It is a heartbreaking story of his. I love Joy division. If Ian could only see what an influence he and the boys had on music. I will always miss Ian. 🖤
Thank you for this emotional tour in the places of Joy Division. Met their music in 1981 and the were accompaning me in all these years. Listen to their music, it is so great. Look at Control is a beautiful film.
My band rehearsed in the same warehouse as joy division. They were upstairs and we were below them. They used to rehearse every Sunday and the bass guitar was very loud.
Very sad story, I lost my Dad to suicide and I found him. It is something I think of every day, my Dad died in January 1990. I feel awful for his family and friends. Hopefully, Ian Curtis is free from his demons.
The house, to the right of the door is the living room. The window to the left is the other room where Ian would spend time writing lyrics, ect.. The kitchen is on the back of the house and joins onto the living room. You see the layout in the movie Control as they used the actual house for filming.. Love and miss Ian. Love this video! Thank you.
Such a sad story. I had a friend which had depression, we never knew, he always was smiling and never said a word about his condition, one day, he was found hanged in his bedroom, he was 18. Another person close of mine, tried to take her life 3 times, she also suffers from severe depression, again, she never shares her feelings with no one. Please guys, if you are suffering from depression, TALK to someone, that will make you feel much better and cherish the beautiful live you have. Depression is like a curtain blocking your sight and talking is like opening this curtain letting the light come in. 😊
Joy Division / New Order amazing music. Nothing like Joy Division. Recently nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they fell short of votes in 2023 hopefully the next time many of you will remember Ian and vote for them.
My mate's father introduced me to lots of incredible bands : Einsturzende Neubauten, Throbbing Gristle, Black Flag, Siouxsie and a bunch of italian oldschool postpunk/goth and punk hc ...i wasn't aware of Joy Division but he kept telling my mate to play Joy Division for me - that their records were his favourites. I wish i could shake hands and tell him how grateful i am, Unknown Pleasures and the singles literaly changed my life. This happened in the first months of 1993 - and i am still exploring the underground scenes of the 80s from all over the world.
I’ve been watching your content for years now, and Hollywood seems like a million miles away to me. I can’t believe that you were just in Macclesfield, only 60 miles away from my home. That blows my mind! 😊
Thank you for going to visit Ian Curtis. Up until now, I didn’t know where his final resting place is. Ian’s story still gets to me. Suicide is never the answer no matter how bad things seem. All things pass. How tragic and so sad that he felt that hopeless. I will always love Joy Division. I’m loving your European videos. Safe journeys to you both. RIP Ian. You won’t be forgotten. 🌹
He was a victim of suicide due to various reasons. He had suffered from epileptic disorder and the medication at that time was very poor, plus his disorder progressively got worse overtime due to the amount of pressure from constant touring as the band became more and more successful, he had failed marriage because he accidentally fell in love with another girl, causing his wife mistreated and such.
Joy Division were and are an incredible band. Ian Curtis was a great writer. one of my top 5. one of the things I really like about being a musician here in the UK is a share something with Joy Division. my first london gig was at the Hope & Anchor too, and I've always loved that fact as a fan.
Their music was very dark and depressing though. It is like being tortured when listening to. Or it's like watching a violent dark depressing film. Both don't make you feel good. I could never listen to that music.
I remember reading a piece about Kevin Cummings and this famous photoshoot. He said that as film was so expensive at the time, he really took care not to waste a single photo. That so many iconic images of JD come from this single session is a testament to Cummings' skill.
I have to say... The UK has some of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. And cemetery's. I also have to say... I never heard of this band nor the tragic outcome of their lead singer. My 🙏 go out to his family and all who knew him and fans alike. Thank you tho for bringing his memory alive again. I'm so going to watch the movie. control. To better understand ❤️🙏

