One thing about the R50 that not many people point out is the inability to use a regular flash with it. If you pay close attention, it doesn't have the contacts to allow a regular flash to trigger. Instead, you need to use Canon's new proprietary flash. So, a hobbyist thinking about using flash photography on a budget should still consider the M50 for that purpose.

A couple of years ago I "downgraded" from a well used 7D to an M2 and then an M50. I have a nice, but not complete, assortment of M lenses, as well as my EF L telephotos. I thought even though Canon was killing off the M series, I could go for quite a while before I would have to upgrade to an $$R$$...with the R50 it seems like it might not be as far away as I thought!
I'm a kickboxer and jiujitsu practitioner. At my gym we tend to record using our phones in order to go back and reference certain moments in training and offer advice, critique, etc. Lately we've been having issues where our phones are simply unable to capture certain moments with the clearness that we'd like, usually due to the fact we're moving too fast for the iphone 10 or so to be able to catch the moments we really want to focus on. I've been looking at getting a dedicated camera for recording as well as for my own personal foray into photography. What sort of specs should I be looking at and what camera would would you suggest?
Hey man, that's sounds pretty cool! It's difficult to recommend anything specific without knowing a budget. That said, if clarity is the issue, I would look for something that can record in 4k at 60fps and then pair it with a decent optic. The thing is, it can get really expensive quick. Maybe consider a camera that is not super new that way you can save a bit buying it second hand. Hopefully this is helpful
Hii I'm new to cameras and I was wondering why you shouldn't use the HDR PQ? I recently got the R50 and have been seeing some videos about shooting HDR PQ but no one mentions the why not, if someone could please explain to me the reason please✨
Oh snap, I wonder why YT isn’t sharing my videos? Odd. Appreciate you letting me know. But yeah man, the little R50 is kinda nuts for the price. I really dig it.
I'm a new parent and want a camera for taking photos of my newborn as she grows up. I came across the M50 and seems like I'll get good quality photos. Do you have any other recommendations
If you are trying to take photos of your new baby (congratulations by the way!) I think the Canon M50 is a great choice. Consider buying the 22mm f2 lens to pair with it.
Get the R50. It has better autofocus, which is exactly what you want for shooting children that are *always* moving. But get it with a prime lens (RF 16mm f2.8 or 24mm f1.8). Starting with a prime lens will help you become a better photographer much faster. If you have a specialist camera store near you, have them explain the prime lens thing to you (skip the general electronics stores, they are usually clueless). Simply put: for shooting children you want the best autofocus possible and for shooting people in general you want a lens that creates shallow depth of field for more likeable photos.
What do you mean by cinema videos? Typically when you get into video focused cameras, the price goes up a bit. Idk what your budget is, but the Panasonic S5 mkII is a great choice right now as a video focused hybrid camera.
As a beginner/never used any camera before, then what should be the choice in terms of handling? r50 or RP? Interested in nature and wildlife photography.
I think I will hold onto the m50 for a little while longer and see what other cameras come out of the compact R range; I think the G series is about due for an upgrade
@@jardeshna I think the M50 Mk1 is becoming a little dated now; used, for 500 eur I don't think is a great bargain and your money may be better spent on another model, but then it depends what features you are personally seeking and what you want to use it for. The M mount is being discontinued and it seems like the future is with their R range looking forward. Saying that though I do still enjoy using the M50 for holidays, day to day use, and behind the scenes footage on shoots. Just be aware of the pros and cons before buying.
Great video! I have the M50 still and am super happy with the results I'm getting. Currently using the Sigma 16mm, Canon 50mm and will purchase the Sigma 30mm later today for a wedding this week. I can see why the R50 would be the better choice for people who don't have a camera yet since I almost paid the same amount for the M50 at the time, especially when you can use the R-lenses in the future when you upgrade to the R6 (which I am planning on doing). Using the M50 for RUclips and Instagram content is really more than enough with the prime lenses I'm using. As long as people keep asking which camera I'm using for my content I will keep using my M50 until I'm experiencing true limitations.
