  • Dying Light is out soon for Nintendo Switch - and Digital Foundry has exclusive access to the game. This is one of the most challenging ports we've seen and Techland has done a remarkable job in scaling down and optimising this brilliant game for a vintage 2015 mobile chipset. John Linneman has all of the details.

I really love these Nintendo Switch ports, I've always enjoyed seeing how developers need to adapt certain aspects of the game to make it work on a handheld, from Contra 3 on the Game Boy to Super Monkey Ball JR and Smashing Drive on the GBA.
In my opinion as much as the game suffers with graphic downgrades it is much more impressive than these ''Cloud Edition'' on Switch ( Even more because some don't even make sense like KH 1.5 + 2.5 via cloud on Switch ), at least with the native ports I can actually play the games and without input lag.

You gotta have games with soul. They can still make the switch walk these ports instead of it crawling on it's nice. Games like doom eternall and such are truly wtf moments on the portable. They are a look into the future of nintendo. Nintendo continue making portables that can. Sure we got this and that more powerfull then nintendo. But all company's saw the green light due to the succes of switch to push tech. Switch could and now others can. Same will happen with switch 2/switch 3. If nintendo plays it good then they have a winning concept. The hardware will be less and less dated per new nintendo switch console. That's also they're goal.

They can be ported but it takes millions and millions of dollars and many many months and even years to port a game properly to the Switch while a cloud version is just 2 clicks and that's it really easy simple and easy to archive and cheaper (what those companies care more the cost of production).

I am BLOWN AWAY with how this game runs/looks on the Switch. I already owned/played it on the PC, but when it went on sale on the Switch, I had to bite. I only played about 4 hours of it on the PC, but on the Switch, I'm hooked.. in portable AND docked mode. Had I not seen the side-by-side examples in this video, I wouldn't have even noticed the visual differences. It's THAT good on the Switch. Compared to other ports, Wolfenstein being a simple example, it's just so much better from a framerate AND visual perspective. Like, night and day better. It just PLAYS so well. From loading to framerate to anything you can think of. It feels polished. If this game was a Switch exclusive, it would (in my opinion) easily be its top seller and a true technical marvel standout.
Here's another thing I noticed on the switch that isn't spoken about in this video. When playing this game in portable mode, the Switch stays *noticeably* cooler than it does in some of my other games. And that, in turn, gives me incredible battery life while playing this game. It's shocking really. My suspicion is that the patch which fixed the 36fps spikes (and locked it to 30) gave the hardware some 'headroom' - IE - it's not running full-tilt the entire time. Which is also impressive..

Looks really great. The unlocked framerate is a chance for overclocked models. I hope the developer is smart enough to give players an option instead of just locking the frame rate to 30FPS. Even tho 60FPS will probably out of the question, 40-50FPS should certainly be possible on an unlocked Switch in handheld mode, as long as its plugged into a power supply.

OH so people are falling for the scam of Cloud Gaming then ?
Fine for a Subscription service & free to play games - but otherwise it is a con, a con that lead people to ignore Google's attempt as it - and putting aside ownership issues and the ability of the developer to monkey about with the game post launch to it's detriment, - it does have some use I guess for demos and playable trade show reels. But even with my decent enough internet speed - I don't think it sounds like a great idea to me.
As for the game I'd say they did a good job - in some cases the diffuse shadows look nicer than the original (such as the jagged edges on the A-Pillar of the white van)

As always, all these Switch ports are so blurry and is the worst machine to play yet the most expensive out of all.
