@@ireinbv5309 you must be talking about Canon with the RF mount. Nikon has had the same mount since the 1950’s and Sony E-mount works for everything Sony. Not to mention the fact that if I love a piece of glass that much, I’ll get an adapter so that I can still use my old glass on your new mount. However, what I can’t get around is old technology that obsolete (poor ISO, Poor Autofocus, 8 bit color). As a full time professional in this business, it’s all about making profit. This was my first camera in 2016. At that point it was $2500. I’m now shooting on reds and arris but miss the good old days of just fooling around and learning how to even use a camera, and awing at the images.
From my shooting experience with various classes of hand-holdable video cameras I can confidently say the Canon C100 especially the Mk2 version records the best 24-28 Megabit 8-bit 4:2:0 1080p image among virtually everything out there in the market even today. Yes, you got to nail the settings exactly right due to the heavy compressed nature of the H.264 files but the rewards are so impressive. Hassle free workflow, storage space is minimal, editing is a breeze by even the cheapest of computers. IQ-wise, beautiful color rendition, great tonal gradation from the shadow to highlight areas, great resolution (close to the theoretical 1080 lines of vertical resolution with professional grade cine or still photo lenses), good light sensitivity and even the grain at the higher ISOs looks pretty beautiful. Great camera for today's money of $500 no doubt.
Mk2 has a solid EVF, and while the DP Autofocus isn't as sophisticated as today, it is still plenty reliable for worry-free run-and-gun, letting you keep your attention on exposure and lighting.
Great vid. Just for further ease you don't have to deep dive into the card for Davinci imports you can literally just click and drag the very first original folder into Davinci and it will automatically find the video files for you.
The simplicity, yet feature packed design of this camera is beautiful and it angers me. So many features in this camera that are becoming deprived in modern day camera releases. Not sure why we're removing things, like full size XLR and ND, but it's killing me.

man, i think the crunchy constrast on the blacks happens because you put rec709 on gamma output, but for majority of monitors today we use 2.4 gamma, that is kind of a bit flat contrast gamma, but is okay and the media standard nowadays
Hi thank you for the great video Does this mean that today a comparable video quality can be had from a 500 USD new camera ? i am impressed This was very good indeed

Just watch that ND filter knob. I have an entire shoot with it having not quite seated out and once I got to post noticed there’s a shadow in my top left
Thanks for the video! trying to make a decision at the moment. How does the C100 match up against the C100 II, C200, or C300? I’m having trouble pinpointing which models are newer and what features differ.
What a timely question, next week’s review is on the GH5 actually! I know this is a really annoying answer but it depends on what you are going to use it for. If you’re shooting documentary and need the simplest setup possible then the C100 is hard to beat. If you want stronger resolution and codec selection and portability, it’s the GH5. If I had to start fresh right now I would probably do a C100, but that’s super specific to the kind of work I do (RUclips, doc, etc)
@@jakehayden998 haha that's awesome! Love your camera reviews so I will be watching. Also, that's an interesting take. Currently own a gh5 that doesn't get much love cuz been using my x-s20 a lot more but been hanging on to it for possible podcast/production scenarios.
Another thing you forgot to mention is the autofocus. For a camera with every other aspect being the opposite of anxiety inducing, I found that the focus is what you have to watch out for the most. It takes two to three seconds to lock an and doesn't have any type of tracking.
How does the C100 and C200 8bit footage compare? Would love to see those side by side and cut together. And any other thoughts you would have. You make great RUclips content look forward to more of it.
I always wanted to get one and will probably get it at the right price. At the moment I’m playing with a Blackmagic camera that was released about a year after c100: the Production 4K. I find it to be almost exact opposite of this camera. The body is a bit awkward and minimalist in features but the codecs could not be more robust. Any flavour of ProRes in 4K or 1080p or CinemaDNG RAW in 4000x2160. It has some quirks like the “black hole sun” and a useless built in battery but the image over all is to my eye stunning. I wonder what you would make of it.
I used the C100 for a short film a few months, and the image quality is just not there for me. Just to name a few gripes I had with it: 1- The evf is subpar. 2- The lcd screen is hard to see in broad daylight. 3- The files are not flexible and break apart if you want to do anything more than just a simple grade. 4- The image is soft. Too soft, in fact. Sharpening the footage ends up looking crunchy if you don’t get it right. I’d pick up a GH5 for around the same price and have a more flexible camera that will look goof for years to come. The C100 had its place, but it’s long been superseded by better, more practical cameras.
