The frame time graph was basically a rollercoster and you guys were still pretty impressed even with all the setbacks made. now a year later and we're running games like this at a much smoother 120 fps and its amazing how well devs are starting to optimize for 120fps on console. Doom Eternal runs a locked 120hz at resolutions *above* 1440p on PS5 and Series X. It's no slouch with the visuals either, I would argue it is visually more complex than any Borderlands game. And yes, Doom Eternal is an outlier. But my point is that that level of performance is *already* available, and that it's therefore possible for other games to achieve the same results.

Love you guys and all you do! Could you please consider direct comparisons between the standard versions and the more expensive “next gen” versions? Maybe even a long form vid including several titles now that we’re seeing more and more titles requiring and extra 10 bucks and often for just one version of the game? Comparisons including load times, resolution, performance, etc when both versions are installed on our fancy new SSDs? Tiny Tina is one of a growing number of games asking us to pay more while getting less details (or more vague ones) as to what we’re getting for our money. With others giving us the “optimized” version for free, it’s frustrating not knowing if the only thing we’re actually paying for is that precious “optimized for” version of the game tile/icon. Thanks. And thank you so much for continuing to speak my language when it comes to gaming.
It's weird they just said in the coming month. I still think there is a hardware issue and it is going to be limited compared to Xbox. The Sony TV VRR is not very good compared to LG for a start.

they easily could too but nah... That's also pretty much why black ops 3 is high on my list of fun PC games not the game itself it has built in splitscreen on PC... like tf?
This was an eye opener in terms of graphical power for the 3 consoles. I had a series S up until November of last year until I decided to trade it in for a series X. I thought I was absolutely fine gaming on it but this really highlighted the differences. And I was fine but I just loved my series S so much and wanted a console with a disc drive that I said why not... Anyways, great review.

On the PC it's a stutter nightmare in the open world with RTX 3080 i9 10850K 32gb 3200mhz RAM- tried everything including full reinstall of windows and swapping out hardware. Devs need to optimise better!
Some people reported a lot of stutter on Borderlands 3, never had much of an issue myself. Try to limit the frame rate in Nvidia control panel "starting" low to say 60 fps if you are on 1440P. A drop from say 130fps to 90 fps in a demanding scene can be jarring in many games, its better to restrict the highs even if you have a variable refresh display.
Still feeling that lack of 1440p support on PS5. Would be nice to be able to play at 1440p instead of 4K on resolution mode and get an even smoother 60fps lock. I tried the 1080p mode out but apparently I've been spoiled by 1440p because I couldn't handle it and switched back to 4K right quick.

All I know is that on Series X in Resolution Mode, playing as a Spellshot, the frame rate was absolute ass in certain areas. One example off the top of my head was Mount Craw. In an intense firefight against elemental goblins with wyverns flying overhead, flinging spells and firing elemental weapons, the frame rate would regularly drop sub-30. It was painful enough that I swapped over to Performance mode, but on a 4K TV that mode looks like someone smeared everything with a thin layer of Vaseline. I digress. Between the performance issues, the short length of the campaign, and the lackluster end game that feels dated (yet another horde mode design, yaaaaaaaaaay /s), this really should have been a budget title, not a $60-$70 one.
I had an issue with Guardians of the Galaxy on Series X where the frame rate dropped really bad. Easily below 30fps. However it turned out to be an issue with the game being in Quick Resume. As when I quit the game and restarted it the game ran solid in the exact same sections of the game.
You should never buy these games on launch. I bought BL3 like 3 or 4 months ago and got it for about 40 to 60 dollars with every single DLC included and a bunch of fixes and upgrades over 2 years. Absolutely worth every penny and I would have not have enjoyed it as much if I payed more for less of an experience at launch. I'll probably be playing this in a year or so and will be rewarded massively for waiting. Games like these depend on having a robust endgame and they never have that quite worked out at launch.

