'Ceremony' [14th May 1980] Joy Division - Alternative EQ

Recorded at Graveyard Studios, Prestwich, Greater Manchester four days before Ian Curtis’ suicide, this is the final version of 'Ceremony' Joy Division played and therefore you could say the lyrics, which were still being fine tuned, represent the definitive version of the song which would have been, according to Peter Hook, their next vinyl release (coupled with ‘In a Lonely Place’), though where the two 'chorus' verses are concerned the live version seems more representitive of a finished song. I’ve altered the audio recording (from Heart & Soul disc 3) with EQ changes. Below, I’ve done my best (over time) to transcribe the vocal rendition, but certain words, and thus phrases, will always be subject to speculation, which I like... because it means the song is completely open to interpretation by the listener - which is how art should be. Everyone should have their own version of Ceremony ;-)
What appears to be clear, is that the lyrics reflect a romantic and defiant resignation, very much a 'swansong', leading to a lightly narcissistic close; “Avenues all lined with trees - picture me, it’s then you start watching, watching forever... and I will turn, turn in to stone.” Born of an inevitability, of loss and losing, It becomes a cyclic piece around fate, passing and rebirth relayed very personally. A subject that interested Ian Curtis (‘Dead Souls’ for example); it's worth noting that this recording followed just 10 days after Bernard Sumner’s hypnotic regression exercise with Ian, revealing past lives, which made a considerable impression on him and may explain the updated lyrics in the first chorus from the live version sung 10 days earlier, at the last ever Joy Division concert. I've also always liked to think that there was a message to his daughter in this song, but that may just be a fancy.
As more information (from those close to Ian) has become publicly available over the years, I’m inclined to believe that, due to the strain of several events reaching a climax during his final weeks, Ian Curtis had decided he wasn’t going on the American tour by the time of this recording (14th May), and so I like to think of ‘WATCHING FOREVER’ as a fitting epitaph. Ha! I guess he was right.
Of course, when all is said and done, there is only one person who knows the truth behind the song which became Ceremony.
    Ian Curtis 15th July 1956 - 18th May 1980
Possible lyrics (those in bold are a best guess)
    Pressures high and affairs unnerving
We’ll just stay the same old story
Broke us while the wheels were turning
Turn away any cares I brought this time
Helping her to see you calling
Come of age and he will free her
Never doubt that I was happy
Never doubt the chains that slowed this time
I'll break them all, no mercy shown
Heaven knows, this time she’ll get someone
Watching her, each thing she did
We’ve got to stop, too frail to waste this time
I'll break them all, know mercy's gone
Heaven knows, it’s hard to leave someone
    Avenues all lined with trees
Picture me, it's then you start watching
    Watching forever
    Watching forever
    I return, buried in stone
And I return, buried in stone
    Buried in stone
    Buried in stone

the last minutes... ian talking... the song was meant to cheer him up. no one can forget, and will never forget a friend commiting suicide, that's our burden for being alive

i enjoy your interpretation of the lyrics, very much in line with something ian could've written. listening to this version now, i can honestly hear the same words you transcribed, nothing seems off at all, like some i've seen. cheers

Thanks for your comments... I am sure they aren't correct, but it is an interpretation based on the manc accent, Ian's writing style and the reasonably established presumption that it was written for his wife.... Alongside the Stephen Morris vocal version that was the original transcription before New Order did a rewrite prior to recording it. Oddly, I'm definitely not sure about the two lines "...this sinking ship, kept ashore, withheld the waves..." - it's not really Ian Curtis' style. Cheers :-)

This is why it's so unnerving
    Witnessing the same old story
This is why the wheels are turning
Gone away and turn again this time
    Listen now the savior's calling
Come again but we won’t be here
Looking back as I walk faster
Think again and change its way this time
Oh, I'll break them all no mercy shown, heaven knows its got to get somewhere
Watching her in a sinking ship
The time she cried, but failed to wake this time
I'll break them all no mercy shown, heaven knows its got to lead somewhere
Avenues all lined with trees, picture me in ten years time watching
    Watching forever
    Watching forever
    Forever, let it be so
    Forever, let it be so
    Let it be so
    Always be so
Line 9 was also sung: "Oh, I'll break them all no mercy shown, heaven knows I’ve got get somewhere" at the soundcheck (5-2-1980)

It reads very similar to a version I transcribed many years ago.... I think I have about 6 or 7 alternative translations, lol, each of which provides a slightly different seasoning to the dish. There's some lines we'll have to agree to disagree on mate, especially "in ten years time watching" which is "and (or "it's") then you start watching" and "let it be so" which is "buried in stone"

Yeah, that resignation in his voice... and a plea, not for himself, but for the well being of his wife, it would seem.

It quite possibly doesn't Neal. I just did it to look at the recording from another angle, if you like.
I'm posting a recording of my bands version later today - I try to fuse the character of Ian Curtis' voice with my own. It obviously ain't Joy Division by any stretch; but the idea was to get a good quality live version out there in their style, rather than New Orders or an individual interpretation. Give it a listen if you get a chance.

It's an excerpt from a "hypnotic reversion" tape that Bernard recorded with Ian to try and help him, not long after he swallowed a load of pills.

    • @SowiloMedia

I posted them initially, then decided to delete them. Basically, I believe it should be a song where people hear what they want to hear. I know it sounds like romantic claptrap, but that way it's not just a parting 'gift' to his wife, but to all of us ;-)
I will post a link to the CTRL live version of the song here, once I have added the lyrics, and then, should you wish, you can read my version.
