Did not feel like 90 minutes at all, this was such a heartwarming love letter to a classic. Absolutely adore how you marry your voiceover gags with fresh on screen stuff(you making out with spirit temple is literally peak RUclips). You have a real knack for being able to get real meticulous and keep it interesting, every videoessayist is jealous! I think a huge strength of yours that goes under the radar is your narration. It’s damn hard to recite events in a compelling way but you do so in a manner that sucks the viewer in for story time around the campfire. Hard disagree with anyone that says Spirit Temple before Shadow, the game says you need the boots to cross the desert, and you get the boots inside the Shadow Temple. Bloinking your way over the desert doesn't count and going into the Shadow Temple, getting the Boots and leaving is also bloinking in it up. Spirit is the final temple thematically too since you use the time travel elements inside the dungeon and not just some mini dungeon well. You last see the owl at the Spirit Temple and pretty sure Navi even says Shadow before Spirit.

    • @killmaster46
      @killmaster46 Месяц назад +2

Although gameplay wise I agree the order of the medallions implies spirit before shadow and also the order of the ocarina songs. Maybe originally it was intended but when you play shadow before spirit feels better

    • @blue_hoodie21
      @blue_hoodie21 29 дней назад +3

Another reason I believe shadow comes before spirit, is because in the games code, you can only get the nocturne of shadow after you have the forest, fire, and water medallions. Without those 3 you can't activate the cutscene in kakariko. That gives me hard belief that the game wants you to do shadow before you do spirit. Plus I think fighting the two witches who are known to be Ganondorf's mothers just before you fight ganondorf himself is more poetic than fighting a weird tortured beast monster thing.

I was 8 when this game came out. I cannot exaggerate how amazing this game was playing it through the first time: the plot twists, the fact you changed into an adult, the shock of being tricked into fighting Phantom Ganon in the forest temple, and lastly the revelation of Sheik being Zelda figuratively blew mine and my cousins mind.
I thankfully still have my OG N64 and copy of OoT. I cannot wait to play it with my kids when they’re old enough.

This is the first time I've seen someone discussing the order of the Shadow and Spirit Temple. I always thought it was obvious that Spirit is last, even given its area. You have access to the desert much later than everything else, and even its narrative with the boss being the witches and the mechanics of the child/adult link to solve the puzzles, wraps everything up perfectly before the final battle.

I was ten when this game came out. My family got it close to, if not on release, and when we played through it we loved everything about it. Less than a year later and I was fully bored with it. All classic Zelda games fall pray to this. The games have puzzles that have one solution, and once found or solved the games loses most of their fun. For all the revolutions in gaming this game made, now it is just a tiered old man in a young man's world. I'm sure that had I never played it as a child I would find it really fun, but I did and now I can't find any enjoyment out of it.

It truly felt like a revolution at the time, younger me understood that I was playing something special. By today standards I don't think you can call OOT the best game ever made but at the time of its release I believe you could have made a good argument to back up that statement. Ship of Harkinian is now such a good way to play OOT. Lot of optional enhancements that fix some of the more annoying bits that would be solved in later games. Also, modern texture packs and it not being an emulator, but a native port instead. Improvements such as faster text speed, block pushing speed and ladder climbing. Can change default response to the owl to "Yes." Can have golden skulltulas spawn during the day as well. Little things like that.
I'm one that doesn't find the water temple all that bad. Most players seem to get stuck at the point where they need another key at the hookshot waterfall platform puzzle on the 3rd level. Most miss that there's a secret hole under the floating platform inside the center tower when you raise the water level to level 2. I like that the dungeon requires you to go back to other areas and complete stuff that weren't possible earlier on.
As for the Spirit vs. Shadow debate, the game prods you toward Shadow Temple. Navi hints at going to Kakariko village after Water Temple. From there you meet Shiek again, who teaches you the Nocturn of Shadow. There are zero hints in the game to go to Gerudo Valley at all after Water Temple. That being said, I like: Well -> Gerudo Valley quests -> Shadow Temple -> Spirit Temple.

I have to say, I'm about to turn 30 myself, and ever since I was around 4 or 5, this was the game that sparked my love for what video games could be. This is my favourite game ever made, and it was honestly really cool and heartwarming seeing someone significantly younger than myself in this day and age, have such a genuine love and appreciation for a game that is so incredibly dear to me!
First video I've seen of yours, and it was such an incredibly well well crafted video and analyses of OoT that I'm subbing and definitely checking out your other videos!
PS. Only thing that stuck out to me as a little incorrect was the "Boss Music". If you're unaware, there's actually 2 "Boss Themes"; the original that you hear during your first Boss fight against Gohma and MOST of the bosses. The second is a different song that plays as the Boss Theme to the Fire Dungeons King Dodongo and Volvagia fights!

