Everyone complained about it when it came out. I got it super discounted with 2 lens, under half retail! I think its one of the best cameras I've ever had the f2 lens is amazing. I have since given it to my son who uses it regularly. I told him never sell it, I'll buy it back. so small, super easy to use, genuinely pocketable and beautiful looking. The lesson to learn here is, reviewers go through so many cameras they have to find faults, this ones main criticism was slow focus for a compact and as a result could not compete with the established compacts of the day, most if not all had smaller censors and its release price was very high in comparison, so understandable the reviewers weren't very nice about it.
I got this camera when it first came out not knowing what powers it had hidden within. I simply bought it because it was cheap and small. I still remember when Magic Lantern first came out and we could only shoot about a minute of 720p RAW at a time. It just keeps getting better with age
just stumbled upon your channel after a few years and realised youre the one who taught me how to use white balance and lighting to get good images in my cheap camera! cheers

This video was a big throwback for me. I had the EOS M and a Mazda Protege5 back in 2014. Reminiscing on setting up ML for the first time and immediately rigging the camera up in my P5 to shoot on a spirited drive was a throwback I didn’t know I needed. I have long been parted with my P5 and the EOS M I sold back in 2021 but I miss those days, that quirky camera, and that special little hatchback. 🥲
The EOS M has earned a good amount of praise in the last years, but something about the color grading seems off to me. When you reach a certain sharpness, it seems that the camera creates a lot of aberrations (the branches at 4:25 for example), wich would be really unpleasant for any job that's either short, commercial or anything appart from a little experiment... Sorry but I'm not on board for this one. The EOS M is a good way to begin at videography, but nothing more (sadly)...
Honestly that was the one thing that annoyed me, I know some people use mist or digital FX filters to combat that but all the fixes in MLV app just soften the image too much so I just learned to live with it
It's moire and aliasing that come with 1080p 3x3 mode. If you choose crop mode 1x3, the amount of moire and aliasing will reduce drastically. The crop is not that much, at the highest res you actually have full width sensor at 2.35:1 aspect ratio. But with the 1x3 mode you will have another huge problem: the dreadful rolling shutter. I prefer rolling shutter than moire/aliasing tho.
its not perfect but definitely miles better than it was back in the day. I'd recommend watching @Zeek's videos and videos from @IMCE to get up to date on it!

Great looking video. Well done! Also, a good review of the revitalized EOS M. I've toyed with the idea of getting one. Merry Christmas to you and your wife!
My first ever real street photography camera. I’ve had about 5 or 6 of these over the years. I absolutely love it. Zeek played a massive part in why I kept buying them 😂 great video again Nigel 🙌🏼
I'm start my journey of street photography with this little M too. It taught me a lot by having to do everything manually, maxing out the potential of this slow and very basic function camera to make a good output. If you can use this slow heck AF to take a great photo and play with ML, you can use literally any camera to do anything in the world.
@@DavidCowie2022 Prices have gone up significantly since people have made videos about the capabilities. So whenever someone sees one for cheap they just buy it. The files for magic lantern reside on the memory card so it's pretty hard to break it.
Nice vid! I've had the canon t4i for several years now as my beginner in photography and videography. But in the past year or so magic lantern has massively opened up the value of it for me. Especially when I discovered crop mood like a month ago. Before crop mood I kind of didn't like using because of the workload for getting less than 1080p with baked in crop. But with crop mood, I can do so much more with it (my camera can handle 4.8k RAW at 12 bit color with specific crops/aspect ratios). Although the sensor is still an old aps-c dslr and so it isn't as good as the EOS M. Low light sucks on it. I can't trust it at or above 800 ISO because of all the denoise work I'll have to do in post on the MLV app later. I also have a Sony a6400 which picks up the slack for in lowlight tho. But now with crop mood, I hope to shoot more with the t4i to get better with colorgrading and doing some small narrative short films on it.
heres a little bit of advice for lowlight shooting on eos m for high isos(usable 3200iso). for one, use fast lenses and primes(obviously, the autofocus sucks), but more importantly, shoot higher res for low light(cleans up better with noise reduction than 1080p mode). in the mlv app, change the color space from rec 709 to arri wide gamut(you dont hsve to put it in arri log, but be sure its using arri wide gamut), next put vibrancy at 36, and use chroma denoise. DO NOT TOUCH THE LUMINANCE DENOISE, IT IS AWFUL. using chroma denoise will turn your color grain into what looks like film grain and it looks surprisingly good, only a very slight reduction is the red parts of your image. the most important part is to make sure you are using arri wide gamut, because using red 709 will smear your image while its a lot sharper and clearer to use arri wide
I really want to get into a full frame camera, likely the R8. But I'm holding onto my Canon M50 hoping that someone figures out how to put Magic Latern onto it.
