Did lower ball joints, both inner and outer tie rods, and upper control arms today.... it’s a lot easier to watch the videos than do the work! I couldn’t have done it with the confidence I had (which got me through some rough patches) if not for your videos. So, again, a BIG THANK YOU.

8:48 turn the C-clamp upside down to install it easier. Remeber, it's a system with 2 opposing pressure points, so the force upon them is identical no matter which way the C-clamp is pointed. 9:38 the sharp edge of the snapring should be pointed down so if the press fitting looses tension from extreme use, the snap ring will bind in the groove and help prevent separation. 9:44 tap around the snapring with a flat blade punch and a small hammer to make absolutely sure it is fully seated in the groove. Probably best to install the grease zerk last so u don't damage it during CV/knuckle maneuvering.
Simply the best instructional videos... the visibility, the clarity, the pace... everything is simply spot on, no fluff, absolute top of professionalism. Unreal work, thanks Chris
Man I am so glad I found your channel I literally knew nothing about cars or how to fix them but the way you break stuff down it makes it sound simple enough for average people with no proper training to do it themselves and save hundreds if not thousands. I recently just changed a tie rod and ball joint on my 2017 Nissan rogue all from your videos!
Now I am a big fan of your video. 1> you detail all the steps 2> you show where the tool is come from 3> you indicate safty issues 4> you use simply tool. Great show. Thank you
first video of yours I've seen and I am very impressed with not only your knowledge but the perfect clarity that you explain in. Not everyone can do this! I've been to 2 years of Automotive vocational school and was a light wheel mechanic in the Army. I learned a ton of new stuff. Keep em coming bro. Much appreciated.
cassiusclaynyc Thanks a lot man! And thanks for your service! I am glad my videos are clear and helpful, that is a goal of mine! Stay safe and keep learning as much as you can!
Hats off to you ChrisFix!!! I like referring to your videos all the time, You go thru these videos step-by-step for the ordinary people who doesn't have all of the special tools on hand. You are down to earth my man. Thanks again...
riley633 Thanks man! I am glad my videos have been helping! That is the idea, easy to follow, step by step, concise, and educational how to videos using common tools! New automotive 'how to' videos every Thursday and most Mondays!
Thanks for the info in your videos, and for the CONFIDENCE to attempt this job. I did both upper ball joints, sway bar end links and tie rod ends on my '06 Ram 1500. The satisfaction of doing it myself makes the hundreds of dollars I saved worth even more to me.
The amount of time you spend on everything. Including editing blows my mind. Thank you for your videos, you do an excellent job teaching. Not too fast not too slow!
Hello Chris, I'm done. First one took 3 hours, second one was 55 minutes. The solution I used for the stuck tapered ball joint was an old gear puller, penetrating oil, and two 5 second blasts of electronic parts cleaner and lube,(much like Freon, gets real cold). Waited about two minutes and it popped out on its own. Just got it all aligned and tires rotated. Thanks again for the great! video.Your camera work, editing, and syntax really pull it all together, You saved me a boat load of funds. Dave
davebonnie4 Glad the videos were helpful Dave! Thanks for letting me know how it went! See how much faster it is when you do it a second time! Nice work!
Omg I'm so beyond excited to have found this from you! All four upper and lower ball joints are bad in my SUV and I have been told that'll be well over a grand maybe even a couple grand fix. I was looking all over the Internet for info on how to do this at home and came up pretty much empty handed. All your videos are so detailed and easy to follow even for people who have no car knowledge. I feel confident I can order the parts and do this. Thanks so much! Btw I can't believe you haven't found sponsorship. Someone should pick you up soon.
Chris Fix is a great RUclips instructor. His voice is so soothing and makes me feel like I can accomplish any auto repair I need. Plus you never see his face, which gives him a certain allure.
Hey Chris, I really, really appreciate your videos .. I find them to be the best DIY home auto repair videos out there, and you've saved me hundreds of dollars. Very much appreciated.
I appreciate you taking the time to do these videos! Really helps me keep my 99 Suburban maintained and running good and safe for my family! Thank you sir!
