I don't think enough people out there appreciate how much of a goddamned masterpiece this game is. From the sound design, to the aesthetics, to the level architecture, to the AI, to the tight script, to the near-flawless voice acting, especially from the player character. It's not only a love letter to Alien, it's a game that stands perfectly well on its own legs.

I agree. I'm playing "The Witcher 3" right now - on hardest difficulty.
It's a brilliant game - one of the very best I have ever played.
But it doesn't hold a candle to Alien Isolation.
None of us realised what we were dealing with,
      The perfect game,
It's extreme beauty is matched only by its central character's living and breathing desire to kill you.

The alien and droids will sniff you out in lockers, cabinets AND under tables. Droids will "kick you to death" under a table no matter there is no possible contact between their foot and you. That keeps you from just hiding there infinitely. There are no truely safe hiding places that cannot be searched or atttacked. Droids cannot get u inside vents though but the alien can. And if you have never experienced the alien traveling through butthole vents you are lucky; IT CAN travel inside them too.

You got some things wrong actually.
The random loot thing; there's set locations you'll find loot in every play through, but whether something will spawn there is the random element, that and it might not always be the same thing - You might get a sensor unit one time, then some glue the next.
And the alien DOES have sense in it's tail, if you so much as walk into it, the alien will turn around and grab you.
    Everything else was bang on.
I still actively play this game so sadly gotta complain about those factors, but I learnt a few things like the amount of data they got to work with, the fact the Hacker tool wasn't based on a game boy!

Both Gamespot and IGN gave the game mediocre reviews. iirc Gamespot said that it was too scary or hard or something for them so they docked points for it. It makes me suspect that someone had an axe to grind or Sega didn't pay the reviewers enough money to get a decent score. Especially since both IGN and Gamespot have had multiple articles praising Alien Isolation since then

@@spatchmo6938 that whole bit about Gamespot is a goddamn made up lie. The reason why Isolation got stripped of score points is because for the reviewer it greatly overstayed its welcome/was too long, to the point where the game stopped being scary, instead repetitive, tedious and frustrating (due to challenging and punishing nature of Alien: Isolation too), not because it was "too scary" and definitely not because "they had personal gripes with Sega/they didn't paid them for the review" bullshit that is so popular. As much as I disagree with those reviews, and as much as I love Isolation myself, I also understand that it is a niche game with arguable imperfections, and that it is not going to be everyones cup of tea. While I still do think that Gamespot's and IGN's reviews of Isolation were tad unfair, mainly I believe that the reviewers approached the game and played through it with an incorrect mindset, where they might have wanted to beat it quickly, but Isolation just isn't about that, it strongly prohibits, discourages and punishes that, but in the end those are just speculations, and reviews still are opinions, and opinions differ, obviously, so do tastes.
Also, when we say "Gamespot gave it *that* score", we have to remember, that actually it's "a *reviewer* from Gamespot gave it *that* score". Gaming outlets, especially huge ones, rarely consist of one stuff member, one reviewer it's usually a place of many people with their own opinions, some of which align with that of their co-workers, some don't, and we can see that with Isolation too, while in the actual IGN review it got ~6/10, there was posted an article shortly after, or at least in the same year, where it was praised, called as "the Bravest game of 2014".

... was because they invented a brand new purpose-built graphics engine.
That's what they should do for "HALLOWEEN: Michael (part 1)" [see - I've given it a title :)]
My computer is now well over 10 years old, still running Windows 7 ... back in 2014, I had an ageing graphics card which I was prepared to upgrade if necessary ...