@@jakehayden998 I used a Rokinon/Samyang set of f/1.4s, the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 and the Canon 24-105mm f/4 MKII. I know the Rokinons aren’t the sharpest of the bunch, but I was shooting stopped down (mainly for focus accuracy) and it still was quite soft. The only lens that I enjoyed was the 24-105mm because it had IS and it worked pretty well for some of the handheld shots we did.
Good summary of the C100 M1 but definitely buy the M2! If Canon had kept this body with 4k 422 10bit internal they would have sold a million of them. I'm still part of the C100 M2 cult, though recently upgraded to C70 - I still love this camera as a safety cam and for time lapse - it's just so reliable, with tiny gradable files, great cine features, great battery life it's hard not to like this proven workhorse.
Its a solid camera, but the highlight handling of the sensor is atrocious. And at the same time, literally every mirrorless camera now has better image quality. I had the mk2 for a while, and I loved it.
Worth remembering that if you added a Atomos Ninja 2 you could get a 4:2:2 image essentially turning the C100 Into a C300 for way less money. Glory days.
you're still only getting an 8 bit 4:2:0 file...just wrapped in a 10 bit wrapper...the C100 and C100mkii only output 8 bit 4:2:0 data via HDMI...I have 3 Canon C100mkiis and use a Ninja Blade with one when shooting
This Canon camera seems to be 1080 HD looking at the specs? Is it still good enough for video clip production and upload on youtube? I've got a Sony HVR Z1E camera, and wondering if this camera Canon C100 mark 1 is worth the upgrade?
Yes, it has a 4k sensor which is down-sampled to HD. This is what gives it a great HD image. If you are going to buy get the mark 2 which has MP4 as well as HD and also 50/60 fps. I use mine and shoot in C-log. It has never disappointed. Have a look on YT at footage samples, though do look at more than one as some users don't seem to know how to set the camera up properly. Here's a video of mine, shot at 50fps C-log and edited, graded and upscaled to UHD in DaVinci Resolve. ruclips.net/video/1o7G4ffDkng/видео.html
@@UKHeritageRailways Your footage looks amazing! The quality is astonishing. Wow. In your opinion Sony HVR Z1U is comparable to your camera you took this footage? @@dmitrivincent1433 At 19 years old the Sony is showing its age. The picture quality is not as sharp as the C100 mk2. The design of the C100 mk2 is nearly 10 years younger than the Sony and only went out of production a couple of years ago. Some of the advantages of the Canon are a 4k Super 35 sensor which is downsampled to HD giving a great picture, recording to SD cards rather than tape in progressive rather than interlaced video, and interchangeable lenses. If you are happy using the Sony you could try upscaling the footage to UHD in your edit software.
Are you still looking to purchase a Canon C 100 mark two? Reading through the comments I ran across yours. I have a perfectly preserved canon C 100 mark two with its original case and packaging +4 different lenses and filters. Happy to have a conversation if you’re interested. Thanks! Mike.
Question: Do you have any tricks to make an image appear sharp without being bitey? I keep struggling with this in my own work. I play around with a still frame, and of course the more sharp it is, the better it looks. (within reason) However, once I then play the video, it seems like I have to back off that point by quite a bit. I guess this makes sense, but I always struggle with finding the right balance between sharp but not bitey.
I still have mine from when I bought it after the first price drop. I still don't know why they have that funky progressive wrapped in interlace - If you bring progressive clips into an editing programme it usually reads as interlaced and drops the resolution unless you tell it that it's progressive. I'm surprised how well it upscales, and I'd love to know if it's really capable of more than the official specs if it was Magic Lanterned
@@jakehayden998 I seem to remember a post saying they were warned off the cinema line by Canon. Obviously the C100 has a lot of things that ML brought anyway, zebras, peaking etc. but I can't help wondering if it could really record 4K if pushed (even if it was limited duration)

Yes, the mk2 has much better features, such as MP4 and AVCHD recording, 50/60fps, a better adjustable viewfinder, a fully flip out screen, dual pixel autofocus built in, and a built in mic for scratch audio if you don't have the top handle attached.
