    I bought a '21 Subaru Crosstrek last year, but mine is a trim level lower which means the smaller 2.0 boxer. But it has the 6-speed manual, and as long as you keep the RPMs above 2K it's not so bad in the acceleration department. Plus I got 34MPG on a road trip from Massachusetts to Colorado and back. Even drove up Pike's Peak and through lots of other mountains. I like the fact it's basically a lifted hatchback instead of something trying to look like a truck.

      @Jez4prez1 Год назад +11

      Subaru is still fully independent, but they have a partnership with Toyota, so share on a few things. Toyota owns a large stake (but not majority) in Subaru, and Subaru owns a stake in Toyota (a smaller % given how large Toyota is). This partnership has seen the BRZ/86 as a joint project (but Subaru did almost all of it). And it has also seen the Solterra as another joint project (but Toyota did almost all of it). Subaru also manufactured Camry's. And there is probably other things I'm missing. Anyhow, this connection has benefited them, I'm sure. But Subaru has also been very well managed in recent years.
      Subaru actually is one of the few small car companies that still has independence (operates independently) and that has been rather successful in recent times (and maintained its position). Most of the other small independent car companies (in Subaru's cohort / timeline of companies) have basically been fully bought out over the past 10-20 years, or have been in decline versus new rising competition etc. Subaru is an interesting company since they're small but have advanced manufacturing capability. They even manufacture Boeing AH-64 Apache attack helicopters for the Japanese military, and parts for commercial airliners etc.

      head gaskets can still fail if there’s either a defective head gasket or incorrect maintenance but the head gasket is no longer prone to fail. FA series engines are fairly solid if you leave them stock. EJ across the board is more likely to fail but it’s not as common as they used to be. I had a 2011 Outback with just under 200k miles, had no head gasket issues since I was using the proprietary coolant additive.

I knew a machinist friend who made me a special with a socket adapter to place in the timing sprockets. I also used a spring tool, to adjust the belt tension to specs. I had a couple of crackheads, I was able to find an automotive store that sent them out to a special truck shop that repaired them. The customers were so suprised that their cylinder heads could be repaired. I never ever had a come back, or complaint. They really are good cars, especially the manual ones. Good pickup, excellent gas mileage, those cars would go through snow unbelievable easy.

Finally when it was out of warranty it backfired and blew out my catalytic converter. Then their mechanic told me it was backfiring because the (he called it) anti-backfire valve was clogged. He replaced the converter and the valve and no more backfire. They said it was out of warranty so I had to pay the whole amount. I even went up the chain in the corporation and sent proof of my reports. They said too bad so sad you lose. I will never buy one again.

The RAV4 was too expensive for what it was. The CRV was also out of my price range. The Mazda cx50 is nice but MPG was meh and it was a new car, and not made in Japan. The cx 30 was tiny. I've grown to love the CVT in my wife's 2016 Forester. Mated to a NA engine that's going to give a linear power delivery, they work fantastic. There is the slightest hint of lag with the system switching from economy to 'all the torque, now!' when you get your foot on it, but nowhere near as some of the complaints I've seen from other manufacturers CVT systems. Almost made me consider getting the 3.6L Legacy sedan with the CVT. However, mated to a turbocharged engine, I can see the frustration of adding more lag and there's nothing sporty about imaginary gears.

    I got a 2023 model Crosstrek sport, the start stop seems to be better, not sure for earlier models but if you push the break down more the start stop occurs but if you slightly push it down to the point where you just stop, it won't turn off. it feels more in control of the stop and start. Which I like! :D

    Honestly... Subaru has been really good for a really long time. It's a real blessing to work on them compared to most other cars, and on old SOHC Subarus the timing belt job is pretty easy from my experience (and not that much worse for the WRXs and such).

    I legit did two Subaru timing belts. They weren't super difficult, it was way easier than my Cruze. Both Subarus ran just fine when I got done!

    Great car! Our RAV4 Hybrid does have rocking motion on undulating roads, which are not too common where I live. I like its eCVT better than our Forester's CVT. Our RAV4 doesn't get stuck in the mud, but my wife says I'm a stick-in-the-mud :)

    Bang for your buck, the Subaru has a great awd system. I currently have the Impreza and with winter tires it's a beast in the winter. I would take the Subaru on bad winter roads over my one ton 4x4 any day of the week.
    For the record I got 486 000km out of my previous Subaru.

    I have a 07 Indiana made Outback…love the car! Had it for a year and I drive the hell out of it and deliver pizza for a living. I do have an appointment to change the timing belt and plugs but the gaskets are fine and the 4 speed can still be fun when you shift it manually. And I’m in Winnipeg so we’re already drowning in snow🙄

    Scotty, Love the videos! As a Salesman for Subaru, I do feel obligated to let you know that Sport is a mid range trim level on all of our models. Limited is the top end on Crosstrek.

      Off the record: would you recommend the crosstrec? Trying to decide between this and mazda cx5

    • @loganthrone1173
      @loganthrone1173 4 месяца назад +1

      @joeldiaz5857 trim for trim the crosstrek is much more equipped than the cx5. Mazda is going for a "minimalist" design. Which some people love. But if im spending 20k+ on a car i want the new features. Plus, Subaru's EyeSight driver saftey system is the best out there aside from Tesla, in my opinion. Eyesight isnt as agressive in its control as most other companies systems, but it still does its job very well.

    Scotty, it's easy to turn off the start/stop, it's just a simple button on the left hand side of the dash, by the steering wheel! Oh and BTW, the ground clearance for a RAV4 is 8.4 inches, the Crosstrek is HIGHER at 8.7 inches!

      Don't try and push the brake pedal thru the floor and the start / stop won't activate. Even if you forget to push the button. 😉

    Subaru handling dynamics are definitely better on the move. It could be the symmetrical all wheel drive or their vehicle dynamics programming but it just works. Vehicle movements are predicable when it's sliding while moving, especially useful in slippery surfaces like snow.

    My company rented a new rav4 for me to get home after a hitch on the tugboat i work on. Drove from Phili to Boston in a blizzard and was drivin 80 the whole way and i loved the way she handled. Ive never driven a Subaru but i used to own an 01 audi quattro and i still have no complaints about the rav4. I own a awd Toyota Sienna and also handles good in the snow. Obviously not an off-road suv but she works good in the bad weather

    Got a Subaru Impreza 2009 manual with a 1.5litre engine. Love the car. It’s a zippy little car that with a blast to drive. Get decent gas mileage as well and the sound the engine makes when I rev it out is pretty nice.

      @@xladypanda-chanx1965 Not surprising. The new Toyota electric is about as much as Subaru is bringing to the table. Would love to see them get on the ball with plug-in hybrids and electric versions of their standard models.
