RIP Ian you were missed.
I'd love to see you react to one of their faster or angrier numbers, "Transmission" being the obvious one but also "Disorder" (my personal favourite), "Interzone", "Atrocity Exhibition", "She's Lost Control", "Wilderness"-they could be intense both in a downbeat, beautiful way and an uptempo, visceral way. And then you have the stuff in between like "Dead Souls", "Day of the Lords", "Ceremony", "Autosuggestion"… god, they had so many great tunes. And so did New Order! Holy cow.
As for what "Atmosphere" is about, I think it was inspired by Ian's relationship with his wife falling apart, sadly. That feeling of knowing someone so well that you don't need words to communicate, and yet for that reason feeling hit all the harder when they say nothing.
Check out "Transmission", it's a good one. And if you you catch the video of Ian dancing while performing it, it's great, no one danced like that...
Atmosphere was used in the ending of Control. I hope you 2 Googled and educated yourselves on Ian Curtis and Joy Division. What he went through in just his short life. Ian put to words what so many of us were going through in 1976 through 1980.
new dawn fades is pure gothic and dark and heart and soul and atrocity exhibtion
Noverty the b-side of Transmission is an overlooked jewel, but probably Shadow Play is my favs.
She's lost control is a brilliant tune from joy division.
All songs by Joy division are full of depression and serious, wonderful songs with very good lyrics
This is a band I ignored for ages. I heard Love Will Tear Us Apart on its release and though thats ok, but never took much notice. A friend of mine bought be the Best of in around 2005 and I put it on my iPod at the time and though no more of it. I was on a random shuffle one day and this song came on. It never occured to me who it was and I listen to Atmosphere for the first time in its entirty and then checked who it was by. I was shocked to see it was Joy Division. It hit me hard. I absolutely loved it. Then I listened to the entire Best Of and was so impressed. So many great songs, but none hit he as hard as Atmosphere. This band inspired a whole Independent Music movement. So incredibly influential, especially in the UK
Thanks so much for your interesting comment. To me, it really symbolizes this channel. Hearing/seeing some songs in a different time and different light and having a completely different take. The wonderful thing about recorded music is that it's always forgiving . . . always ready when we are. - Greg
Would love to see you do Disorder - think you’ll absolutely love it!
This is my favourite from Joy Division.
Not for little kids you have get around the mind and listen to music get into what music gives you don’t think negative thoughts love what you hear
One of my Favourite Joy Divison Songs... Loving the choices of bands you are reacting too on this channel. Defo got a few recommendations.... Ive never seen a reaction on YT for a band called - British Sea Power. Songs from the first Album, "The Decline of Bristish Sea Power", Tracks from that Album to react too, " Carrion", "Remember Me", " Apologies to Insect Life" (im trying not to list every song from that album. Still going today has a strong cult following and a little eccentric
Thanks!
That's definately the best way to listen to JD lie back shut your eyes n enjoy!
Pop your headphones on too!
A Manchester band where I live and was born. Can be dark, but art can be.
Would love to see you guys react to Take The Long Road and Walk It by The Music, a band from Leeds. I think you'd love it!
Will look into this band. Thanks. - Greg
Brilliance!🎉
Joy Division was my soul music ,but a band named after the Jewish women made to work in a brothel in concentration camp"the joy Division are never going to be poppy!
Didn't know that about the name. Wow. - Greg
Sticking with the theme, No love lost is an absolute must.
You probably have to check out a lot more Joy Division if you want to get under the skin of British music........She's Lost Control/ Transmission/ Dead Souls/ These Days - you've got more work to do.....!
lol...like 300 song reactions to British made music on this channel. And more to come! - Greg
@@intothemusic908 Looking forward to it.....!
Joy Division are even before my time, but I did get to see Peter Hook and The Light, the bass player's band, perform essentially Joy Division's greatest hits live a few years ago. Not quite the same, but magnificent and moving nonetheless.
Obviously there is quite a difference, but the producer and Ian listened to Frank Sinatra to get into the crooning mood for this song. What surprises me, is that we're probably around the same age, but you've never really heard JD before. I bought this song as a 12" single when it came out, but I was a 688/Atlanta kid in the late 70's. I just thought JD were more widely known in the states even in 79/80. Like other posters have said, there are faster, thrashier songs for you to sample. Transmission is a pop guitar song, driven by the bass. There are tons of British bands from this time period, but JD definitely stands out. The Fall are my other love from the north, but they're not so easy to dive into- distinct sounds that roll in stages 79-83, 83-90, 90-96, etc.
"Twenty Four Hours" and "New Dawn Fades" might be on your list of serious songs by this outstanding band.
Disorder is their most accessible song
Actually, I always thought John Peel played Atmosphere on announcing Ian Curtis death - but he didn't. Here is that very announcement.

Dead souls got listen to it
She's lost control and Transmission are both great songs. It worth listening to Atmosphere followed by New Order's Ceremony back to back and follow that with Everything's Gone Green.
great band that became new order after the death of Ian Curtis . try crystal by new order great track
This song was stolen by U2: Hybrid between Bad, and The room in the hearthbreak hotel, very nice tribute to Joy Division !!!
Down beat vocals, this was recorded near to his suicide -no one listened or heard his pleads.