The usual "you can get this now for x $$" = double the price when I look that up on ebay. Like in this video C100 min 800$ But I also saw a video on Lieca TL, exactly the same Fuji x-m1 - same
$8,000?? Nope. It was closer to $5,000. I own two and purchased my first new close to the release date in 2012. Or am I missing something? That is a huge $3,000 difference. And in many cases, it’s being sold for at least 50% more than claimed here. I mean no offense, but you are way off on pricing, which is and always will be a big factor when buying new or used.
If They make C100 Mkiii with a 4,5k internal, +4 stops of nd, one more screw on the top handle and internal 10bit 422 I dare any aspiring filmmaker who would look around for other camera

man, i think the crunchy constrast on the blacks happens because you put rec709 on gamma output, but for majority of monitors today we use 2.4 gamma, that is kind of a bit flat contrast gamma, but is okay and the media standard nowadays
I really enjoyed to work with the C100 and in fact preferred it compared to the C200 in many aspects.
I still use the C100 for live streaming. Great camera.
I love this cam so much that I bought 3 in total. Coming from 5dii this is a huge improvement
Yeah it would be a big bump up from the 5d. What kind of lenses are you using?
I have this camera tbh my Sony a6500 blows it out of the water .
Hi thank you for the great video Does this mean that today a comparable video quality can be had from a 500 USD new camera ? i am impressed This was very good indeed
C 100 I and II are the best bang for the buck ENG camera. Great for learning as well.
Except people in my area tend to think their used beat up C100 is still worth $2000 🙄
It really happens. People love their gear and think it should be valued astronomically.
I can't afford it even for 500$.
@maxonwax6172 stick to phone filming if you can't afford 500. It's worth saving the little extra
Can sell you one for $1,700.
It has been only used for 1 year, none heavily as a plan c camera, and was sitting in a bag since 2015, haha 😅 (so pretty much in a brand-new condition...)
@@BrewBro I just picked up a c100 mk2 for £720
its interesting because the file structure looks like a blu ray when opened up on a pc with the stream files and the rest
I loved the c100 Mark II. But 3 of the 3 I bought used were broken in some way. I loved it though.
Gotta get that OWLCOLOR picture profile to take it over the edge! 😉😉
I did❤
the best
Just watch that ND filter knob. I have an entire shoot with it having not quite seated out and once I got to post noticed there’s a shadow in my top left
Thanks for the video! trying to make a decision at the moment. How does the C100 match up against the C100 II, C200, or C300? I’m having trouble pinpointing which models are newer and what features differ.
I still LOVE mine.
We bought a house because of the C100. Great camera, especially fun uncontrollable documentary style situations.
Almost bought the C100 in 2013 but then decided to get the Canon 1Dc. Like the colour and look of the original clog.
nice. Thank you!
Ok, question I keep asking myself. What would you rather buy for roughly $500? GH5 (10bit) or c100 (xlr, ND, long battery)
wondering the exact same thing!
I had both and I must say the GH5 Videostuff in the body of the C100 and I would be totally satisfied
C100 for long format recordings, like conferences (XLR required in pro environment). MILC for creative and short stuff.
Fantastic.
Hello! Is this camera still worth buying in 2024? C100 MKi
Another thing you forgot to mention is the autofocus. For a camera with every other aspect being the opposite of anxiety inducing, I found that the focus is what you have to watch out for the most. It takes two to three seconds to lock an and doesn't have any type of tracking.
YES
I have that camera and I love it, I just wish it was a bit lighter, hand holding kills me, and brining a monopod is very annoying
still use it. with the c300iii and the c70
I have a canon r6 mkii with clog3.. just like to know does this camera give me a better cinematic image?
My first cinema camera, I loved it so much. Still don't know why I sold it...
one of the best camera you can purchase, I still have 3 of them
I used the C100 for a short film a few months, and the image quality is just not there for me. Just to name a few gripes I had with it:
1- The evf is subpar.
I agree the image is certainly starting to show its age. What kind of lenses did you shoot on for your short?
@@jakehayden998 I used a Rokinon/Samyang set of f/1.4s, the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 and the Canon 24-105mm f/4 MKII.
I know the Rokinons aren’t the sharpest of the bunch, but I was shooting stopped down (mainly for focus accuracy) and it still was quite soft.
