They have a purpose in the context of that original version of the game, yes. The remake achieves the same tension in gameplay with its modern control scheme by reworking the enemies to match the player's pace. I'd argue the remake is still pretty cheesy as well, though it does tone down certain specific sections. As for the graphics, obviously a modern game isn't going to look like one from 2005, but the art design and visual language is very much intact in RE4 remake in my opinion.

@@SriMJ54 no one finds the flirting offensive, just out of place in the new canon and the character's personalities. It fits well in the og because of the whole cheesiness and campy theme of the game. Instead, 4remake has some subtle flirtings between Ashley and Leon, so subtle it flew above a lot of players' heads. The haunting ground could have a remake if there are enough demands, its unfortunate that its a bit niche because its not your typical survival horror. One of those things is not like the other. FF7 was a pre-sequel disguised as a remake.
FF2 “part 2” will be one hell of a trip. It’s undoubted that we are witnessing the end result of the FF7 expanded universe (crisis core, dirge of Cerberus, Advent children, etc).
So while Remake 2 is a game that is self contained yet still explains the most important events of Re2.
FF7R is a result of a lot of other games and years of expansion. By the time the 3 games are out we won’t see a “remake” of the original FF7 but the end of the series… hopefully.

@@josetomascamposrobledano4618 RE2 remake is completely different experience to RE2 ps1 and FF7 ps1 is completely different experience to FF7 remake. Whereas RE4 remake is not really that big of a different experience from RE4 original. Thats all I meant really.

@@Nigel222 I get it and it’s true at first glance. But people who follow FF7 are a bit divided because whispers and the “changing future” ending is a slap in the face to people who thought they would reexperience FF7. Something I personally don’t mind cause I played FF7 OG.
But on the other hand Remake 2 might be fundamentally different on gameplay, it still touches the most important enemies, areas and PLOT POINTS.
So what I’m saying is that I always feel weird when I see FF7R in the “Remakes” discussion.
Because while the title says one thing, the game we got bamboozled the fan base because it will most likely be “it’s own thing” despite the fact we all expect to revisit the lost city of the ancients, Costa del Sol and the Gold Saucer.
We will visit the locations but the context and the story of Cloud and Sephiroth are a lot different than what we saw in FF7 OG.
That’s all I gotta say. While I should expect FF7R to still appear on Remake discussions, I do hope that isn’t the case with the next 2 sequels to that game.

The only remake I respect and support is the RE1 remake for the GameCube. Reason? To surpass tech limitations, improve pacing, and include ideas that couldn’t make the Final Cut of the 96 release. The resulting remake with the series vet and gaming legend: Shinji Mikami is nothing short of breathtaking. Zero cut content and brand new mechanics like the knife plus the ingenious crimson heads took the game from a 9 to a 10. Nothing reaches this level of love and craftsmanship, because these reimaginings conveniently cut what they want. I love the RE2 remake, but hot damn…the B scenario sucked. RE3 remake is a pointless cash grab, like TLoU remaster and the even more egregious remake.
In short, I don’t really think any game should be remade. Not Dino Crisis, not Thief, not Tenchu…as much as I love them. The era is gone, so make new games inspired by the old to break barriers instead of making interactive movies and storefronts to sell microtransactions. Let’s go back to 1998-2007. How many games were remade? People took risks and created genres back then. Fast forward to 2023 that some consider the best year in gaming…haha! Games running for the GOTY so far are the RE4 remake, Dead Space remake and Metroid Prime Remastered that’s almost a remake. I think Silent Hill 2 remake and System shock remake are also supposed to drop this year.

With the Gamecube's added processing, the RE1 remake was what he envisioned the original RE1 to be like. And honestly it's still my favorite Resident Evil remake. It literally took the story, atmosphere, gameplay, everything and added to it. More rooms and areas were added to the existing Spencer Mansion that it all felt natural. New enemies were added, gameplay mechanics were added and enemy placement mixed just enough to throw players of the psx RE1 off. Even the dialogue is mostly the same, but is acted out better and reworked just enough that it isn't as cringey as the original dialogue.

