I love the way a quilted, flamed, and tigers eye tops look. I picked up a bunch of veneers and have been experimenting with different figured woods. I made a few pen holders using solid figured woods. I have been using Keda wood stains with an epoxy resin clear. I can't get use to the true oil finishes. I'm looking for a nice deep finish with a high gloss. Controlling the thickness of the epoxy is giving me a nice clear coat. I have learned a lot from your videos and just wanted to day thanks. Once I get more tools, I'll be working with caps instead of veneers.
The thing with curly maple is... It darkens with age. Turns golden, amber. Its always a good idea to go a shade lighter than you think. All finishes will add their own amber. Your end finish is almost identical to what I would do building a figured maple reproduction furniture piece. There's even recipes online for creating relic type "antique maple" finishes. That top came out amazing !
Beautiful, Derek, you really did do that top justice. In 1978/79 I purchased a brand new IC-400, that was one of the guitars I really do regret letting it go.
Thanks, I watch all the videos to learn how to approach each project! I learned a lot and now im using all your techniques. (i have some nice pictures for you). This one is my all-time favorite. Greetings from Holland
One of your best in recent times, the colour and figure in the wood match perfectly 😀! I honestly can’t see the splotchiness, the finish turned out great.
Love it. Obviously the video isn't what it looks like in person, but I would think the angeles tan would work great considering it tends to be a brighter orange. With brown I bet it would be awesome.
Watching you finish this guitar body was gripping. I wanted to scream at times and yet had to watch to the end thinking how frustrated I would be , freaking at undesired results but you pulled it off very beautifully. Considering the time and cost of materials for the entire completed build I don't think I could deal with someone trying to dicker on price.
That's a great job Derek, thanks for sharing! I thought that the sending sealer wouldn't have been a good option before the oil finish, because I expected the oil not to be soaked into the wood as it should have been on untreated wood, but it seems it's not the case. So I will try as well.
Wait? This is another video. I haven't looked at your channel for at least a year. I have to say your still doing the exact same thing and your video is also scary similar in quality. Keep it up BigD
This is very cool. I just fell into your rabbit hole. I get a hold of a cheap guitar that has a spalt-maple top. I am fantasizing about dyeing it partially turquoise and leave some sections natural, sort of along the black lines. I will probably have to use an eyedropper or a small brush to do this, to not get out of bounds. Would you suggest to do the black dye first, like you did here with the flame?
Wow your skills have developed to master grade. No more dye slop dripping everywhere. Two questions, have you ever experimented with pre stain wood conditioner? As a truOil enthusiast, I’ve recently discovered Odes Oil with color pigments has you experimented with this oil/wax product?
A trick i learned is when dying maple, you need to "condition" the wood with water if youre using dyes. Its helped reduce the blotching when i refinished gunstocks. Maple is a dense wood and having quilted maple like that wont help. Using warm water as a first coat pops the grain and lets the dyes penetrate better. Another solution is too look at how you mix your dyes. I used Keda dyes and mixing them with alcohol produced the most blotching.
hello and congratulations for your tutorials, I'm following your process to repaint my guitar and I would like to know if I don't spray the sanding sealant and directly pass the tru oil on the paint if it's a mistake, I would like to get a matte finish! thanks if you answer me
Just want to say that I’m a fan of your tutorials and watch your videos all the time. Recently moved out in the country with no cell service or wifi so I don’t get to watch as often unless I go out. I was wondering how to contact you by messenger or an email. My name is Ray and thanks for all the great videos
I can't get ahold of Angelus leather dye in New Zealand, but can get their suede dye.. Will this work in a similar way or any other recommendations on alternatives?
I did not like the color at all and really liked the orange, until you hit it with sanding sealer, then it really changed dramatically. Nice job on this, looks spectacular, like that wood should.
I love this, I have some Angelou's leather dye and am looking to finish with a polyurethane clear coat, do I need to use sanding sealer before applying the poly?
Hey man, about to stain my first guitar. Along the sides of the body you have taped it up with something. What is it? 😂 anything in particular that I should know about before I hit it with the dye? I’m looking for a similar effect to a prs guitar, with the colour on top, and then a nice crisp edge between it and the wood. Many thanks 🙏🏽
Im having such a hard time. I haven't even put any stain down. I can't get the sanding to come out without leaving swurks and little marks. I'm at a total loss
AWESOME content! do you find that you have issues with lightfastness and the Angelus dyes? I've been doing a lot of research on this - I want to do a mandolin in an ocean fade - but have seen a lot of content that suggests these dyes fade really quickly. thoughts? thanks again for your fantastic videos!!!
Hey Big D, I'm making a guitar and I used Angelus ox blood leather dye and I want to bind it. How do I apply the binding with acetone without it bleeding all over the place considering acetone is an enemy of this dye. Please help
Is This oil-finish as durable and protective as a lacquer-finish? Seriously thinking about this on my next build but I can’t imagine it as being as hard as a sprayed finish
What brand of stains are you using? It looks easier than most videos I’ve seen where they seem to have to use more of the product to get the same coverage as you get with one dip….
A light coat of sanding sealer before staining reduces splotches makes the job easier .Thinning the stain also helps .color has nothing to do with splotches
Hey Derek, amateur here, is there any specific clear coat one should use with these leather dyes or could any clear coat work? If going for a high gloss look specifically.
I enjoyed your video and just wanted to mention an old technique for staining maple evenly, it's called glue sizing. Basically you make a watery slurry of plain wood glue and water, apply it with a brush and let fully dry, then sand with very fine sand paper and then you're ready to stain. I hope this helps
Big D, for a beginner using Angelus leather dye for 1st time (on a PRS type flamed top (thin veneer)) what do you recommend? I want to get the multi pack and do a nice blue, green, or purple fade. What colors other then the mains usually help (i.e. clear, or yellow etc..) with getting a good fade? Edit: kind of like your blue ocean fade.
I could not get that nice shine, not even after applying 5 coats of tung oil. Not sure what I did wrong, but the surface still remained matte, no shine at all. Is it because I didn't use sanding sealer maybe?