Your videos are so useful! Thank you!! Your attention to detail, editing, clear sound and shots are appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to edit these and making them high quality. Bonus points for showing how to do this with hand tools and stuff you can borrow from a parts store.
Chris, I'm loving your videos. Thank you for taking the time to upload them. And of course educating us at the same time. We're all much appreciated by your kindness.
MrGeno1951 Awesome! That is what I like to hear! Glad the video was helpful! Definitely consider subscribing! New automotive 'how to' videos every Thursday and most Mondays!
Your videos and descriptions are EXCELLENT! You explain things in simple terms and show that a person doesn't always need special tools to do the job. And the fact you provide helpful links.
I'm more of a suspension mechanic myself, I can do motor work but diagnose and repair external engine parts. I'm about to save 450 on my Lincoln by pressing them instead of changing out the lower arms. Great video on press procedure man. Thanks.
Wow, very detailed and informative. Erictheguy should be worried. Love that you film every angle/shot and with proper lighting. Do you have someone holding the camera? I don't even hear any traffic - just birds chirping. I hope you're sponsored because you're good at what you do. Keep up the great work!!
Haha, thanks a lot man! I do everything myself. I use a tripod and many times I wish I had a 3rd arm. I edit all of the traffic out and as much of the other noise (birds, planes, buses, etc) out as well. I am currently looking for sponsorships but no luck yet. Thanks for the awesome feedback! I really appreciate it! It makes making these how to videos worth the effort!
Hi ChrisFix, Can't believe you don't have sponsors beating down your door to attach themselves to your top notch you-tubes.. Thank you so much for great gift of free instruction and advice on car repairs, I couldn't do it without you and a couple other of the great generous you-tube mechanics. and the factory service manual. .. I have watched a lot of your auto-repair videos and never seen you do any Hack thing on them, always professional, the best! Whoever you learned from was stellar. Thanks for the inspiration to do it right, too! Nicole
The ball joint press can be used screw side up to press the new ball joints in so you can use an impact drill on it. Great video, I have loved all of your content over the years.
Excellent video!!!! Clear concise, excellent videography and editing along with to the point commentary instructions with no ums and ahhhs and wasted unnecessary silent gaps. Super well rehearsed and scripted. Well done!!!
WV591 I get my torque specs from my service manual. But you can also just google your car year, make and model and what part you are looking for. And finally, your parts store should know the correct specs as well!
rokin89 A lot of times they might be able to pull up the torque specs on the computer. You just need to make sure they put the correct year, make, and model lol
Honestly man, you did just as great of a job on the video as you did on the tutorial. You speak clearly and loud enough, there's no background noise, and it's very thorough. Very nice man, very nice!
You sure do explain things well. There are many people who find it difficult to understand workshop manuals and your videos are very useful. It's a pity in Australia, you can't rent that removing tool for free. :(
As usual, your videos are super easy to follow. I removed my ball joints with a hydrolic press because one was available. Have the ball joint remover tool is just as easy. I would have replaced the upper ball joint too as it's ready to fail. When I replaced my ball joints on my Ford E150, I changed all the tie rods as it was just a matter of time before they failed.
Mark Keeler Thanks man. I did replace the upper ball joint as well. It is one piece so you have to replace the whole control arm: How to Replace a Control Arm (upper or lower)
Chris Fix! Man you just saved us a crap load of headaches! Your indepth videos really helped my son save about $700 from shops. We really appreciate everything you do. Keep up the excellent work!
All of those steps for one ball joint? No wonder why they charge you a lot to repair!I'm glad you showed me cause as much work as it is, it'll save me money.Thank you!
IMO this is an excellent video; informative, perfectly shot and edited. I am not an auto mechanic but this video helped me understand the process. Being informed helps us, the regular citizens, to pay the fair price for this and, in general, just about any other repair (auto, home, personal services, etc.). My auto mechanic is an honest and well trained individual but it never hurts to remind him I already know what he is going to do. Thank you.
