1080 P with no dynamic scaling or AI upscaling is IMO just unacceptable for this gen. It's pretty much expected that EVERYONE who has a Series X or PS5 is going to be playing on a big 40-70 inch 4k display as they have become much more affordable, and 1080 p blown up on a big 4k screen just simply looks like a blurry mess. All games this gen should be shooting for 1440 P 60 FPS, employing whatever resolution tricks and dynamic scaling they possibly can to balance visuals with performance. Dropping it all the way to 1080 P is just giving up IMO

There is no reason Series S can't do 1080p60, and for that matter PS5 and Series X should be doing 4K60.
What's happening here is the developers let some artists bicker and complain about "not enough sparkles" or some such BS so they pumped up effects to the point where resolution and framerates are driven into the ground.
On a PC equivalent to PS5 and Series X you will easily hit 4K60 on medium settings, the console developers just let their personal bias dictate that consoles are forced to play with a blurry image.

@xyzo No it wasn't, what are you talking about? The GTX 1070 was a lower mid range in 2017 and getting old rapidly, not upper mid. The card was barely mid range when it was released, which was the year prior. A year is a long time in the GPU space and even longer in the console space, so by 2017, the 1070 was teetering on being a lower mid range card. The GTX 1080 was the true upper mid range card by then and then mid range by 2017 when the GTX 1080 ti was released.
The CPU's are a little bit more debatable, due to Moor's Law kicking in and improvements being extremely miniscule with each generation that came out.
The consoles had decent specs on release, but they were already obsolete and were going to age very quickly, as Nvidia's next line was on the way to coming out, which absolutely rofflestomped them. Consoles are always behind by default, it's just by how much. 8th gen was embarrassingly behind; 7th gen not so much so.
The bottom line is, we can see they're already struggling and what they sold to those who don't know as next gen, is not next gen at all. You're all only starting to see performance that PC players were seeing years prior and are always going to be behind.
Sure, you may start to see 4K 60 fps on High settings at best on later releases, but only for early 8th gen quality games, which are far less demanding. On average you'll manage only medium/high at 1440p upscaled 60fps for the mid cycle 8th gen stuff and Cyperpunk and this game has illustrated that they have to make cut backs for the late 8th gen projects approaching 9th gen, as the hardware clearly can't handle it, you're pegged to 1080p if you want 60 fps with the details turned up or they'll have to drop them quite a bit for the hgher res and framerate. You can't blame it on architectural differences anymore and developers not understanding the hardware, the consoles are bonafide PC architecture now. What you see is what you get.
The consoles are not as far behind as the XBox One and PS4 were at their respective releases, but they're still behind now.
PC players were enjoying top end 8th gen performance as early as 2015, to put things into perspective for you. Not saying they all could afford the tech at the time, but the hardware was on the table is all I'm saying.
