- Director Ken Loach and screenwriter Paul Laverty have already won the Palme d'Or in Cannes twice: for their Irish war film The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) and for their social drama I, Daniel Blake (2016). Their new collaboration Sorry We Missed You, an impressive indictment of the 'gig economy' that is making it impossible for care givers and delivery workers to make a living, is again a strong contender for the main prize in Cannes.

Paul Laverty nails it down so nicely.. Excellent interview.. No words for the film .. possibly one of the best again from Ken Loach.. This man is a legend. .
A brilliant film - as with Loache's work generally, it was a bit clumsy, but so raw, so rightfully angry, so real, it demands to be seen

Gordon Ferrar i just hope you are not pointing fingers at your fellow humans. Nobody is able to make a change. You cannot overthrow the system. People can protest as much as they like (thinking about Yellow Vests now) and nothing will ever change.
Really looking forwards to seeing this, as a service tech working out in the field, all day from house to house through congested cities against the clock....I can totally relate to the pressures the film seems to base itself on. I think this will show that today's lifestyle of " I want you / it here now " does have consequences and massive pressures for some.

We need more people to speak up against greedy corporations like this. Even in a "socialist" like Denmark, we're seeing the gig economy grow from nothing to currently employing thousands of workers all over the country. Luckily people are starting to wake up, and competing companies are taking more responsibility. That's the good thing of maintaining a certain level of competition - companies do actually want to do better, as long as there's room to compete.

The care industry needs a good overhaul - live-in carers are expected to work 14 - 16 hours a day (and often have their sleep interrupted too) and some agencies pay as little as £65 a day - before tax. Many jobs stretch on for weeks with only a 2 hour break a day IF you are lucky. Domicilary care is even worse - it would be so much better if everyone just cut the agencies out as they are taking the lions share of the money for doing absolutely nothing, and that is driving up the cost of care, but the carer is not getting a fair share.
@Robert Pembroke these people? You mean people like me, intelligent and educated but wanting to give back to society? People like me who give up precious time with our own families to sit and watch a family of strangers open their christmas presents, whilst hardly looking their vulnerable parents in the eye because it is obvious they only reason they are visiting is to get their hands on a cheque or two. These people who do the caring so many can't be bothered with? The ones who comb hair, brush teeth, make nutritious meals rather than them living on cereal and toast? The ones who hold their hands while they cry because they haven't seen their kids or grandkids in weeks or months? The ones who reassure them about being safe and looked after when they feel they have nothing to live for and yet are afraid of dying? The ones who keep track of their doctors appointments and make sure they get to them and that all relevant information is stored, shared and acted up on appropriately? The ones who gently undress the elderly and infirm, help them into the shower or bath, change their pads, wipe their bottoms and make sure they are clean rather than left sitting in their own muck for hours or days? Are these the people you are talking about?
The ones who live on less than minimum wage, who frequently get bullied and abused by people who either have all their marbles and are just nasty human beings or are so far gone with dementia they do not know what they are doing and saying.
I hope you are saving for your old age.
@Robert Pembroke sad that you are so cynical, life must be hard through your eyes. I would never go on benefits - I was not brought up that way, no member of my family has ever done so, we have all worked from a young age to support ourselves and our families - you obviously have a different mindset, take what you can get. My family are all independent and do not need taking care of, so why should I even think of not supporting myself and taking a handout instead? I can miss my family without having to take care of them, but I guess for someone who believes in taking handouts, critical thinking is not a strong point.

It's simple, never be an owner driver, it's a waste of time, tried it once and was just barely covering costs like petrol etc. If you decide to do courier work then only do it for companies that provide reasonable conditions, provide the vehicle, petrol, and pay by the hour.
A movie that rubs not only salt into the wounds of the working class poor, but urine (see the movie).
This is the 21st century and the wealth gap between the rich and the poor is increasing.
It's really wrong, but I don't see many of our politicians dealing with this issue.

@@nickmageebrown1981 Actually, recently it was discovered that Alcoholism is mainly a rich-people's problem, whereas everyone thought it was a lower-class thing.
But rich folk have so much spare time, that they start drinking earlier and they don't have to drive themselves or keep up a clean act for work or other places, like the foodbank, so they can do whatever they want.
And that, according to this study, results often in alcoholism and rich people drinking the time away.
Only we must demand political change as Paul said in this film; I only wish I had the eloquence of Paul Laverty to fight in that corner. But with or without it will not stop me from trying.
Ocelot, I do the same thing with regards to Amazon, I will pay twice the bloody price, if required from Waterstones, or any other retailer. I am so lucky, I can afford it. I do some volunteer work, and the guy I see, has no other choice.

The Conservatives have managed to make sure that this film was swept under the carpet. This film is another groundbreaking j'accuse film done by the great Ken Loach. I watched Riff Raff the other day, nothing has changed in Tory Britain since that movie was made almost thirty years ago and nothing ever changes. When it comes to the Working Class there is only one thing you can be sure happens in Tory Britain, inexistant employment rights, a race to the bottom between workers in wages, misery, unfairness and injustice.
I often get ads from Amazon and Aliexpress and so on. I never purchase anything there.
I just don't want to support it and I know that as soon as I 'do it once' I'll probably keep buying there.
It's mainly shit, you don't get what you ordered, it's cheap and has toxics that are illegal in Europe, it's stuff I should not buy.
If you want cheap, nice stuff that you play with once and then chuck away again, go to the thriftshop and re-donate after. You can get a lot more quality there.

I buy from Amazon because they are cheap, and I don't have money to throw away at more expensive alternatives..
I purchase at the Thriftshop because items that they display are actually really...what they are, not a fake picture.
Also, they are proper quality (some have already been through a lifetime of usage and are still perfectly usable) and most of it is cheap.
I'm ashamed ...that the Anglican Church, church of England, has recently invested in Amazon! Shame on them!
To be fair on the immigrant point. I worked as a self-employed driver for Fed Ex for 6 years. It's a job immigrants coming to the UK can do, and there's a lot of them working as drivers. They also are very hard workers willing to work for less than I was. I had my consignment rate cut three times until it became unviable for me to do the job. I had an immigrant sniffing around my route for about a year because I was one of the top performers at the depot. A chart was put up on the wall showing how many deliveries were successful on each route. He smelled money. With someone willing to do your route for cheaper the bosses become really nasty to you, trying to push you out. In the end I punched the operations manager a few times and left. Went back to college, got a degree and now doing a masters. Anything to get out of doing that job. But don't paint immigrants as some kind of good guys, they're as ruthless as anybody.

Love Ken Loach films but he is not telling us/showing us anything new. "There is a great economic injustice...you don't say?!" Poor are screwed, everyone wants to screw them...even film makers. Loach, Scorsese and Copola telling us superhero movies are "despicable & not cinema" Of course they are cinema. They are the escapism that so many people need from the reality they live...the reality Loach profits form by making films about them!