      @@sausagesausage ... another good idea.
I think "Westworld" done as a computer game - hopefully voiced by Rachel Evan Wood, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson etc.
It starts with you riding the transit train to DELOS - very similar to the opening of Half-Life (but much better). As you're sitting on the train, you are subjected to propaganda videos about the 'experience' to follow:
"At DELOS we believe in ULTIMATE customer satisfaction. Boy! - have we got a vacation for YOU!"
Then, during the opening tutorial level, you would get to choose your cowboy outfit, and the very same lady from series 1, who guides you through the tutorial, says "Welcome to Westworld" when you are done, as you board the train. [this tutorial section could also have a target range for practising shooting and combat skills]
The first mission is pathetically easy - TOTAL FREEDOM ... you can do whatever you want. Rape other robots, shoot everybody - anything your heart desires ...
But, the surprise is that your decisions in this first level affect how you'll be treated by the robots near the end of the game, once they've gone rogue and want to take their revenge on the customers. Essentially, the way you play level 1 determines the difficulty level near the end of the game.
Misbehave in level 1 too much and you'll have to contend with Dolores and Maeve hunting you down relentlessly near the end of the game (Maeve's special skill is that she can command any other robot in the vicinity to attack you, just by rolling her eyes! That includes things like vultures and rattlesnakes)
The "Westworld" main menu is basically two options, while the opening of the TV show (piano playing robot) is on a loop in the background.
The options, in bold letters, are:
      PLAY
      OPTIONS
There is no selectable skill level in the options - level 1 determines how hard the game is going to get for you.
Thanks for firing up my imagination sausage! :)

They're discussing their next move, when they hear rustling nearby. A facehugger leaps at them, and Ricardo instinctively shoves Amanda out of the way -putting himself in the crosshairs and getting A Face full of Alien Wingwong. The outcome is the same, but it actually means something this way.

A fun fact about the design change from the original Xenomorph, that’s not an inverted knee but an ankle. In this newer design the Xenomorph walks in a digitigrade manner basically just walking on its toes like a dog or cat rather than plantigrade, flat footed, like a human. Wonderful change as it just wouldn’t look as awesomely terrifying if they stuck with plantigrade.

Incorrect It's tail is sensitive. If you touch it, it will kill you.
Also, Crafting Items are NOT random in locations. They are however, based on a Random Loot Table.
After 823 hours in this game and many streams of it, I can confirm both of these.
The "Eyes in the back of it's head" is arguable, because you can sneak passed it when it walks passed you, however, distance between the player and and the Xeno, and also based on Difficulty.
If you play this game, play it on Hard or Nightmare. Otherwise you won't have respect for the xeno, as on lower difficulties it can "miss" you when you're within Line of Sight and not kill you when it normally should.

I just got around to this title several years after, but from what I have seen so far of the character development and story this experience is up there with the quality of the original movies, Alien and Aliens. The Crew Expendable and Last Survivor DLCs are incredible snippets as well, played those first. Surviving through the shuttle escape scene in the original movie is authentic, adrenaline-pumping, and can play out differently each time. I recall my first run through it played out like a movie sequence, alarms blaring, sprinting down the last hall to the ladder with the xeno on my tail, turning around a couple times to keep it at bay with the flamethrower. Epic stuff, well done everyone at Creative Assembly.

    Developers: "The xenomorph doesn't 'cheat'."
Same developers: "We programmed the xenomorph to have eyes in the back of its head."
So...it does cheat, we're just not calling it that? Seems to me that sneaking behind something while its back is turned is a legitimate strategy that didn't need to be removed with some AI tweaks.

    • @hivezphone
      @hivezphone 4 года назад +2

Some animals have close to 360 degrees field of view, so having eyes in the back isn't cheating by itself. Developers created your primary opponent in the game as quite dynamic and adaptive creature, don't take that from them. Of course it has its flaws, but people who create something new deserve praise for what they did right, not for what they failed to achieve.

There is so much I loved about this game, and why I constantly hold it in my top games of all time, and my top three horror games with the likes of the first two headspace games, and eternal darkness. I loved how they recommend from the get go you play on hard, the constant music, and feel of pure dread. For bonus surprise fact, they originally were gonna make this a third person survival, but felt like the player wouldn't feel hunted, but more watching the character, so that's why they went first person, and if you wanted to look around the corner, it wasn't just move a camera angle, you literally had to move the character. This game took me legit six months to beat, cause I had to implement a 3 death limit, and I got to that limit really quick many times by the hands of the xenomorph. Calling this game a masterpiece is a massive understatement, and I hope that company felt really damnn proud of themselves and this awesome love letter they made to one of my favorite horror movies, and two of my favorite and inspirational artists, Giger and Mobieus.