+Oscar Gomez You're not an auto mechanic. Exactly. Therefore your opinion of this video is based merely on presentation, not accuracy. Don't try to show up your professional and honest mechanic. He will merely shake his head and laugh at you when you leave. UGH!
... Thanks Chris.. i know i can count on a video from you to refresh my old 73 y.o. mind on car maintenance. ( ... been a while tween ball joint replacement ; )... so Thanks Again & i'll see ya down the road.
I know very little about vehicle repair/maintenance but I somehow ended up here after typing "how do ignition coils work" in the search bar. Awesome, video mate!! Very clear and concise for rookies like me. I just subscribed and will work through your videos in the coming weeks. Cheers for all the work you put into your videos.
+Brian Ramuno, I cannot reply to your comment for some reason but I hope you see this. I dont know what springs you need to compress. You are not taking the control arm off, you are just moving the knuckle out of the way. I will have a new video next Thursday working on another car to show you the similarities and difference in removing the ball joint and pressing in a new one. If you watch the video, that is what you need to do to press out a ball joint.
Thanks for the video Chris. Btw your description says "To watch the longer, in depth version, click the link below." but I think you meant the short, fast version.
Chris... u are the best diy mechanic out there. U make everything so clear and it is just amazing what u have taught me. I wouldn't be able to change a tire if it wasn't for u. Keep up the good work man!
Thank you Chris Fix, your demonstration helped me change my lower ball joint. I'm a diy guy and I've never changed one before and your video saved me a lot of $$$$ 🤣thanks again.
Man you are the DIY guru in car repairs. I feel as though I could rebuild my car with the in depth knowledge and details you put into your videos. Thank You! Keep them coming.
Great job on this Video..getting ready to do my H3 Hummer... garage wants $325...to do this...includes Ball joint and Alignment. But not paying this outrageous price, your vid decided this for me ;) Thanks for this in depth vid my man..you are a God send.
You Sr make look so easy. You give me the confidence that I can do this job on my 95 4runner but then when I look underneat my rig I see it's not easy. One of these days I'll get to it.
cv axle blew out on the cr-v, figured id replace the lower ball joint as well so this video comes in handy bro! thanks for all the great content thru the years
Chris, i'm a tech, and i think that your video is well done. A few tips, if you don't mind~ One, it's easier to handle the brake caliper and it's mount adapter if you take the entire assembly off of the rotor. You can hang it with a bungie cord or some wire, like you did with the axle. Two, put a jack under the lower control arm before disconnecting the knuckle. When the ball joint comes apart from the knuckle, the spring can still have a lot of force and will push the arm down rapidly. I see that your truck has torsion bars, but coil springs can be even more dangerous, since it is contained between the lower control arm and the frame. Three, i would put the grease fitting in last, after assembling everything, that would reduce the chance of breaking it and having to take everything back off to deal with the broken piece that would still be in the ball joint.
The only thing that's changed in the last 6 years is the pace and tone in which ChrisFix talks. The quality is still 10/10, even for the early stuff like this. Doing it right the first time, every time.
ChrisI need to replace both lower ball joints on my 2000 Ford Expedition. I saw your video call my mechanic and informed about your video on how to replace the ball joints. He wasn't comfortable do it. I have no automotive skill, but have change tail lightbulb. If I wasn't so scared, I would do it myself. Thanks for such an helpful video.
Woman also appreciate your videos because we google stuff that mechanics say our vehicles need fixin. This way we have a good idea what they are talking about. Thnkyou
Just awesome .... Thanks man for all the valuable information and techniques you provides in your clips...you give the confidence for the average guy to take care of his vehicle. May Allah bless you more.
Best video I've seen on the subject. The lighting, camera angles, and direct narrative explanation are excellent. Thank you for taking the time to post.