Lovely little video 😊 Just one question; what if I just want to shoot video not in RAW? I don't have the time or inclination to do color grading etc etc. Is this camera still worth getting? Thanks 😊
Loved my eos m and magic lantern when I was first starting out, such a great little camera shout out Ed and feral cat! Wasn’t expecting to see some local spots on this review hahaha
Yep, I demand to be able to quickly shooting my clips and putting them right into my video editor. The world runs on 1080p. Not 4K I don't need all the extra headaches, steps, and wasted space and time associated with RAW video files, or futzing around in a firmware where most of the functions are broken or unsupported on that hardware. Magic Latern was made originally I think for the D50... and ported to the EOS M. There's a video of a black guy with two EOS M's... eviscerating the EOS M running Magic Latern. The wildcard camera I do want now... is an Infrared Camera...
Bought 2 eosm, black body 150$, red 180$ (video shot on a "red" camera). Well, its a useful camera that's out of production. That price follows an inverted bell curve as it gets older, EOL and then rare and sought after.
I got one for 165 with kit lens so 200 isn’t really a click bait A lot of people buy used eos m to shoot ml but just changes their mind and sell it again.
Thanks Nigel, great video as always ❤ Could you please share your thoughts about GH5 and GH5S? I mean if you could pick up just one if them, what will you do?🙌

Never heard of this camera before. I'm diving into vlog and am looking for something affordable, I'd love to hear more about what lens to pair with it and what editing software is good/ I mean I guess capcut is good.
Was this all shot with the kit kens also? Ive had my EOS-M a few years now but never really tried to get into it. Now im more interested in film making I'll have lots of homework to do 😁. Would love to rig mine out similar. Shame a lot if the parts are unavailable in the UK.
Lovely man... such great quality and evocative imagery. You really bring out the best in this camera. If you don't mind me asking, what geographical location is that? Really makes me want to visit :)
What's with the artefacts all over the footage though? I don't think there was a single shot in this video that didn't have some sort of colour noise, especially in the detailed background areas.
A common frustration of owning a magic lantern camera. The performance varies from camera model to model. It requires a lot of patience to shoot one of these. I had my fun and finally sold mine this year.
Some of it could be ISO noise or just youtube compression, but for the most part I'm not seeing it as bad as what you're seeing and I've watched this video on several different screens.
Could you do a break down on how the rig is set in the thumbnail? I'm following the affiliate link but could not figure out how the parts are connected
I have an EOS-M, never really used it. I have 5D, a 6D and a 70D. But I am a portrait photograhper. I had ML installed on a 7D (I do miss that camera). But now I bougth a microphone and a couple of small LED ligths. I think I will try ML out on the M. :)

Great looking video. Well done! Also, a good review of the revitalized EOS M. I've toyed with the idea of getting one. Merry Christmas to you and your wife!
What a beautiful short film man this was a great production!!
And I still love my EOS M100 but missed the boat on the EOS M
You took time to make this. Thanks.
so good Nigel!
Great vid, Nigel. Love the EOS M! And the facebook community is outstanding. The best you'll find :)
you can reduce some moire in da vinci just set spatial threshold - chroma: 14 , in motion effect tab )
My first ever real street photography camera. I’ve had about 5 or 6 of these over the years. I absolutely love it. Zeek played a massive part in why I kept buying them 😂 great video again Nigel 🙌🏼
Zeek is the GOAT and inspired so many to continue pushing EOS M.
@@getfmlr facts!
I'm start my journey of street photography with this little M too. It taught me a lot by having to do everything manually, maxing out the potential of this slow and very basic function camera to make a good output. If you can use this slow heck AF to take a great photo and play with ML, you can use literally any camera to do anything in the world.
You've had five or six? Do they keep on breaking?
