I'm pretty sure I speak for a lot of people when I say. The reason I like your reviews so much is ---- you are real! I mean you don't go fully technical to display your superior camera knowledge. You put the time in, and make it so relatable to your viewers. Not to mention your jokes are awesome AND you have had dogs in your last few videos. BOOO YAHHH!!
Wow. You’re review was really informative Gene. I was so sick of all the other reviewers doing the same thing over and over. The night iPhone comparison part was genius.
I've been tired of finding a perfect camera in a budget, and had an eye on M50, but I was unable to understand the qualities of it. You came to rescue. This was such a helpful video. Lots of love. A small RUclipsr here. :)
I've watched a LOT of videos on this camera... I was pretty much sold on it a few days ago but this one sealed the deal. Seeing comparison shots (esp the low light) made a huge diff. I'm new to the game so getting as much info as possible. Great video thanx!
I am a Sony user, my full frame 4k camera is about 4 stops ISO advantages over M50. However, I think people are missing the points here. It is a very balanced and complete review about M50 as a vlogging camera. It's not like as if this crushes every camera in the market. But with the Canon color science, dpaf, vari angle touchscreen, the smallest form factor for vlogging, it's still very recommendable even without perfect 4k specs.
This video literally saved me for going for the M50 lol. Not having a headphone jack is fine but not being able to monitor audio? That's a deal breaker.
I got an aftermarket plug in battery adapter, which was a game changer for my M50. Often times I would run out of battery mid video and have to switch out my batteries. Now that is no longer an issue because I have the adapter that gives me power right through the bottom hidden cover of the camera battery door. It's amazing. No more battery issues.
Potato, man, I love all of your reviews.... probably watched hours of your videos... good stuff. I have to disagree with you about 4k though. Even if you ultimately produce 1080p, 4k is EXTREMELY useful. You have the option of down-scaling, cropping, etc. Options are always good and the simple fact that Canon cropped 4k AND removed PDAF in 4k mode made this camera a non-starter for so many people. I don't believe they did it because they didn't have the processing power. This is what Canon has been criticized for lately and why Sony has been killing it. Let's see what the Canon EOS R offers us...
I love the size of the camera and the weight.. but you can't compare it to the higher end stuff IMHO.. Panasonic GH5 or some of the Sony's are better on the eye.. just to heavy OR in sony's case no flip screen. So for now, this is the best compact vlogging camera because of the mic jack/and being mirrorless.
Just bought the M50 a couple months ago and still learning the ins and outs of it. This video was super helpful and easy to understand! Thank you for the content 👌🏼
You should make a video about how you moved to LA out of high school and how you managed financially. I know there are some people here who could use that advice

Great informational video. As far as m50 durability. My m50 fell about 3 feet off a bridge and survived the fall wothout a scratch...have to say I was amazed.
In August 2019, all I can say is, that once you get used to a really nice 4k display you become really good at discerning video quality and you really can tell the difference. However, regardless of the display, the person doing the filming has to be doing their job correctly for the quality to translate to the display in the best quality possible. 4k shot in the wrong settings can look worse than a fantastic 720p shot. This is also where the individual camera comes into play too and let’s not forget the most important factor: good lighting. For what it’s worth, my 4k display is a 65” LG tv.
This is one of the best review and explanation of eos m50. In 10 minutes your cover most of the important topic we should know! Plus there's lot of beautiful outdoor video. Thumbs up for this
I do audio and Voice Over primarily. Just now getting back into video after too many years in commercial TV. (When I started in TV we shot on 16mm film.) So, here's my take. Only a dog can discern the audio quality between a lossy, compressed audio format like Mp3 and .wav or .aiff. So, even at 720p it's hard for me to tell the difference. 4K is just another marketing ploy to get us to change out our stuff so the camera makers can make more money.
Man, you are really fresh air through all those standardised reviewers. So many clever ideas and real word usage information, not reading the specs stuff. Keep it up! Subscribed!
This was just so close for me. 4K? Check, but no DPAF. 120fps? Check, but in 720p. This was so close to what I wanted, but so far off in reality. Let's go, Canon. Cater to my specific needs lol. EDIT: Nice, I didn't know it had focus peaking. That does make more sense, or at least makes it not fully pointless.
I just bought this camera for my wife with the EF adapter. Looking forward to seeing how the autofocus works with my Canon L wide aperture lenses like my 70-200 2.8L, my 85 1.2L, and my 100 macro 2.8L
I was so worried about starting a youtube channel about being a PhD student because most of my day is spent in my house which is painted pretty dark in the nicest spaces. However, after seeing that iPhone comparison I don't think I have anything to worry about. If you could still see pretty well in that dark of light, my house shouldn't be a problem. I'm buying the camera now. Great video!

