- It seems like every game is being remade or remastered these days!! But, have you ever stopped to think about the point of them? Why are we doing this? And by we I mean the big multi million dollar companies behind these refreshes. Well today, Snugboy figures it out once and for all (or maybe he doesn't idk watch the video)

I feel like over the years, the videogame companies stopped trying things and play it safe trying to get easy money by making the games we played when we were kids. I miss when companies tried something good and BANG new type of game. I just hope the next generation is not only focused on the past and starts looking st the future and innovations.

Man I love these “topic” videos of yours! It’s so fun to see you exploring multiple facets of a subject, yet your personality keeps the whole thing super cohesive and well paced! It really goes to show how good you’ve gotten when you can cover a topic that’s been done by so many on the platform and still have it be a unique and fresh video! RE4 is one of my favorite games of all time! They did a great job with the remake. But I will always prefer a more artistic approach to a realistic one. The original is timeless and should be experienced first, in my opinion :)
I don’t mind the new look of the Replicant characters, but I did love how they really wore the weight of the journey on their face’s in the original. They all looked weary and gaunt, and it totally fit that tone and world. But they are also delightfully beautiful in the new one. It’s all a win, I suppose.

I feel like a lot of remasters really walk the line between 'fresh version of the game for new and old players to enjoy' and 'cheap way to get more money'. I don't know which one TP HD is but- YO IS THAT DUNBAN SHIRTLESS

I'm so glad that you're a fan of emulation. It's so important, especially for games that are literally out of order anymore.
Amazing video snug, the editing is as flawless as ever and the humour was incredible. I personally don't mind playing older games, I just wish they would just upscale and make stuff available on modern consoles instead of emulating, WHERE IS METAL GEAR SOLID SERIES ON MODERN CONSOLES.
I will say the great thing about the Capcom remakes is that they don't entirely replace the original by offering a different expierence than the original, with altered stories and sections. I adored the re4 remake and then I went back and 100% classic re4, two unique expierences... even if the remake still blew the og out of the water imo, same with RE2.

I also feel like so many tiny decisions kind of get assumed when we get from the original to a remaster/remake, and are not always given the time to be unpacked in their original context and so are lost? It's often forgettable but they can pile up, not to mention that one problem that a lot of remasters specifically tend to have is to cater to the current cool "next gen look" and have this intention trump some visual decisions that might have been birthed out of limitations, but contributed a great deal to ambiance or themes.

I think the Zelda CDI games could really use a fresh coat of paint :) oh and maybe maybe maybe a remaster of Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness would be sooooo lovely.

15:19 You can play either version first. RE4 remake just like the FF7 Remake has enough differences that still allow the originals to not get replaced by the newer versions. I beat RE4 & FF7 Remakes and then tried the originals. You can do that too if you want to play a modern style game first.

The first time I experienced an inferior remaster in terms of presentation was return to Arkham Asylum. I never played Return To Arkham, but I HAVE plays the og asylum. I replayed it a while ago and when compared to RTA, it's so much more creepy and atmospheric, unlike its remaster that ditched all that atmosphere to look more like Arkham City, which also got lost in translation, but only slightly, imo. (That, and the originals are much cheaper lol)

PS. I will stand by the N64 OoT and MM until the day I die! They look 10 times more interesting than they're (mostly) squeaky clean remakes!
Really nice video! I had to skip some parts to avoid spoilers, but I agree with most all of what you brought up.
Final Fantasy III's remake for western audiences was legitimately an entirely different game, with actual stories for the different characters and obviously superior graphics on the Nintendo DS. And the updated soundtrack (Oh my dog, I am forever upset that they didn't include the DS version's OST in the Final Fantasy rhythm games)!!
But yeah, imo I think remasters/remakes are only justified in situations where there's going to be such obvious, extreme jumps in quality. Games going from PS2 to PS4/5 don't really seem worth it. Give em a few more years; I'd really like to see old games' remakes on the hot console of 2032 (provided the world lasts that long).

the re4 remake is amazing. both are definitely worth playing and each of them's different enough that neither replaces the other. do you want campy 90s-style action? play the original. do you want something more serious and grounded? play the remake.

Something I've noticed is that I sometimes seem unhappy with an original game after playing the remake.
I recently played through Chrono Trigger on Steam and it was amazing! I loved every second of it, and when I went onto forums or discussed anything about the game, I was just told my version was shit???
Any gameplay or discussing to the game was in the SNES original version, I even saw some mods to make parts of the game like the original again. So I said screw it, got an emulator downloaded the original and... it sucked. At least for me. Of course it still had what made Chrono Trigger so great but I could barely play an hour or so before the desire to get back to the steam version came.
So what I'm saying, maybe playing the remake clouds your view of the original? Am I just an idiot that can't appreciate the SNES classic? Maybe the steam version is better? Who knows? I'm pulling a Snugboy now so discuss it in the replies.

As someone who adores the original Xenoblade art style and was pulled more into the game because of that, I greatly appreciate your commentary on the definitive edition. I also hate how they changed the controls on the definitive edition vs the original and updated menus. The original gem menus were perfect and now they're so mediocre
One of my favorite games is The Outer Worlds. It received a remaster a little while ago, overhauling the graphics and adding some slight gameplay tweaks. But for some reason they didn't bother to optimize the game, and it preforms terribly even on top end hardware. Its such a shame since its truly a really charming game, and my one fault with the original, was its slightly muddy textures and occasional frame drops. So to see it get done so dirty, for what I can assume was corporate greed by their publisher, is a shame. Another Snugboy classic btw!

I'm a bit late to watching this but I finally got a chance to great video. I have a few opinions I wanna share.
1. I love when people diss Halo CE anniversary so based. 2. I honestly think Halo 2 anniversary is a mostly solid Remaster of the original and even the Bungie developers think they vastly improved over CE anniversary which is awesome.
3. Personally I honestly don't really like the old VA for Zack I vastly prefer the new one imo he fits the character way better and I just enjoy the acting more.
Anyway that's all I got solid video had a great time watching it keep it up man

Maybe I'm just old, but I don't get the constant chasing of higher resolution and more polygons. I can't think of any remakes or remasters I've seen that I think benefits from having new graphics, and I think a lot of them (looking at you nee Link's Awakening) look substantially worse.
For me, the only things I want are some quality of life improvements and the ability to play it on modern hardware.

Tbh the Witcher 3 and MGSV came out in 2015 and the progress since then is nowhere close to the progress from 2007-2015. Just played assassins creed the ezio collection, and ut looked better on my of when it came out than the ps4 version does. Heck Crysis is 16 and still looks pretty good. Seems like the biggest revolutions these days are more hardware being able to utilize older tech to its fullest potential than anything.
I'm pretty sure they changed Peter Parker's model because the new one looks like Tom Holland.

Good remake - Fire Emblem Echoes. So much added content, quality of life changes, and it is so beautiful compared to the NES original. It's not a perfect game but it's an improvement in every way.
Bad remake - The Nonary Games. I love the DS original, 999, but the changes that were made when it got re-released as The Nonary Games are just sad to see. Some guy made an hour long video explaining why (Lost in Translation) but to summarize, the script and mechanics were changed in a way that hurt the storytelling and main plot twist. I can't recommend the remake over the original in this case.
Sonic Adventure DX on Steam is the worst abomination ever as a "remaster". They butchered the Dreamcast original by a lot.
Am I the only person that thinks Rayman 2 desperately needs a remake? No? Okay.
