    Great video - I'm part of the C100 M2 cult and I still shoot with it - small, gradable files, insane battery life, decent autofocus, dual card slots, decent EVF, built in XLR audio, NDs!!! If they had made the C100 M3 4.2.2 10 bit 4K they would have sold a million of them. You nailed it on the exposure comment - the C100 codec is unforgiving on underexposure - especially in the shadows. I agree shoot native 850 ISO whenever possible, but I feel it's decent up to 10,000 ISO, Also I personally prefer to shoot wideDR because I honestly feel this early CLOG sucks - Canon has come a long way since. Thanks for the grading tips! The camera is still great for long events, presentations, concerts etc. Hard not to love this ancient, reliable workhorse.

At the same time Ridley Scott had just shot "Prometheus" in 8K RED Raw and i 4K was really actually becoming the norm in the semo-pro and higher segment of cameras. I loved what i saw that came from this camera in terms of picture quality. It was not vulgar over-sharp but aliasingfree and really beautiful. And the Formfactor was also just right down my alley. I had a C100 mark1 when they first came out and it was revolutionary compared to the Sony EX3 I was using - when I needed 4K for a project I bought a Sony F7 but hated using it compared to the C100 (better quality but felt like a backward setep) - so bought a C200 as soon as it was released - I'm still getting lovely pictures from it now and although I have a couple of 6K BMPC, URSAs and a LUMIX S5II - it's still my 'go to' run and gun camera - modular but solid as they come, long battery, built in ND, beautiful picture even though it's 8bit apart from the RAW (which seems to make no real difference), great in low light and useable built in viewfinder. Out of all my cameras, when I fly and need something totally reliable, it's the camera I take.
    I think that the new pricing makes it a bargain.

    It's a wonderful camera. The mark 2 has the *much* better EVF (which is amazing in bright sun), the AF as standard (it was an add-on for the C100), and the screen is a full flip-out. It's also hardly any more expensive. On that screen, it's OLED. If it had 10-bit 4K, I'd never replace it. I love this thing. Next to the very latest 4K 10bit cameras coming out, its image holds up but is definitely outshined. Personally, I think 4K is a massively over-hyped advent, but when you combine its resolution with 10-bit, you get such smooth gradients that it really does take the image up a level.

I need to learn more about it while using it in certain situations. My question to other filmmakers out there is where to you learn more about cameras best? Is it books or RUclips? please send me suggestions

      It's mostly just intuition through practice. Cameras are a medium. It's the artist behind the medium that's more worthy of study. Because any manual behind a camera, is all that's technically needed. And there are also art fundamentals/theory.
      I use cameras for observation, because sometimes I need reference for drawings or animation. So I am not primarily a photographer.
      From my experience, it's a lot of fun looking at techniques from different fields of art. And then reapplying it to my own work.
      For example, Akira Kurosawa is an amazing director. That made a lot of famous films, with a lot of great composition and movement. And Power Rangers is really good for studying things like choreography.
      Even knowing obscure things like animal behavior, can also help when planning a photo or video.

    I'm still using Mark II after almost 10 years with my C70 as a main camera. It's incredibly easy to match them, which is almost impossible with any mirrorless, the image is too digital on all mirrorless cameras, no mater how good or expensive they are.

    I still have my C100 Mkii's and love them. They're not used as much but the second a job calls for them I get so giddy and happy because just how easy they ere to work with. My only issue was the lack of lenses that fully worked with them. I mean I hate how a $250 kit lens (EFS STM) with no weather protection and made of cheap plastic has full face detection and tracking but none of my L line does. After fact checking this I did notice one EF lens was available for this but not the one I originally thought which is the L series 24-105 f4 but rather the cheap EF 24-205 f3.5-5.6 so my complaint is still valid. Other then that I will defend it's 420 8bit footage any day :) love it. I just wished the C200 had 10bit 422 internal :(

    This was my first camera in 2015 or 2016! I loved it! I made it a workhorse, I beat it up and it survived. I loved everything I shot on it, but in the end, found that despite the image quality that still held up, I was needing something that offered 4K and 6K and higher frame rates. I moved onto the BMPCC 6K (og) in 2020 and have two of those now. I just wish Black Magic Design could figure out the battery life and nice top handle like the Canon C100. I know they offer the battery grip for the 6K pros now and they added ND filters, so I might end up with one of those.

