They shouldn't blame themselves too much. Sadly it was a different time where things like depression and epilepsy weren't very well known about, and Ian seemed like a very private person who didn't like to open up about his problems. Also, there were all very young men in their early twenties and probably weren't equipped or fully mature enough to handle the situation.
I think Bernard was the only one who really understood Ian's dark side. Hooky and Steve both seem like the more upbeat fun loving guys but Ian and Bernard had their own demons weighing them down and probably connected on that level. Bernard endured some pretty heavy things in his own life, being raised in poverty by a single mother who suffered from Cerebral Palsy, so I wouldn't be surprised if he struggled with depression himself as a young man.
Yes he definitely had some mental problems when he was younger hence the drug abuse and anger issues. He was misunderstood, but he seems much more at peace now.
This is amazing! I listen to Shadowplay often, and I always think he is channeling something very deep and personal for him when he is singing. To me it sounds like he is holding himself back from crying in one part of the song. I thought to myself that maybe if he had done past life regression therapy, that it may have helped him, and here I found out today that he actually did, and yet it didn't help him. Although maybe if he had done it with a proper hypnotherapist in an extended session it may have actually helped him? I am a Buddhist and I strongly believe in past lives. Either way I suppose there is no point on dwelling on "what if's". Ian still lives on through his beautiful music and I think this is what is important at the end. One love.
This is so interesting and minimalistic..actually I think it is completely heartbreaking the way he pronounces his own name...like with some kind of regret.
In the song "Something Must Break," he sings, "This life isn't mine." Also, in "New Dawn Fades," he sings, "Me, seeing me this time, hoping for something else." I think the recurring doubt after having made a breakthrough is hard to deal with. New Order does indeed have a song titled "Doubts Even Here."
Does anyone have the full movie which this video is from? I thought I had heard that Barney hypnotised Ian who then revealed he had been a 16th century French peasant on his deathbed. Does anyone have more clips of Ian being hypnotised? Or is this the only one?
I know this is blasphemous but does anyone see a resemblance between Caligula and Ian Curtis? They look very similar. Also, Caligula was involved in creating laws and died at 28. That's the same age Curtis says he was when under hypnosis. Gives me the chills when I heard him say that.
I thought it says in Sumner's autobio that Curtis was a mercenary during the Hundred Years War in his past life. Fuck, I'm gonna buy that book just for the full transcription (they id the hypnotic regression twice and got the same answers from both sessions, apparently).
That's what i thought at first. I remember reading someweher that Ian was very impressed with Kafka's short story "In The Penal Colony" and he took the title for the song "Colony".
No Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980 around 8:00 am which is about the time he committed suicide. God has a way of expression anger towards us that's if you do believe in god.
I believe in the wrath of Zeus the old God and Odin the Norse God. They weren't to arsed when Ian killed himself. They were a bit mardy for a couple of hours, but next morning they were right as rain.
Whether one believes in god or not it’s a sorry state to postulate that god has nothing better to do than express his anger for whatever reason particularly towards his creation which is in a state of perpetual existential pain.
The 28-year-old he was referring to was a "previous life". That's why he was asked to say what he saw before he was born and that's why it's called past life regression therapy..
Brodyn I think that's reading way too much into it to put it mildly. More likely to be The Book of Law by Crowley if it followed a spiritual theme, as he was a reader of Crowley, but I don't think it's either. Maybe he didn't know either.
Saints are pit against the toughest demonic forces due to their souls strength - it's an equilibrium - balanced out by being tested according to their strength . he didn't cheat on his wife exactly they had a platonic relationship...anyway saints sin too until they perfect themselves or off themselves.. many do that too it's not easy for them.. i highly doubt the Law here refer to Alistair Crowley...i should have shut my mouth on this one. if you want to find out for yourself go and spend the next 10-20 years meditating and then you can find out who the saints are too. im just responding and later i am deleting these comments as i obviously said too much here.
Brodyn I'm pretty sure you're deleting what you said because what you said was dumb. No, Ian Curtis was not a holy figure, he was a bloke from Manchester.
Funny thing is when Jesus died god made the dead wake. When Ian Curtis killed himself God must have been so furious he caused Mount St. Helens to erupt.
you most definitely get the feeling that Bernard and Peter are really not comfortable talking about Ian. They miss their friend.
emma duncan And feel guilty.
Bernard was his best friend i think
@@mislavivkovic9996 he sure tried like one.
If there’s money in it Hooky will talk about anything.