@@micpere1991 If that was going to be your response, then you should have replied to OP. That said, I wish Motive had the same mentality to Dead Space remake, but instead they wanted to turn it into a Modern Woke Space 2.0 (a less polished game somehow than DS2)... Pure modern aiming shooting system (at least DS2 AND DS3 had optional classic aiming), "auto-aim" kinesis lmao (no other DS game has that nonsense), heavier expository storytelling, identity politics everywhere (character designs, main dialogue, environments, both video and text logs-w/pronouns, etc), zombies now but some with bladed arms, less grotesque design all around, and the list goes on. All these videos on Yt praising the remake's direction (and worse wanting these dudes to seriously tackle an official Dead Space 4) is more insane than anything that's happened in DS's lore. Great video with good production value. I feel a good example of how to not remaster games is Halo CE Anniversary. Halo CE Anniversary is bad, not only do I think it looks worse than the original but it actively detracts or misses the points of some levels from a visual perspective. The easy example of this is the 6th mission of the game, 343 Guilty Spark. The original game had little lighting as the level was meant to make the player uneasy. The lighting was important because he threw the player off their guard. You weren’t just running and gunning through enemies. The lighting was dark, enemies sparse in the beginning. You see figures in the distance watching you, but you can’t get a good look. The beginning of the level works as a scary introduction to the Flood. However in the Remaster the lighting is very bright so you can see clearly that the figures watching you are flood. Ruining the any tension, it’s no longer a walk through a creepy unsettling swamp. It’s just very visually boring snd ruins the experience.

    • @UnchainedEruption
      @UnchainedEruption 3 месяца назад

I agree CE is a bad remaster, but not because the graphics weren’t good. They were. Different art style of course may or may not appeal to you; that is subjective. What isn’t subjective is that the last third of the game is literal ass. The Library is notoriously the worst FPS level of all time. The next level is an earlier level done back to front. It’s pretty much all filler levels and recycled content till the end once you reach that point. Nothing new to experience after you meet the flood. What they should’ve done instead is either severely cut that endless repetitive filler, or better yet completely change the sections and introduce their own level design with new enemies and new terrain. My problem with CE is it was too faithful to the original game, perfectly replicating all the shitty parts. A real wasted opportunity to fix the game’s gaping flaws and make the end of the game just as good as the earlier sections.

While I totally see your point and I completely agree with it, let me try to explain a bit the whole The Last Of Us Remastered ( I'm talking about the 2014 one for ps4) situation. Ps4 was not backward compatible with PS3 titles, and TLOU was the peak of that console in terms of... pretty much everything. Also, back in the day, a LOT of people bought a PS4 instead of an X Box One because Sony sold it 100 dollars/euros less than Microsoft ( remember the whole kinect fiasco?). Many long time X box fans jumped ship and bought a PS4 instead of a XO. And those new players had the perfect chance to play TLOU for the first time with the remaster. Sony capitalized on these aspects. That's why I see this move more logical and justified than others. STILL, they sold it at full price, IIRC. Great video and great editing

The gaming industry has always been super greedy from the arcade boom into the various console wars! But, one thing so many people tend to forget believe it or not but, prices of home console games has never really changed since the boom of the 8bit era video games ran $40-$50 a pop from 1985/1986 the MSRP in North America has barley went up over 38yrs the software has gotten better and better but, the price is still sort of cheap! i’m all for remakes/remasters if it’s a IP that deserves a 2nd go (Alan Wake & Bulletstorm, Lollipop Chainsaw are (3) of the most underrated games of the 7th Generation each title deserve more mainstream success! Destroy all Humans 1&2 benefited from a proper Remake both game’s really impressive for what they are…. The Condemned & Fear Series would be excellent remakes along with Spec Ops: The Line (Which is hands down one of the absolute best story driven games in the last 25yrs its very honest about War with a very smart social commentary) gameplay is sub par but, the story is the draw (Spec Ops: The Line deserves mainstream redemption critics loved it gamers however passed on it 😢

I think it's a mostly awesome game, but I just didn't enjoy the whole multiverse/meta commentary angle that's gotten way too trendy nowadays. And by shuffling things around too much like that, it kinda detracts from what made that world and story so gripping and unique. One central theme in the original was the tragedy and acceptance of death, so I feel like introducing a multiverse of sorts into that kind of narrative, where different versions of events and people are potentially infinite, makes death inconsequential and it feels pointless to be invested in anything. Especially with how many "fake-out deaths" this first installment alone had (another annoying trend seen mostly in serialized television). That said, I totally get why people loved it. They did flesh out some side characters a lot more and made Midgar more dense with new content, but I still prefer the original.

It’s just that its new direction with the story and writing is a rather divisive topic among its community but I hear that the new gameplay is good. I do agree with the first reply’s argument that trying to introduce an entire multiverse/multiple timelines in a story that was defined by its theme of death, tragedy, and loss risks making said central trait of its identity feel pointless in the end. I mean, why care if a character dies when they’re completely fine and alive in another timeline because multiple timelines are confirmed to exist now? That probably gives the writing even more of an opportunity to pull a bunch of fake out deaths or whatever.

