Update: Techland released a patch that allows for 60 FPS (at 936p) on Xbox Series S.
The extended support this game is absolutely commendable, life circumstances prevented me from getting the sequel day one; but will certainly buy it. As a PC player I agree with the conclusion, trading some image quality by going 1440p instead of 4k is generally preferable for the increase in fluidity; the jump from 1080p to 1440p is much bigger than that of 1440p to 4k to my eyes (which are getting old) - but getting at least 60 FPS is a much bigger improvement.
You could already play the game at 60fps through FPS Boost before the next-gen update.
It's not that commendable. It's not a great optimization and the Series S doesn't even get 60fps, which would easily be achievable.
I don’t notice a difference between 1440p and 4k honestly. That’s coming from a pc player
@@fesoy1174 what the hell do you mean? Do you even know how old this game is? Also, do you know how much the devs have supported this game?
@@fesoy1174 The 7 years of post release support is commendable, not necessarily this one specific instance.
To me this shows what AAA games should be: pieces of high budget art that's preserved across many generations of hardware for anyone to play and enjoy. Assuming the title wasn't just churned out for easy cash, of course.

All I know is last gen there was remaster after remaster with some missing the tone of the original like the Return to Arkham remaster. Both Dying Light and Dying Light 2 are among my all-time favorites.
It’s difficult to say why but I feel the old adage ‘the whole is more than the sum of its parts’ applies here.
The moment to moment gameplay is so engaging that it instantly grabs my attention in a way that most modern games have forgotten how to do.
@@Elatenl parkour? this is a game about running around from point A to B yes but it has a well designed map that works wonders with the parkour systems to make the game constantly fun just n trying to spring around combos to get around the terrain faster (and most importantly cooler)

I still prefer this game over the second.
Dying light 2 also got a 60fps balanced mode for series x and a performance mode for the series s

Plsss rocksteady update Arkham Knight that’s literally All I want it should’ve been done when The Batman released would’ve gain traction for the game again with a next gen update and add Battinsons suit
Man, I absolutely love this game's main theme that plays in the background. So ominous and depressive, but excellent nonetheless. It would be a well suited theme for our last stage act before our time as a race comes crashing down and we disappear forever.
I was gonna post the same but you said it perfect. When I started Dying Light 2 with a friend a month ago they ran that theme tune in the intro sequences a bit and it was chills all the way.

Techland's output since Dead island has been absolutely fantastic. I've really connected with all their first person games and the physicality of the combat, and now parkour, really is a unique experience in gaming to this day with Dark Messiah from Arkane being one of the other few similar experiences.
Honestly, their support for Dying Light and the overall quality of that game had me pick up DL2 at launch, sight unseen. Personally, after putting in many hours, i feel DL1 is the stronger game overall but DL2 is certainly not bad. I just feel the whole package of setting, music and characters is stronger in the first game.
Wait till they blast DL2 with more content.
@@IAMNOTRANA yup this. I think people keep forgetting that they have had many more years to refine the game overall
@@IAMNOTRANA that's why I'm kinda glad horizon 2 stole me away from dying light 2. Hopefully when I get back to it, it's a much better experience.

Very odd considering there are more Series S consoles than Series X in the wild.
They just keep downgrading this console man I swear
Why the hell would anyone buy a series s?
idk, even my old GPU from 2013 could run Dying Light at 1080p/60fps, and the Series S should be much faster than that.
Because it’s terrible/weak.
I’ve been saying this since day one. The One X is better than the Series S. Series S users are mostly mentally on the slower side/brain dead anyways, so just let them have their fun.
The fact they gave an update is absolutely amazing and very generous but I do have one issue and that’s considering dying light is a 7 year old game at this point I’m very surprised they weren’t able to do 4K 60fps considering the next gen consoles are more than capable of being able to run it at that

While Techland, a small studio, has provided years of content and carefully listened to fans about ways to improve their games, just gave us a free next gen upgrade. It really goes to show the nature of some corporations