I remember when OoT came out and we got it for our N64. My dad tried to play it, got through the Deku Tree dungeon and then at Gohma, he quit. Because he didn't understand (somehow) to use the camera to look around for it. My mom always got headaches from the 3D space so she never played it. They never could make the jump to the 3D aspect of games.
Then one day i picked up where my dad left off, doing what I always do and press every button until I solved what the game wanted me to do (use the camera to find Gohma) and from there, I was hooked. When I was real little, ALttP was my introduction to Zelda, but OoT was special for me because it was my adventure. I would watch my parents play ALttP, but never really played it til years later, after OoT. For me, OoT is what hooked me in as a Zelda fan. But I'm like you, I played Twilight Princess a bit more than repeat plays of OoT and also did fun glitch runs on TP, so TP at times edges out in some regards. xD
As for Zelda = Sheik reveal, honestly, I was like, "Oh, this is like Mulan, cool". And that was it. Not a lot going on in my kid brain.

You're absolutely right. I was 12 when Ocarina of time came out and played a ton of Super Nintendo. When the n64 came out and I played Mario 64 it felt like magic. It was absolutely mind blowing. Kids today really have no idea. There haven't been really any massive changes between next gen consoles since then. Link To The Past was my favorite Super Nintendo game so I remember how excited I was for Ocarina. Back then we didn't have RUclips to look up trailers. I remember seeing the 1st screen shots in a Nintendo Power magazine and was just awestruck. Then when it finally came out it truly did feel like a masterpiece. I have a ton of great childhood memories from that time involving the n64. So many amazing games. I'm now 38 and honestly I don't enjoy gaming nearly as much. I'm sure some of that is because I'm just older and I MYSELF has changed but I think the games have changed 2. The latest Zelda games now like BOTW & TOTK I really enjoyed but honestly there was just too much going on with them. Too much time in the menu (attaching an item to an arrow) and a lot of other complaints. I long for the simpler games back when I was a kid. The Super Nintendo-Gamecube era. That's why I love watching videos like this. It takes me back to that time in my life where there was little to worry about and we were experiencing the golden age of video games.

yo snugboy, i raaaarely ever write aaaaany comments but i love this video and your passion for OoT. i mean, i feel very similar, zelda oot was one of my first real adventures in the 3 dimensional world. i remember vividly I'd never make it past the forest temple when i was younger. getting back to it with the age of 15 (?) on the gamecube and never got past the shitiy daemonic water temple until i eventually beat the game after countless of tries on the damn wii u a couple of months later!! such a wonderful game, and yea there's loads of nostalgia but it nevertheless deserves to be called a damn masterpiece.
    have a good one snugboy!

Damn, as a 90’s kid who still remembers his older brother telling him we got the game when getting picked up from summer camp, I can confirm the plot twist of shiek being Zelda as unparalleled and next level.
The reality? I never got past the water temple and just played my brother’s file after he beat it. Only to finally play the game all the way through yeeeears later.
Great video, literally going to replay it after watching. Been a few years so it’ll be nice and fresh.

Growing up with an NES/SNES, I could NOT comprehend how the game was supposed to work when I first saw the beta screenshots for this game in Nintendo Power. It blows my mind when little kids nowadays are just born with this type of knowledge. 😂This was such an impactful game for me (like FFVII)...though, when I grew up it wasn't my top favorite anymore...like FFVII. 😂
I did think it was funny when later copies had green blood for Ganon because BLOOD! Loq

Agreed on Sheik being a dude, I always assumed that the transformation was magical somehow. It also definitely seems like the original intention- the in-game dialogue referring to Sheik as a young man, and looking at his art for Ocarina. Like... Sheik has pecs, lol

My first time playing Zelda was with my brothers copy of Links Awakening. Then my Dad got me a Gamecube that came with the Zelda Collection, when scrolling through the games, I thought the Mask on Majoras Mask looked cool and played that one first, figured out it was a sequel when I went over to OoT and the game was less impressive and the only transformation was from Kid to Adult. OoT is definitely a big game when it comes to what it inspired in games from then on, but MM and LttP are def better games. Great video man.

