    The life of an Amazon delivery driver is actually much harder that this film portrays, I completed two months delivering up to 230 parcels a day and it was more like a recurring nightmare, ten hour shifts that actually lasted 12 hours, renting vans each day that were in disrepair and dangerous to drive, unrealistic deadlines, constant pressure, hard work rewarded with more hard work. My health was the first thing to go as there is little time to even eat food, tickets from traffic wardens which meant that you could work a whole day and make less than you started with, managers that didn't care about you in the slightest, depots sending you out with the wrong packages meaning that you would have to return to the depot making your day last thirteen hours, no time for family or being with your loved ones. My advise is NEVER EVER consider becoming an Amazon driver!

      I had a similar experience as a vending machine operator.
      I got paid for 6 hours salary but had to work at least 10-12 per day because my route was the entire of the county and I didn’t get paid travel time.
      I had 10 mins to restock but so often they were unclean or blocked and so I had to take it apart and clean it which took 40-60mins.
      I had about 30-40 machines
      As in your experience the vans were in disrepair and the boxes of chocolates and crisps and cans were crashing all around the back because they weren’t properly shelved out.
      It was awful and I lasted just a month.

    RE Kermode's criticism, this film was not meant to entertain nor to be a perfect drama-documentary...it is so raw. This piece, 'a year in the life of..' concentrated into 2 hours, is meant to shock us all into realising the devastating effects of austerity on ordinary people's lives. Thousands (ca 130,000) of people have died because of Tory austerity, and bring the level of this awfulness home, it is a deeply uncomfortable film to watch, heartbreaking. I wanted to leave the cinema, had to push myself to stay. These are the human emotions that we should be feeling to bring it home to us what is happening in our society. We should be outraged.

    You’ll never get a genuine review of Loach’s work on this show because of BBC impartiality rules, even if Kermode’a personal politics aren’t a million miles away, which I suspect they aren’t. I remember the I, Daniel Blake review being similarly hands-off, as well as the Arrival review being very, very delicately framed relative to world events that week.
    All you need to know is that this might as well be a documentary and if you’re reading this from the UK then you have the chance to change what it shows on you on December 12th.

    Having never seen the daniel blaike film, I had no clue what I was in for. One of us absolutely hated this movie but I really liked it, for the gritty authenticity. There are characters we can identify with and they feel very real. I'm not sure about the ending because whether we are watching or reading Art, we need rewards for the risks and battering we endure along with the characters. Without much in the way of tangible rewards, this film comes off as a 4 out of 5 rather than a full fledged 5 Star masterpiece. More careful guidance with this thing towards the latter stages could've easily set up a fantastic climax whereby each character finally realizes their plight and makes wise decisions to spend more time together as a family, and get OUT of situations they cannot control.

    • @DipsyMum29
      @DipsyMum29 3 года назад +5

      I disagree about the end.
      They are in a poverty trap so they can’t spend more time together as a family without losing their home and by extension their children’s future.
      They can’t control it so therefore they can’t get out of it.
      This is the underbelly of capitalism.
      The right choices and everything will turn out fine are sometimes not a option for people on the knife edge. Without this dire realisation the film would not be as memorable as it was.
      So many people live this type of life every day so the fact that it ended the way that it did was fitting.
      This productions charm is that it is based on the real life life plight of the working poor and not a choreographed movie script where everything concludes in a satisfying way.
      It shows that in many ways the working poor are worse off than the ones on welfare (at least in the uk).

    This review really mirrored my thoughts on the film. It's an important story to tell but Loach did over-engineer it, I think, making it not quite as hard hitting dramatically as he's capable of. Also, I know that he likes using non-professional actors for added realism but some of the performances did seem a bit wooden rather than naturalistic - the son, in particular, and, at times, the evil boss. On the other hand, I'm a sucker for lovely old dears and I just wanted to give Abby's 'clients' a big hug :-)

    • @psifla99
      @psifla99 4 года назад +7

      mch mch There’s more to Maloney than we give him credit for. He’s not an ‘evil’ boss, more an inflexible boss sticking to ‘ways’ that have served successful bosses well. That is to say, create a siege mentality with everyone in the right place doing the right things, never show an inch of weakness in your environment otherwise it will weaken the image of authority, and don’t oblige to any worker’s specific needs at the expense of other workers. Because if those other workers see that this worker has gotten his or her way they will demand similar treatment. Maloney is therefore not a caricature but a tragic reflection of a culture, the succeed-at-all-costs-and-never-mind-anything-or-anyone-else mentality. The film argues that he ought to be more open minded but instead all he can do is focus on how, using whatever workers he has available, attain his next target.

      The fact that Ken Louch doesn't use professional actors adds to the surrealism of his work..
      Personally, I think the lead actor did a phenomenal job.. The daughter also did an excellent job as well.

    This film was hilariously unconvincing. The use of non actors who couldn't deliver their dialogue gave it an amateur feel. It is a typical Loach essay. It's grim up north all over again. And Loach throws in all the cliches he can think of. Again.

      Nonsense. It’s a fantastic film & the actors were all absolutely brilliant.

    Millionaire takes time out from defending Ken Livingstone to make another dull film about the nobility of the mythical White Working Class?
