  • A remarkable port from Feral Interactive. Alien Isolation features a few small downgrades from the original current-gen console versions, which are more than offset by a dramatic increase in image quality. See how the Switch game compares to both PS3 and PS4 in this extensive analysis.

      Agreed, but they could really use a "directors cut" that makes the game 6-12 hours instead of 30. What would have been the perfect thriller instead feels like a slog by the end.

      its a great game, but it does get really tedious and slow in the middle.
      interestingly when he said he would review mcc again on pc, someone told him to review isolation again.
      he replied 'Nope, I stand by that one.' people sometimes just don't enjoy popular games. like presonally i WOULD NOT rate any uncharted more than 7, any mario game more than 8 etc

      It has a huge advantage that other games don't, though: being a cross gen title to begin with. The game had already been built in a way that was compatible with Switch-like hardware, unlike something like The Witcher 3 which wasn't built with such a weak machine in mind.

    • @ThibautMahringer
      @ThibautMahringer 5 лет назад +29

      @AnEn 360's GPU is 220 Gflops and Switch is 393, not to forget the more recent architecture, mode RAM, newer APIs and so on. But I agree, ils outstanding that such a low hardware can show these results, I suppose it's NVIDIA's magic.
      And I agree, big open worlds are way harder to nail, but ports keeps getting better. Who knows how close the Switch can get.

    I’ll keep saying it every chance I get: if you’re a fan of the original Alien and/or a fan of horror games, you should absolutely play this game. It’s such a fantastic love letter to that original movie. In fact I’d say it feels more like a sequel to it than Aliens does (although a I do love that movie too). It looks like Alien, it sounds like Alien, and it absolutely nails that claustrophobic feeling and constant dread of Alien. It’s welcoming to newcomers (so even if you haven’t seen the films you should be fine), while it also fits perfectly into the movie canon with no continuity problems, which is more that can be said for... that _OTHER_ game. Such a shame that that train wreck of a game was probably what screwed up the sales of Isolation.

      Also enjoying GRID Autosport on Android. Smoother 30FPS on mobile. Even on The S8 it's very stable however 60FPS is off the cards on the S8 though the graphics mode is still offering the same settings as on Switch and better mobile hardware. The Galaxy S8 is also officially supported according to the game's developer.
      Basically as I said before Switch launched and after the S8 hit shelves one month after Nintendo Switch did; mobile phones are just as powerful as Switch.
      It must also be said that even older cheaper phones like the LG V30 will run GRID Autosport as well but performance may be lacking there... Oddly even with the 70% limit on CPU performance GRID played at a stable 30hz on a Samsung Galaxy S8. Battery life is worse on the S8 than on the new Switch but that's to be expected on a 3,000mAh battery.
      Asphalt 9 runs for 3:40 on the S10+ fully maxed out 60FPS competitive with the new more efficient Switch models.

    This is a fascinating comparison. Modern temporal AA techniques have introduced their own, new artifacts to rendering, but it can't be overstated how nice it is that they've essentially eliminated aliasing and shimmering in many games. And I have no doubt that as they improve and the processing gets faster, those temporal artifacts will diminish over time (har har).

    Honestly, this makes me wish that Nintendo's first party games started implementing proper AA technology. if the switch 2 could only output 1080p and 1440p when docked, the games could probably still stand up against next-gen if the processor could handle these AA solutions.

    Very impressive!
    It may sound superficial, but on PS4, this was a rare example where image quality (horrible shimmering and very washed out image) actually distracted me too much to go on playing.
    It also released rather early in this generation, so it really didn't do my expectations to a modern game justice in that regard. It rather felt like a Vita game (because they were usually sub-native) than a high-end blockbuster.
    Now that I think of it, DriveClub had similar issues back then.

      AA is not irrelevant at 4k. It's still needed.

      TAA is fine for 4k.

    • @francischambless5919
      @francischambless5919 5 лет назад +1

      @@nighttimestalker isn't TAA only for effects? Again that comes down to rendering, and those don't apply to textures specifically, it has to do with processing power. Slower processing and your renderer shows edges in scaling, but with a fast enough GPU/CPU, and with a screen that accommodates 60+ (100+ is more ideal in digital applications), you wouldn't notice happening with a high quality texture map.
      At least this is how I interpret it.

    I just finished playing the port on iOS - combined with the insane iPhone OLED screen, it literally is THE BEST experience I’ve ever had with *any* video game, much less a game from 2014. It’s honestly mind-boggling how good it is. This is a MASTERPIECE through and through. Game and port by Feral Interactive. Amazing. Also 2024 hardware, so loading times are nearly non-existent.

    You mentioned planar reflections in the video, is that how older games did reflections so well? I recently started playing Deus Ex for the first time and was shocked to see a game from 2000 could render such beautiful reflections. The marble floor of the HQ properly reflects everything in game and doesn't occlude or artifact when your perspective changes. How can a 20 year old game have clearer/better looking reflections than rt reflections in bf5?
    Is this something that's a pain to implement across every glossy surface, would it not work well on uneven or moving surfaces like water?

    • @JoaoVictor-hk7iv
      @JoaoVictor-hk7iv 5 лет назад

      Planar works well with moving water, just take a look at Half Life 2 or Wave Race: Blue Storm. I guess it's because of the move to deferred rendering. Just like we don't see MSAA on most modern games since it wouldn't work, it's probably the same for planar reflections.

    • @K1aric
      @K1aric 5 лет назад

      @@JoaoVictor-hk7iv yeah I've heard other people lement the lack of MSAA these days because it needs to be forward rendered or something? But this just creates more questions though because this Alien Isolation here uses both planar mapping and TAA. And Red Dead 2 uses both MSAA and TAA so how on earth does that work?

    • @K1aric
      @K1aric 5 лет назад

      The weakness of the Switch is the cpu part, not gpu, and GTA V is cpu dependant with the number of npc and AI. It's not the same thing to do a corridor game like Alien and an open world, but the port is still very impressive, insta buy for me and i have already the game on pc

    I have to disagree that the new anti-aliasing is better. It's a blurry mess imo, see the text above the door at 5:31 - much sharper on the PS4 than on the Switch. I'd rather have jaggies on some edges than a blur filter over the entire image.
