    Been working on these cars for a while, and honestly your best bet for that upper front ball joint is to just replace the whole upper control arm assembly as a unit with the new ball joint already pressed in. You can get em pretty cheap online, and you get the bonus of new bushings on the upper arm.

    • @wjye
      @wjye 4 года назад +1

      And don’t forget to grease those new joints!

      @@defconed avoid replacing the lower control arm, that is a much bigger job than the upper control arm. You will have to loosen and slide out the steering gear to remove the massive bolt.

    Highly recommend a Milwaukee impact with proper impact extensions and sockets. Worked great when I did mine. Had to do whole control arm though and it came with upper pre installed

    Just replace the upper control arm, gentlemen. Anytime you replace chassis components, get the front end realigned.

    I did my lower ones this weekend and only have hand tools.. the cheater bar is your friend!! Side note, I did break a harbor freight wrench and a craftsman wrench.. Lowe's gave me a new craftsman, I suspect Harbor Freight will to.

    When you are at the point of having to torch the upper ball joint, just buy a whole new control arm. They are only roughly 30 to 40 dollars and you replace the other 2 bushings.

    2003 grand marquis. Been having a strange noice over bumps or when car seems to twist. Pushed down on drivers side tonight and I can hear a clunk. Unfortunately I can’t push the car up and down while trying to locate the sound. But I do notice the boot on the upper ball joint is torn. Is it likely this is where my noise is coming from? If so, how long do I have to get this knocked out? It’s starting to get cold here and last time I did control arms/ball joints took me awhile. There is also a bit of shimmy in the steering wheel st high way speeds. Not a lot but enough to notice. Thoughts? Thank you.

    • @smoked-outgarage3261
      @smoked-outgarage3261  6 месяцев назад

      The clunking noise could be ball joints, a torn boot could be a sign of a older/worn part. The best way to check ball joints is to jack up that side of the car from the control arm until the wheel is off the ground. Then put a pry bar under the tire and pry up and down. If the ball joints are bad there will be noticeable play and movement. Any vibrations or shimmy in the wheel at highway speeds is most likely from unbalanced tires. Hope this helps 😃

    Nice video. Just did the sway bar linkage(s) on my 2002 Crown Vic this morning. I bought this car knowing the front end was squirelly as hell but... It was a real handful to drive before but did idler arm last week and did the linkage this morning. That took care of about 90% of my problem. I suspect a ball joint is my remaining issue though I have no slop when jacked up and trying to get some play by trying to wobble the tire up and down or side to side. However i can feel a slight shifting going on when when driving at higher speed though it doesn't try to take off going over seems and irregularities in the road anymore. Pittman arm looks good and bushings for sway bar, control arms etc. all look fine so ball joint(s) is all thats left.

    Guessing that is a 2003 and upwards Crown Vic . Ball joint stud facing downwards. I have the 99 Marquis. Ball joint stud facing upwards . Same tool bit no space working from top Too bad they did not include a shorter screw in the kit. Looking between steering knuckle and lower control arm, it appears that ball of stud has worn it's way into the control arm. Has anyone seen that happen. Considered cutting it off between steering knuckle and control arm. Removing part from control arm would be easy.
    Problem is removing stud from steering knuckle. Got lucky on passenger side when ball joint separated in front of my driveway. Only 71000 miles but original ball joint 24 years.

    I had no problem taking out my old one like you did. Not worried about damaging the boot of course and it wasn't stuck. My problem is I've ruined two of them trying to install. The first one was my fault. I didn't leave enough clearance for the stud and as I pressed the joint in. It was closed bottom cup and was just a hair too short. It pushed the stud pushed up through the top like yours did when you tried to remove it around the 6:30 mark. So I learned. I thought. I used a different set up with a larger cup that was definitely up against the bottom of the control arm and with a hole in the bottom so the stud could just freely come down. But the same thing happened. I have no idea and completely puzzled what the stud got hung up on for it to push up through the top again. I know you can't fix my problem. just venting.. grrrrrrr
    I really just did it as a temp fix to pass inspection. the ball joint itself is tight. It's just that it's no longer sealed and will wear out prematurely. Will be doing a complete suspension refresh in another 9k miles anyway.

      I'm going through the same thing right now...the receiving cup in the kit is too shallow to receive the lower ball joint during removal. So, I am about to cut the threaded stem of the ball joint to allow for clearance. I will let ya know how it goes.