    • @UnchainedEruption

@@IconEnjoyer That’s not always true. Sometimes the originals get removed from digital storefronts, or hidden so that they don’t appear in search results (2011 Skyrim), or they don’t go on sale anymore to push the new game. Alternatively, for online games, having two copies of the same game means the playerbase is split. This hurts the existing online community, which is probably pretty small to begin with in old games. It may get a temporary bump at first from renewed interest, but after the novelty dies the playerbase will be even smaller than before.
What about preserving games for posterity? Most people assume newer versions are the best, but that’s often not the case. The original gets forgotten to history, while the newer becomes the definitive for better or worse. It is a kind of whitewashing or rewriting of recent history, and a part of our culture dies with it.

Good video. I agree with you substantially. I generally hate most remakes and remasters, because I am of the strong belief that old, dated games should look and feel dated, because in that way they serve as a time capsule of when they came out, and give younger generations some way to experience that now. It preserves history. However, I am not against the occasional remake or remaster.
Like you said, RE 2 is the gold standard. Granted I’ve not played any RE games before it, and likely wouldn’t have if not for the remake, but what makes it valid for me is the fact that it isn’t just a graphics upgrade, but a totally different experience (and a great one at that.) It is simultaneously faithful while still being a completely different game.
Movie remakes used to happen every once in a while, and what makes a movie remake good is when it doesn’t try to completely imitate the source material but when it intentionally reinvents the wheel. Like a good cover song, how Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower” is radically different from the Bob Dylan original. For example, the Charlie’s Angels movies in the early 00s with Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu reimagined and modernized the original 70s tv show, and actually outshined its source material. The Tom Cruise remake of the 60s Mission Impossible series is great because it doesn’t try to replace the original but do its own take in it.
A video game remake, therefore, should try to be faithful to the spirit of the original, while still being a completely different experience. A perfect example is the Doom series. Doom 3 was a reboot or remake of the original DOS masterpieces that is just as brilliant. It’s the same basic game, but totally different. Much more grounded and realistic, and it takes the horror vibe up to 11. The series was rebooted yet again in 2016, going in the total opposite direction, with minimalistic, cheesy almost plot, but delivering excellent arcadey arena gameplay. And its sequel, the loose reboot of Doom II, known as Doom Eternal, is perhaps the most innovative FPS since Half Life 2. It inspired not only other games such as Shadow Warrior 3, but also spawned a whole music genre known as “Argent Metal.”
However, too often the thought process behind game remakes is, “Keep it exactly the same, just make it look like it came out today.” If that is the reason alone, then it is a bad reason. Especially for games that came out in the Xbox 360 generation or later, since graphics already look very realistic by that point. It is a waste of time and resources, and frankly insulting to the original. If you can compare a remake or a remaster to the original, and they’re close enough in art style and gameplay that you wouldn’t buy it if you had the first one, then it’s a bad remake*. (Last of Us PS4 edition is an exception, because its existence has less to do with the slight graphical update and more to do with the fact that the game came out at the very end of the PS3’s life cycle, so they wanted a version for the PS4 market.)
Many old school FPS games from the DOS era, like Shadow Warrior (1997) for e.g., are literally just a source port, the kind of thing modders make for free. Asking people to pay money for a source port is ridiculous, especially when the original Shadow Warrior and its expansion were legally released already for free.
Another huge sin is when remasters needlessly make the file size way bigger for negligible changes in graphics you can’t even notice. The Borderlands 2 HD pack adds 10 GB for no reason. Halo 2 and Battlefront 2 have their file sizes 5-10x larger!
The Call of Duty and Crysis Remasters are the most laughable imo, because not only were the originals known for excellent graphics that obviously still look amazing today, but in some cases the originals actually look much better than the remaster! Crysis 2 remaster actually looks worse! But even if it didn’t, Crysis was known to have graphics ahead of its time. If there’s one series that didn’t need a remaster, that was it!

RE3R was made by a contractor. Capcom will not repeat that mistake. As for remakes in general, the Capcom way makes the most sense. The RE franchise dates back to the mid-90s and spans several console generations. Game design as well as hardware has since evolved by leaps and bounds. The franchise was losing its way until RE7, when Capcom returned RE to its horror roots. Remaking major titles in the franchise makes the overall story arch more cohesive.

I would say that the only problem is, is that a remake can not 100% hit every single point of nostalgia. The only way that they could do that is to make a new engine that almost replicates the original, and do a remaster. So even though Resident evil 2,4, and Final fantasy 7 remakes are amazing and I love all 3 of them, they make the Original games still very good as they just don't have all the same content. That is why the Resident evil 1 HD ''remake'' is hailed as the king of ''remakes'' because in reality its just a remaster, with added content. WITH THAT BEING SAID!!! My problem with remakes is that they not only keep us stuck in the past, but they overshadow the original game's legacy.
When people think of RE1 or RE4 being the pioneers of their respective genres, they're going to think of the remakes more so than the original, even though without the original, the remakes would not exist.
On top of that, remaking a game that was already good to begin with into something potentially inferior or slightly better gains little value. I think more value is gained when remaking a bad game into a good one, something that may or may not happen with Lords of the Fallen.
I also did not like the remake of RE4. It's a good game don't get me wrong but the original had much better game design, pacing, cutscenes, and a sense of campiness that's just gone in the remake.

