the reason those older snes games are not on metacritic is they pre-date metacritic. metacritic only started during the ps1 era so a lot of snes games don't have pages.

Star Ocean 5 being on that list kinda annoys me. I really like that game. Cross Edge's score on the other hand is still rated too high. Expecting a Dark Rose Valkyrie style retraction coming for that whenever you actually play this for longer than a couple of hours.

30:58 I played Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity. It's an action RPG which I could consider similar to a Ys game with Ys VI engine. The attacks are somehow based on the attacks from the main games, but it's definitely not as chaotic for the eyes as a bullet hell can be. Actually the gameplay is fun. Only issue is the camera because it's too far away sometimes and so not easy to see the safe spots. Also it's on the short side, but it has replaybility by having two playable characters.
New World, a pseudo sequel, came out last year which has a few gameplay improvements like flesh guard.
I'd rank the first game a 6.5 and the second one 7.5, definitely no bad games, however not recommendable for people who aren't familar with the series.

The only game i've played and completed recently was Caligula Effect Overdose, whilst i wouldn't say it was an amazing game, it wasn't as bad as some say. The combat whilst initially looks convuluted, it's actually pretty easy to get to grips with, what you actually do first, you are in essence seeing how the attack may play out, it doesn't always go to plan, but you are essentially just reviewing what will happen with your selection, if you don't like what you are seeing you can alter it. Rinse and repeat with your squad characters then see how it plays out.

Metacritic launched in 2001, and I believe has listings for titles ranked on Gamerankings merged in (launched 99, merged in 2019). So titles earlier than that won't be on there unless they got a re-release.

    • @monopoman

I didn't expect to see Amazing Island here, more for categorical reasons. I feel like Stephenplays' first experience with the game in his Extra Life streams nicely illustrates the insanity of this game. Probably not a blast to play, but definitely a blast to watch someone play. XD
Crystal Chronicles original was pretty unique and very nice, but its hardware gambit made it tough to experience properly, and it had the weirdest quirk where its save system was REALLY hard to remember to use. Like we'd forget to save all the frikkin' time even though generally, I save as often as I can in most games. The newer release had some issues that it really shouldn't have had, from what I've heard.

That's because the scores means something different for everyone. Some people use 7/10 as average, while others would say 5/10 is average.

I think one of the biggest reasons people have issues with metacritic is because they don’t just collate reviews. Having multiple review score methods isn’t really an issue, you can generally break those down into percentages and find an average. The issue with metacritic is they use a weighted scoring metric. So while they are collating scores from many critics, certain critics are weighted higher meaning their score counts for more. It should just be an average because a review is an opinion and no opinion should be weighted higher than another when it comes to media reviews.

    • @namelessgary643
      @namelessgary643 5 месяцев назад +1

If I’m not mistaken, open critic gives a real average. They don’t weight the reviews that come to their platform. Which should give you a more accurate view compared to metacritic.

Well, Hyperdimension Neptunia was the FIRST game in the series. The combat was extremely slow, but they learned from it. HN Mk2 (the second) was much better, but still had some flaws....which only got improved in the third game, HN Victory. You can't bash the first game in the series to harshly because, well, it the first game in the series.
Omega Quintet is alright for me...but it's grindy as hell, for Leveling, Material Farming, and, worse of all....Weapon Proficiency (which actually increased the stats of the weapons for that same class.)
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered...is bad because it was released on consoles AND Mobile...meaning the console versions were also the MOBILE versions. That's why it's got bad reviews.

Congratulations to Eric on 100K subs!
Such an unfortunately terrible name for a game. As long as it's just a name, I guess you could just never say it out loud lol; but if the game has the cutesy stuff that the name would suggest, that alone makes it a pass.
The actual gameplay I've seen doesn't make me any more interested. Triangle strategy got a pass, because although terrible, the name made sense; and although the gameplay got really tedious after awhile, the story was good enough to push through at least once.
UO seems to me, from what I've seen, to be a JRPG, that also has strategy. At least it's not the yawn inducing classic JRPG combat, but there's still too much of the busywork that, to me, drags that entire genre down.
The combat seems decent enough, that maybe if it was ONLY combat with occasional story beats; or, if the story was really good, I could understand the sudden obsession with the game.
But I guess it's just one of those games that I'm never going to understand why it's so beloved.
Idk... There's games that are pretty good, but are way over hyped, with love for the game bordering on obsession: something like Elden Ring; that I'll never understand why people get so obsessed. Solid game, but it's not "the greatest game ever".
But in UO's case, I don't get why it's liked at all. Maybe the full game is way different than the demo... But from the demo alone, I don't get it.

Mass Effect review is a mostly a product of the Rushed Ending. They released better endings & more options, but the damage had already been done. The Endings were still problematic, but they werent as bad as before. In general ME3 lost a lot of ME2 writers & the lead writer tried to make the focus on his own plot points, leading to some aspects falling a little flat (villains are a bit one-dimensional etc). I would say that the big problem is the missed potential, because they had an interesting world but they sort of closed that potential with the endings.

Valkyria Revolution was trashed only because this is not like Valkyria Chronicles, even if this game is just a spin-off. And I agree, game is not great, have terrible balance and gameplay issues (grind, difficulty spikes, repetive combat and maps, attack of clones), but story, music and character development in this game is really good. If you play this game more like Visual Novel, it is OK game, just gameplay in this game is not that good. And this is the biggest issue not only this game, but also all games from this genre - Visual Novel RPG's.