One year ago me and my husband did the same path that you guys did in Manchester, amazing 🖤 we went also in London, Whitby for the festival, Liverpool, Chester, Bristol, etc and Scotland. What a trip!!!!
This video means a lot to me. I first heard Joy Division in 1988 when they released Substance which re-issued their debut "An Ideal For Living" ep & non-album singles together. Been a fan since then. I find it weird that Ian Curtis & Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) died on the same date May 18 & by the same method.
Hello Micheal And Jessica .. I hope your both enjoying, your visit to the uk 🇬🇧 sorry about the chilly 🥶 weather This is a very sad video about Ian Curtis .. it’s always Heartbreaking 💔 when someone dies so young
Grimm does it again: ADORE your scrupulous attention to detail, when matching-up scenes from the past with the hurly-burly present. You got everything right. Thank you, again, for the respectful tribute. I do hope you are able to pinpoint the 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' music video location, which felt eerie without sound...only an opening door, with the graffito 'Ian C' scratched into its surface. Crazy cool, indeed.
Interesting thing of note: Ian’s daughter was in the movie, Control. She can be seen yelling “fuck off” or something to that effect during the concert scene. I’ve also heard that Deborah Curtis was very helpful herself in the making of the film. 💜
I was in a band in 1979. We where rehearsing with another band for an up and coming gig. One of the band members had the keys to Joy Divisions rehearsal room. So in we went and had a look around. It was near Broughton baths Salford. where McDonald's is now. Or close by. An old mill long demolished.
Haha now way are you in my home town. Wish I’d have known I’d have paid you a visit. Yep, half my family are buried near Ian, I know his daughter Natalie. The shot in the movie Control of the crem where many of my friends and family went :( My mate lived next door to Ian’s house and says he woke up sometimes to crowds paying homage to Ian on anniversary’s. Very little of the film was shot here, the streets where he worked and his house are Macclesfield and a couple of other shots but other parts showing his flat was Nottingham because the flats he grew up in (Victoria) were demolished many years ago (thank god, it was a hellhole). Did make me laugh how Sam Riley and Samantha Morton spent time hanging out in pubs in Macc listening to the accents trying to get them right in time for the movie. Wished I’d have seen Samantha in the boozer - I’d have passed out from shock haha :) The employment exchange turned into the Driving Licence Test Centre. It’s harder I took my driving test. I also re created the bridge photos when I paid homage haha. It’s obligatory! The bridge is a few mins away from the site of The Russell Club where they did their first gigs
Thank you for talking about Ian Curtus and talking about Joy Division !! 🖤🦇🖤💀🖤🕯 Love Joy Division !! Their music always felt akin to my own soul. So glad you visited Ian!!!🖤🦇🖤
Excellent video. Ian Curtis was ahead of his time, a wonderful writer and performer. Manchester has produced so many wonderful bands from The Smiths, the Stone Roses, Oasis through to Joy Division. Manchester really has led the UK in music and some would say it started with Joy Division.
Good morning, Grimms, From Kentucky. Again your passion and storytelling are as good as any on RUclips. My thought is that both of your real folks who are following the dreams of your lives, nothing more than pure love of the story. Be safe
Never knew you are JOY DIVISION fans, my RESPECT has gone up for you A MILLION PERCENT, BEEN MY FAVOURITE BAND FOR YEARS NEVER EVER BE ANOTHER FRONTMAN LIKE THE GREAT, IAN KEVIN CURTIS, THANKS AGAIN, ALL THE BEST, WILL AND ELAINE, LEEDS, WEST YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND. 🇮🇲👍🇮🇲
Hi I live in Southampton England UK, joy Division were a bit part of my youth , as was New Order after Ian died , so glad your visiting our country, be safe enjoy guys Ryan and Anna ❤
One of the greatest and most pioneering bands in relatively recent history. No other band has been so influential as Joy Division with only two studio albums. I enjoy New Order too but I often wonder how Joy Division would sound like today if Ian was still around. Thanks for sharing this video from a huge Joy Division fan! Also, I'm really enjoying your England videos. Keep up the great work.
It's so sad to think that he killed himself because of his epilepsy and how worried he was about performing and (more importantly) possibly hurting his daughter. A few years later and medication could have helped him. Great video, thank you!
Guys, I've been watching you for years and I thought your Buddy Holly film was touching, but to see you both in my home town of Manchester covering the legend Ian Curtis has blown me away. He was a tragic soul, a genius. Thank you 💙
Even sadness history should not be forgotten. Mental and depression is painful. We ask Why, but we weren’t living his pain. The church was beautiful and seeing the areas he traveled was poignant. Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts. Be safe…❤
You were literally so close to my office. I wish I knew you guys were here. Lovely to see you enjoying our drizzly weather. Very apt for your visit to see Ian Curtis grave. Lovely to have you visit our little country
Delighted to see you both having such a great visit to Europe. I love Joy Division and always wondered what success they would've had globally had he lived.
I can’t believe you’ve just been to Manchester. It would have been amazing to meet you and maybe show you around a bit . You’re doing an amazing job. Keep up the good work 🖤
Hey guys… I’m blown away!! Not only was I born and live in Manchester but I work in Macclesfield!! I can’t believe you visited my local area. Manchester music is the best and as a huge fan of the grim life collective it’s amazing your so close!! Thank you always for your awsome content!!
