This kid is amazing! I have known his Dad since 9th grade. We played guitar with different bands and traded licks for years! Now Marcus kicks both me and his dad's butt on guitar! I heard him sing and was blown away a second time when he was just 17 years old! I am black and have played in many bands and made a living at it and still do as a full time music teacher who plays 8 instruments. Marcus plays and sings with more soul than ANY of the black R&B and blues players that I performed with over the years. So glad to see that he is starting to get the attention that he deserves. He gets better every time I listen. Rock on Marcus!
EricBlackmonGuitar hey man on a side not I enjoy jamming to your tracks you put up! Great stuff. Good to see you on this video and that is high praise. Bless!
I was able to hang out with Marcus and his dad when they played in Kalamazoo a few months back and they're both just super solid dudes on top of being brilliant musicians. His dad definitely helps to make sure he stays humble when it's so easy for kids his age to get a big head. I can't wait for him to come back around in a couple months.
I have been on this earth for 67 and Marcus is truly a phenom....can't wait to see him live. I know Stevie Ray is looking down saying "Damn, that little chubby man can play..."
Crazy...small room with woodwinds brass and drums and everything is clear separated in mix and didn't lose tonal quality. Vocal on dynamic mic sounds like studio recording great reverb and processing I'd say even better than on the studio track.
@@witchsabbath13 Rita is his wife and mother of Dexter's kid. Marcus did say in an interview that "Rita" in the song is from Dexter. She was murdered in the show (sorry, spoilers). But not by Dexter. By another killer.
Saw him open for Chris Stapleton yesterday, he burnt up the stage and the horns are such a great addition to his southern soul. Covered sabbath and we all fell about the place🤯
I've been blessed to see him twice live already. At Crossroads and a month later at a small venue in Ventura CA. Great shows , amazing talent. Great band. Marcus and Billy String. We needed this. I'm 65 and I sure love these guys. Real muscians.
Every musician in this video is incredible. Listened 20+ times and still find it hard to take in all the musical aspects, it’s a shame most don’t see that deep into it in the mainstream market! Amazing stuff.
He has surrounded himself with a super talented group of musicians. The rythym section is killer , both horns are phenomenal and keys perfection. Add Mr King to this mix and it a deadly combonation.
All praise Ethan Glaze and Sean p Jones for the sublime sound engineering! A band is only ever as good as the engineer. He brought this to life! Amazing performance! Such a tight band!
With Marcus King, I can’t choose between voice or guitar ! So soulful ! And surprise, almost jazzy sometimes ! Love this man. Super band too, of course.
That solo is suuuuuuper jazzy. And to think that he literally just improvised that on the spot blows my mind man. Insane talent. I play guitar and learning that solo has been a masterclass for me in terms of how to play a soulful bluesy solo with a lot of jazz elements throughout. He studied jazz guitar for a few years with a teacher and it really shows.
One of those nights were I dive down the YT musical rabbit hole and discover oa. Billy Strings and Marcus King. Live doesn't get any better than this! This is absolute world-class!
Marcus King along with Gary Clark Jr. and Derek Trucks are amazing guitarists representing blues based rock and blowing the roofs off every venue they play. Anybody care to add to this list of truly generational talents??
I am almost 70, and Gregg Allman has always been my guy. God bless him. How lucky I am to find the Marcus King band. I love them all. They would do an amazing cover of Statesboro Blues.
I'm new to the party but while doing a walkthrough for clients in new construction the electricians were jamming to Marcus...I became an instant fan...kid is talented...!!!
Buy their albums and you'll be glad. Catch a live show and you'll be changed. MKB is that rare thing in music when all the stars align and some strange magic happens. Super cool dudes too!
Very much agree!!! Seeing them live is life changing. They brought my love and passion for music back. From the lyrics to every note each instrument sings, has you emotionally invested. They are awesome!
I think when Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, James Brown, Steve Marriott, Duane Allman and B.B. King passed their souls immediately went into this guy... fortunately.
First heard these guys opening for Govt. Mule a few years ago. Glad I showed up early. His voice hit me like a slap in the face. Wow! Big fan ever since.
he opened for Chris Stapleton back in October 2021 and he was amazing. kinda stole the show from Chris. I got tix to his new tour "youngblood" for September.
WOW!!!! F'n A, man! I love you guys! My new favorite band. You bring it all - I hear echoes of Steely Dan, Van Morrison, SRV, and the greatest soul acts of the past, but updated and totally original for the modern age. I know this clip is almost 6 years old, but your life is about to change. Today, you're on the front page of the NY Times, and a million people who didn't know about you yesterday know about you now. Congratulations!
This almost brings tears to my eyes. This is that Blue Eyed Soul that I grew up with in the 70's. Didn't think I'd ever see this kind again. Soul from the heart that he was evidently born with. You don't just learn this. This Dude gets a Ghetto Pass, fa Sho!
been listening to every thing I can find on the net by Marcus King and I can safely say there is not a bad note or negative energy in any of it almost makes me feel like a kid again

Wow...love that southern blues and jazz sound!! He is an old soul and has a hell of a career ahead of him. Just scored tickets for his show at the Filmore Detroit in Oct/22 God Willing!!! Can't Wait!!

I can't get over how good this is, band is immaculate, audio mix is perfect....and that soulful AF singing then BAM that face melting guitar solo was incredible.
Marcus's solos and licks have the most perfect fusion of jazz and blues that I have ever seen. It is completely seamless and jaw dropping. Such an amazing guitarist, and an incredible band in general. I want to see them live SOOOOO badly!!

Who the fuck gives this a thumbs down? This kid and his band give me hope that great music is not about to die off forever.

In a selfish way I want them to continue playing small venues. Stadium shows with them would be a shame.
He has surrounded himself with a super talented group of musicians. The rythym section is killer , both horns are phenomenal and keys perfection. Add Mr King to this mix and it a deadly combonation.
Agreed! The bass man is awesome. Saw them live opening for Tedeschi Trucks Band

The whole package for sure

Dear God. That mans voice is drenched in soul. Wonderful.

As an audio engineer, I agree with this comment
Simple setup but it has a bold and poignant sound
As an audio engineer / producer / composer - I also agree. This is studio quality recording.
This is by far and away the best sounding live version of this song and in my opinion more soulful and better sounding than the album version too!