This thing struggles to hit 1080p on a lot of games, how is it supposed to fair in 3 or 4 years from now?
I think if the developers wanted to enable 120fps on Xbox series s, they'd have to drop the resolution to 720p, judging from how much the resolution drastically decreases from 4k to 1080p on Xbox series X/ps5 in 120fps mode, which is not worth it.
This would hopfully ( I know it wont ) shut the mouths of all the console war juveniles. Both the PS5 and XSX are extremely capable and nearly identical in performance. One is not better than the other. They both do a few things slightly better than the other but really balance out on the bottom line. The developer optimization seems to be the difference. Different games run better on XSX and some run better on PS5. Its not rocket science 🤷♂️
It's up to the developer to tweak the TAAU to their liking, they must have decided to change the default values and aimed for a clearer but more aliased image.
In engine there's TAA x 4, 8, 16, 32 and post color sampling with kernal softening, but I'd imagine consoles use 4x with sharpening filter which makes it look more aliased especially stretched on big TVs
@@TRONiX404 it’s not a console thing. Most UE4 titles have very effective TAA coverage on consoles. My guess is that Gearbox’s custom UE4 engine just isn’t very efficient - so they need to claw back some performance with lower quality TAA.

DF needs to stop lying about frames. That vast majority of people have fixed-HZ displays. You act like most people will ever see anything other than 60-30-20-15-10-5-3-2-1-0 OR 120-60-40-30-20-15-10-5-3-2-1-0. Sometimes with 60fps games you will act like the ps5 or SX dropping to a slightly lower frame is oh so terrible even though the experience of either is 40 or 30 for everyone. This way of affectively lying, especially if it ends up benefiting one platform over the other, is not something you can easily explain away as an accident, because you guys cannot be THAT inconsistently incompetent. And yes, 120 to 60 feels better, in some purely comparative sense, than 60 to 30, but being at either higher-end and dropping frequently will feel bad no matter what.

I bought this for ps5 and am somewhat disappointed with the game on a technical level. For charging $70, there's NO 3D AUDIO and NO Dual Sense support and the graphics are not really improved over Borderlands 3. It's also a spin off reusing lots of assets from B3. Should've at least had 3d audio and haptics though. I'm kinda pissed about that.
first few minutes are a complete waste of time, it's only purpose is to pass the 10 minute mark I assume, if not, then I have no idea what that waste of time was. Has literally nothing to do with the video title.
In the post game Chaos Chamber, the performance UTTERLY TANKS, even in the performance mode you see dips to sub-30. I have no idea why, it's a little arena without all that much going on but its performance just collapses. This being on XSX.
The Series S was heavily advertised as a next-gen 1440p 30fps machine with RT, and already so early in the generation it's already struggling. That really worries me, I can't imagine what it's going to look like 3-4 years from now
Yeah it's very worrying I brought a series s before I got my PS5, because stock was an issue. But then a week later I got my PS5 and gave back my series S 😂, while I like the S it's obviously running out of steam quite early.
Firstly this is running at a dynamic 1440p at 60fps. Secondly Microsoft always said it would support UP TO 1440p, not a locked 1440p. If you locked it to 30fps, it could absolutely hold 1440p in this game but 60 is preferable.
What are you talking about? It runs this game at 1080p-1440p & 60fps. Go try to get that performance on a PC for only $299. It is running this game exactly as it should. FSR will be implemented by the time actual next gen games start coming out. Oh, and no it was not advertised as a 1440p, 30fps machine with RT. It was advertised as a 1080p-1440p machine only. Nothing was said about frame rate and it is running games at 1080p-1440p, just as advertised.
Series S is the budget upgrade path for previous owners of vanillla Xbox One/S, and a budget mainstream Game Pass vessel. To hit the $299 MSRP, it was stripped of important GPU and memory specs -- raw compute units, bandwidth, VRAM quantity, etc. Thankfully they had no real choice but to leave the CPU largely intact - and in that area, it destroys the last-gen Jaguar cores, plus the SSD with hardware-accelerated decompression. The superior CPU opens opportunities for 60fps (and rarely 120fps) modes, the SSD+IO provides quick data transfer, but the weaker GPU/memory architecture certainly handicaps the best-case resolutions and visual presets on Series S. It's pretty decent kit for $299, though. Arguably better than any PC you could assemble for the price, and better than what $299 could buy an existing low end PC owners in terms of upgrades.
Ya know.. I'm still curious why in so many reviews of this game I haven't seen anyone compare or discuss how this is so much like the old Bunkers and badasses dlc from BL2. Although a Dynamic Res would be a great option to be added in PC also.
DF should start including quick resume load times. It’s be interesting to see how much time that saves over loading the game from a new boot to vs quick resume.
Big surprise, Series S gets shafted again. I wish I could get a Series X and sell my S, I’m really not happy with all the compromises I’m seeing in every single game. If it was just a lower resolution as it was advertised I’d be perfectly happy, but there’s always very noticeable graphics and performance problems on almost every release.
Not sure what you were expecting from a $299 budget console. It is running this game at 1080p 60fps, which is absolutely fine for a $299 budget console. You can now pick up a Series X much easier. I get emails from Microsoft all the time. Check the Microsoft Store online.