So I solely do photography with my Rebel T6. I do dable in video but mostly on my phone, but not the main point. The T6 is starting to show it's age now in 2023 and I wanted to upgrade to the M50 ii for photos but now with the R50 out I can't tell if I should upgrade to that instead. With someone who mainly does photography which do you all recommend I upgrade to?? thanks in advance!
Honestly you could totally save some cash and snag the M50. It still shoots RAW photos which is good, and the small lenses are nice. The only downside is that the camera/lenses won’t grow with you since Canon discontinued the M line. Hope this helps
I do know that. To be honest there really aren’t too many differences between the Mki and the Mkii. The Mkii was a disappointment when it released because it didn’t fix any of the main issues the original had. I don’t think using the original M50 affected my comparison. Thanks for bringing it up though.
@@connormccaskill Thanks for the reply. The whole M-community were disappointed when the M50ii was announced as we were all expecting a M5 MkII (basically an M6ii plus IBIS in an M5/M50 body with built-in EVF) but all we got was a software upgrade. However, in use (I use 1xM50 and 1xM50Mkii for wedding photography), their focusing performances are vastly different. The M50ii s an absolute joy to use and so accurate
Does the R50 mic input jack have true stereo input for stereo mics? The m50 was supposed to have this, but I guess it was a firmware issue and never got fixed, but it's clearly advertised as stereo on the specifcations, but only does Mono input.
@@gcvrsa True, they haven't supported the M line....However, the head of Canon said it was "not" discontinuing the EOS M line right now due to strong sales.
This is actually extremely helpful. I'm 13 and I'm trying to upgrade from my GoPro Hero 7 Silver to a "proper" camera. I was looking at camera such as the EOS Rebel T7, the Nikon Z30, and the EOS M50 Mark II but I never thought of the R50. This video definitely helped out with my choice so now I'm on my journey to making the $670 I'll need to buy the R50 with the kit lens 👍
It is very comparable to the ZVE10. Both are 4k. Both are compact. Both are the same price (give or take). I think it'll be down to personal preference. I do think that the Canon color, in the image is a bit more pleasing since they are both 8bit cameras.
Both are great. I think you should look at what system you'd like to grow into. Do you find that you like the higher end Sony cameras like the A74 or on the Canon side, the R6 Mk2. The Canon R50 is a bit newer than the Sony ZV-E10 so it does have a few spiffy features. Either way you can't go wrong
You know, I forgot to test rolling shutter. I just let my friend borrow the camera, but if I get a chance to test it, I will let you know here. However, if I had to guess, I imagine it probably performs better than the M50.
Replying so that I can find out as well, the M50 is the only camera I've ever owned where I notice the rolling shutter and I'd love to see that improved.
I am a real estate photographer trying to get into real estate videographer. I have a 80D and its too heavy which means the gimbal I buy is also going to expensive. Thinking of shifting to R50 and then get a smaller gimbal like Zhiyun Weebill S. Are Canon 80D and R50 comparable?
I’d say so, you’ll get a nice bump in tech (better AF and such), but you may not like the smaller ergonomics. Maybe try renting one to see if it works for you
@@connormccaskill Hey so I did check it out in person and I actually love the size of it. I had sort of stopped using my camera for travel because of 80D's bulkiness but I can see myself using more along with my professional work! Thanks for the info :)
Both are relatively different. If you are looking for the easiest camera to use, the Canon R50 is the way to go. The Fujifilm will be a bit more of a pain to use, but it has some fun personality and style. Either way, buy whichever one makes you happiest!
I want to buy my first camera, I had a dream since childhood to photograph, by the age of 40 I finally realized that it was time to do what I want to do! The choice fell on the M50
So, I've been wanting the Canon M50 Mark II for over a year. I've been saving religiously. My husband and I finally decided to purchase, but I got nervous and wanted to check reviews one last time. Low and behold, a new camera is on the scene! Now, I don't know whether to go for the now reduced-price M50 or the new contender... :O I'll be watching reviews all day as usual. Please provide advice in the comments.
