    My dad scared me and our waitress once, we were having lunch together at a restaurant because we were bored, hungry, and had money to spend, we had a lovely lunch, and our waitress was so nice and polite... so imagine my surprise when my dad asked to see her manager. She looked so scared as she left and I was stunned silent, when she returned with her manager in tow my dad spoke up and said "Sir, I just wanted to say that your employee here was a wonderful server, she was polite and she made sure we had refills and that our food was to our liking, I also think that she deserves either a raise or a promotion of some kind for her exceptional service." The sweet woman looked liked she was going to cry and the manager looked relieved and proud. He left a large tip and when we left he told me "That's the only reason you should call the manager over to your table." I still think about that all the time.

    • @hodgeelmwood8677
      @hodgeelmwood8677 2 года назад +73

      They're not even repeating it correctly. The actual phrase was, "In matters of taste, the customer is always right." The idea was that if the customers wants to buy, for example, plaid pants to go with a polka dot jacket, let them! Make the sale! It was never meant to excuse nasty behavior or demands for free things and so on.

    • @spiffymouse3848
      @spiffymouse3848 2 года назад +6

      @@hodgeelmwood8677 Where did you hear this? From my research, the phrase is reported to have been from the early 1900s and has the meaning most assume today. She was stuck waiting on a group of entitled men discussing who had the biggest yacht, and making ridiculous substitution requests and then sending multiple dishes back to the kitchen, all while being incredibly rude and demeaning to my friend. The Chef, (the best boss I ever had) loved his employees and I’ll never forget how it looked when he burst through the kitchen doors, walked right up to their table and the whole restaurant heard him say “I have good news and I have bad news. One of us will get out and join them, just standing in the way. Once, we actually met this one woman who was doing it to two spaces using a shopping car. My husband told me to find a new spot and he stood next to her right up until the movie we were going to see was about to start jut to annoy her and the driver. When they got mad at us and yelled how he was a ah for it since he didn't have a car to park, he just yelled back "Neither did you and you still parked your fat ass on two.".

One day a guest got frustrated with one of our new hires because she didn’t understand what the lady wanted to order. Our new hire was a foreigner but her language skills were fine. So I went to help before it escalated. Once everything was done the guest commented “you shouldn’t hire people who can’t speak the language”. My answer “Language wasn’t the issue here mam. We just don’t train our new hires to know the products of our competitors.” (She had been ordering Burger King products instead of Mcdonalds products. This happens often and we don’t make an issue of it unless a guest demands that certain product) Her face was priceless.

The two cops that went out to listen to them tried to reason for a bit till they gave up and laughed in their faces and went back inside telling them if they follow they'll be arrested next. There is a state that is trying to pass a CAREN law against this behaviour with each of those capital letters standing for something l(ike an acronym). R may be racist and E may be entitled, I'm not sure if the law went anywhere or if just a small county managed to try this.

    Story time about a Karen: So I used to be a manager at a dental office and one lady was desperate to be seen RIGHT before lunch (mind you the dentist, assistants, and hygienists all go to lunch at the same time 11-12) so I squeezed her in and the dentist agreed to take a shorter lunch to help her. I told the lady she NEEDED to be there at 11 the latest because she needed to fill out the new patient paperwork, get X-rays taken, etc. The lady agreed and said it would be no problem. She showed up at 11:45 because she was on the phone in her car instead of coming inside to start the paperwork. The dentist got annoyed and went to lunch. When she finally came in and I told her that he went to lunch she threw a HUGE fit and started yelling at me. I explained that he waited a long time and we knew she was in her car on the phone the whole time and she couldn’t deny it. I told her the dentist needed his lunch. She grabbed paperwork from the counter ripped it up and threw it at me. Then asked to speak to the manager. Which I politely smiled at her and said “oh ma’am I am the manager” which made her even madder lol she asked for the owner’s information and as I was getting it for her she walked out and said she was going to call my manager (but she just ended up calling one of our other locations 😂)