You would have thought 12 tflops could run this old game at 4k 60 no problem 🤷🏻♂️
I don't know why the ps5/xbox sx didn't get a 4k 60 mode, a pc with similar hardware can easily get 60 fps in 4k.
My first thought as well. Surely ps5/series x can both handle it?
It's running under backwards compatibility. And consoles don't scale the same as PC necessarily.
Sometimes a PC with similar specs to console performs worse and sometimes it performs better.
Dying light on the 1.8 teraflops PS4 runs at 1080p.
At 1440p/60 you are pushing twice the pixels at twice the speed, so a 4x boost.
At 4k/60 you would be pushing 4 times the pixels at twice the speed, an 8x boost.
1.8 tflops x 8 is 14.4 tflops. And neither console has that power on native mode, let alone back compat mode.
Their engine must be really unoptimized. A 2015 game that cant reach 4K 60 on Series X and PS5? And the Series S is 30 fps!? On a 7 year old game
It's just like GTA V EE.
Or just be grateful that they took the time to do this when they didn’t have to? Jeez.
@@JamieRobert_ exactly
Most games on series S are 30fps, doesn't surprise me. It's overrated lol. That console shouldve been marketed as the 1080p version of the series x then every game would be 60fps.
I can't think of a single large game that's a solid 4k 60 fps. That's barely feasible on high end pc either. That's why dlss and other techniques are important but that's not happening for 2015 game like dying light unless they remastered it for a re release. Of course that's not worth it at this time.
It's so nice to see a 2015 game receiving an update to take advantage of the PS5 hardware. C'mon Sony, give us 60 fps Bloodborne!
Yes. It's also funny/interesting the game is getting proper PS4P and X1X support now as well.
That game absolutely needs the full Bluepoint treatment.
It’s not Sony, it’s From.
They never go back and fix their games.
Sony would have to hire another company to make a patch or remaster.
But that would cost a ton of money because the new company or dev team would first have to get to know the game and it’s code in and out.
As long as From doesn’t do it, there won’t be a Patch ever.
It’s sad but that’s the truth.
Unless Sony request a Remaster or Remake like the one Blue Box did with Demon’s Souls, it ain’t happening.
I’m gonna put off playing the game until it is available in a playable state which to me it currently isn’t. If I have to wait until the PS6, I don’t mind.
@@Lock2002ful Considering a single modder managed to unlock the framerate with few issues, it should not take a small team of devs and testers with access to the source code more than a month of light labour to get the game running at 60.
I imagine Sony wants to sell you that at some point.
Ah yes 7 years to get 30fps again 🙄
Also yes, I once again get to hear how much Oliver thinks the Series S sucks (since he only reviews these types of games that are really old or don't get proper optimization).

Ray tracing is a beast. I see no ray tracing on the series s that wont drop fidelity to 800p which for me is unacceptable. I hate 1080p unless its a butter smooth 60fps or more.
Then the game isnt cpu bound, its gpu bound, especially since the game has lower than low LODs, that tells you the gpu cant handle the extra load/details.
@@yod1213 Except you could hit 60fps on much slower GPUs running this game. It's an old game where it was made with the last gen CPUs in mind. This should be able to hit a solid 60fps when a GTX 770 could do it.

because that someone is not you? And people have preferences?
If the PS4 version of this game was 1080p then wouldn't logic dictate the PS4 Pro should be 1440p minimum and the Xbox One X 2160? Techland clearly just don't really know how to optimize a game like they should.
You would think so but remember the PS4 Pro doesn't have that much faster a CPU, and while the GPU is 2.2 times the "power" the memory bandwidth is not that much more than PS4 amateur. 23% more bandwidth, but you are pushing 77% more pixels at 1440p, and the pixel fill rate for PS4 Pro is only 13% higher than PS4. As for One X, you are pushing 4x the pixels at 4K, IMO, the One X doesn't have the pixel fill rate for that, it is much faster than the PS4, but only has 46% more pixel fill rate. How are you going to push 4x the pixels with only 46% more fill-rate? I'm sure it could be done with some awesome design/programming, but I think you can only do so much with a 7 year old game.