@@DavidCowie2022 Prices have gone up significantly since people have made videos about the capabilities. So whenever someone sees one for cheap they just buy it. The files for magic lantern reside on the memory card so it's pretty hard to break it.
Sheer visual poetry and an artistic based explanation,. Superb.
@@itsapinecone7280 Thanks! I do have some fast lenses (f1.4 and f2.8s) but that those tips on the chroma denoi9se and vibrancy is super helpful!
I really want to get into a full frame camera, likely the R8. But I'm holding onto my Canon M50 hoping that someone figures out how to put Magic Latern onto it.
you made me buy this camera back in 2018, my first camera
I learned so much from Zeek and I’ve never even used magic lantern, and my m3 can’t use it. He’s just so talented. I miss his stuff.
They need to make an EF to EF M adaptor with variable ND filter insert.
Wait ,... did I just watch an upscaled 1080p footage ?
Lovely little video 😊
Just one question; what if I just want to shoot video not in RAW? I don't have the time or inclination to do color grading etc etc.
Is this camera still worth getting? Thanks 😊
This camera is not for you if you are wanting a quick easy image straight out of camera, it is in fact the opposite
With the latest update to the Magic Lantern code this little camera has become a RAW beast packing cinematic qualities into its tiny form factor.
Not 4K
I don't need all the extra headaches, steps, and wasted space and time associated with RAW video files, or futzing around in a firmware where most of the functions are broken or unsupported on that hardware. Magic Latern was made originally I think for the D50... and ported to the EOS M. There's a video of a black guy with two EOS M's... eviscerating the EOS M running Magic Latern.
The wildcard camera I do want now... is an Infrared Camera...
These are not $200. Every video like this always gives some extremely rare price point as if it's the standard.
There are several on eBay in the $230 range, including one with a lens. That is pretty close.
@@edipisreks5535 $230 isnt $200
Bought 2 eosm, black body 150$, red 180$ (video shot on a "red" camera).
Well, its a useful camera that's out of production. That price follows an inverted bell curve as it gets older, EOL and then rare and sought after.
I got one for 165 with kit lens so 200 isn’t really a click bait
A lot of people buy used eos m to shoot ml but just changes their mind and sell it again.
It's pretty much is. Relax p Diddy. You don't need it for your after party
Thanks Nigel, great video as always ❤ Could you please share your thoughts about GH5 and GH5S? I mean if you could pick up just one if them, what will you do?🙌
That may be a video for the future for sure, the GH just gets cheaper as time passes and its still so incredible!
Can I get similar results on my Canon 80D if I use Magic Lantern? Or does the mirrorless spec make a difference?
"I think can actually make you work for better images and almost prompt you to create better stuff" - Which IMHO is actually something the world needs!
PNW is very photogenic 😁👍 Great shots. Thanks for spreading the word about this camera 📸✨
Where's this place with the smoke coming out of the buildings? This place is gorgeous. Thank you for the video!
Quality video as always dude
I love this camera 😊 I'm still using it as my main camera on my channel, I paired it with m42 mount lenses 😊
Wow nicely done Nigel I am very fan of Cannon Cameras
1080p will cause this issue on the M. Shoot with more pixels!
Could you do a break down on how the rig is set in the thumbnail? I'm following the affiliate link but could not figure out how the parts are connected
700D user here.... Great video.
Hey pal, can u show how u are doing processing your footage.. great vid
I have an EOS-M, never really used it. I have 5D, a 6D and a 70D. But I am a portrait photograhper. I had ML installed on a 7D (I do miss that camera). But now I bougth a microphone and a couple of small LED ligths. I think I will try ML out on the M. :)
Great video! This proves that you don't need the latest of the latest camera/lens to create something nice.
Very much like the colors on your video. Can you explain the process, some specific points?
Which lenses are you using? Tell me price of it also
I have the M6 Mark II. IMHO one of the most underrated cameras.
Great video, almost made me go buy one. thanx
Hmmm....interesting!
Thanks for pointing this camera out. You certainly woke something up in me.
What’s the best quality setting with this camera in crop mood for unlimited recording ?
Lovely! I thought you were going to the Blackmagic Cinema Camera though, that was a groundbreaking camera for its time. Love the EOS M, more for stills than anything else, paired with the EF-M primes
I noticed a lot of banding and artifacts with trees and some of the water shots, is that present in your raw edit?
Love the cinematography man ❤
