In Ashton, Greater Manchester, we look into the lives of the real Daniel Blakes and those who, as in Loach’s film, have began to fight back.

Those ladies standing outside the Job Center are champions.
Solidarity is the key - good on 'em!
respect to those lady's thank you tony
Sanctioning benefit money should be illegal. Not only is it an attack on a persons human rights, it's extremely cruel and causes untold suffering. Write to your MP, get sanctioning stopped.
It is actually illegal and contrary to the Human Rights Act because it undermines someone's "Right To Life"
It's also aparrently against the Bill of Rights
It’s cruel and unfair on those that need the basics to get by
This is sooo sick. This man worked from when he was young..he deserves help now and support. Thanks to the people in front of the job centre ! They are doing a great job !
people need to see this film
I utterly agree. It should be a mandatory watch for anyone even marginally ignorant of the British welfare state.
MsJojo600 Just seeing the teasers has filled me with rage. Seeing it Wednesday night and cannot wait.
I agree. It is really difficult to find a cinema showing it. Yet it is a BBC film. It needs to an early evening slot on TV soon.
John Mulligan yes it was a very hard watch. But a modern day masterpiece. Cried at the food bank scene.
I got to meet Ken Loach a week ago today at a local socialist workers meeting. Such a nice guy. Got to have a brief chat with him and thank him for the film, letting him know my childhood was very similar to the circumstances in the film.
I'm from Montréal, Québec (Canada) and the thing that really upsets me: how come the Royals are worth more than 500 millions $ and they let their people starve and live miserable lives??? Worst: how come a lot of British respect and adore the Royals?
Étoile Filante I'm no supporter of the Monarchy & We need a referendum on them .But if we did ..Chances are people would support them , because people are stupid. The biggest concern in the U.K. is the poor people supporting right wing parties .. Conservatives & U.K.I.P. This contagion is from the U.S. .
I know I'm too late but I have to say it isn't the royals fault the people starve. It's the governments
@@purpledragons1146 but what stop the Royals to share their wealth? Tje governments??
@@etoilefilante4529 The royal family have actually donated to many charities. At one point Queen Elizabeth raised 2 billion a year. By using that logic is it every wealthy person's fault people starve because they don't share their wealth.
So true
This actually made me cry watching this. I really felt for Melvin worked all his life & now when he needs help his being shafted by the system. What a sad world we live in. I really hope things work out for Melvin. God bless him
I know that music on the phone all too well...
This thing is real. When I found out England will be stuck with Boris for 4 more years of this horror I just couldn't stop thinking of this scene at the foodbank......from "I, Daniel Blakes"
This makes me so angry. Austerity is a cancer on our society.
Callum Quinn Its not austerity its killing and making poor people suffer it makes them happy sadistic scum. ps i have worked all my life from 8 years old (paper round) and thank god i still do but i know lots of my freinds whi have paid into the system to be treated like scum when they are jobless and freinds who are disabled feel like there a birden on society all the while the over privilige scum and there working class wannabe middle class toads tell them that they are trying to make it eadier for them pure Evil.
@@peaceLove1988 Socialism/Welfare for the rich and corporations, late stage capitalism and austerity for the peasants. Also known as corporatism. We must end it now. Get out and vote tomorrow! Anyone but the Tories and lib dems. They both work together to screw the worker in favour of the oligarchs 👍
My 60 year old aunt who has worked her entire life recently lost her son to suicide.
She didn't want to work anymore as she was only a few short years from retirement but the job centre forced her back into the workplace.
That's why the system is screwed. People who have worked their entire lives are not taken care of when they need it.
Been in this situation. Not nice and very hard to get out of.
Very interesting film. A must see for all politicians that create this inequality.
I hate this pompous mentality that we are all just numbers. You basically have to sign on now with a continuous stench of pessimism lurking under your nose.
I've been there after 3 heart attacks the consult saying l will be lucky to see 65 and cancer I was kicked out of work at 57 worked heavy engineering and the job centre treated me like a scrounger and said I was still fit and well enough to be able to get a job and treated me like scum
This should always accompany the film for anyone who doubts its reality.
Winner of a BAFTA for outstanding British film. So when will the BBC show it? After all they paid for it
I watched it for the first time yesterday and it does hit home and is true to lif infortuntatly i guessed the ending but we are more than a national insurancr number.
Good grief GB get it together.
Everybody detests dole scroungers and people who milk/bilk social services but there's got to be a better system put into place to assist those who REALLY need it.
Forcing older adults with little or NO computer skills to do things like filing for benefits and filling out forms on-line is almost a %100 guarantee that the Govt. can impose a sanction and reduce payments.
We are living in a time in which those in power convey, by their actions, the simple message that "I've got mine, you don't, I don't give a damn, F you."
Arrive late for your office job, nothing said. Arrive late for your 'clock in' job, lose 15 mins pay. Arrive late at the job centre (for whatever reason), lose 3 months money.
They passed my brother fit and he died 2 months after
so sorry for your loss
Sorry to hear about your brother. They did the same to a neighbour of mine and he died shortly after being told he was fit for work after a heart attack.
I wanna know who the 6 people are that gave this the thumbs down??!
Disgusting how could anyone give this a thumbs down five million thumbs up
The system is shit. But... do you not all think if we were closer as families we would all be better off? I live in China... salaries are low and food and rent isn't cheap. But the family unit over here is so tight. No family will see another family member hungry. Grandparents live with their children and get looked after or more importantly.. loved. But what do we do with our Mums and Dads? Old people's homes. Or a little granny flat.. pay em a visit every month just to make ourselves feel better. Something needs to be done about the benefits system but we should also look at ourselves and ask when is the last time I called my brother? Or is my Aunty doing alright she's a bit quiet nowadays? Get the family back together and save yourself the excuse of well life is just too busy. Until we sort our shit government out I think this is something we have the power to do ourselves.. right now.
Completely agree, the system rolled out by the government should be there only for when we fail.
Unfortunately the rise of neoliberalism and Margaret Thatcher saw an end to that. Let family's buy their own council houses becoming slaves to debt. Brutally eradicating outdated industries with no contingency. All of this created an unprecedented wave of poverty, crime, drug abuse. Vicious circles that tore families apart. Your ideals are virtuous and sound. But there are reasons outside of societies control that have contributed to the breakdown of what you rightfully state is important. I'm not saying it's impossible, I lived in Nepal and witnessed the same culture regarding family in a world of poverty, but the economy and political agenda of a state has significant differences globally, and unfortunately Britain has been put in a divisive state where what you say would solve things isn't easily achievable and will take a lot of undoing to achieve. I think the argument that perhaps are society has crossed the precipice is sadly a valid one.
Some bad spelling/grammar mistakes in there, but I'm sure you'll understand where I'm coming from.
Isaac Filmmaker You're a fool if you blame peoples lack of compassion on margaret thatcher.
Scuba Sausage and you obviously didn't understand anything I said contextually, because I've not for one moment talked about 'lack of compassion'. So I completely reject your assumption of me.
Does anyone know what has happened to him ever since? Please respond.
It is BY DESIGN