No. Resolution targets will decrease across the board as other graphical settings and new feature sets gets pushed further.

Is it that bad?
I haven't baught it yet...
Could try setting in game to 120fps then use nvidia Adaptive half fps sync, works with some games.
It's just not optimized given how it looks.
Try with in-game V-Sync or Nvidia Control Panel V-Sync or FPS limiter and see if that helps.

There are some. I just seen some yesterday
I will take the STABLE 60 - EVERY TIME.

It’s a weird one. UE4 has excellent TAAU yet both BL3 and TT are made with UE4 and exhibit plenty of aliasing. Strange. And annoying.
It literally comes with Temporal upsampling out of the box, no idea what happened there
It's up to the developer to tweak the TAAU to their liking, they must have decided to change the default values and aimed for a clearer but more aliased image.

What has to have gone wrong in your life that you describe an occasional drop from 60fps to 56fps as "jarring"?
He described dropping to 59 as that which is absurd

No worries. Just start saving, sell or trade in the Xbox S and upgrade later down the line. It's what I plan on doing maybe next year.

@@ElShmiablo Exactly. Especially when Techland finally added 60FPS to Dying Light 2 a month later.
@@ElShmiablo There is extra stuff like VRS that can be used to improve performance. but is not being used my most games atm.
@@ElShmiablo bro what , the ps4 pro only got like 0.2 higher in teraflop count and thts it, series S is better in every other way, but I don’t have a lot of knowledge on series S, this is just what I know , plus series S is more advanced with the newer gpu architecture and better cpu
@@ElShmiablo 🤦♂️
Does anyone know what the fps is on ps4?
Another solid win for XBOX💚
Not really but OK
corny asf
I'd hate if the series s was a powerful as the x. Why have a "premium" console then. The S is exactly where it should be.
In case you haven't noticed your damn doofus the Xbox Series S fully supports 60fps and 120fps This is simply extremely freaking lazy from gearbox not adding a performance mode which is a damn disgrace because borderlands 1/2/3 Tiny Tina's assault on Dragon keep a one shot adventure They all run at 60 FPS on the Series S there is no excuse for this game not to support 60 FPS And I will simply not support the game until they add a performance mode for the series S 🤦
Borderlands is one of the few unreal engine games in this modern era that still perform poorly on everything.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Borderlands 3 runs great on ps5 fyi
@@vincevirtua.... Don't
@@joeykeilholz925 I plat that game and had a good time with it!
ps5 VRR was pushed a while back. Add it in your description.
$70 for the Current Gen version is a pass for me (and should be for Series S owners). I'll wait until it drops in price or comes out on Gamepass/PSNow.
Wym should be for the series S? It’s running 1440p 60fps. That’s perfectly fine
$70 and a 120hz VRR TV to play this rubbish
Holy hell that is a lot. I only paid £31 for my pc version. I guess you can sell the game after you have finished it to make a decent chunk of the money back.
Gamefly ftw
@@theoldpcgamer77 the cheapest version you can find costs 45€ for pc and 59€ for ps5 and cbox x.
Will you do a gameplay and review of MLB The Show 22 on Series X?
I would be really interested to see the last Gen performance as well
Didn't even clock it supported 120fps no wonder my ps5 was screaming at me with coil whine on performance mode
some poor soul paid $60 for their series s copy. f gearbox
You mean $70? Because that's what they're charging for the S/X version.
It runs well on series s tho.
Anyone who chose the $299 budget console isn't expecting it to perform like the $500 premium options, Einstein. I know this may come as a shock to you but the majority of gamers aren't coming to Digital Foundry. They are just playing their games and enjoying them. In fact, you didn't hear a single complaint about this prior to Digital Foundry doing this video. As without Digital Foundry telling you the differences, you wouldn't even notice otherwise.
@@nonyabusiness6084 " As without Digital Foundry telling you the differences, you wouldn't even notice otherwise."
Resolution is easy to notice.
Can you do next time a quick i fo how much is the performance drop if you go up with the FoV Slider.