Let the record show that I voted for Tiger’s Eye! Came out awesome! 👍🏻😱🤩🐅🎸

ohhhh....my favourite shape, and that top...amazing, man, great upload!
Beautiful, Derek, you really did do that top justice.

WOW! The trueoil finish is outstanding. You convinced me to use that on my next build. Thank you!
Very nice! Good to see you back, Derek.
That's a beautiful top, Derek... fantastic finish, as well.
beautiful Piece! Great Job!
Thank you very much!

thats a nice top, why would you risk getting stain on it....the north face ones
Quilted tiger's eye done right is amazing!
Gorgeous guitar, man! Love that "hey I'm filming!" part. We've all been there. :D
Like the Iceman, the top is beautiful - Thanks for the video Derek - Cheers from Canada
That is absolutely Awesome .. That Top really Pops 😃🎸!!
Outstanding!
Cheers from Kerrville, Texas!
🤟😸🤟
Oh man, that came out really good. Nice work.
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks fantastic!!! 👍👍👍

Thank you! Cheers!
Looks amazing!
when the light hit it at certain angles, that thing looked great.
Looks more like the first Offspring album cover...super awesome
What no Tele... I nearly fell off my chair. Looks great.
Wait? This is another video. I haven't looked at your channel for at least a year. I have to say your still doing the exact same thing and your video is also scary similar in quality. Keep it up BigD
warm the can of spray sealer in hot water BEFORE spraying it to avoid spitting and bubbles. Beautiful guitar!
Beautiful

Hi Derek, great work as usual!
Would you be able to do a “steve morse” burst (purple or blue) and or a trans black burst like mayones does
Wow your skills have developed to master grade. No more dye slop dripping everywhere.

No.
if you wanted to have a small amount of black burst would you just do the first sanding less on the edges? would that make it burst a lil?
That would totally work. 😊👍
Man, this would be killer to have to play as well as see it on the wall
Gorgeous top, thank you for sharing

BigD drinking game: take a shot every time he says "splotchy".
Looks fantastic as always.
You're a real Stan for that Makita! Bwahaha.

Wow! That is a beautiful Iceman !! how much did that sell for? Love to find one like that to buy . . . :)
I did not like the color at all and really liked the orange, until you hit it with sanding sealer, then it really changed dramatically. Nice job on this, looks spectacular, like that wood should.
Beautiful.
Wow! Challenging body but you made it work with first class results.
Too good for Paul Stanley came out beautiful
haha

BEAUtiful Guitar mate!!!!!!
How much for one of those bodies? Could you make one with a modern strat neck pocket?
Im having such a hard time. I haven't even put any stain down. I can't get the sanding to come out without leaving swurks and little marks. I'm at a total loss

In your older videos you use steel wool in the step b4 the 600 grit. Do you feel that that is unnecessary now?
Great job!
I’ve never seen you test a pre stain conditioner before staining as it’s alleged to prevent blochiness.
Derek does sealing the guitar make it easier to build tru-oil coats? I don't think I've ever gotten to that "sheen/shine" with only a handful of coats
Gorgeous

HEY HEY MORA.... IM FILMING !!! lol looks nice. about to try my first burst build
WOW, came out awesome !! :)
What is laquer type in cans? Nitro or Poly?
Is this an alcohol based dye? Would Feibings alcohol based leather dye work the same way?
A light coat of sanding sealer before staining reduces splotches makes the job easier .Thinning the stain also helps .color has nothing to do with splotches
Hey Derek, amateur here, is there any specific clear coat one should use with these leather dyes or could any clear coat work? If going for a high gloss look specifically.
Can those Angelus dyes you use be mixed into lacquer as a toner? Also, are they aniline, does UV exposure cause fading over time?
Might be a dumb question but can you spray the stain
so your first coat of oil you dont wipe off?? You said let it sit for 48 hrs to harden but then said let it sit for 20 mins and wipe it off.
Dayyyuumm that's nice.
can you custom make the body with teak wood?
you should use sanding sealer
I'd have left it at 3:45 and called it a day. Just a gorgeous top.
Hey Derek, beautiful guitar! I have a question for you. Have you ever used boiled linseed oil work over these dyed bodies? Thanks for all you do!
truoil is boiled linseed oil

‘Ey, Derek - which part’a da Midwest d’ya come from? 😂
Who is Lenard?

Edit: kind of like your blue ocean fade.
Get a bunch of primary colors. Don’t get the Wierd colors.
Curious if you’ve ever started black coats w berry purple? Might yield two tone ripple FX?
I have. Purple turns green for some reason
binding or staining First?
I could not get that nice shine, not even after applying 5 coats of tung oil. Not sure what I did wrong, but the surface still remained matte, no shine at all. Is it because I didn't use sanding sealer maybe?
Tru oil has a sheen piece to it. tung oil sometimes doesn't have that.
очень красиво!!!!!!!!!!!
drink every time he says: splatchy...
