- It's an issue that's proving potentially as divisive as Brexit... superhero films.
They may have dominated the box office over the last 10 years but award winning directors are now lining up to criticise them.
Martin Scorsese calls them "theme parks", Francis Ford Coppola says they're "despicable" and now Ken Loach has told Sky News they're "boring" and "cynical".
He was speaking to Sky's entertainment correspondent Lucy Cotter.

The boring thing about superhero films is that it's the exact same storyline every time. There's an overpowered superhero, who has some sort of weakness, which the villain tries to use to their advantage but fail in the end. Are we all supposed to act surprised when the protagonist overcomes all to win? I don't want to know the ending before I've even started the film.
The only superhero films that I think are worth watching is Unbreakable and The Dark Knight trilogy.
@@myBquest I like that they went for a different angle but in the end the same old clichés were used. I feel like they could done a much better job.
I mean logan, man of steel, birdman, joker, x men days of future past, watchmen etc. I think they are worth watching as well. Not your typical villains finding a superheroes weakness and exploiting it. Watchmen is literally one of the best comic book movies ever made where there is no villain.
@@darkbrandon8431 birdman is not a superhero movie
They hate him because he's right
I don't hate him. But I still enjoy Superhero movies
If he actually read the comics..
it’s one thing to say they’re not good movies or that they’re not cinema. but to say that they’re boring as just absolute stupidity. thats literally the one thing people go see these movies for is the action.
but mostly because he's left
@@heh9719 but sometimes movie different from it's source "comic" so he has his point thoo
He's absolutely correct about his assessment of this fad. I just don't understand how can anybody get excited about the green screen/CGI cringefest year after year.
Because people have different tastes in movies. There is legit nothing wrong with these movies. And don't all most every movie uses Green screen and CGI? So how is it bad when Superhero/comic book movies do it
@@KingJmizZle They are shallow and unoriginal, which is why move makers love them. They're easy to make and thick people like them.
@JAS0N_XZ I mean marvel movies are bland and boring but fox and dc movies and other superhero movies and shows are really good.
Imagine that, human perception and opinion is varied. What an absurd notion.
People don’t want to go to the cinema to be presented with a bleak version of their own reality. Some people do, but most do not. The majority of movie goers are looking for escapism.
yes, superhero movies are commodities. Especially now that the DISNEY PLUS streaming marvel shows...are LIVING ADVERTISEMENTS for upcoming Marvel movies.
I saw Cathy come home in the 60's and I've never
forgotten it, it had such an impact.
Martin is right . The superhero stuff is getting old now . Nothing new, no character progression, no advance story telling , just flat characters
Daniel Blake broke me. 😢
the ending caught me off guard
Never seen it looks a depressing??? Film 🎥
Super hero movies are boring, because giving them super hero powers eliminates their ability to compete with the rest of us.
And the fight scenes just go on and on
Ken Loach is the real hero
Asking Ken Loach (whose work and calibre consist of realist and socialist sensibilities. Marginal budgets. Anti-Hollywood in style) about his opinion on superhero films, let alone blockbuster films; is simply a ridiculous question one could ask of Loach! Some film "journalists" really are abysmal.
Exactly! And she was so insistent, the only objective there was a good headline. And she made it, and we all get caught.
I'm glad she asked it though. I've hated these films for yrs, now that the greats such as Loach, Scorsese and Coppola condemn them I feel better
Clickbait...imagine interviewing one of the most accomplished directors of our times/have him talk about his new film for 2 minutes but decide to title the video after an answer he gives on a series of movies with such marketing budgets that they don't need further free publicity. I like Marvel movies and obviously, it is fair for the journalist to ask that question but titling the video after that response rather than what he came here for, the promotion of his film? Sad...
It's not even that, the title is simply false. Ken said he finds them boring, not that they ARE boring. There's a world of difference between the two.
@@deplaneetegmont They are boring.
KES brilliant movie
Totally agreed
