(Also known as the Radio Lancashire interview)
Recorded 28th February 1980 at Preston Warehouse by Steve Barker from BBC Radio Blackburn.
Broadcasted in March of 1980 & in 1988.
Steve Barker:
"The interview was done late afternoon early evening in the background of the soundcheck at the Preston Warehouse. The interview was for the Spinoff show which went out each Tuesday and Thursday evening on Radio Blackburn (now Radio Lancashire). Obviously its a long time ago and I don't recall much detail other than the fact that Ian was very cooperative and friendly, recognised that Spyda was a non-professional and treated him well. I just sat by their side and held the UHER reel-to-reel portable tape machine. The interview was edited by my producer Ian Cook for later broadcast. I may have the tapes somewhere but cannot locate them easily (I did an interview with Jimi Hendrix in 1967 and lost that cassette!) Ian did not show any signs of disturbance or depression, obviously he was not one of those loud, gregarious people - and seemed very quiet spoken and sensitive, serious about his work".
Thanks to Mark Gale from Joy Division Central who interviewed Steve Barker.
Thanks to SB who shared 1988 broadcast.
Cleaned and mixed by Fage, July 2018.

Ian sounds so sensitive and gentle...
He was so young, I really think he just needed a few years to come out the other side of his deep depression. I was similarly depressed but my attempts failed and now it’s easier for me to deal with the impulses. Still would rather be dead than alive but I can’t do that to loved ones.
It wasn't just the depression, but the Epilepsy and the side effects from the meds he was taking to try to combat it. A poor tortured soul. I love JD but it also makes me melancholy when I listen to Ian and the band, but it is a good melancholy, if that makes sense.
I hope you can continue to see the world in vibrant colors. Take care of yourself my friend.

His wife said he was depressed and planning to kill himself since before he developed epilepsy. As a depressive, the original poster is spot on in his assessment.
He sounds like someone I knew but it's a good feeling. I wished there was footage of Ian actually being interviewed.
He is so soft spoken. So gentle, mo wonder his affliction took the final toll on him 😭
'it's pointless making comparisons.' indeed.
because no one compares
I've always found it interesting that Curtis's speaking voice is higher than his singing voice, for most people its the other way around.
I completely agree with Ian when he says he cannot like a certain band because there’s things he likes and also doesn’t like about them. I’m the same I say I like a lot of bands but in reality I probably like a handful of there songs.. joy division went on to be a game changer, unknown pleasures is the only perfect album I’ve listened to in my life, every song is special to me. Thank you Ian for creating the most powerful and brilliant music to ever be created!
Closer is better than Unknown Pleasures by a long way
@@dreamangus1505 disagreed
@@dreamangus1505 I don’t think musically closer is a better album
I agree with you about unknown pleasures, apart from Interzone which is terrible.
@@Chris-xd9uv interzone is not terrible...
I liked how he mentions Bauhaus I love listening to both
Hadn't heard this before. Just baffling to think he would be dead less than three months later. But then it was baffling to the people he saw the day before.
Don't give the Americans any ideas - they will say he was murdered
Ian always seemed like a troubled but really really nice guy. I would have loved to just sit down and have a pint with him.
....browse his record collection...
Absolutely amazing it's so much clearer ! 👍🏻
hadn't realized how manc he actually was, lovely to hear him.
“Two tracks on that that won’t be on an album or single” Atmosphere and Dead Souls........oh my god.......
Weird, Ian sounds just like Bernard with similar vocal habits and tone
Bobbical sounds more like Stephen if you ask me
@@jamesonjaksch4883 makes sense given how they're both from Macclesfield
Ian's voice is deeper though, isn't it?
It’s easy to see why the other band mates never fully suspected he’d commit suicide. He sounds totally stable here and I’m sure that’s how he was with everyone. Such a shame.
They never really talked about mental health and how you were feeling back then it was all taboo.
At least he became a legend overnight... literally!
Suicide is often a spur of the moment thing. A rash decision in the middle of the night. Something like that...
@@Wildrover82 I suppose it comes down to that, but in his case and most cases I would say, it was a build up of many factors. Epilepsy, strong medication, failing marriage, pressures of the band, etc…
This def wasn’t something spur of the moment. I dunno if he planned on hanging himself in the manner he did but it’s clear by the lyrics that he was suicidal.
I love his cute little Northern accent so much!
clearest version of these talks i've heard, thank you!!
A pleasant chap.
Thanks
A articulate, highly intelligent young man. A greater loss to culture even than Cobain or Hendrix, perhaps, because at least we had them for 27 years, and those two great American musicians produced far more material in their almost-as-brief lives than Ian managed to.
Cobain was a talentless hack, worshipped by the junkie brigade. He was a victim of bad parenting, and the fact that instead of a housewife, he had cuntney love as a partner.
like Ian says in this video, it's pointless making comparisons really.
@@rickallen9099 I wonder how many more hits he could have made, or couldn't
Just look at the bones of the 3rd record!!

Ian by all accounts could put a tune together so ???
Nirvana were a thrift store Pixies.
He does sound together but anybody can sound together at any one given point in time. It doesn't mean that they are coping with life as a whole.
Its spooky hearing from a man knowing that months later he would commit suicide.
Wow.. hes such a deep thinker and sensitive soul. He says he likes to write about relations n how to cope with it...didn't he just... his nervous laugh after talking about ..were going to America. Also when the interviewer asks when do you think joy division will end it's like he picked up on Ians vibe of the end is coming soon '
*10. Where do you see or want Joy Division to end or go to?*
Ian: I just want us to carry on the way we are really. Basically, we want to play and enjoy playing. I think when stop doing that I think, well, that will be the time to pack it in, that'll be the end.
In a way Joy Division did carry on after Ian's death... but with a different name to the band... New Order!
lo que daría por un video footage de 144p de Ian hablando y mirando a la camara riendo y sintiéndose incómodo tal vez... lo daria todo
he sounds so sweet 🥺
One day before their North American Tour...
That's honestly sad.
I wish he made it over to America.
The quality of the songs is phenomenal.

His view, on his musical status sounds a lot like Manzarek’s view.
You can’t be categorized.. when you are of the music.
Ian’s Mancunian accent is so cute 😍
He wasn't mancunian
I'm Mancunian, he has a hint of Manc, but he sounds more Lancashire to me.
@@imgoingtocountdownfromthir4580 yeah I'm lancs and he sounds more Bolton or Preston

@@imgoingtocountdownfromthir4580 what part of Manchester. I went out with a stunner in the 90s from Gorton. She's was mint. Broke my heart.

It wasn't called Radio Blackburn it was called Radio Lancashire and was based in Blackburn. They also had an office in the Guild Hall in Preston. I remember it well.
No it was Radio Blackburn Only became Radio Lancs in 1981
Radio Blackburn I'm from Blackburn
Then you'll know it was called Radio Lancashire not Radio Blackburn
Glad he liked The Tights!
I'd like to hear if someone could remaster this using AI.

Why? Because you dislike her?
@@MariaSandoval-zu5uy the way she portrays him to the public vs what his family + friends actually knew about him

@@MariaSandoval-zu5uy and I don’t trust someone who was portrayed by multiple people to be quite controlling, so his wife isn’t a reliable source
He was portrayed quite narssaistic towards Debbie, and a few others in the biography she wrote. I found myself cursing as I read it. I still love Joy Division!