@@paulmcdonough1093 Ill give you the Beatles but I dont think you can compare any other...The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Oasis, the list goes on! Im a big fan of a lot of Liverpool bands though, Great City for Music!!
Grimm life does such an amazing job! Lots of details and history and respect for what we watch. I have enjoyed this channel for many years from the horror, to videos like these
Thank you for this. Joy Division were so influential nationally and on the Manchester scence. The paved the way for so many. Also check out the film 24 Hour Party People
Such a tragic story. 💔 I love Joy Division and would like to visit Ian's grave someday but don't know if that'll ever happen. Thank you for taking us there with you.
This is awesome: not just Curtis’ grave, but a great tour around my home City: the band means so much to us here. It’s a pity you didn’t make it Stockport: lots more pictures, and Strawberry Studios where Unknown Pleasures was recorded - about 12 miles out of Manchester. The Boardwalk was legendary and just around the corner from the even more legendary Hacienda.
Brilliant video. I used to work in Macclesfield and parked my car outside Ian Curtis's house where he hanged himself. I also visited his grave. A very surreal experience. I live in Sandbach not far from Macclesfield. Lots of historical and medieval spots to explore around here.
Oh wow. I never would have dreamed you’d take us to Ian Curtis & Joy Division sites. This one really flew all over my heart. I’ve always found their music & their history to be gut-wrenching, there’s a place inside of us that they take us where no others possibly can. I can’t even explain it. I hesitated to watch this because I knew it would hurt, but I’m so glad I did. After a beautiful sunny midwest Autumn day yesterday, as I’m watching this today the sky is overcast & the air is misty. Apropos. Thank you for this, Grimms.🖤 Jessica you are absolutely beautiful, even in the midst of a cold England day.🙂
Imagine all the Music we didn’t get to hear after we lost him. It’s definitely dark and takes you to a dark place, I listened on repeat to every song a couple of years ago when I went through my divorce. No wonder I was suicidal 🤷🏻♂️. But I found hope and life is good today🙏
Joy Division is one of my favorite bands from the 80s. You guys cover the best stuff! Love your England stories and adventures this season. Your spirit and energy are always magnetic...you're both so cute together. I look forward to every video.
Fantastic music that defined an iconic movement in Manchesters music legacy… born & bred Mancunian lass here that loves music & Manchester ❤ thank you for covering this one ☝🏻 Jess & Michael x
"Surrender to self-preservation From others who care for themselves A blindness that touches perfection But hurts just like anything else" Thank you for this video. ❤Ian Curtis. Happy Halloween!
Joy Division never got any air play in Calgary . I only knew about it because someone I knew back then listened to them . Yes, the music was very dark . I only listened to them one time. I also heard some of the elements of their music in Nirvanas music . But not to the point of the bleakness of Joy Division . The person I knew back then , took their own life on New Years Eve 1999. We used to go to high school together . He always seemed very depressed, even back then . He hung himself in a barn on the family farm . It’s a terrible thing when someone takes their own life, especially leaving behind a child and a wife . Those pillars of that church you were in reminded me of that ancient city of Petra . Those columns in front of what was known as “the bank”. Thank you for yet another educational vlog . 👍👍👍
Great video !!! I love Joy Division, also love New Order. Its weird, I know but I somehow feel comforted listening to Joy Division because I know hey I am not alone, someone else feels this as well. Thank you for sharing your experiences, I got to see Ian's grave when I was in the UK in March, It was a sombre and very sad feeling seeing it.
Dead Souls is one of my all time favorite songs!!! Joy Division are easily among my top 5-10 favorite bands. Thank you for sharing this!!!!!!! You guys rock!!!❤
Thanks for making this video. Joy Division was such an important band to me growing up. I still will put Unknown Pleasures on my record player at least once a month.
I live and breathe joy division from the first time I saw them on there last concert at high hall Birmingham 2nd may 1980 from then on I collected everything to do with this band I also visited is grave twice there will never be another Ian Curtis or joy division I'm 62 and I still play there music r.i.p ian
Man, I really enjoyed watching this video, this must’ve come up in my feed because I’m a huge Joy Division Fan and I’m watching about anything I can find about the band. Never forget that dreadful day when I heard the news about Ian’s passing on the radio, while we had a break practicing with my band. I’m pretty sure we were listening to John Peel that day, completely shocked and boiling our eyes out with Atmosphere playing on the radio. I’d love to do what you guys did, visiting all the places from the photo shoot and Ian’s grave. Might just do exactly that very soon indeed 😅. Looking forward to more from you, I’ll leave a subscription for sure 👍. Cheers from Germany
The more I watch this channel, the more I appreciate their content. Great stuff. Thought provoking. I also enjoy the breadth of content such as the Halloween Disney stuff.
Travelling to Manchester in December to see The Chameleons for two nights and going on a tour which includes this grave. I'm going to be devastated. Gotta decide what to write on the iron bridge (smiths) too. Thank you for uploading. 🖤
Amazing to see you both in my hometown of Manchester , I am a stone mason and made a lot of the newer memorials in the Macclesfield cemetery you visited, the cremation stones were mainly made from York stone, and you lease the plot for so many years “usually” , I love my work and making the last piece for the families 😉 enjoy your stay ❤
Bruv, Ian Curtis is one of our fallen heros. His music maybe dark to some but it's the sound of an age to others.

