This excites me more than it should
Gorgeous!
Thanks for such a great channel!
Guitar Media has now subscribed to you on youtube!
Cranmer guitars thanks you on RUclips
Thank you for sharing 😊
Beautiful color! Do you always need to use a filler? I know you said you weren't crazy about the one you were using so what type is recommended? What brand of stain did you use? Only one coat? Also did you use any different colors around the edges or just a thicker coating of the same stain. Thank you
thanks!
Beautiful finish. Just wondering, did you rub true oil on the flame top of the guitar after you'd done the other finishes? Also, why rub down the guitar with 1200 grit and not say 2000 grit? Looks amazing as is but as im new to this and deciding what finish to use and how to do it any help would be fantastic.... thanks.
Beautiful Guitar!!!
That looks gorgeous! What dye did you use?
You hit on a key point that almost every other video leaves out .... using a light coat of shellac on the edges where the dye meets the body in order to prevent runs in that later finishing stages. A great tip!
From a painter with decades of experience blue tape is the absolutely wrong tape to be using! Try the 3M 2040 tape. The higher the numbers the less tack it has.
hi cranmer, this turned out absolutely beautiful. can you disclose what exact dye you were using here? thanks, j.
This looks fantastic!
What was the epoxy that you used for the grain filling?
Its called 'Z-poxy PT-40' I'm not so keen on it, but a lot of people love it 🤷
What size cove bit (assuming you used a cove bit) for the dish outs for the controls? Or did you carve those by hand too? Thanks.
Sorry for the late reply, I ground a curve into a spade bit and drilled out the holes on the drill press. I wasn't too impressed with the results, so I'd probably use a cove bit next time
Sir what is the name of the brand name color that you put in the body of the guitar
Hi there at Cranmer guitars. Beautiful red stain you used for that particular guitar. May I ask which red from which brand you used for it? Thank you very much and best regards, Michael
What’s the name of the stain brand you used for the red bro ?
Would wipe on poly work the same way as shellac to protect the edges from runs?
What kind of paint did you use bro
Can you use that clear coating over a regular painted surface? I’m curious because it would seam much much easier to do a wipe on clear that by spraying.
no. the solvants are diffrent.
What stain are you using?
Great looking job, not super glossy,...just enough...
What kind of stain you use? Can you provide link to the product
Do you have to fill the grain? I’m gonna build another guitar soon, and I’d like to have open grain because I like the feel of it instead of a hard lacquer. Does it depend on the wood type?
no, you dont "have" to do anythine. if its your build,,,and you like it,,,do"try" it. its not 59 les paul....its yours, make it yours.
Thanks for video :)
Thanks for stopping by! :)
how long did that take?
Did you put truOil over shellac?
what varnish did you use?
Epoxy resin right?
Is it necessary to put shellac on the top before using Tru oil? Or can you you just use Tru oil over the stain?
I used gold acrylic paint on my strat and have put tru oil on top of that and it is coming out really good.
I'm not sure I understood : shellac then tru-oil ? Then sanding, and last but not least scratch remover??
Yep, you got it. Shellac as a base coat, tru oil top coat and t-cut and super nico as a buffing compound
@@CranmerGuitars could you apply the Tru Oil directly to the stained top of the guitar after it dries without any shellac? or would it make the dye run or move around? I thought Tru Oil worked by penetrating the wood? Will it adhere to the shellac long term? I'm building a guitar and want to water base stain the top, but was unsure if I had to apply some type of coat or sanding sealer prior to the tru oil
@@acellett I have the same doubt.
how durable are tru oil or shellac finishes?
tru oil is made for gun stock finish so it's designed to last a very long time
Do I hear a deviated septum? A good pal of mine had his fixed, 1 day hospital stay, now he sounds like James Earl Jones.
Its a very serious, untreatable condition. It's called 'being Scottish'
@@CranmerGuitars then I guess the Dewars ain't working? Good luck, and great channel.
what kink of shellac do you use?
It's dewaxed astra shellac (from German supplier Dictum)
Hey, that's a beautiful red! Could you let me know what brand/colour it was? I couldn't make it out in your video.
Also do you gig it and how has the oil finish lasted for you?
Color tone stew Mac
always strange to me that you SEAL IT ALL OFF and THEN STAIN IT. what would happen if the reverse was done??
He sealed the mahogany back, not the maple top.
He stained the maple top, not the mahogany back.
What color do you use?top GuITaR

Guitars are meant to ring or at least resonate. This epoxy finish kills it all and looks very pretty but very China made.
Realistically that makes no noticeable difference in the sound of an electric guitar. Besides, China makes some pretty good guitars now a-days.
What stain are you using?