It’s a damn good thing your Mazda is basically the same thing as my 99 Ford Ranger! This will pretty much give me the exact specs I need to do the job. Thank you Chris!
ChrisFix! I am soo mad at you! You make is all look so darn easy all the time! I am sitting here breaking my finger nails, getting my hair snagged and yanked out and fighting stupid bolts that NEVER want to come out! Pulling out my Oxy torch to loosen stuff and rolling around in the dirt... That being said, I thank you for taking the time to make your videos so fast and to the point so that when I get stuck, I can fix it myself! Thanks for your videos...
Great and very informative video, thanks! One small thing; when loosening the hub nut, to avoid possibility of wheel bearing damage, it's a good idea to partially lift the car so you've still some friction to counter undoing the nut, but most of the load isn't on the bearing. This was from a VAG workshop manual. Don't know if it applies to other manufacturers. Just something to be aware of. I think it also may only apply to non-driven stub-axle types, don't remember 100%.
Your video make it looks so easy , I was afraid to do the lower ball joint bushing myself because I afraid to take the lower control arm off and can’t replace the bushing
excelente miro cada detalle y escucho cada sonido son muy buenos tus videos.. estas ultimas semanas he aprendido mucho con sus video lo que no aprendí nunca en la universidad.........gracias desde Colombia
Hey Chris, not sure if you noticed, but your using the press clamp backwards. on the bottom of the "cup cap" there is a circle that fits into the open end of the clamp. That way you don't have to scrape your knuckles on the ground. Not sure if you figured it out yet. Thanks to your videos I just completed my first upper and lower ball joints with the help of your videos. Keep up the great work!
Chris, fantastic video. After watching I feel very confident on doing the job myself. Not only are you very thorough, you offer great tips. Keep up the great camera work and thanks for the video.
great video i will be changing out a lower ball joint i had not clue how to even use the press tool this video installs confidence to do it yourself thankyou
This is an awesome video. I am just seeing this and it is awesome to see how far you have come to where you are now. Plus it makes me feel better that you started with the same type of tools as I have now and gives me things to look forward to.
Wow, very nice job, you put in the important stuff and take out the stuff not needed. I am thinking of replacing ball joints and havent done it before, but your videos are very well done that I may consider doing the job myself. Thanks
Howard Wallace Thanks Howard! I am glad the video was encouraging and helpful! Definitely consider subscribing! New automotive 'how to' videos every Thursday and most Mondays so stay tuned!
I have learnt very well the use of Ball Joint, very nice video. Thank you Man I am just a starter in Automobile field, studying a year diploma in Automobile (Mechanic).
You are thorough. I subscribed for that. Also, I am slowly adding to my tools. I appreciate you teaching me how to use hand tools to do the job. Thank you.
Thanks for all your videos ChrisFix! I was able to change out the lower ball joints on my 2007 Ford Ranger because of the help from this video. You Da Man!
Good on you for using basic tools. You know who your audience is. Poor weekend diy's that don't have money to buy 10 Tonne press machines or $400 pullers. Great tutorial.
Hi Chris, I'm really impressed with your videos..Some of these knuckleheads move the camera around so much I could get sick. You make is study and understandable..I saw one guy do a video using a flash light at night to replace a wiper module..Duh!!! Wish you were around here my 1992 Gmc van needs a lot of parts.I usually do all my own repairs because I don't trust anyone to do the job right..But I'm just getting to old (74) to be crawling under it...Good job,son
Cody Montana Thanks a lot Cody! Yea, I hear ya. That is why I started making these videos! I do all of my own work as well because I dont trust any mechanics by me.
Did lower ball joints, both inner and outer tie rods, and upper control arms today.... it’s a lot easier to watch the videos than do the work! I couldn’t have done it with the confidence I had (which got me through some rough patches) if not for your videos. So, again, a BIG THANK YOU.
You are saving thousands of dollars man.
This guy is the best instructor for car stuff on YT period....
+Bobby Shah thanks Bobby!
Bobby Shah he really is, I've been watching his videos non stop.. who ever dislikes his videos are idiots.
Bobby Shah the best bar none