I just bought it and LOVE it. Perfect portable size, amazing solid feel. 4K video can't even be handled by most screens and is lost on phones - it's a vanity feature for vlogging. Reality check - unless you are filming Lord of the Rings then this is everything you need!
That shot test at 12.5k ISO in real world situation is just what i need to know on how good this camera perform. And the comparison between F4 and F1.8 was a really good comparison. What a great review. Dive in straight to the usage and performance of the camera in real world situation.
I use the Canon M50 along with the 10-18mm wide angle lens and this camera is AMAZING. If anyone has been thinking about getting it, GET IT YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!!!!!
Thanks for adding the gx7 battery life. I wanted that until I seen it only does 1h 27m. I need something that can go continuously at least twice as long for streaming.
for streaming you have a stable power source. you can buy a dummy battery with an extra cable (just search for dummy battery canon m50 on amazon) which you can connect to any powersource basically. normal LP-E12 for the M50 are 860mAh or something close to that, with the dummy battery you can hook it up to massive 20000mAh battery packs if you want to.

This seems like a great camera for Vloging, just not something I do, I feel like the A6300 is better for anything else, the Full sensor 4K at ISO 12.800 is soooo much better that what is shown here, how is the Dynamic range I'm the M50. Great video like always, loved it!
@@AugmentedGravity it also doesn't NEED to be shot in full HD 1080p 24fps, but that's the current standard, which is leaning toward 4k now. It's subjective what quality is "necessary"
I struggled with that when I upgraded from my Canon T6. I ended up choosing the SL2 because it was larger (better for handheld shooting) and it didn't need the adapter for my EF lenses like the M50. Thanks for making such a useful review of the M50, Gene. I watched about a buh-zillion M50 reviews, but yours was the one that made me pull the trigger and buy it.
A followup on M50 vs M6 would be amazing. Both aimed at a very similiar crowd and like me alot of people seem to have the choice between the two. The 4k Sounds good for specific things (close ups of food etc). Is the basic Image quality in 1080p so different from the M6? The dislay position of the M6 is a bit more to my liking since it doesn't make the whole camera too wide (even if i have to hack a mic to the body). For me it's important to have a great camera that doesn't scream "look at me", like the Canon DSLR style bodies tend to do. Then again: the 4K option, even if cropped, sounds kinda cool, as does the ability not having to McGuyver the mic to it.

A7III
I got it a month ago after max yuryev tested out the low light performances
have to remember the a7iii is almost 3 times the price of the m50 with a decent lens
true, but being able to shoot almost any light conditions well worth the price
Lucky Never Don"t forget for vlogging, Canon has the biggest user base, easier to be more popular if you use Canon gears.
Most helpful review of this camera yet! Thanks bro! Didn’t know you can’t visually monitor the audio!
Jorge Aguilera agreed
Fully agree! Answered most of the questions I had about this camera. Great video, thanks!
Should I upgrade my old mirrorless camera or just get a drone sites.google.com/site/UpcomingDrone2018
Jorge Aguilera bc it automatically does the audio. It auto adjusts so it won’t peak
This video literally saved me for going for the M50 lol. Not having a headphone jack is fine but not being able to monitor audio? That's a deal breaker.
Was that f/1.8 50mm? If yes, then how did get a nice wide angle, you both were in the frame
nah 18-35 1.8