The new remakes are good games in their own right but its like some of the devs and even the fans who talk about the remakes over the OGs are somehow ashamed of the b-movie aspects of the series and how ridiculous and over the top it can be, it feels like much of what makes Resident Evil as a series is being removed for the sake of "realism".... In a perfect timeline, 2 and 3 were remade like i said in the first comment and they would have also found a way to integrate OTS in 1R as an option without changing anything else.

@@AndreiCatalin42069 Understand. However, given Capcom’s style of reimagining, the shark section and maybe even Lisa Trevor may be out. I’m liking the RE4 remake as a huge fan of the OG, but just nuking “It”/U3 just to likely add him back as paid DLC in Ada’s campaign just sucks. It’s something that the fans of the remake embrace with open arms. Still miles better than the FF7 remake bs to have multiple games cover one I guess.
Couldn’t agree more on the ideal remake scenarios you stated.

Has anyone noticed that when doing comparison pieces between The Last of Us show and the game, people are ALWAYS using the Remake footage? That right there explains why Naughty Dog made the decision. It wasn't because the game was old, or because it needed it. It wasn't even to be 'more in line with Pt 2' like Neil Druckmann claimed. It was because it would look nicer for the video clips, once the HBO show came out.
I have a big problem with remakes, like this, when it adds no tangible value. Remasters are less annoying, but they were a problem when they seemed to be all anyone was putting out, while players patiently waited for new games on their console.

Kiwami 1 maybe, but 2 is not a great remake far from it, cutting areas, slow and clunky feeling combat compared to Kiwami 1 which imporved the combat massively from 0, K2 feels like a step down from 6's combat and it has an ugly filter which hides the beauty of the Dragon Engine.

To be fair with FF7 Remake...while the game remade the first portion of the original..the term "remake" actually describes the actions of a character in the game....the intent of FF7 Remake is to actually be a sequel to the original while also introducing new players to the franchise

Great video, yea Remakes Are risky for sure it is very easy To butcher them or make them feel Very Crash grabby with little to no love or passion put in (LOU1 or The GTA remasters) but when it's done right? Like Dead Space or RE1,2&4? It's Masterclass.
I'll be Honest RE4R is not only the best Remake ever made IMHO (slightly edging out over RE1R that game is also an absolute masterpiece) but I also think RE4R actually improved itself over almost every aspect of the OG (cept maybe the Charm and Old Ada VA) and thus I currently view RE4R as my new #1 fav Game of all time (was DMC5) I seriously think it's a Monumental Game same as the OG was.
RE2R is also Phenomenal and Is my #2 fav RE game,
Dead Space Remake I'm surprised was as good as it was as well, Only other game I felt was a Solid remake was Demons Souls On PS5 but that game def messed up in some Art direction and Music choices.
Honestly after seeing how master class RE4R is I am actually kinda interested in a RE5R and if they can Make that one actually have Horror vibes lol, That said I'd much much prefer Capcom either
    A. Make RE9 First
B.make Code Veronica Remake before 5R
C.make DMC1 or DMC3 remake (love the devil May cry series lol)
    Or D. Remake Dino Crisis!!!!
I only bring up 5R cause 4R ending heavily hints towards that being remade in the future.
Anyways again Great video! I'm at point rn I only have full confidence in remakes done by Capcom and Motive cause of Dead space lol

1:26 Not every time good sir I RE3-Make is still fresh. Also RE2-make although 2make is mechanically excellent (other than a dodge feature as needed for those bosses) and it was visually stunning and created a phenomenal atmosphere, the gutted the story of RE2 when you compare the two, so many plot beats and character interactions where lost making the game feel very narrow and shallow narratively overall. Not to mention how they butchered the A, B paths.
As for your changing things argument. I agree its tough I'd argue some games don't need any real changes just a remodel and new textures and you still have a near perfect game RE4 as an example to keep it capcom. This isn't saying RE 4-make is bad it is great for what It goes for, but it does fundamentally change the experience of the original. I honestly think the remake cleans up some story beats quite well but it also changes and cripples some character dynamics and interactions, by changing dialogue and removing some scenes entirely . Then also how you meet some characters, some now have less presence and set up because you see them less.

I would say for me, that, Re 1 remake for the game cube and Re 2 remake is the best of all time. They've effectively added more intrigue & lore and managed to update the visual from an older era and tech, while providing a fresh experience to older fans and new comers alike.
