    I think the reason developers keep putting random other words in the titles instead of "remake" is because they want their games to stand out.

  • @NachtKaiser666

    I usually classify games of this kind in two categories:
    1-Remake. A remake is, as the name implies, a game remade from the ground up. It can have brand new gameplay and new content, but it usually follows tge same basic plot as the original with maybe slight divergences to keep it fresh for fans of the previous incarnation. (See Star Ocean 2 R)
    2- Remaster and Enhanced Remaster. It's like a port, but with higher resolution and fixed bugs. Sometimes there will be retranslations or redubs, but overall a remaster is just a port on a more recent console. Where this gets interesting is when they add new content and quality of life updates to a remaster. Nothing that could qualify the game as a remake, but enough to say it's not the exact same game, that's what makes an enhanced remaster. That's the one that confuses too many people. (See Ys VIII for PS5 as a remaster and SaGa Frontier Remastered for an enhanced remaster)
    Admittedly I could have separated remaster and enhanced remaster, but you get the idea.

      However there are still games (mostly from Japanese studios) that dont conform to those expectations. You mentioned theme yourself, Remasters that also do new content. Thiese types of remasters (mainly from Japanese studios) as they want to make a better package but they also want to implement ideas that were scrapped in the original game OR want to link the series better (Xenoblade Remasters come to mind with the Future Connected extra stuff). These also feel like the old expansions in some way.
      Lastly there are the games that are both & something more as well. FF7 Remake comes to mind, as it is also a sequel of sorts. This type of game is the most interesting of all, because it compliments the original, especially in the story department.

    What you said at the end was exactly my thoughts going through the video. The confusion seems to go unaddressed because all it did was generate extra revenue for games people assumed were remade in full vs. re-touched/remasters that might end up being a bit of a downgrade in some cases if they weren't ambitious enough. Hell, I've seen comments from people in the past that thought a mere port to a more powerful console would somehow result in better A.I. for the game's enemies. When people don't know much, there's a LOT they can be unclear on.

    I don't think you should have removed it. I, for one, would have never added Live-A-Live in my wishlist if it wasn't for that video. Stick to your definition and let the crowd educate themselves and have their own opinions. Worst case scenario, you can do an updated version in the future by removing Replicant or Xenoblade and just leave the purely remade ones. And you are right, there are NOT many remakes.

    Trying to categorize things as Remake or Remaster just doesn't really work anymore. Xenoblade DE isn't a Remake cause it isn't 100% new, but so many things are completely remade, buncha people argue Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a "Reimagining" and not a remake since it's so different. I get your frustration but this whole thing is semantics, there isn't really a 100% agreed apon definition of these terms because at the end of the day they are really just marketing terms.

  • @drewtheunspoken3988

    A remaster usually just means cleaning up or enhancing a base experience.
    A remake is taking core principles or basic plot and building a new experience from there.
    For example, if you were to buy The Crow (1994) on 4K Blu-ray, it's upgrading the visuals and soundtrack.
    The (probably) crap 2024 film is a remake.

  • @Phoenixryu

    A remake is a game that was previously released often decades ago being completely remade using the original as its template. A remaster is a game that is often more modern but needs some polish to bring it up to current standards. This polish often includes higher resolutions, frame rate adjustments, bug fixes, and texture corrections among other updates.

  • @AxelsVirtue
    @AxelsVirtue 4 месяца назад +1

    Devs can’t be trusted to determine the difference anyway. Marketing calls blatant remasters “remakes” all the time. Ever since the PS3/360 era.
    Also, Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is obviously a remaster. I don’t know what “lots of added content” you’re talking about but it is a a heck of a lot less than Kingdom Hearts Final Mix which was neither. ACTUAL gray areas would be games like Odin Sphere Leifthrasir and the Mario RPG “remake” where the visuals are redone from the ground up but everything else is clearly still the same game but with a bit of added content or quality of life improvements.
    All that said, this is all really just semantics because there has never ever been an official standard. The only way to do a list like this is by giving a definition at the beginning that would be used as the standard for only the specific list and staying consistent with it.

    • @AxelsVirtue
      @AxelsVirtue 4 месяца назад

      Also, it helps to add a 3rd level that is just enhanced re-release with added content and fixs but not visual improvements taking advantage of more powerful hardware. Sometimes even releasing on the same non-PC platforms as the original. (ala Final Mix, various “International Editions” and Personal 5 Royal)
      All the GBA ports with exclusive content would likely fall into this category as well. Then the gray area would be delayed PC ports that were clearly designed the same as they would be if they were simultaneous multi-platform releases alongside the console versions.

    A remaster is pretty much just a makeover done to the original game. Basically it's what you would expect from a modder such as improve textures, lighting and shaders, performance, aspect ratio, fix bugs, add QoL features, retranslate, even add new artifacts (why not?).
    When it comes to remakes, although some are made to be a whole new re-imagining of the original game like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Trials of Mana etc..., others just want to still be a 1:1 experience of the original such as Mario RPG and Link's Awakening. If you played the new Mario RPG you essentially played the original. If you play FF7 Remake you still did not play the original, and as a matter of fact you shouldn't play it before the original.
    Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is most definitely a remake. It was ported to a newer engine where even the physics changed, although it's still 1:1 faithful to the original. Dragon Quest XI S was also made in a different engine to be able to have it run on the switch. DQ8 for 3DS, although it's a remake, we just call it the 3DS version, and the so-and-so version for similar cases.
    I think the confusion comes for people when games are remade to accomplish the same goal as a remaster, like Xenoblade DE, Daggerfall Unity, and even decompilation projects like Ship of Harkinian, because to someone who just wants a good way to play the original game, what difference does it make?

