s right?
Probably because it was an incredibly weak and biased argument against feminism. I wouldn’t have clapped at that.
@@FionaColquhoun-st6mn uhuuuh. I think you're mad because you're the people shes calling out
Equality of opportunity not equality of outcome.
You'd be surprised how many women I've said this to have a problem with it in principal. They either don't understand it or they want everything to be given to them on a plate.
Maybe the average iq in the US just Low. I think it's below 100. But the brainwash strong there though. I mean it's kind of like religion or politics. When the belief intersects with their feelings, they most likely won't reflect and agree with logic.
Of course outcome shouldn't be given on a plate, but outcome absolutely matters. If women, men or any group are getting a worse outcome then it needs to be adressed.
For example, male suicide rates are a lot higher, despite men and women having equal rights and access to psychological/psychiatric help ( and DESPITE the fact women's troubles tend to be dismissed as irrational, overall health not taken seriously, look it up).
Nevertheless, isn't men's outcome concering? Similar to women having worse outcomes in other areas.
Upload again...use a better volume.
From "Equal rights" to "We don't need men" as a 35 y/o man I witnessed all the waves of feminism.
What's wrong with women being independent from men? Men were always 100% independent from women and it worked for them.
No one's saying men aren't needed in society. But that an INDIVIDUAL woman doesn't necessarily need a man in her life to achieve her goals and happiness.
@@Luna-ux9by you know nothing kid.....In India when a ngo that work's for men's mental and physical health proposed a national comission for men for India and took it to the supreme court a GROUP OF 100 FEMINISTS opposed it for no reason. Feminism is all about downgrading men nowadays

@@Luna-ux9bymost people will be in a relationship with a man at some point in their life, most women will need help form a man at some points in their life. @@jonasg.bisgaard1086 You completely missed the point.
Wow, this is *incredible*. The moment we stop looking at our movements for equality critically is the moment we start to lose the battle. Brava.
Several issues of logic and content here. 1) Many times more women die from domestic violence than men in the world. This is an indisputable statistical fact. Does this mean feminists go around calling all women -in general -victims? No. 2) One of the pillars of feminism is that women are overly sexualized and objectified. This lecture confuses a cultural issue or the influence of Hollywood for feminism. Uneducated Hollywood celebrities and behavioural trends in young women are obviously no source for what is modern feminism. Are there problems with modern feminism? Yes. But this talk did a bad job of addressing them.
I totally agree, she had some great points towards the end but a lot of confusion and generalisation.
This statement is a great example of exactly the mindset she was addressing, with her challenge to feminists who position women as uniquely victimized more so than men. Sure, many times more women die from domestic violence. But on the other hand, exponentially more men die from war than women. Many many times more men are incarcerated. Something like 92% of all workplace injuries and deaths are of men. The majority of homeless people are men. So to her point, unfortunately, there is plenty of pain and suffering to go around and women need to stop making a unique claim to it.
@@denisemewbourne6976 You are comparing apples to oranges. Men commit more crime, particularly violent crime, that is why more are in jail. Men traditionally chose riskier (better paid) professions. Men volunteer to go into the military in the West. These are choices, sometimes on a societal level. None of these things does anything to refute my criticism of this video. In fact, it goes to show how desperate some people are to deny how male violence is still a huge problem.
I love her speech...
Someone needs to tell her the difference between correlation and causation
Why do liberals hate facts
Soooooo true! 🤣
Yeah her brain isn't really braining...
Was looking for some genuine criticism of feminism but I guess I'm out of luck 🙁
Real women are those who have guts to say these on camera.
I'm so confused. Because she don't talk about the things feminism really fights for, but about the things that are popularized by media which feeds on drama.
Then what do feminism really fight for?
Exactly. It was an incredibly weak and biased presentation that instantly reeked of religious brainwashing for me. Sure enough when I googled her ‘raised in a Christian household’ pops up. I knew before it ended. It’s almost like it was done at the request of her pastor it was so bad.
It didn’t speak about feminism at all.
@@FionaColquhoun-st6mn I wanna know about the goal of feminism. Cuz modern feminism is different for different people without a clear defined goal. I do support 2nd wave feminism but not the modern. Tell me about the goals of the modern one

One myth she missed, that children will bring most woman more happiness than any career job or venture.
Kids sont bring happiness if you are broke , because being broke makes any problème much worse
You are speaking propaganda.
Women don't need children to be happy.
Of course I respect everyone's choice and I understand why parenthood is meaning of life to many people, but you are dead wrong if you say women NEED to sacrifice their carees, hobbies and everything that previously made them happy for children because it's what they are SUPPOSED to do.
If a woman has kids its fine. If a woman doesn't have kids its also fine. Both choices are VALID.
And some women are legitimately miserable being mothers and were never meant to be mother, but found out when it was too late. Women need to be informed of the decision theyre making, the risks of pregnancy, childbirth, post partum depression, sacrificing your life for another life.