    I bartended yrs ago in a 5 star hotel lounge, & everyday we opened at noon - not 11:55 or 11:57, but NOON. The head bartender warned me to NEVER serve anything until the bar clock said noon bc then it would become a thing. So, one day I had just finished putting all the liquor bottles on display on mirrored shelves, & was preparing to open, & right away, a Kevin ticked me off by getting my attention to 1st ask if this was the bar. I look behind me at about 100 bottles of liquor, & asked what did he think? He became annoyed, as I was, too, bc it was 11:50. He then demanded a Johnny Walker Red on the rocks, to which I said no bc we weren't open yet. So, he points to the bottle on the shelf & tells me it'd take just 2 secs for me to do my job & grab that bottle, a glass, & some ice. So, I continued my task, & counted to 2 out loud. He asked if I was being funny, & I said yes bc those 2 secs would be followed by 9 more mins of me ignoring him. He immediately asked for my Mgr, so I called to him as he was in the storage room behind the bar counting inventory. He came out, & stared at the man, saying nothing, & I knew why. The man said he'd asked for a drink & that I'd refused. My boss turned to me & said, "PIs explain that I cannot hear him & will not respond until noon." He then stared at this man as the mins passed while I continued preparing to open the bar. Every time the rude man spoke, my boss would make a loud sound & point to the clock. He was a big guy, so the rude man had no choice but to wait. Then, at noon, he dramatically changed & kindly said, "Hello, what would you like?" Instead of asking for his drink, he decided instead to complain loudly about how horrible we were, & the customer was always right, & how I should be fired, & how he'd never stay in the hotel again, & it wouldn't have killed me to make his drink. My boss then asked if he'd already been drinking, to which the man said clearly not, which is why he was asking for one. My boss then said he couldn't tell if he was already drunk, & it was against hotel policy to serve overly intoxicated ppl. The man started cussing, demanding to speak to the hotel Mgr, blah blah blah. I was then told not to serve this man bc he was being belligerent. The Food & Bev Mgr was at the entrance to the restaurant, & came over bc he recognized the man. Apparently, he'd showed up at the restaurant the night before, & seated himself before the restaurant or kitchen was opened, & had demanded service. I hadn't worked the night before & didn't hear about this, but the head bartender had. Apparently, we were his newest victims for his demands for service. At this point, I knew my boss was mad bc he put out our 'special' snack mix reserved exclusively for very rude ppl, which had a healthy dash of cayenne pepper. The man grabbed a handful as he stood there yelling. He clearly became thirsty, & demanded water. The F & B director said to give him a water to go, & charge 10 cents for the cup. I put the water on the bar & said that'll be 10 cents, which made this man lose his mind! My regulars had started to show up, & a few had been there the night before. The man threw the cup of water, & proceeded to walk towards the entrance to leave. Unbeknownst to me, the restaurant staff had heard about this going on, & the kitchen staff, who xane out of nowhere from the restaurant. Spontaneously, everyone started clapping, whooping & hollering, & laughing right along w/my regular customers at the man proceeding to leave! It was a beautiful moment for all, esp those working in the restaurant bc this man had complained about everything - the food, service, & his bill, which he'd demanded be reduced bc of his complaints. We never saw him again, & never heard one peep about it from upper mgt.
    The moral of this story is to never give an inch bc some ppl will demand a yard, & we don't get paid enough to tolerate bs! You never, every bite the hand that feeds you or prepares your drinks! We WILL have the last laugh! And, for the record, I cannot count how many ppl would literally walk up, grab a stool, & ask if that was the bar! I don't know why either bc it couldn't be more obvious! Had that man simply waited until we were open, he'd have had his drink. But, bc he was an impatient prick, he left w/a hot mouth & raucous laughter! Karma is real

I told my manager that if she doesn’t kick her out I’m quitting on the spot & filing a report. the lady literally harassed me & reached over the register for my vest???? manag. finally told the lady she has to leave. cant believe how I was the only one advocating for myself in an unsafe situation at 16 yrs old. At the time (and I'm pretty sure this is still the case), all our call centers were based in the US, and there was a certain demographic that would actually THANK US for being "American" if we didn't have a discernable accent, and would immediately escalate on anyone who did have an accent (and there were ALWAYS notes when this happened, so we knew what people were about). My favorite thing was one of the supervisors, who was an incredible, brilliant woman, was originally from India. So if you got one of these Karens, and they wanted to speak to a manager, and they were escalated to a woman with a moderate Indian accent, it was like their head exploded. It was/is a sad commentary that people would try to use perceived "otherness" as a weapon against that person, so it felt like a nice retribution when it could be used in reverse.

    My aunt is a Karen. Going anywhere with her is a recipe for embarrassment because she literally invents reasons to make workers cry. I particularly remember a time we went to Olive Garden once. She berated the waitress for the fact that the macaroni that was served to my baby cousin (he was like two or three at the time) had a single piece of rigatoni in it (this was after she had demanded he be given plain buttered macaroni to eat, which wasn't on the menu). She made the waitress cry, and only after that demanded to speak to the manager, whom she demanded free dessert from. Oh, but just for her. And after she said unprompted that no one else was getting dessert because she wasn't paying for it. So we had to sit with our meals done and watch her eat chocolate cake, me and my sister just stunned and frankly having anxiety attacks as quietly as possible, to avoid further yelling.

    I gotta say, seeing managers that actually have their employees' backs and put entitled customers in their place is a breath of fresh air.

    Acme needs to create portable trapdoors. When a Karen attacks, you can whip out your Acme Portable Trapdoor, toss it under their feet & watch then slide off into some other dimension.

      But then there would be no more Karens to entertain the masses with their ridiculousness. 😂

    "I think a lot of Karens hang out at dollar stores"
    Me, a woman named Karen, having just shopped at the Dollar Tree: I... I have no explanation for this. We just do these things. At the very least, I'm not one of the mean ones, lol. I always say please and thank you at the drive-thru, in the Dollar Tree, anywhere I go. Thanks to fellow nice Karens who try to help mitigate the problems with these crazy same-named witches.

      So cool that you keep it humorous, Eventhough, you unfortunately have the same name. There's freak out Karen's, then there's real Karen's that become freak out Karen's because they pissed their name is now slandered, then there are innocent good hearted Karen's. 😆

      @@makaylabyron972 Yeah, employees are like oh your name is Karen should I go get the manager now and save you the trouble? And you know I can't help but think yeah, if you can't have a civilized interaction with me, maybe that's a good idea!
