Advance Wars Dual Strike had a leveling system, making it slightly more rpg like, but yeah they are strategy games at the core.
Absolutely. A stretch to call it an rpg. If that's an rpg then let's add call of duty to the genre
FF Tactics Advance is an isekai with a protagonist who doesn't want the escapism from being in a different world. It's story is surprisingly mature for the genre it falls into. I'd encourage you to reconsider it without the context of this videos goal. You might be pleasantly surprised.
I like the judge system, it makes the game more challenging, you can also disban rules if you have the specific cards for them, with the exception of some main story chapters. The game is way more vast with jobs, i love that it passes in the FFXII world that is a very unique one with all the races and i also like how you learn skills wearing specific armors just like FFIX. It took great things from great games in the franchise to make something special. The only thing the original can have as better is the more serious toned story. I wish the GBA Tactics Ogre played like that with exception of the judges(only because they wouldn't make sense in that one), because the story of that game is also amazing, Tactics Ogre deserves love, even more considering it's the OG.
Agreed here. Great game. If you want a job system, this is one of the best there is, on any console out there.

The “attachment / trinket” you mentioned for Boktai 1/2 is literally just the game, there is no attachment. The game cart was clear and had a light sensor as part of the PCB. Because the shell of the cart was clear, the sensor on the game board could sense and measure the sunlight.

How I'd improve your tier list:
- Megaman Battle Network - S Tier - Easily one of the best megaman game series ever made, especially 5/6, which are the pinnacle of the genre. The "pokémon versioning" was actually well implemented in these games as their bosses/battle mechanics (crosses for 6, souls for 5) function very differently across each version. And, fun fact, there's still an active PvP playerbase of hundreds of MMBN players, and they've even developed rollback netcode - yes, for a GBA game - they're insane. PvP is surprisingly fun and balanced too, especially for 6.
- Breath of Fire 2 - A/S tier- Story is a big leap forward from BoF1 I think, and is of a much more mature theme. Full of memorable characters and events.
- Final Fantasy Tactics Advance - S tier - This may show my bias a bit because I prefer the GBA/NDS FFT games over the original one, but I believe they're also great stories (more the GBA one than the NDS one, but NDS certainly wins in QoL and job/build variety). You're right when you say the judges were annoying and could be implemented better - totally agree.
- Boktai 2 - S tier - Boktai overall is full of amazing characters and the story is great. Very innovative gameplay also, very tematic with the vampire hunter setting and the second game expands a lot on ways to play the game and overall stuff to do.
- Riviera - A tier - The gameplay and story are great, i don't know why you rated it this low. Maybe because the replayability isn't that great? The game may be very linear but there's still quite a bit to explore.
- Pokemon - A tier - I'm more of a Gen 2 fan, but can't deny that gen3 was massively popular and successful to the franchise.
The advance wars series is a masterpiece
Yes but a buzzkill if you want any control in rpg-like customization... even by rts standards for that matter. I tried, wasn't for me either. But wow is it polished. I can see it's great for the audience it was meant for

A lot of people place the psp as the best handheld......but the GBA! Man I can make a strong case for gba. A snes in your pocket, great games for a few MBs. Decent graphics, etc...

Man, a while since I last played a JRPG in the GBA since Golden Sun, Great Tier List Erick!
Just the video I needed. Craving some shorter cozy jrpgs these days, all of these are new to me except advanced wars.
This reminded me that I have those two FE games, FFTA, and the Golden Sun games on my Wii U, lol.
I kinda wished the shining force creators made an enhances port for the 2nd one as well.
Also, i know people have different opinions but for me Secret of mana was not good. I mean i have to enter a place at a specific time which changes by entering and exiting places. Made me rage quit out of frustration. Also, they have combos but i have no idea how to execute them properly. So yeah 👍.
Was sigma star saga a JRPG? It was a weird combo of gradius style with rpg elements

Fire Emblem 7 & 8 are two of my favorite games, awesome to see them up there. FE 6 gotta agree that it's just slightly lower. 7 has good story and well designed levels. While 8 has solid end game and more freedom (revisiting maps to fight hordes/2 choices between promotions)

17:47 ugh i tried to use the stategy guide for sssc i found at a thrift store while playing that. It was fun but missing lots so i had no clue what was missing for a while 😂

So Yggdra Union is on steam and Riviera is getting a remaster ? I hope it also ends up on steam at some point. Now my backlog is getting weird, they were on my gba one, then psp... i guess i'll move them up to steam ?
Also, if advance war is a rpg, then Dark Conflict is the best rpg on the DS >.>... ok, maybe not but it deserve a place in the top 5.
Strange tiering...
Watching videos like this trying to find an old GBA game I had. I just recall it reminded me heavily of pokemon, and only remember having a party of creatures, one of which was essentially a sunflower looking thing with a face. Can't find it anywhere, most similar to golden sun

I'm not a puzzle lover, struggled with Resident Evil and never beaten it without a guide, but Golden Sun was and is still in my top favorite games. I'm shocked you struggled with the puzzles. Having said that, if it's not your thing, it's not your thing. But I in fact, love Golden Sun 1 and 2.
Once again Erick, you have uploaded a fine piece of content for me to listen to while I work...
The only reason I could see Advance Wars 1 & 2 are considered RPGs is because of the tactical strategy aspect of the games.
You gotta give Golden Sun and FF Tactics another chance man xD, Golden Sun does have alot of puzzles, but none of them are so cryptic that youd never solve them, and the actual combat has a cool class system where you mix and match elements to become different classes, and you can sacrifice those elements in combat to summon powerful attacks, at the cost of losing your upgraded class for the fight. As for the story of Tactics, it's actually not too terrible as you go further in, it's alot more mature thematically then it starts off, the main character desperately wants to return to the real world while the others who get pulled in don't seem to mind.