Yess queen. Keep up the good work, imbokoto🇿🇦❤🔥🔥.
This talk is right, yet so wrong. Right if aimed at a Western female audience. Wrong and horribly dismissive if targeted towards women living under poverty and oppression in third world nations and religious states. There's nothing empowering about their lives. People throw in stats all the time to spit 'facts' but facts in fact lie in between the lines.
I am gonna have a debate tomorrow between traditional and modern feminism , am defintely gonna be for traditional feminism. Can any body tell me a country who supports traditional feminism??
The simple fact that more boys are born than girls, yet in the West, by the age of 40, there are more women than men. Why? Because men are much more likely to die from crime or suicide or accidents on building sights, or as police, firefighters and men in the armed forces. Girls are better educated because we have gone from 60% female teachers in 1974 to 96% female teachers in 2019. Education has been feminized, with the lack of male teachers and lack of fathers involvement in their kids, young boys are adrift.
This is the most beautiful speech that I have heard a women give another women in a very very long time 🙌🏻🙌🏻🥰🥰 congratulations
I don't like modern feminism but this woman makes many bad points and they are poorly backed.
I though so too. She mentions that there are more male victims of violence but doesn’t mention who those acts of violence are committed by (men), which is probably due to toxic masculinity. More women are likely to suffer from domestic violence which is also due to toxic masculinity, toxic masculinity comes from the patriarchy and what is trying to stop the patriarchy? Feminism.
@@bule678men are the most victims of non-reciprocal domestic violence almost twice as women.
Something seems a bit odd about the facts that women have earned more Bachelor's degrees than men for 30 years and yet occupy only 7% of top management positions. Can lack of ambition explain this huge discrepancy? Or perhaps the discrepancy is a sign that the deck is severely stacked against women, and they are responding to this by getting degrees in greater numbers.
But 87% of homeless in UK (Office for national statistics 2018) are men and 94% of all work place deaths are male (USA figure around 5000 per year).... see no point throwing out different stats about different things....0.0001% of people are in top management positions, the break down of male and female is independant of bachelor degrees or other things
In my final year in university we had 2 women in my field. Both married and got kids soon after they graduated. None ever worked in the field she studied for - which, in one case - is actually a loss because she was really, really good.
Bachelors Degrees for Arthritis.
Bad degrees. Can't do much with a degree in women's studies. And I know lots who end up staying home after having a family. The deck isn't stacked against women. If they want, they can rise in the ranks. If they embrace victimhood, they always have an excuse. Excuses get you nowhere. After I had my kids, work wasn't as important. I'm a manager now, but not sure I really want to be due to time commitments and kids activities. I like the pay though.
There are some 150 generally more degrees for women than men, many of them, like gender studies, is highly irrelevant and pretty unapplicable to most of society. College has, as an institution, taken advantage of a mindset that is nothing more than a bunch of women being duped by salesmen.
I. ABSOLUTELY. LOVE. THIS.
Same!
I think the topic was "My thoughts on feminism" not "my thoughts on women"
Straight up quoted the bible... beautiful
Equality of opportunity- yes
Equality of outcome- NO
Abide by that? Go crazy. I will applaud your success.
Talking about the rates of murder between men and women and forgetting to men who the murders are committed by is very disingenuous especially when talking about South Africa.
Totally….. one and the MANY omissions and oversights of this talk.
The talks are highly inspiring
While I don’t exactly agree with everything she presented, I do feel it’s important to listen and acknowledge different views on what feminism is and what it means to others.
This needed a disclaimer because??
Separating young people from friends and family makes them more dependent on a movement or "religion"
I have a lot of questions
Let's here talk about it when women are being drafted for war.
Equity (equality of outcome) and diversity are absurd goals. Equality of opportunity is all that is needed. Everything else must fall in place organically based on human nature.
tradtypes acting like ''old school feminism'' was not hated lmao
Look at the old anti-feminism propaganda posters. It was hated from the start.
Sadly, modern feminism isn't really achieving anything ☹️ just pushing men and women further apart. But her arguments are really bad yeah.
@@Luna-ux9bybecause many people who are apart of the feminism movement act like men are the problem, and that everything wrong in their life is because the world is against them.
Feminism is not egalitarianism.
I think the issue when talking about gender-based violence, from both feminists and non-feminists, is how we frame it. Globally, and in many countries, there are more male victims of violence, but who is committing it all and what are the circumstances? Men are more likely to get into violent altercations as a result of pressures to embrace toxic masculinity. Women are also more likely to experience domestic violence, again as a result of toxic masculinity. So yes, women are not super-victims, but gender politics and feminism are still relevant.
Minus the simplistic criticisms of "modern feminism" some nice words of encouragement for girls.
The western woman has become so obnoxiously childish and uncomfortable. This poor lady is sweating balls just to say the bare minimum. And TedX needed a diclaimer to protect themselves from today's women.