  • @Dahras1
    @Dahras1 4 месяца назад +2

    So I'm actually a game dev, and I can tell you that Remake and Remaster are pretty much made up marketing terms from an actual implementation level.
    In music, where the terms Remake and Remaster come from, those words have actual technical meaning. A Remake is a full rerecording from ground up and a Remaster uses the original recordings but rebalances levels or refines the track mix.
    In games, that might be analogous to a Remake creating all new assets and reimplementing the engine, with a Remaster basically just being an upscaled port.
    But even then, the line is very blurry. A title like FF7R is a completely new game that has all original gameplay and narrative design on top of new assets and a new engine. Nier Replicant has heavily modified combat and a new additional ending, but the rest of the game's script is nearly identical to the original. Super Mario RPG (2023) is 95% the original gameplay and narrative design, just reimplemented with new assets and a few QOL changes.
    In terms of developer work, those three vary *wildly* . FF7R is a new AAA game and deserves to be priced as such. Nier Replicant localized a previously inaccessible version of the original and did have major design reworks, but also was way easier to work on than a new game where the story/structure is made from scratch. And Super Mario RPG required almost zero narrative or design work compared to an original game, making it vastly easier to produce.
    Personally, I just think that these things need to be taken on a game-by-game basis. There's no easy categorization possible because each remake is too different in terms of scope and difficulty of production. But that's just my 2c.

      @@ivanbluecoolYou have no idea what you're talking about lol. SMRPG goes from using sprites to being completely in 3D, FFVII Remaster barely does anything to touch up the visuals.
      And I would argue SMRPG shouldn't be $60 simply because there's not enough content to justify it. But it absolutely is a remake full stop, no questions asked.
      The only games that are truly debatable are the likes of Xenoblade Chronicles and Metroid Prime. Because they are pretty serious improvements graphically over the originals.
      But they're still just remasters because they haven't changed mediums or graphical styles at all. They just put real effort into touching up the exact original games.
      FFVII Remake is debatable to even call a remake because its not even trying to play like the original games.

    • @ltb1345

    ...isn't a lot of this problem on your end because the terms don't actually have a consistent definition as they are mainly used for marketing...
    If I want to be pedantic, going by actual definitions, all remasters are remakes, however, all remakes are not remasters. The actual term for what Star Ocean and Final Fantasy are is a reimagining.
    Its safe to say something like Final Fantasy 7 is a reimagining as everything has changed, and likewise something that just updates the graphics is a remaster... but often this isn't how things are done. Often new features are added in addition to improved graphics. Likewise, code may be adjusted. As a result, a the original gameplay may not actually exist and the game ultimately plays differently. At a certain point we run into an issue akin to the Ship of Theseus if one thinks about it.
    Lets look at the 'remaster' that is Final Fantasy 1.
    Graphics? Those are 100% different.
    Script? That's been changed.
    Battle system? Auto-targeting alone completely changes the challenge level, need for thought, risk management, and so on. Then there are the spell fixes and whatnot...
    Code? LOTS of updates there.
    So how is Final Fantasy 1 a remaster? Its not really the same game. Its just true to the original.
    We ultimately run into an issue akin to the Ship of Theseus when analyzing it.
    Regularly remasters/remakes have various adjustments. Sometimes its something visual we can see. Sometimes its extra features. Other times its code we can't see. Then at times its adjustments to the story.
    Personally, I don't consider the PS1 version and above to be the same version as the SNES version of Final Fantasy 6 because of how different the gameplay challenge is, with the PS1 version and above actually having less difficulty despite the claim of devs. (Who also admit to fixing evasion bugs in the same statements.)

    If you can compare screenshots to show how much better the new one looks, it's a remaster. Remaster = much less effort than a remake. Adding polish = remaster. Painting your house is a remaster; tearing down walls to make some rooms bigger = a remake. Part of the confusion comes from the fact that producers will often add new chapters, new characters, etc. to what is otherwise clearly just a remaster.

      The only time I accept that is with things like kingdoms of amalur. Because the fact that anyone picked up that IP and put it out again, was a miracle. I pray that THQ does a sequel it deserves it.
      While the remastered part wasn't great but they did do an entire new expansion, so I will take it

    • @nhlcbj

      @@jonathansoko1085 that’s fair. Ports in and of themselves aren’t the issue, it’s the ones like the battlefront games or gta trilogy that aren’t optimized and are so broken at release yet sold for ridiculous prices. Rockstar is worse in that sense since they took down the steam versions and mod support for that game. Say what you will about Rebirth but after playing it I have no doubt it was made as a labor of love and not just to make a quick buck.

    Honestly - who cares?
    These definitions mean very little. People have to play the game and see for themselves.
    Honestly, people are already OK with the definition of "buying" being ascribed to a process of renting a temporary license enabling access to a given content.
    So, yeah, "remake" vs "remaster" seems like a petty rant if anything.

    If a game is the same in gameplay and/or narrative it's a remake, otherwise it's just a remaster; or in some cases I add a third option and call it a graphical overhaul, which is still a remaster but it adds specifics on what was done to update it.
    For example I'd call Leifthrasir a remake, since you cannot play the original the same way as the update; Trials of Mana would be graphical overhaul remaster, since aside from small qol changes, the game is no different from the original aside from graphics.

    • @JaidynReiman
      @JaidynReiman 4 месяца назад

      Trials of Mana barely plays the same as the original game. It went from being a 2D action RPG to a 3D one, that's a massive shift. All the maps have been completely remade from the ground up.
      The story is the same as is structure, but gameplay wise it is significantly different.
      SMRPG is closer to the origine game than Trials of Mana because SMRPG did its best to keep the original viewpoint as close to the original as possible despite shifting into 3D, but the original was already an isometric game anyway.
      They're both remakes.