Ive thought that too. If Ian had known what an inspiration he would become, he may have kept himself alive.

Aye..whatever, son:))
Joy Division's music is timeless.
I don’t think the music was sad or depressing. I think it’s beautiful and emotive. Great video !! Love Joy Division !! Rip Ian
Stunning band. I highly recommend So This Is Permanence the book with all his lyrics
A lot of Ian's lyrics were definitely "depressing", but I agree they were still beautiful.
You do have to be in the right mood for it though!
24 Hours is kind of depressing in retrospect.

I think his illness was the main reason, and that wasn't going to just pass, but they probably have better meds for it now.

Apropos. Thank you for this, Grimms.🖤
Jessica you are absolutely beautiful, even in the midst of a cold England day.🙂
Imagine all the Music we didn’t get to hear after we lost him.
My favourite singer and band ❤ Ceremony! This is going to be epic! Hope you to still enjoy the north. ❤ Rip Ian

What could've been...
Thank you for sharing your visit with us.
Thank you so much, you honnered him very well. Ian Curtis RIP, you will always be missed.
You two visit the best places!! So glad I found you.
My base level depression is so deep, I find Joy Division quite uplifting.
"Surrender to self-preservation
From others who care for themselves
A blindness that touches perfection
But hurts just like anything else"
Thank you for this video. ❤Ian Curtis. Happy Halloween!
Isolation,isolation,isolation,isolation
Control is one of my all-time favourite films. It’s phenomenally good and the cast was absolutely terrific ❤
You're the greatest story teller! So happy to see what else comes from your England trip!
Great video. Great band. Yes the weather here has taken an unusual turn for the worst the last couple of weeks.
Dead Souls is one of my all time favorite songs!!! Joy Division are easily among my top 5-10 favorite bands. Thank you for sharing this!!!!!!! You guys rock!!!❤
He went to our old school called Kings in Macclesfield. We had the same teacher called Graham Wilson.
Another amazing video. Safe travels in our beautiful country ❤
Thanks for making this video. Joy Division was such an important band to me growing up. I still will put Unknown Pleasures on my record player at least once a month.
The whole situation with Ian Curtis is just so heartbreaking. You can just feel his suffering, and it's very heavy.

One of my favorite videos you’ve filmed so far! This one is special. Thanks
So cool you guys are in town! Hope you had a great time here. Love from Manchester 🐝
Been waiting for this video! Loved Joy Division and especially New Order!
The more I watch this channel, the more I appreciate their content. Great stuff. Thought provoking. I also enjoy the breadth of content such as the Halloween Disney stuff.
Amazing video! Ian Curtis never forget! Love u guys
Travelling to Manchester in December to see The Chameleons for two nights and going on a tour which includes this grave. I'm going to be devastated. Gotta decide what to write on the iron bridge (smiths) too. Thank you for uploading. 🖤
What a band "Second Skin" what a track.
Been watching your channel for years, this is my favorite one so far, love Joy Division. Touching from a distance, further all the time.
