I wish I could answer that one Mike, I just know that having lost a very close friend ten years ago, I never thought in a million years that someone I knew since childhood and dearly loved, wouldn’t live to see his 40th Birthday. Nothing was ever obvious or visible on the outside and amongst his family and friends he was the life and soul. However something deep inside and for a very long time was bothering him.
superALable Cheers for posting this rare gem. Much obliged. "No Love Lost" in the background really adds to this time capsule of greatness. Pure genius, he was. Thanks.
The difference between his singing voice and speaking voice is frightening. Couldn't sound any more different or opposite. I can see how why he had such a hard life, being so "split".
Sounds like a really nice guy. Crazy he talks about the Human League before they were even famous. This was before Don't you Want me was evee released.
If you have treatment resistant depression or anxiety get a gene site test. It’s a swab on the inside of your mouth and the report shows how you metabolize different medications in case you need to start at a lower or higher dose. I’m a rapid metabolizer with cptsd, mdd and a panic disorder (it’s the trauma lol) and I never felt help from my meds until this test helped us understand how I process and what my needs are. I hope we never lose another soul to suicide. I’ve been through hell over the past three years while my doctors worked to diagnose an autoimmune disease. The pain and symptoms were more than I could stand and I wanted to end it. New Dawn Fades got me through such awful times and now as I’m working towards remission it’s my survival song. “I’ve walked on water, run through fire can’t seem to take this anymore. It was me, waiting for me. Hoping for something more”.
Hope you're doing okay man i'll definitely check that out since my anxiety meds arent really helping also you can get through this just remember it does always get better
The pharmaceutical industry is modern day sorcery and anti depressants are a scam, just as electric shock treatment was. The cure for depression is natural living not the over processed artificial nightmare world we now exist in and the billion chemicals we are exposed to every time we leave our front doors.
I think most doctors with any kind of understanding of depression are starting to understand the monoamine deficiency theory is a load of bull. There’s so many things that can cause depression like inflammation, metabolic disorders and environmental factors.
I've actually heard this before and then as now I'm so sad that this is pretty much all we have of Ian Curtis beyond his sensational public appearances. Thanks for posting this and best wishes 👍
I’ve read Deborah Curtis’s autobiography and to me it tells me that ian curtis was a controlling and volatile man although he was also seriously ill and very old fashioned personally, however the lyricist the front man the show man was absolutely amazing and had he lived would of gone down as an all time great hope you’re sleeping easy ian god bless
From what I've read he was a different person to different people. His mistress when she was alive never said he was like that with her. Who knows why he was like that with Deborah, he was a complicated and strange man.
All men were like that then. You obviously didn't grow up when I did. When I grew up what the man said went, end of. Now we have a much better world where fags can read indoctrination stories to little children and we can be theys and thems. Oh yes how life has improved!
Ian was a prophet....gift to the people...and still we get stupid haters that whinge on about infidelity and similar nonsense..."like they know better??? # We would go on like nothing was wrong...?
He was a man at war with his true self. His celestial sign was that of CANCER. He bit off far more than he could chew in his life. He was on an accelerated path to recognition and fame. These were the things he thought wanted in life, he would sadly be wrong. Ian needed more... Ian failed to find the inner strength needed to overcome his life's many struggles sadly. He had the deck stacked against him. He had tremors and shakes. He was a mess at times. He handled it extremely well on the outside, but the inner soul was angry and sad. This man was emotionally weak and selfishly motivated at times too. He had very little honor for himself and his family, He would later find that inner guilt more crippling than his epilepsy. He