Definitely don't feel like you need to get the latest and greatest. The M50II is still plenty of camera for a lot of people. Also if you already have lenses, it might be a good choice. That said, I personally like the R50 more
I was on the fence between the two as I haven’t had a slr style camera in years (last one I’ve used was a 600d,) I decided on the r50. I liked the extra auto mode features provided while I get used to photography again.
I’m thinking of selling my m50 Camera with 18-150 3.5-6.5 is stm (400 dollar lense ) And 22mm f2 stm (250 dollar lense ) With 2 canon batteries (120 dollar value) For 900, I only used it in dry weather and barely used it tbh. Never had an issue with it . I’m looking into going full frame Nikon . If you are interested let me know!
…I bought the M50 mark ii used. As much as I would have preferred the R50, I had cost to consider. I think the m50 will do for photos and the occasional 4k (emphasis on occasional) video. Or am I screwed on arrival with the M50 and I got something outdated and dumb? :(
Depends how you look at it. I own m50mkII and m6mkII and I intend to stay with them until they brake. I would say that any APSC camera made in the last 5 years is good enough to use for the next few years.
I have the M50 and it's still capable for what I need. I mostly take pictures and occasionally short videos. I believe this is the replacement for the M50 and sorry for the M series demise.
Hey there! I am looking for a camera that can shoot good photos with good 4k video that is better than an iPhone XR camera that is around 600 or less? Thanks!
@@connormccaskill one of the videos that got me to buy into m50 after my EOS M. Now I’m using a Fujifilm XH2S because I don’t need to focus on color grading and post editing of photos since using film simulations but I turned on my M50 and it was nostalgic and started using it again for candid photos.
The problem is that here in Spain the R50 retail price is around 900€, while you can get the M50 for 450€ in the used market, in really good conditions. So yeah, they R50 may be better, but still, double the price. That means if you look from a price standpoint the M50 is still a solid option to beginners.
as a new years res i want to be self taught hobby photography and I'm glad I waited cuz I knew the m50 was old because of the mk2 now to know that I can also record with it in 4k no crop. as a beginner im glad and as its something that I didnt take into consideration when I first looked. And knowing from building my pc there's always something new coming later so I kinda hoped that something would and im confident that the r50 will do what I want and more.
It does. Put it in movie mode and you'll see it in the menu. I use it with my Ninja and what I love about the R50 is that the input matches the camera settings. The touch screen on camera can also be used to change focus points while recording on the external monitor.
It's market segmentation. Most cheaper cameras are capable of much more, but if you want better functionality, you have to pay for a higher end model 🤷♂️ (Just look at the cheapest Sony ZV camera that doesn't even have RAW photo image format.)
Hi I am a beauty blogger and I want to upgrade my quality (I film with iPhone) I was still thinking about purchasing the M50 but now I am convinced to get the R50 instead do you have any lense to recommend to upgrade my “reel, TikTok” videos ?
Hey there! Really depends on your budget honestly. I think if you got the Canon RF to EF adapter and also got the Sigma 18-35mm f2.8 lens that would be a great combo. The only thing is, it is a bit expensive. You could also just get the Canon RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 and that would cover you with just one lens for much cheaper. Here are links: Adapter (on sale right now): amzn.to/3MpKkVy Sigma Lens (on sale right now): amzn.to/40Rkn5B Canon Lens: amzn.to/43jj6Gq
to me upgrade is not worth it, affordable lenses on M mount are amazing compared to R which are super expensive but price you pay for it won't make your photo better 3 or 4 time more... so M50 wins big time ... for people who have money or those who are hunting pixels maybe R50 but who knows.. maybe cannon will do another trick telling you the R is the future like they did with M but discontinued it all to introduce something new so they can cash up again so yea not worth the risk
Im happy to see that they made a real Canon M50 Mark II. What I mean by that is they actaully added practical features that people have been wanting for a while now. But the same time I'm sad because they completely abandoned the entire M line up. The m line had one specific type of lens that other companies should make and that was its 32mm f1.4. I'm planning releasing a video soon on why the m50 would still be a good buy then following it up with that specific lens and why more camera manufactures to make lenses similar to that