Their is lives at risk come on may fix this
Lalalala lalala lala... Spring time, hahaha!
exact same music from centrelink in australia
Some people in some area who never reflect on their conduct in human histories,
Some people who loved Thatcher, neoliberalism and 5 eyes, deserve it in some ways.
I do not like 'The guardian', but I feel and know these peoples anguish.
so sad this reality... :-(
What about me, I’m a Daniel Blake
MY EXPERIENCE IS DIFFERENT . THE BENEFITS SYSTEM HAS SHOWN MORE UNDERSTANDING THAN THE MEDICAL PROFESSION .RUSHED INTO HOSPITAL WITH SUSPECTED
HEART ATTACK BPM 140 . GP WONT SIGN FIT NOTE AS THEY ARE UNDER " STRICT ORDERS " . IN THE PAST I GOT CERTIFICATES FOR A HEAVY COLD , NOW WHEN I NEED

Six years later, and everything's so much worse.

Four Seasons ~ Vivaldi
This is as real in the "streets paved with gold" US also - they will roll all over you like a steam roller and not think twice while doing it!!
IF THE TORIES SERVE ANOTHER TERM
WE WILL ALL DIE
EVEN THOSE WORKING FULL TIME WHEN WORKERS ARE THREATEN WITH THE SACK FOR NOT SLAVING FOR THEIR BOSSES ENOUGH BECAUSE BOSSES CAN CHOOSE
STRESS CAUSES HEART ATTACKS/STROKES AND ARE SERIOUSLY ON THE INCREASE IN THE UK
TIME TO TAKE BACK CONTROL OR SEE FAMILY MEMBERS DECREASE
THIS IS NOT A SCARE TACTIC BUT A FACT
This is all American style, cut throat capitalism brought in by Thatcher in the flash 1980s.
This is the only film to have made me cry in a cinema, I never cry around people. Its also the only film that made me cry that involved humans & not animals or animators characters, the dark stuff animated stories, like Plague Dogs, not Disney.
😮😮😮😮 How do these people get into positions of power . Lost for word's at their ignorance Kwasi is a leading example. 😮😮😮😮
Vivaldi is waterboarding the poor and disabled.
@Steven Universe I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing. That makes this even worse. They are disrespecting him and all of us at the same time smh
social cleansing :(
Legalizing pot is the only answer to sort this cruel, heartless, vegtablistic country out....

Emlish go to work and stop complaining, rest of EU they don t complain!!
I truly do want to like this film, but knowing Ken Loach is worth roughly $5 million makes it a bit difficult.
Hardly relevant is it ?
@Ben James and@@brianclarke61993
It is not that Ken Loach is a shieister because he is rich. He too has probably worked hard all his life in his chosen field. He is rich because the entertainment industy is demand-valuable, meaning his customers and employers (ie viewers and film companies) will pay soooo much more for HIS skills and product than Melvin making factory widgets. Loach has done an enormous public service to bring this issue to the screen and (I believe) spent his own money on the film. The sad thing is it will be watched and talked about for a few months and then forgotten. That is to the public's and the politician's eternal shame.
I'm a Data Architect with decade of work experience. One day when my contract was up, I thought I should take a break for a while. EI Benefit started as early as in a week after I applied. I collected EI for a year and had a wonderful long break. I live in Toronto, Canada. No complaints from me as far as how social benefit system works here. UK is done and obsolete. The future is US and Canada