    Flawless video, I really enjoyed it! Thank you, I'm checking out the MKii and OG on eBay now. Been too obsessed with pointless features and consumerism in the last few years. I've started going down the path of realizing that the person matters more than the camera for over 10 years. Watched a video where Camera Conspiracies compares the OG BMPCC 2mp pocket cine cam vs the Sony A7S MkIII as well as you did. I was shocked! Been in the "M43, S35, FF" sensor and autofocus war too much, it doesn't matter that much if your putting in the TLC needed to make good ART!

      Love this! I originally bought a C100 back in 2018, but after revisiting I was shocked to see how well it holds up. Definitely not as robust as the A7siii I'm used to. I'm keeping my C100 mk2 with the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 and Sigma 50-100mm f1.8 forever!! I use it for corporate videos-mostly interviews. I got recently a Sony FX30 and it sure is crisp in 4k but I have used them both for interviews and when the final deliverable is 1080p (almost every time with my client) I use the FX30's 4k footage and reframe it as needed. I wanted to buy the C300mk2 for its 4k but not sure anymore...for live events -conferences and even some wedding ceremonies I use a Canon XF300 cammcorder. Not sure a cinema camera will work well. I shoot mostly by myself. Anyway, great camera C100! is the C200 a big upgrade? Whatever I buy now has to have 4k.

    What's the advantage of Cinematch over Colour Space Transform to match Arri's colour space? Is it just less nodes?
    Also, wouldn't pushing 8 bit footage to a flatter profile than intended and converting to Rec 709 introduce images artifacts? I used a C100 for my first documentary and I don't remember it having this much lattitude.

    • @NatesFilmTutorials
      @NatesFilmTutorials  11 месяцев назад +1

      Great question! Color space transform tool essential converts it to the same color space. Where Cinematch differs is that they test and compare the different sensors. You can see the difference around 5:13 where I select color space transform and sensor match.
      You still have to nail your exposure or overexpose and bring back down, otherwise you will get artifacts.
      If you are careful with how you shoot and color grade you can get some great looks out of it!

    I have used the C100 for many projects including broadcast TV commercials. It is a true cinema camera, not a hybrid. People want 4K or DCI, but you can achieve amazing results in 1080p using a high-quality, fast lens and shooting log. I personally like the Zeiss Milvus lenses with apertures at T1.4, but you get the idea. And let us remember that broadcast TV is still not 4K.

      Hi -- I love the image quality of the C100. Can you get this same look from the C100 Mk2? There are those who say that the Mk2's image quality is a bit more video-like compared to the more 'filmic' look of the Mk1.

    • @JohnLRice
      @JohnLRice Месяц назад +1

      @@whistlingdavetaviner3663 I would tend to agree a bit? I never did an extensive comparison analysis between the two and unfortunately I did end up selling my Mk1 last year and I sometimes regret it because it was a wonderful camera and I sold it at a huge loss. 😢 While I think it may have has a somewhat softer/more filmic look which seemed to looks especially good for people, I'm pretty sure I could process Mk2 video in post to achieve a similar if not identical look, plus I don't record people very often? I'm somewhat in the camp of "initially recording everything at the highest quality possible" and then processing in post for the desired look.

      @@JohnLRice Thanks John. When I saw the side-by-side comparisons that some people have put up on RUclips, the facial skin tones on the Mk1 did seem preferably warmer to me in that sort of orange/red dimension, and, more generally, I could understand what people meant when they described the Mk1 as being more filmic. I have a used Mk2 coming today, so I'm looking forward to trying it out.

      @JohnLRice Месяц назад +1

      @@whistlingdavetaviner3663 I think you will love the Mk2! I have two of them, and the physical improvements are well worth the added cost, IMHO. (much better articulating view screen, much better EVF, built in mono mic, etc.) If I'm recalling correctly, I think the Mk2 is better at low light situations also, which maybe lead to a more film like look on the Mk1 because it was a little "grainier"?
