I'm on my third Subaru, a 2024 Outback Limited that I bought for my wife. All the benefits of a Subaru and now with a lot of high-end appointments that make it feel more like a luxury car. Also,, in line with what Scotty says, the new CVT is worlds better than the one in my 2012 Outback. Doesn't feel like a CVT at all and great acceleration from the 182 HP normally aspirate boxer engine.

We have a Subaru Forester (better all around visibility than the Outback) - the most favorite car that have owned (well, the spouse drives it mostly). The 2nd fav is a Toyota 4Runner - that one was mine to drive, had 5 spd manual, hi-lo 4wd, steel skid plates underneath, very solid vehicle.
The Subarus are just a million times superior to EV nonesense

have owned 3 subaru vehicles. as I bought each quality went down. last one cost me over three years in repairs as the original purchase price. all Subaru would say is "it should not have done that". at 3500 mile first oil change for example told me the 3 headlights were out, needed breaks and would need tires within 3000 miles again this was with only 3500 miles on it. went down hill from there...

Regret selling it to this day. Handled great and that AWD is the only way to go even if you're not in snow country because it is so stable on wet roads.

I recently purchased a 2023 Forester wilderness edition. Overall, I really like the car but the best I can say for the mush box transmission is that for a CVT it does not suck. Also, in my city driving I get about 18mpg. The best I got on a long x country is about 26. It does have 9.2" of ground clearance and handles well off road to the limited extent I have used it. It is pleasant to drive on long trips, has a good quality of road feel and handling.

We rented a ‘23 Forester Wilderness for a week in New England last year, our first real experience with the (any) CVT and NA 2.5. Was really impressed with the powertrain, ride, EyeSight, comfort and handling - mostly- kind of tippy at the limit. Based upon that we bought a ‘24 Impreza RS, noticeably better as far as overall performance and we get 26/36 mpg. We’ll do snow driving but never off road.

Between my wife and me and our two daughters we've owned or own 6 Subaru vehicles (mostly Foresters) and will most likely continue to own Subaru vehicles in the future. They're also one of the few reasonably priced manufacturers that rate as high as the luxury brands from Consumer Reports. The only Subaru we weren't happy with was a 2008 Outback that gave us a lot of problems. It was one of the (if not the) first year they were built in the US as opposed to Japan.

Families first subaru was an '89 wagon thing with air shocks to lift it back when hauling a heavy load, such a cool thing to see as a kid. Currently Drive a 2010 forester which we'd upgrade from but it just wont die or have any problems.

No other vehicle I looked at had the rear passenger space like the Crosstrek does. It doesn’t feel squashed or a compromise. I’ve sat back there myself and it practically feels full space as if someone was up front. My knees don’t even come close to touching the front seats and plenty of space to stretch out. And the Toyota awd on them is some type of a freak show. Already, shockingly been marching right past RAV4s stuck. So i went with the king of awd.

I bought my fourth generation 2012 Subaru Outback with the 3.6R six cylinder engine and the Jatco 5 speed automatic transmission brand new and currently have 110k miles on it.
When I downshift with the paddle shifters, it might take half a second to downshift. It can be slow.
On a trip involving air travel, at my destination, I rented a fifth generation Outback with the CVT.
As an enthusiast, I was amazed to find the CVT far more responsive than the Jatco AT in my car.
The fifth generation mimicked a six speed automatic. Both upshifts and downshifts were immediately positive and direct. They mimicked quick AT upshifts and downshifts exactly.
With six faux speeds, I used the paddle shifters constantly to downshift on New Hampshire’s up and down hills. The downshifts were immediate and positive in the way I described above. With six speeds instead of five, finding the right gear for the right amount of engine braking was much preferable to my car.
Driving uphill, stepping down on the accelerator resulted in immediate downshifts. Step down a little harder and the CVT would promptly drop another gear. The AT in my car is not as quick to downshift as the CVT was.
In short, the CVT was better at being a responsive AT than the actual AT in my own car.
The CVT was so good, I am not sure why people continue to bad mouth them. In a blind test, most people would likely assume it is an AT.
Were I to purchase a new Outback, and as someone who loves to use the paddles, I would have no qualms about it having a CVT.

Technically modern "redlines" aren't the true highest rpm an engine can reach. Most are 500 to 1000rpm below what the engine can actually handle before problems occur. And as for the break-in, it's better to not always run the same rpm, so a couple WOT runs here and there isn't as big of a deal as driving 60 mph on cruise for 2 hours. Varying revs is better.

The Forester is being heavily discounted right now, because the all-new 2025 Forester will be out in about 3 months, according to the dealer near me. It will have all the latest tech, unlike the current version.

As I understand it it will also have a big, slow, distracting screen. Loved my 2020 Outback Limited XT (my 4th Outback) but the lease buyout price plus the screen meant get a Forester Limited before the big screen goes in. I have a 2023 and my wife has a 2024 (but no cd player in the latter)...

They're not doing Wilderness trim on Foresters for 2025. It's likely those prices to remain, or perhaps go higher, as we get through year. One of the reasons I specifically got the '24 was because I didn't want the an 11" ipad (basically) smashed into the dash. I like tactile climate controls in general...but someday if the screen goes out I can still defrost my windshield.

Scotty- What do you think of pricing on the '24 Tacomas. I paid $27K for a new '16 2dr Access cab, 4cyl, 4wd, with ps, pb & windows. What I heard is the same truck {24 model) is over $35K and a fully loaded 4dr TRD is north of $65K. Will they sell? Sounds crazy.

I went with the base Subaru Forester because people in my family are tall is one of the rectangular shape of the vehicle allows it to have larger Windows which I prefer. Certain generations of the RAV4 I thought were ugly. The current generation RAV4 looks cool but it's not for me. I also like my screen flush with the dashboard not getting out of the top of it.

We still have a US Postmaster whose stated goal is to destroy the Post Office so everyone has to pay a fortune to a private company to ship anything. Can't expect the Post Office to be anything but terrible until he's gone. If you've ever shipped, say, a box of books that's $8 through the Post Office and $40 through UPS or $55 through FedEx, you wouldn't be so hostile to the USPS.

I drove a 2011 Subaru Legacy Limited for a little over 7 years putting 36,000 miles on it per year. Sold it with 275,000 miles. Great car! It used some oil but other than that it was great. Absolutely no problems with the CVT.

The Subaru Forester Symmetrical AWD is great but the major issue is engine oil leaks. A bad head engine gasket or coolant leaks to the engine when it hits 100 miles. They have not fixed it and no recalls to fix it. Do you see a 500-mile plus Subaru vs a Toyota?

Bought a 2022 outback Limited. Love the car but it was starving for power. So I bought a 2023 outback wilderness again I love it. Here again, we have a but and that is with the wilderness rear end gearing it suffers poor gas mileage. Fast forward to 2025, if Subaru changes the platform dramatically, I will probably trade in and buy the outback touring. Never was a Subaru guy, but I have to say once you get one you’re not going to want to change. At 87, it took me a long time to find my home at Subaru. 😊