Now looking at your M50 & R50 comparison, I noticed something that surprised me. The a6400 gave a video look that I associated with Canon, while the ZVE10 looked more traditional Sony. Now, looking at your M50 & R50 comparison (right after watching the Sony comparison), I noted that both outputted video more traditionally Sony-ish (darker shadows, more contrasty) Huh? Ok, now I'm surprised. No amount of new and better tech on those new RF-S mount cameras makes up for the complete absence of a single lens that is remotely attractive, compelling or simply bright/fast. A turd system is still a turd system. No lenses = 💩

I love your edit, its really fun to watch 🥰
Thank you! I appreciate that!
Hii I'm new to cameras and I was wondering why you shouldn't use the HDR PQ? I recently got the R50 and have been seeing some videos about shooting HDR PQ but no one mentions the why not, if someone could please explain to me the reason please✨
I started on the m50 mark ii and my s5iix just came today!!
That’s so awesome 👏 great upgrade
Another video I did NOT get a notification for! Weird. Great video btw! This a HELL of a camera for the price!
Thank you sooooo much for this video!!!
You are so welcome!
Hey Conor, any recommendation on a beginner camera for cinema videos? Im looking to purchase my first camera but don't know where to start!
What do you mean by cinema videos? Typically when you get into video focused cameras, the price goes up a bit. Idk what your budget is, but the Panasonic S5 mkII is a great choice right now as a video focused hybrid camera.
@@connormccaskill I meant by taking cinematic videos and possible short films. Color grading is huge for me. Budget is 1,500 more or less.
As a beginner/never used any camera before, then what should be the choice in terms of handling? r50 or RP? Interested in nature and wildlife photography.
I think I will hold onto the m50 for a little while longer and see what other cameras come out of the compact R range; I think the G series is about due for an upgrade
I am looking at a used M50 Mk1 15-45 for 500eur, do you recommend any newer cameras under the same range or is the M50 a good choice?
Thanks.
The canon m50 can also become a webcam. Just plug it in via micro usb and the canon eos utility software
That’s awesome 👏 yeah lenses really do help make the camera great! Thanks for sharing
@@connormccaskill yes, totally helps! Thanks!
@@ChavaM88which one did u end up getting
You DO know there is a M50 Mkii - you should have reviewed that instead as there are a number of improvements over the original M50
Awesome job, Connor and David!
Appreciate it man 🙌🏻
Does the R50 mic input jack have true stereo input for stereo mics? The m50 was supposed to have this, but I guess it was a firmware issue and never got fixed, but it's clearly advertised as stereo on the specifcations, but only does Mono input.
Does the R50 have a full X hotshoe??
Newsflash! Canon executives have stated recently that they are "not" discontinuing the EOS M line right now.
Oh that's good to know! Thanks for the information
There hasn't been a new EF-M lens in 5 years.
@@gcvrsa True, they haven't supported the M line....However, the head of Canon said it was "not" discontinuing the EOS M line right now due to strong sales.
Nice breakdown! Love how you put this together :)
Glad you liked it!
Great video you two!
Thank you 🙏🏻
I've seen the R50 in person and i gotta say, it's a nice little mirrorless camera
Hey man, I'm really glad you found this video helpful! Good luck to you on your camera journey!
@@connormccaskill Thanks :)
Watching this thinking "wayment, I know where they are!" 🙊 Great review and concise!
Haha it makes for a great film location! Glad you enjoyed the video
Newbie here: how do this compare to the Sony ZV?
It is very comparable to the ZVE10. Both are 4k. Both are compact. Both are the same price (give or take). I think it'll be down to personal preference. I do think that the Canon color, in the image is a bit more pleasing since they are both 8bit cameras.
@@connormccaskill thx mate
@@Driftuner For sure
Looking into the r50 or sony zv e-10 idk which on to get.
The dream team is back together! Let get this video more viral than the last M50 video
Haha that would be amazing
Thinking of buying this for my wife... Does the R50 have the same rolling shutter problems with 4k?
You know, I forgot to test rolling shutter. I just let my friend borrow the camera, but if I get a chance to test it, I will let you know here. However, if I had to guess, I imagine it probably performs better than the M50.
@@connormccaskill Thank you very much! I would think/hope it's better, but I'm very cautiously optimistic. 🙃
@@jdavidwebb Here's hoping 🤞🏼
Replying so that I can find out as well, the M50 is the only camera I've ever owned where I notice the rolling shutter and I'd love to see that improved.
Which one is should I buy Sony A6400 or Canon R50
Well, I guess which system do you want to grow into? Do you like the Sony system and cameras or Canon? Both are good options at the end of the day

Right on! Glad you are able to use it for your travel content!
Idk If I should get the Canon R50 or Fujifilm XS10. Seems like the AI is much better in the R50 considering it's a recent release. Any thoughts?
Both are relatively different. If you are looking for the easiest camera to use, the Canon R50 is the way to go. The Fujifilm will be a bit more of a pain to use, but it has some fun personality and style. Either way, buy whichever one makes you happiest!
Fuji will release the XS-20 at the end of May. I would go with Fuji as it has IBIS and a lot more lenses available