Absolutely. I read his biography years back and my god I felt so sad for him, he was treated in a very cruel way by his mother at times.
Yes he definitely had some mental problems when he was younger hence the drug abuse and anger issues. He was misunderstood, but he seems much more at peace now.
The sound of his speaking voice just gives me chills. It does something unexplainable to me. Especially at the end when he says his name.
"What's your name?"
"Ian."
God....I felt melting down.
Listening to those voices on the tape recorder is very haunting
not really, Bernard Sumner has always sounded like an oik.
it will be 41 years on tuesday that we lost ian, i hope your at peace mate.
So sad that Ian couldn’t get the help he needed to save his life....23 too young to die.

Thats really scary hearing Ians voice ... but lovley at the same time.. quite moving.. to..
Wow! i’ve been doing alot or research on past life regression lately and actually thought about Ian Curtis. This blows my mind!
This is so interesting and minimalistic..actually I think it is completely heartbreaking the way he pronounces his own name...like with some kind of regret.
In the song "Something Must Break," he sings, "This life isn't mine." Also, in "New Dawn Fades," he sings, "Me, seeing me this time, hoping for something else."
I think the recurring doubt after having made a breakthrough is hard to deal with. New Order does indeed have a song titled "Doubts Even Here."
I thought it was kinda defiant
Does anyone have the full movie which this video is from? I thought I had heard that Barney hypnotised Ian who then revealed he had been a 16th century French peasant on his deathbed. Does anyone have more clips of Ian being hypnotised? Or is this the only one?
weird one I noticed: Alesteir Crowley wrote the Book of Laws when he was 28!
Odd that Bernard became able to hypnotize from reading a book. Seems like maybe they were into some deeper stuff.
That's what I'm thinking as well. A lot of their lyrics also seem to deal with biblical or mystical themes.
They were into deep stuff.
Ian was the sacrifice
@Vince negra2 that's what I've always thought they sacrificed him duh and suddenly new order pops out
@@susanatkins7388 another example of sacrifice-NO DOUBT

They've both got epilepsy too
not to mention Atrocity Exhibition

Curtis died when he was 23
Scott M and Caligula ruled for 3 years and 10 months. Joy Division were around for roughly that time...
That's what i thought at first. I remember reading someweher that Ian was very impressed with Kafka's short story "In The Penal Colony" and he took the title for the song "Colony".
1:50 that sounds quite spooky
First thing that came to my mind was that, interestingly enough, Aleister Crowley wrote The Book of the Law when he was 28...
Wow. You’re right.
if you read the whole transcript he was a young man living in southampton studying to be a solicitor
Holy…
that is so crazy! i just read about that in "torn apart, the life of ian curtis" really good book. R.I.P.Ian Curtis.
This is scary as fuck
Jesus was reading about law at night when he was 28 after working as a carpenter all day.
That was the first thing that came to mind
What a terrible tragedy for both of them.
Bernard's voice in the tape is haunting ,it scares the hell out of me!jaja
were can i find the documentary
He must of been thinking about the divorce... really interesting
What's your name? " Ian "
He was Kafka reincarnated :p
Kafka himself was Kleist reincarnated, whom you probably not know. Interestingly, all three had rather similar looks in a way...
So eerie. Which documentary is this from?
Its literally called Joy Division.
JamesonDoesStuff dude changed his title a long time ago was clickbait before
Melomania Oh, what your saying is your question now is irrelevant?
JamesonDoesStuff your answer is irrelevant now. Just like your life is a waste of your life.
Melomania Woah woah woah!!! No need to be a dick, I didn't mean to come out rude or anything.
It’s strange hearing him, he had such a gentle speaking voice. He sounded very shy here. It makes me sad.
How did Bernard even do the regression? Was he trained in hypnosis?
Well yeah, your memory is wiped when you incarnate into the Earth plane
@fearlesssockpuppet I think that may be the only one. This clip came from the Joy Division Documentary
Whats the documentary called?
Joy Division from 2007
Poor lads, believing in that.

Yeah its from the documentary called Joy Division from 2007
@@Pazuzu82 No, I think it's called Control idk
Actually nvm, control is a movie.
its wierd thought because he was never 28

this is really sad. but why was he reading a book about laws lol. the therapist seemed so confused
the therapist was Bernard
Oh, so you take notes at night? Okay. Well thats all we needed to know: better wake up so we can go down the pub…
This is the first thing I thought of... Hm...
The Book of Laws are the books of the New testament. the Old Law is the Old Testament.
Ian was a saint? Pretty sure he was cheating on his wife

By your logic anyone who has epilepsy is a saint. Bright flashing lights are not demons