GameShark codes. Also, I have an unplayable copy for my GBA because the light sensor is dead. So again GameShark helps there too.
There's a "hack" that can full the solar bar by using a specific command
Certain emulators can imitate the effect with your phone along with ROM hacks

LOVE me some fire emblem 6! Highly recommend to anyone who hasn’t played it and liked 7 and sacred stones to give 6 a shot on an English rom or reproduction, feels like a good level of difficulty after playing 7 and 8
Yippee, I am one of the first commenters! Golden Sun is quite good, they say. My friend, Satan said he was too young to remember the gameboy rpgs. I personally am too old to remember them! What it is all about? Beating the game! I don't know what is my favourite rpg, there are so many good ones. I want to try Suikoden 2 one day! See ya!

All you need to make me watch is to show any Dept Heaven game.
Summon Night could've been an A or S if not for how it kept forcing us to go back and forth to progress the story. Not that I don't like the story, but the amount of backtracking are ridiculous even for a JRPG.

black and white 1 and 2 were also rly good after it, they series fell of hard though

The sad truth about this series is that we got almost none of the games... the mainline series has like 9, and we just got one or two in the West, I think? Such a shame. :/

Both SMT and Pokemon were influenced by Dragon Quest V
MegaTen predates DQV though. Megami Tensei came out in 1987 while DQV was 1992.
Edit: This is assuming you're talking about the monster catching/recruiting aspect of the games. Not sure what else you may be suggesting.
I did *not* like FFTA. It would have been fine if it didn't share a setting with the PS1 game but with that in mind Ivalice's problems just feel petty compared to the cruelty that came before. A story about history repeating itself or about violence held in check by a central government would have worked but thats not the one we got. You should have given it a D for not meeting expectations
Riviera should be a tier higher for being so far ahead of its time. It's a similar style to what you would expect from an indie rpg nowadays - except the art quality and sheer creativity puts it well above that
SRT doesn't hold up well when seen as a pure strategy game. I want to give it a C tier but its easy to see why SRT 1 is the version that the rest of the series copies off of

Really like that kind of video with a good critism of all game of a genre on a console, furthermore, your presentation is really good.
But there are some games, where I really don't agree with your ranking:
You can't put FFV on B, while puttin FF6 on S. Both have crappy sound compared to the snes version, while having very good bonuses.
Even if you prefer FF6 edgy story, V have the greatest gameplay of the series with a fun story. Both should get an A.
Same as FFV, FFTA having a chilsdish story don't mean it has a bad story, and the gameplay, even if not has good as FFV, he's still really enjoyable, minimum B.
Golden Sun, I may have put them on S... But A is still understandable.
Pokemon... Well really, i understand that some people don't like that series, but ranking them so low is not in your favor. These are among the best in the series and without a doubt, among the top games on the console.
FireRed / LeafGreen and Emerald : S. Ruby / Sapphire : S/A. Mystery Dungeon : A/B.
Tales of Phantasia... having the game a little slow never bothered me, the game is still good, look great and have cool bonus... at last B, maybe A.

I wanna say trails of cold steel but that's not for any one more of you love jrpgs . But I also think uncharted is amazing series that everyone needs to play an the mafia series . I agree with all ur choices my top 3 on your list are final fantasy god of war an GTA .
Not bad, except that you start with a mistake, the « Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku » games, were not made by an american studio, but by Infogrames / Atari which is a french studio… and a game doesn’t have to be made in Japan, to be a JRPG, hence games like Chained Echoes, Sea of Stars and plenty of others shouldn’t be qualified as JRPG either.

I'd put FE6 in S tier because my waifu, Fir, is in it.
I was a kid 100% invested in the Pokémon clone era. They aren’t great games, but hell, give me all the Medabots and Monster Ranchers and all the other games nobody else wants to play.

I agree on the FE series aside playing 7 before 6 is kind a bad, for example i didnt know that the thieves couldnt promote which ruined m playtorugh becaush they were my strongest unit at chatper 11.So i cound play on and had to retart

i love FFT for the psx. FFTa 1 was cool, but i hate the judges so much. same with A2. medabots gba games are great, loved the rokusho version.

As mush as I don't like Shining Soul 1, Shining Soul 2 for me was S tier, one of top-favourite rpgs on GBA, alongside both Fire Emblem, Shining Force. Pokemon Ruby/Saphire and Riviera was A tier, and Summon Night games B tier.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance a C?
Well that’s your opinion. That game initially got me into Final Fantasy despite being an Tactical RPG and I’d recommend it.
Kinda lost my respect based on Golden Sun. I like puzzles in my RPGs so our tastes are clearly different.
FF6 is the only pure RPG in the tier S.

I think you're wrong about Final Fantasy tactics advance, you need to think logically why the judge system exists. In the original game you can exploit the shit out of it without consequence. At least this can bring in a bit of consequence to one trick ponies. I know later it doesn't mean much, but the story isn't for kids you need to spend much more time in it.

Advanced Wars 1 and 2 are good games, but they are definitely not jrpgs, those are strategy games.
Legacy of goku is a jrpg, jrpg is a genre not a country of origin, sorting games by where they're made is like sorting clothes by color, it's dumb. Sorting game is meant to help find games that fit your style, where it's made does not mean shit.
I gotta be blunt as a BN Fan. I recommend never playing the first Game and going to any other BN Game. The First just has the setup of the world. But every other game has WAY Better Battle Mechanics and gets rid of a lot of the weird crap from the first game.
BN3 for the best story. BN6 for the most action packed gameplay of the series....

i agree FF1 and 2 didnt age as well, but thats in comparison to other FF games around the same era. It is still better in terms of graphics, story, and gameplay than all those game you put in the B tier prior to that point