I’m thinking of selling my
m50 Camera
with 18-150 3.5-6.5 is stm (400 dollar lense )
And 22mm f2 stm (250 dollar lense )
With 2 canon batteries (120 dollar value)
For 900,
I only used it in dry weather and barely used it tbh.
Do you think R50 is a good upgrade from Ti2? Or should I get the full frame?
It is a good upgrade, but go full-frame if you can afford it!
what is rolliing shuter of r50?

Hey there! I am looking for a camera that can shoot good photos with good 4k video that is better than an iPhone XR camera that is around 600 or less? Thanks!
The same place in TN that m50 video is nostalgic hehe.
Haha definitely intentional! Glad you’ve stuck around!

Both cameras can be used for live streaming as webcams
The problem is that here in Spain the R50 retail price is around 900€, while you can get the M50 for 450€ in the used market, in really good conditions.
So yeah, they R50 may be better, but still, double the price. That means if you look from a price standpoint the M50 is still a solid option to beginners.

And knowing from building my pc there's always something new coming later so I kinda hoped that something would and im confident that the r50 will do what I want and more.
does anyone know if you can buy a bigger grip for r50
Bro am bit confused, nikon z50 or canon r 50 which bone is better🥹
I’d choose the Canon R50 personally. The Z50 is cool though, I used it for a bit
I think we must compare apples with apples, apart from very distinguishing features, the price range is very important, otherwise whats the point.
Hi, do you know if the canon R50 has a clean hdmi output? if yes, how do I find it
It does. Put it in movie mode and you'll see it in the menu. I use it with my Ninja and what I love about the R50 is that the input matches the camera settings. The touch screen on camera can also be used to change focus points while recording on the external monitor.

Not at all, it may be less “professional” but the tech is better
what about photos ?, i have a camera to take pictures is the r50 much better at taking pictures , I'm not interested in video.
What are the big differences between R50 and the R10
Asking as a beginner looking to get into photos and video
The big difference is a mechanical shutter and the ability to record 4k 60fps footage. It's just a slightly more powerful camera
Also faster photo shooting and larger buffer.
The R50 would perfectly meet my needs if only they'd thrown in CLog 1.
That would have been awesome! Who knows, maybe it will get it in an update
It's market segmentation. Most cheaper cameras are capable of much more, but if you want better functionality, you have to pay for a higher end model 🤷♂️ (Just look at the cheapest Sony ZV camera that doesn't even have RAW photo image format.)
M6 mark ii can be a better option for an upgrade guys
Here are links:
Adapter (on sale right now): amzn.to/3MpKkVy
Sigma Lens (on sale right now): amzn.to/40Rkn5B
Canon Lens: amzn.to/43jj6Gq
to me upgrade is not worth it, affordable lenses on M mount are amazing compared to R which are super expensive but price you pay for it won't make your photo better 3 or 4 time more... so M50 wins big time ... for people who have money or those who are hunting pixels maybe R50 but who knows.. maybe cannon will do another trick telling you the R is the future like they did with M but discontinued it all to introduce something new so they can cash up again so yea not worth the risk
Fair perspective. The M50 is still great for sure. The R lenses are great for whenever you want to upgrade
Thank you

Im happy to see that they made a real Canon M50 Mark II. What I mean by that is they actaully added practical features that people have been wanting for a while now. But the same time I'm sad because they completely abandoned the entire M line up. The m line had one specific type of lens that other companies should make and that was its 32mm f1.4. I'm planning releasing a video soon on why the m50 would still be a good buy then following it up with that specific lens and why more camera manufactures to make lenses similar to that

"Long ago" I bought the Sony a6400, and although I have seen comparisons between the newer a6400 and ZVE10, I noted the differences but that was about it. I don't know what comes out of the HDMI port of the a6400 -- maybe you can record 10-bit, but I have never tried, but how does the a6400 internal video look more Canon than a Canon? No amount of new and better tech on those new RF-S mount cameras makes up for the complete absence of a single lens that is remotely attractive, compelling or simply bright/fast. A turd system is still a turd system. No lenses = 💩