Absolutely did the same exact thing Chris did and I had so much confidence! Chris' videos being free is a crime!

Probably best to install the grease zerk last so u don't damage it during CV/knuckle maneuvering.
Shhh it doesn't matter how it's done as long as it's done
I looked through the comments to find this.... I'm not being a critic, because he did a good job, but I did notice two out of three of these
Thanks for using regular tools, they give me confidence knowing that an average guy like me can do this with simple hand tools. Much appreciated. :)
Simply the best instructional videos... the visibility, the clarity, the pace... everything is simply spot on, no fluff, absolute top of professionalism.
Unreal work, thanks Chris
This video saved me over 500.00 in labor.
My cousin had the tools, including the press, for me to do this.
Thanks for taking the time to make this.
You could also rent those tools from a local auto shop.
Apprentice mechanic here: this was satisfying to watch and well informing!!!
Learned so much from Chris's channel. Defiantly the best instructor on You Tube.
I'm glad you are learning a lot!

What if my "cap" size is the size of the top of the ball joint???? [edit I swear O'Reilly's just gave me the worst ball joint press kit imaginable]
Well that's one of the best instructions video I've come across yet! No B.S no music just great direction. Good on you
You sure do explain things well. There are many people who find it difficult to understand workshop manuals and your videos are very useful. It's a pity in Australia, you can't rent that removing tool for free. :(

I see you got moog parts, I always buy moog for my suspension parts. always reliable
Yea they are pretty good!!!
So you would know how much moog upper control arm n ball joint would cost, can you share that?
@MOPARGuy I bought the moog upper control arms (2) n lower ball joints $250. Just got to find the time to install them.

Very clear and concise for rookies like me. I just subscribed and will work through your videos in the coming weeks. Cheers for all the work you put into your videos.
where did you get the list of torque for this project?
THX
I really like the way you explain every step of the process...you are a natural teacher...keep going...👍👍👍
The brake cleaner did a good job. You cleaned so well the control arm is almost like new! @8:15
That is the goal! Glad the videos are helpful!!!
Great job on this Video..getting ready to do my H3 Hummer... garage wants $325...to do this...includes Ball joint and Alignment. But not paying this outrageous price, your vid decided this for me ;) Thanks for this in depth vid my man..you are a God send.
just came across this you did a great job explaining what to do, hope you helped out people who need a little help .
Very good video, I'm a ASE master tech and u where right on point, nice to know a torque wrench is still used to do the job right
Richard Hayes Thanks a lot Richard! Glad an ASE master tech approves of my video!
+David B. Fishburn thanks for the tips!
You're welcome!
+Mason Wingate I am glad my video was helpful!
This video was very helpful for me. I am also planning on replacing all four of my ball joints on my avalanche. Thank you for posting.
Great! Glad the video was helpful! Let me know how it goes! Also, remember to give the video a "thumbs up" (it helps me out, thanks)!
Already gave the thumbs up!
Awesome!
This video was a great help to me when I replaced the ball joints on my trailblazer for the first time. Thanks for posting.
jardo531 AWESOME! Glad the video was helpful!
Your such a great instructor alot of people dont say it accurite i bought everything for 100 an 18 piece kit on ebay detroit axle
excelente miro cada detalle y escucho cada sonido son muy buenos tus videos.. estas ultimas semanas he aprendido mucho con sus video lo que no aprendí nunca en la universidad.........gracias desde Colombia
De nada mi amigo. Saludos. Aqui estamos. Pregunta lo que kieras.
Great instructional video! Clear, concise, and you take into consideration that not everyone has every specialty tool.
+Charles Hubbard Thanks for the tip Charles! Glad the video was helpful!
Yo no voy a decir mucho, excelente video. Respetando las especificaciones de los torques. Bendiciones amigo. 🙏

I am just a starter in Automobile field, studying a year diploma in Automobile (Mechanic).
I needed to change a ball joint and as always Chris is the man!!!

You Da Man!
About to do this along with upper control arms on my 98 Ranger. Very instructional video, should help immensely.

Very Detailed Video with some extra ideas on how to do things if you Don't have the perfect Tools. Thanks again
mrtruserv Thanks for the feedback!
enjoy all your videos... your explanations are very easy to understand and especially you are so energized in giving the explanation....
Good on you for using basic tools. You know who your audience is. Poor weekend diy's that don't have money to buy 10 Tonne press machines or $400 pullers. Great tutorial.
Glad you enjoyed the video! I always try to use common hand tools or find a way to do it inexpensively.
Exceptionally clear instructions, with all important tips & torque values. Video well lit.
S. Pavlovic Thanks a lot! Glad the video was helpful and clear!
I like your way of doing things. True good mechanic, very clean and straight forward.