As soon as the update came out, I was happy to see how smooth everything was, even at the 4K 30 mode. I didn't see a point in using the 1080 60 fps mode after trying it, when I have a 4K tv so naturally I landed in the middle on the 1440p mode which to me, 2K resolution has always looked quite close in games to 4K due to dynamic resolution scaling on the PS4 pro that I got so used to. For reference, the 2070S can get roughly 50fps at 4K in this game.

@@SimonCheesewright Not really, it has much higher counts in certain areas, while matching the PS4 Pro in most. Crucially it is a much "faster" console than the PS4 Pro, and therefore has 71% higher pixel fill rate, while nearly matching the PS4 Pro on texel fill rate at 95%. Fundamentally it is exactly the same thing that Cerny said in regard to the PS5 vs the Series X, less CUs but much faster, "rising tide raises all boats".
I would consider the Series S and PS4 Pro about even in GPU power, despite the Pro have 80% more CUs. The CUs in the Series S are MUCH faster, more efficient and an entire generation more feature rich. But let's not discuss the memory subsystem or CPU of these consoles, as the PS4 Pro will be handily beaten around the face and neck, if it had one. 😉 I'm not pissing on the PS4 Pro, I love it, but I'm not at all confused on just how far ahead the Series S is in many areas.

As for Resident Evil, if you disable RT it runs fine at 1440p. I don't think anyone that really is in to the technology as this group is, believe the Series S is a RT capable machine, it has it, and it can be used, but the performance hit is too drastic. But considering it is above 30 most of the time with RT, it is still above the PS4 Pro fps at 4K without RT, although it needs a cap at 30 if it doesn't have one yet.
SO really you haven't given me any real basis for the PS4 Pro being more powerful than the Series S, except your subjectively flawed narrative. I showed you the areas where the SS is demonstrably more powerful, without even hitting on CPU resources or i/o etc. I guarantee that future titles will be using the Series S in ways that the PS4 Pro could never hope to match, it is overall simply not as powerful as the SS.