There’s so much I could say about OoT. The music is my favorite of the franchise. I have so many great memories of my younger brother and I renting it back in ‘98 over Christmas Break, and we couldn’t figure out how to get into Dodongo’s Cavern (give me a break, I was 10, and he was 7). This moment birthed our tradition of playing Zelda with nothing but Christmas lights on during the Holiday Season. The story was fun as a kid, and is really meaningful now as an adult that is nearing my late 30’s with a child of my own that is almost 10. It’s my favorite of the franchise (TP is an extremely close second).
Also, I would have sworn the copy we rented as kids had Link make a “Tee-tee” noise after he yawned and stretched if you’ve been idle for a bit. I’ve never heard any other time than that though, in any other copies so it probably isn’t real.
Also, I’d love to hear your thoughts on Tears of the Kingdom. I liked your video on BotW.

Ocarina of Time is a very important game. It took everything from Link To The Past and put it in 3D. Sure the game is pretty vanilla nowadays, but without this game, we wouldn’t have gotten Twilight Princess.(The GOAT) Plus, there’s the Ship of Harnikin PC port that enhances the game and makes it more open, and the 3DS version which fixes up the Water Temple, no boring and slow text scrolling, better item placement, and (in my opinion) better graphics that are faithful to the artwork of the original game.(sorry for this long comment)

Sheiks theme also has Zelda’s lullaby hidden inside of it, if you listen closely to the last part of it, it plays the notes quickly before going back to the first part.
It mirrors how Sheik always comes and leaves quickly before her true identity could be revealed

    A few notes:
1.) I believe that you can tell where the water will get raised to in the Water Temple based on Link's vertical position when he plays the song. So if he's at the marker that's high up, the water gets raised high up. At least that's how I remember it.
2.) There's a line in the game that says that the Gerudo sneak away to find boyfriends in Castle Town and that's how they get pregnant. By relying on Hylian men. Definitely a fascinating culture lol.
3.) I'd love to hear your thoughts on TOTK! Please make a video! :D
Anyways, this video was great. I really enjoyed listening to this at work today :)

I like your videos a lot, and i subscribed to you when i saw your Twilight Princess video beause its my favorite too- its so underappreciated! Ive been arguing with people my whole life about how good TP is, and im glad to see that its getting more love these days from a younger generation of gamers.
Im curious though, you said TotK disappointed you?? Ive been seeing that critique a lot. There are so many videos calling totk a disappointment and i simply do not understand, i think its a phenomenal, gorgeous, exciting game. I couldnt get into botw because the open world stresses me out, but i started playing a few months before totk release because i wanted to be able to appreciate it. Then when playing totk i was totally blown away! The gameplay is more streamlined than botw(imo) and i find the depths absolutely captivating. I think they overhyped the sky, people were expecting some Skyward Sword shit and i didnt play that one bc i hate the art style, so i wasnt let down by the sky. They didnt even tell us there was a whole new map to explore beneath the surface and i think it is amazing, beautiful, and fascinating. Im nowhere near completing my map of the depths, maybe a bit less than half, and im 330 hours into the game. I havent beaten it yet, i just now got the last sage(the secret one) and im about to try to find Ganondorf finally. So i havent watched any of the critique videos because i want to experience the whole game organically.
The Master Sword pull in totk was the most amazing experience in Zelda to date. When i found it i hadnt collected all of the tears yet, so i didnt even know what was happening. I was completely mesmerized. It was incredible. I even reloaded and put on a different outfit because it was so cinematic i wanted to see it in cooler gear. I wish id had the Fierce Diety set at the time lol that would have been cool af. Also. When i stumbled upon the Fierce Diety mask i nearly had a heart attack. I didnt have the quest for it yet so i was totally surprised. I love totk so much! I dont understand why anyone has a problem with it /: such a great experience. Ive loved every minute.
Also, you mentioned voice acting. I HATE voice acting in games, it always feels super unnatural and ruins my immersion. Like i can hear the human person talking in the recording studio and i dont feel like im listening to the characters. I despise the voice acting in botw/totk. Zelda in particular sounds horrible, i hate her forced british accent and how deep her voice is. Ganondorfs VA is the only one that didnt make me cringe. I have the same problem with anime, dialogue that was written in japanese sounds wrong and unnatural in English unless the translation is super seamless and the VAs are super talented. And even if they are, there's always going to be one or two who totally phone it in, or try way too hard and put on a voice no living person speaks with. Like with every single female character lol. At least Zeldas VA didn't put on an artificial kawaii-desu bullshit voice, but the fake accent is just as bad for me. Needless to say i switched the voice language to japanese as soon as the first cutscene was over. Much much better. I felt like i was playing an anime during a few of the scenes, especially the flashback Ganondorf battles.