The only lens that I enjoyed was the 24-105mm because it had IS and it worked pretty well for some of the handheld shots we did.
One of my favorite cameras if you don't need slow motion.. 60iyiyi
I had the mk2 for a while, and I loved it.
explain your settings?
Worth remembering that if you added a Atomos Ninja 2 you could get a 4:2:2 image essentially turning the C100
Into a C300 for way less money. Glory days.
Beside the recording features, what is the differences between the c100 and c300 ?
@@carminedepaola8018 300 has 60p in 720, SDI and genlock and the body is a bit larger.
@@carminedepaola8018 24Mbps vs 50Mbps, SD vs CF cards, 4:2:0 vs 4:2:2 internal ...
@@MeetupvideoUK with an external recorder there is any difference?
you're still only getting an 8 bit 4:2:0 file...just wrapped in a 10 bit wrapper...the C100 and C100mkii only output 8 bit 4:2:0 data via HDMI...I have 3 Canon C100mkiis and use a Ninja Blade with one when shooting
Why did canon just seem to stop after the c70? They were on a roll with their c line.
Probably switched their focus to smaller mirrorless like the R5C.
I am almost forget this camera
What are the details of the sensor. How is this camera better than a mirrorless camera like a Canon R50?
this or bbmp 4k?
Here is a footage I took on Sony HVR Z1U on cineframe mode: ruclips.net/video/BROrbU_dCr4/видео.htmlsi=mhYsZvETAlscU7ho . Auto focus. Recorded the footage on mini dv and then transferred to sony mrc digital recorder than uploaded to the youtube. I'm the bass player on 6 string baritone burns bass london. :)
Leica Summicrons are legendary. The C100 is just a good camera for its price.
interesting. I really would love to grab an affortable MK2
I still use it
I still have mine from when I bought it after the first price drop.
That’s pretty interesting to think about. I never considered what third-party software could do with the C100
@@jakehayden998 I seem to remember a post saying they were warned off the cinema line by Canon.
Obviously the C100 has a lot of things that ML brought anyway, zebras, peaking etc. but I can't help wondering if it could really record 4K if pushed (even if it was limited duration)
500 thats realy good. I dont think you will get one in europe for that price, but maybe... Im gonna buy a 5dmk2 for 250 euros. The raw footage of it is prety frekin good... And still makes good photos... Will see how it goes...
But in general. C100 does look like much more profesional video. Nd filters saves alot of trouble. Normal sound recording. And the image obviously looks worked on. I mean they tried for video to look good...
Mark 2 has gone to just £200 extra, would you say the difference is worth it?
Yes, the mk2 has much better features, such as MP4 and AVCHD recording, 50/60fps, a better adjustable viewfinder, a fully flip out screen, dual pixel autofocus built in, and a built in mic for scratch audio if you don't have the top handle attached.
@@UKHeritageRailways thank you 💪
focus peaking in 2012?? why do i feel like this was way ahead of its time?
Best camera! I still have one ;)
How would you grade te autofocus performance?
where are rushing with that mumbling? is there a time limitation for youtube videos?
What's the lens attached to C100 ?
Right but what about the dragon masters episode?
That’s coming this summer, hold your horses 🐴
Unfortunately I can’t find one for $500’ most are about $900
The usual "you can get this now for x $$"
=
double the price when I look that up on ebay. Like in this video C100 min 800$
But I also saw a video on Lieca TL, exactly the same
Fuji x-m1 - same
The EVF was panned on it's original launch, so has always been considered as rubbish.
"you can find it as low as 500$". Yes good luck with this
What lens do you have in the thumbnail?
An old Leica Summicron-r 50mm f/2
The only problem is finding one in mint condition. I wish Canon still manufactured this.
If They make C100 Mkiii with a 4,5k internal, +4 stops of nd, one more screw on the top handle and internal 10bit 422 I dare any aspiring filmmaker who would look around for other camera
almost C300 mk2 :) except 4.5k
@@MeetupvideoUK yeah, to be fair 4k is already good enough but canon likes to do downsampling resolution so… Even EOS R7 has 4k fine (downscaling from 8k)
Nice but I prefer the Sony FS5
I don't say it too often, but Oh My God!!! Those are definitely THUGS. Gun out on a traffic stop, opening the door and hauling out the occupants!! It's all so wrong!!!!