I'm totally with him that they are boring. They're as shallow as our culture, and easy to churn out.
He's not wrong. Superhero cinema are soulless corporate fodder although some titles have its convictions (BLACK PANTHER, which is pretty woke/left wing for its confinements, WATCHMEN) and the more comedic, satirical ones (THE MASK, SUPER)
well Watchmen is very deliberately an anti-super hero comic book, and its creator Alan Moore has said similar things about the modern Marvel movies
Very well said Ken
He's right
Nobody should be surprised when old school directors express Disdain for Superhero movies.
Adults in general. It's clingy that super hero films are as popular as they are with ppl over 20 now.
Nobody should be surprised when true film artists express disdain for superhero movies. It's got nothing to do with age. It's a question of taste.
@@peterpeters1662 and maturity. people are escaping from real life and their real feeling by watching those superficial movie with calculated formula
My fav director
I’ll keep saying it 150 grand a year with Tenure as a minimum and we won’t have these issues!
I would argue that genre cinema, especially fantasy, horror and science fiction can often expose the realities of real life more effectively than dramas through powerful metaphors and beautiful symbolism. The best horror films and sci fi movies are very political. That said, I agree about the MCU. They are corporate trash.
NPE 94 I mean, aren’t all films (especially universe bases) corporate trash? Film Is a business..
The Motion of Pictures not everything
PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS (horror) + SHAPE OF WATER (fantasy) + ELYSIUM or any Neill Blomkamp film (sci-fi) passes this test?
William Blake 🌹
Funny to think that Joker has more in common with Ken Loach's films than Comic Book ones. The highest grossing R rated film ever, and it portrays a vulnerable man let down by the system and an uncaring, money driven society in itself. Obviously his response to this is wrong, but we see how he got there.
The fact it's reaching such synchronicity with millions of people should be heartening. Joker doesn't have these issues as wallpaper to action sequences, the film is a tough slog, and on what we see the character go through, so that people are going back for multiple viewings means something special in the era of Comic Book Spectacles dominating screens.
Yes because joker is mostly a copy paste of legendary movies like taxi driver, king of comedy, cuckoos nest
Exactly. The Joker shows us the very “internal” world Loach is talking about here.
Joker is just a blockbuster disguised as an art film. The reason it earned so much money is the same reason the superhero movies earn so much money, it has a beloved pop culture character in the title.
i really like joker but it doesn't typically suit the american audience. that sympathy has gone.
@@keninjc89 it sort of is a pastiche but i did like it
They really are boring to watch
Agree there boring.
Big up à la classe d'anglais
He said he FINDS them boring, not that they are boring.
Economics 101: the law of supply and demand. The public demands superhero films and Hollywood supplies them as long as they are blockbusters at the box office. It's all about the money.
That's just not true. If that's what the people want, then why the need to advertise? Why spend billions of dollars or pounds or whatever, to 'sell' something to us which we want anyway? The demand IS supplied. It's a closed loop.
I'm surprised Sky News interviewed him despite their right-wing rubbish.
Extremely. The originality in screenwriting has all but died.
The working class people (me included) he highlights in his films are the very people who go to the cinema to watch those popcorn superhero movies for a heavy dose of escapism. It isn't cynical, its about having a good time with your family and/or friends for a couple of hours.
Is your first name Owen and your second Jones
@@jsmesoercy6436 Oh I'm not a labour supporter, I'm actually a Libertarian.
Precisely. Well said. I just want to switch off for 2hours.
Agreed. Filmmakers like Ken Loach making interminable movies about the supposed plight of the working class is precisely the reason why British cinema is so incredibly dull, unvaried, miserable and practically non-existent.
To hard for your puny mind to watch a real movie?
I find a lot of MCU films boring myself, but I also found Logan brilliant. A lot of people rate Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy quite highly too. Like it or not all these films are cinema, and many people seem to get a lot out of MCU films on an emotional level which they might not do with Loach's films.