was lead by emotions and fell in love easy. He made decisions based on his "heart" and many emotional states. He needed a guide to help him understand these emotional things better. He needed some real friends, ones that did not just obsess over his image and dark brooding nature. This man lacked a center and needed a really strong person in his life to help maintain inner focus. He instead looked inward and his structure was already falling apart right as it was being built. It is very sad. This man was a true artist of the heart. He lived as the artist trapped in the man. He denied himself that inner closure and security he desperately needed. His emotional weaknesses are what destroyed him. He should have focused on the person he wanted to become. Ian needed to take charge of that strong observant voice that tried to save him. That powerful gift the universe gave him. That brooding protector that become his artistic signature. It was the dark tone of his singing that shadowed the real Ian Curtis. His inner soul's voice become the substitute for inner strength he needed and lacked. You can hear the weak, sad, and confused parts of him in many songs too. When you hear that dark and brooding baritone belting... It is that of his soul... It is then that one realizes... He could have saved himself with some time and patience... He needed deep inner strength. He needed to find who he was, not force a fake kind of person he felt others wanted him to be. He was a deep soul trapped in a semi-selfish and profoundly emotional mind, one that would be molded by his heroes and all the influences surrounding him. You who were by his side did all you could. You should not let his death weigh upon you. He made his choices and he chose his exit out of this world. He had his reasons and he must have felt them to be the best at the time. His emotions sadly won against the soul dying inside. Hidden guilt and deep self loathing really start to weigh on one's soul. This guy seemed nice and chipper at times, he drank some, he laughed some, he seems kind of merry at times... Then you hear his voice sing and it becomes all too clear... This man is at war with himself and the world around him. The artist is dying to get out and become something more than the man. Ian's soul was screaming at the man to let him free! The soul wanted control over those emotions. Ian refused. If only Ian had seen in himself what we all saw and see in him now... What a lost opportunity this man became. R.I.P. I hope Ian is reborn again with a different sign. Maybe next time, he can become a Scorpio? He can then have a shot at obtaining the emotional strength and focus he lacked as a Cancer. This is the best scenario for such souls that depart earlier than expected. I subscribe to these ideas as they are the most optimistic and constructive. I know how this man felt. Perhaps, I was once a Cancer too? Who knows. Peace be with his soul and best wishes to his loved ones. Ian is not dead, his soul travels onward and will keep learning and growing in many different forms. I just hope it finds peace one day. All souls need peace.
I don't know that much about star sig6nd other than I'm a pisces but your comment was really profound. I humbly suggest you look up borderline personally disorder as this is him (and I) to a tee. (Reading touching from a distance cemented my opinion) . It's not easy... If he had sincerely engaged with psychiatric help then maybe he wouldve been helped but I highly doubt it. We have no grounding......no real sense of who we are and emulating our heroes is all too relatable and easy ...it could be our identity ..something you said is lacking in someone like him and I totally agree. It's a terrible symptom of bpd. Regardless he did live it out by choosing death and left an imprint of who he was ...that was probanly his intention due to him not feeling like he could do it in life. I relate so much and I can tell you he will be been fighting his minds terrible ideas all his adult life
Well, that movie is just a big parody of manchester's music scene, and most of the characters are exaggerations of their actual personas, and to be honest, the image Ian always passed with his lyrics and music is that he wasn't the most stable guy.
Hate to tell you this but it's fake, Joy Division never realised any merchandise. They preferred to just let the music speak for its self even the album cover for unknown pleasures is an image which they found in an old encyclopedia.