I'd still like a ps5 patch for the original dead island and riptide. i know it will never happen but i was playing it through and got a ps5 before finishing it. i love that game
A 7 years old getting update for free?
Really niiiiiceee
Would rather not get a free update, now
This just makes me depressed at how weak next gen is already
Really dislike motion blur. First thing I disable.
This was why i didn't like the game on pc it played sluggish and to many jaggies for me even on a 3080 it still played bad for me also i don't like the colour its mostly bland and brown and yellow and dull the textures are poor
2:15 I find it interesting that the performance targets are that low. I played the game on a 3060ti at 1440p and a locked 120fps at max settings, so I don't see why the consoles stuck at their original settings couldn't handle 4K60fps.
Because consoles (even the ps5 and series x) aren't as powerful as you might think. Yes they are more powerful than the ps4 and xbox one were, but actually there new machines are still not fully 4k 60 capable.
@@luukherfst1209 there have been plenty of games that hit 4K60, usually older titles getting a patch
Im on ps5 with a 4k LG nanocell tv. Will I see a difference between 1080p and 1440p resolution? Or do I need a 1440p monitor to benefit from the 1440p resolution?
PS5 will run 1440p internally then your tv will upscale the image to 4k.
Bespoke
This game is much better than the sequel for me. The series X has had 60fps in the game for ages.
good to get some update of a good game
BUT
i was playing it back then, on a gpu way weaker than a series S gpu (it was a gtx 760 or 290 can't tell), and i had a stable 60fps... maybe it wasn't 1080p, but please....
who are you, you sound like pfizer salesman.. (aka snakeoiler)
Xbox Series S optimization so far has been an embarrassment and will go down as one of the least next gen feeling consoles of all time, and as soon as Xbox Series X's are available at GameStop at retail price, I'm instantly trading it in. It's actually laughable how they marketed this piece of hot garbage.
next we need bloodborne with similar update asap
I seriously feel bad for anyone who bought a Series S. I would be so fucking pissed with every announcement like this that a game can't reach 60fps. That console ain't gonna last long at all.
I have been playing the 1440 60fps mode, and man it feels great!
i playing this game on laptop have 820m gpu with 720p 30 fps
Why did the series S only get a 1080 30 when it was running back compat with fps boost enabled?
It ran really well, with really good frame stability but now that’s snuffed?
???
you heard the review they said it can handle the 60 fps but techland too lazy to do it
thats what you get when Microsoft lied about Series S being a new generation.
It was 900p60. Now it's 1440p30. I'd also call that a downgrade because it's a forced change, not a choice.
@@Matt-bk2rt Microsoft actually managed to make the game run at 60 fps on Series S. What are you talking about
@@Matt-bk2rt okay clown
I literally uninstalled dl2 and reinstalled this. I was horribly disappointed with dl2. Parkour was great but most everything else was a downgrade. Human on human combat was improved too but zombie combat got worse. Story was abysmal and the loot system sucks compared to the first.
Whyyyyy is Ps4 pro left out 😢😢😢
1440p on xb1x awesome
DL1 > DL2.
Just grabbed a copy for $7.50 on eBay! Love my series x for these updates on “older” games, game pass can suck it
High performance on One X runs at 30fps/1080p while the non-performance run not at lower specs, not same specs, but at higher specs - 30fps/1440p?
Something is wrong here.
This is pathetic they don't even try ps5 and series x should be running this game at 4k 60 fps easy and series s at 1440p 60fps.
Didn't the Switch version have TAA with upscaling? Why don't use it here to get rid of shimmering?
I remember dying light and the witcher 3 certifying next gen gaming for me back on previous consoles!
I was in high school at the time, and I recall been absolutely hyped to hell for Bloodborne, Fallout 4, and Doom 2016. Good times.
@@Bigdaddymittens i agree bloodborne was the only game i played for the next 8 months lol
I've been playing through the game recently on the Series X with the frame boost enabled. Was really enjoying it given how smooth it played. Really excited that they have native support for it now with higher resolutions. That was my only thing was I wished that it'd been more than 1080p. So happy that they are still supporting this game given how old it is.
I’m so glad I got a PS5 digital instead of a Series S
Digital lol so I guess you like not owning ur games u paid for
This should 100% have been released before Dying Light 2, right?
But I still need to finish DL1 to finally jump into DL2 with a friend.
The timing is still weird though..
So you just play this on a ps5 hard-drive and get the upgrades? I wanna check it out cuz it looks great(I was looking for a ps5 version to download and then thought maybe it just plays better on ps5(next gen)
People bash on the Series S forgetting it was made for people on a budget or parents who wanna give something affordable for the kids.
Naw the series s was brought to market as a 1440p60 machine
Its underperforming and devs are complaining about it..wish they did a series x digital instead ..i dont care about budget gamers, buy a used last gen console for ur kids or if ur on a budget dont hold everyone else back
@@ddp5406 looking at the promos, you're right. I guess i always figured, it being more cheap, that was the audience they were looking for. I still see it that way though. If not, why make a budget version in the first place? But facts are facts, you're right.
@@aleynino Sony considered a lower specced and lower price PS5 in the 250-300 dollar range but Cerny overruled the decision. He didn’t see the point with a reduced power PS5, since it would have had a shorter lifecycle overall and complicated Sony’s first party output.
The Series S has been horribly mismarketed by Microsoft. They should have marketed it for what it is; an affordable way to play games on Gamepass with reduced settings for gamers on a strict budget.
They should have plainly stated that the console was optimized primarily for smaller 1080p TV sets (which many budget gamers, especially younger gamers living with their parents, are still using and will be using for the foreseeable future) @ 30 frames per second. It would basically be visually equivalent to an 8th Gen console like the PS4, but with much faster loading times.
They set the standard too high with the marketing. If they had lowered the expectations instead of claiming 1440p/60 optimized, people would probably be pleasantly surprised with the Series S’s performance, since a substantial number of titles do offer 1080p/60 with DRS modes as an option.
But it should have been marketed as a native 1080p/30fps console first and foremost. Keep expectations low with low end hardware. I’ll give Microsoft credit for doing something no one else has tried before, but they completely botched the marketing.
dying light 1 was such a fun game. still a great time