superheroe films are indeed boring !!!!
People who like superhero movie brain have been raped by dog Lamo ;)
Agreed (only exception is Nolan’s trilogy)
@@keninjc89 and The Original Spider Man trilogy also with Tobey Maguire. Those movies are still way better than any of Tom Holland's movies 👍👍
Superhero movies are for the people who have no clue what real cinema is it's a quick fix just like online games etc
Not all superheroes but those mcu movies.
@@darkbrandon8431 correct
At least games have always been an entertainment form. Cinema has been an art form since the beginning and now it has become a theme park
A Few Real Directors Make real Movies for few of Us That all , like Frederic Nietzsche once said Only sick music(Movies) makes money today.
An important film. ❤️
With Fantasy comes preference, preference flourishes under variety which is the SPICE of life.
Ken Loach and 'Super Vanman'.......
Bonjour
Yes they Boring but they dont care its makes the rich billions that's the truth $$$$$£€
Its all about not offending china and islam.
Bad guys are always White people or monsters from Pluto.
James Parker heroes are usually white as well
Superhero movies are predictable, it's always the happy ending; there is no twist just plain same old formula 😐
Yet he expects people to spend money to watch his work. If cinema was dependent on his films it would be dead.

Free advertising air time...or maybe this news media company also owns the movie production studio who produced this guy's movie that no one wants to buy tickets to see? They really pull your strings with this..."we're all smarter than the mob...go see my movie" form of info-advertisement?
They are only tiresome because superman is boring

Anyone above 18 should be banned from going to the cinema hall to watch superheroes movies.
Not banned, but definitely laughed at lol
Superhero movies are super boring.

And in related news, the ghost of Beethoven has just released a statement calling Kendrick Lamar’s music “boring”
They are getting boring but the new joker film was outstanding!
John Doe it was based on the comic book the killing joke which was released in 1988.
@@Kris_1708 It has literally nothing to do with The Killing Joke
Ken has some interesting things to say about Film here, But Sky try and make this clip in to Ken slagging off a particular genre. poor journalism, but no surprise.
When is he going to focus on the middle class and how unwanted their interfering in the lives of the working class are. Utter slime.
Bit rich from Ken saying super hero films are boring. His portfolio is so dull.
But he is making films about reality for many people. Marvelfilms are fantasy and give people a break from reality. Both genres are ok but a real message comes with Loaches films.
@@patcampton9799 I don't think Ken's films are truly reflective. I think he reduces real life to base principles and over simplifies.
@@solidoperative He does a lot of research and uses real.life stories within his films. Plenty of People had Daniel Blake type problems with the DWP. I think they are pretty authentic.
@@patcampton9799 He portrays exceptional real life tragedy as common place, for me there is something dishonest about that.
Oh god how many crap movies have I watched in 50 years ......?????
How much have I enjoyed the last ten years of marvel ..... I’m in fricking exctasy...never enjoyed films so much seeing childhood come to life on full screen
Blake died bitter in penury
THANOS is coming
This guy just sounds jealous because nobody is watching his movies anymore or giving him money to do so
Comes off really petty 😒
As someone who has seen several of Ken Loach's films, he's in dangerous waters calling any other films boring.
Fine artists think comic book art is no good.
Fact is. If these people were making anything better. Nobody would go to see them.
Star wars got universally slammed by critics. Never has a movie been more universally loved.
No snobbery like the creative click.
They don't have to be the only movies studios put out.
What is boring is that super hero movies seem to be the only choice we have at the moment.
I get bored of eating cake. Does not mean I have to critique every baker.
If these directors are currently making movies more appealing than marvel movies. I accept what they have to say.
If they are currently not doing anything of interest. Sorry but it's just sour grapes.
This interview is boring. Cinema is all of what he is said but the superheroes movies also reflect that too, when money is discussed art does not stop. He is insulting everyone that works so hard to create the imagery of these movies, he just doesn't understand them so chooses to blind himself like Coppola and Scorsese.
What is there to understand?
He is an amazing filmaker and the nuances in his films sadly bypass the minds of those that have been indoctrinated to not think for themselves
@@trexH66 if his films are so good, why isn't he on top of the box office
Because the general public is dumb
I'm no fan of superhero movies, but with one or two exceptions Loach's films are painful.
..umm on Marvel >> GoTG and Ragnarok were good tho...
Ken Loach is boring
Ken makes some pretty spot on points about society and government here, but sure; let's all talk about superhero stuff.