you can hear the sadness in his voice. a lot of people just think he sounds friendly and warm but it's actually just because hes being interviewed. the guys voice is actually quite dreary and slow and soft.
Its a Mancunian accent......its not dreary!
Ray Vaughan, Curtis was from Macclesfield. Over 20 miles from Manchester...
Ray Vaughan More like yes, it is a Mancunian accent, and it's very dreary haha

How. do you know?
LEGENDS NEVER DIE
A true poet, why did no one close him not see this mans pain, tragic beyond words. RIP ian.
They didn't pay attention to his lyrics only the way he sung them if they did they would have seen his pain.
Thank you!(superALable)
It is nice,to hear Ian's voice
in interview!
Still missed in 2017, thanks Ian.
Triop and in 2018 and forever, GENIUS!
Same 2018 till forever
2020!
2020 is horrible year. I keep listening to joy division to keep my sanity.
And now 2021
I've always found it interesting that Curtis's speaking voice is higher than his singing voice, for most people its the other way around.
He just has a very typical North West England. Lancashire area accent. We all speak like this.
What a legend
RIP - to the genius 38 years ago today.
HIS LAUGH 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
RIP IAN....40 YEARS AGO TODAY.
Yeah. I was there when John Peel announced his death on Radio 1 that night. I was about to turn 14. RIP dear Ian.
I would name my son after Ian. He is.... special.
superALable Cheers for posting this rare gem. Much obliged. "No Love Lost" in the background really adds to this time capsule of greatness. Pure genius, he was. Thanks.
Such a soft voice he really was perfect in every way sexy and talented
The difference between his singing voice and speaking voice is frightening. Couldn't sound any more different or opposite. I can see how why he had such a hard life, being so "split".
Sounds like a really nice guy. Crazy he talks about the Human League before they were even famous. This was before Don't you Want me was evee released.
The human league were active in the 70s long before dont you want me, and had a very different sound
Well done that man for putting this up!
i have a random drawing of him in my sketchbook from the other day that i drew while i was listening to JD. his speaking voice is so soft and gentle.
R.I.P Ian, legend 🙏🏻
What a terrible waste of a life. God rest his soul.
in Les Bains douches you hear him say "can you put the vocals up please" in one song
Well, you can hear him giggle and talking to the audience in the beggining of "Novelty" live from The Factory.
Link Es That’s when they’re playing Shadowplay.
He also says turn up the phone 2or 3 times at that same show
His voice... so soft. RIP Ian
@@bolegneseit doesn't always get better. Clichés won't solve everything. It very often gets worse, much worse.
A beautful soul
This man has influenced my music pretty heavily!
brilliant interview...thanks Alex....
Sounds Manc considering he's from Macc.
"... we're going to america.." jfc
My lord, that last question is so poignant with the gift of hindsight, knowing the fate of Joy Division and Ian Curtis. It's just really tragic 😣
@@Mitch93 he was barely a man he was just a kid really which makes it even more insane
All men were like that then. You obviously didn't grow up when I did. When I grew up what the man said went, end of. Now we have a much better world where fags can read indoctrination stories to little children and we can be theys and thems. Oh yes how life has improved!
Bless him.
Looking a pictures of Ian is always hunting
Rip Ian Curtis
Very nice looking guy I can see the appeal in him great talent but tortured soul
I can’t make a word of this lol ...
He sounds worn out :(
Ian's beautiful voice.
very very familiar accent for a fellow working class northerner :))
He's so cool shame about his tragedy xx
His Moon was in Scorpio, so is that why he felt so conflicted with himself?
Doctor, we've got another one get the thorazine ready.

I relate so much and I can tell you he will be been fighting his minds terrible ideas all his adult life
Ian Curtis is hot

I heard he's a pretty lean man now days, being a skeleton n all.
He was talented and amazing, his looks were truly great, but focus on his intellegence.
Tommy Wiseau I- why would you say that
He’s soooooo cool
Jesus i wasn't expecting his voice to be so soft
Such a chill guy. I really want to see the biopic now.
It's rubbish don't bother
Why on earth is Ian portrayed as an agressive maniac in 24hr Party People?
Well, that movie is just a big parody of manchester's music scene, and most of the characters are exaggerations of their actual personas, and to be honest, the image Ian always passed with his lyrics and music is that he wasn't the most stable guy.
Well neither do you since you're asking whoever why his persona was aggressive in 24 hour party people on a video that has nothing to do with it.

Hate to tell you this but it's fake, Joy Division never realised any merchandise. They preferred to just let the music speak for its self even the album cover for unknown pleasures is an image which they found in an old encyclopedia.
